Dexter Johnson Engineer at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland

“UB was instrumental in influencing my career choice. In a more personal way, I developed many lifelong relationships with students, faculty and others who have enriched my life.”

PhD ’95, MS ’88 & BS ’87

Dexter Johnson literally grew up to become a rocket scientist. He now helps to test hardware for the space shuttle and the shuttle’s replacements, the Orion and Ares vehicles—making sure the rockets and their payload will survive the shock, vibration, acoustics and load of a given mission.

Gwen HowardAssociate and Project Manager, Foit-Albert Associates

“I got my first job because of UB ... as a result of an urban-design project I’d been involved in.” Her advice to new grads? “Integrate into your community as much as you can. You’re entering a competitive marketplace where, in addition to what you know, it’s who you know.”

MArch ’95

For architect Gwen Howard, civic citizenship runs deep, professionally and personally. Following graduation, she launched a not-for-profit youth hostel. She’s helped restore and reuse city buildings as a building inspector. And she’s taken on the architectural challenges of renovating and designing all-new habitats at Buffalo’s 135-year-old zoo.

BFA ’05

“UB taught me not only how to act, but a lot about discipline too … about how to respect what you’re doing and how to show up for work, represent yourself out there in the professional world, which makes a difference in the end.”

Executive Director, TransAfrica Forum

Both the youngest and the first woman ever to hold her position—Lee has made it her job to make a difference in influencing U.S. foreign policy in Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America on topics ranging from the dangers of militarization in Africa, to the unintentionally negative effects of the war on drugs.

JD ’02 & BA ’00

“This is not something you do ‘just because’—it’s definitely a calling. For those of us who are trying to make a difference in the world, we have to be excellent; it’s not a choice.”

There are 30,397 alumni

who hold multiple

degrees from UB. Many

students choose UB

because we offer degrees

and programs that can

only be found here. Our

allow students to earn a

bachelor’s and master’s

degree within just five

years total.

Physician and women’s health advocate

Intellectual curiosity and feminism have stoked Donnica Moore’s career-long efforts to educate people on women’s health issues. Through a high public profile (e.g. national appearances on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The View,” CNN and more), Moore now trains a spotlight on a variety of women’s health topics.

Hollywood animation artist

“If you really want to pursue your dream, it’s a sacrifice; it’s tough,” he says. “You have to have thick skin to be able to take criticism, learn from it and improve.”

BFA ’01

With an unforgettable first name and artistic talent inherited from his mother’s family, Michaelangelo Rocco practically was predestined for a career as an artist. But Rocco credits his UB professors for continually presenting creative challenges and critiques that prepared him for the demands of shows and projects, including “American Dad,” “The Goode Family” and the “Family Guy” comic book series.
