Nestled in the beautiful countryside of Myerstown, PA the Shank Door Company is happily celebrating 53 years of service within the community. With a variety of doors available to both residential and commercial clients the capability of Shank Door goes far beyond the products themselves. It is certainly not just doors that have propelled the deep-rooted success of this local business; with its origins in Harrisonburg, Virginia, when during the 1950’s a gentlemen named Ralph Shank began to sell and install garage doors. In that time the familiar and popular one piece, single slab, tilt garage door was predominant. With hard work, discipline and the heart of a true entrepreneur Ralph found success and after a short time in Baltimore, MD he moved in 1964 to Pennsylvania. Ralph continued his dedication to the garage door business in Pennsylvania and began selling doors out of the basement of his home with the humble beginnings of this company in excellence, superior labor, remarkable product and sincere customer service. The current location of Shank Door, was originally a farm belonging to his brother Aaron Shank and became the established site for business in 1973 only two years after taking on his first employee Ira Mast. In 1976 Ralph sold the business to Ira, as Ralph remained involved in some capacity following the transition.

Ira continued in the course of distinction set before him by Ralph growing the company competently and yielding growth. Despite a fire experienced in 1982

when the building burned, Ira persevered and rebuilt, despite any initial setback Shank Door did rebound and saw expansion that led to the construction of several additions as the company moved forward.

While styles and the times have certainly changed from Ralph’s initial interest in doors, the market for quality, durability and function have not. Employing approximately 50 people Shank Door maintains the quality and hard work set forth by Ralph 53 years ago; providing installation, service and maintenance on preexisting or new construction to customers within the area, throughout the state and out of state. This commitment has earned them excellent reviews on Angie’s List as well as countless customer referrals. Entry doors, custom doors, garage doors, rolling doors, fire doors, and horse barn doors, roll up screens and retractable awnings are among the products available for residential or commercial clients. Trademarks provide a means for consumers to quickly identify the source of an item and give some degree of confidence in its quality. Any distinctive word, logo, color, sound, phrase or combination that uniquely identifies the provider of a product or service can be registered as a trademark. Distinctive scents, sounds, shapes or even the general “feel” of a product may be registered in certain circumstances. The NBC chime offers a good example of one of these unusual marks. Coca-Cola provides an excellent model for trademark success. The company has registered “Coca-Cola,” “Coke,” the familiar shade of red, countless logos in the unique Coke font and the easily recognized Coca-Cola ribbon. Even the shape of a Coke bottle has been registered. While federal registration is not required, it provides the owner with some additional protections under the law and may increase the overall value of the business holding rights in the mark. It permits the holder to use the ® designation, protects against the registration of a confusingly similar mark and allows for the filing of a federal suit against infringers. The strongest trademarks are those that are arbitrary or fanciful. “Apple” computer is an excellent example of a non-descriptive and unique mark; however, a manufactured word such as “Kleenex” or “Chapstick” can provide the most powerful branding. These companies have been so successful in promoting their marks that their products are now referred to by their trademark names rather than their actual ones. Such “genericide” can create its own legal issues but it is a testament to the power and value of branding.
