The assembled cleaner will look like the drawing.

Operate cleaner only atvoltage specified on dataplate on bottom ofcleaner.This cleaner is intendedfor household use.

Polarized plug To reduce the risk of electric shock, thisappliance has a polarized plug (oneblade is wider than the other). This plugwill fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet,reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install thep roper outlet. Do not change the plug inany way.

ON-OFF switchPlug cord into electrical outlet.To turn cleaner ON, push switch up.To turn cleaner OFF, push switch down.

Carrying cleanerUse the carrying handle to lift thecleaner.

Do not lift cleaner using dirt cuphandle (A).

Handle positionsThe handle of your cleaner has threepositions; upright for storage and whenusing cleaning tools; operating posi-tion for general operation on carpetand floors; low for reaching under lowfurniture. Step on handle release leverto lower handle.

Transporting cleanerPut handle in upright position. Tilt clean-er back on rear wheels. Push forward.

Lowest setting: for bare floors and alltypes of carpet

Cleaning lightweightflexible rugsStand on one end of rug and movecleaner toward other end or edge. Before reaching edge, push down onhandle. This will lift up the nozzle (frontof cleaner) and will prevent rug fromclinging to cleaner. Continue to lift upnozzle so that when you have reachedthe edge, it is completely off the rug.Move cleaner back to start again, lowernozzle, and use only forward strokes.

Carpet heightadjustmentThe cleaning of carpet and rugs takesplace at the nozzle (B).When it is necessary to raise and lower thenozzle for various carpet pile heights, slidethe nozzle control knob (C) to the desire ds e t t i n g .

Brush roll switchTurn brush roll switch (D) OFF to cleanhard surface floors.Turn brush roll switch ON to clean carpetand rugs.The brush rolls will automatically turn offwhen the handle is in the upright position.

Circuit breakerThe circuit breaker turns the brush rollsoff if there is an obstruction in them.When tripped, the circuit breaker button(E) will pop up and the brush roll buttonwill light up.The brush rolls will not turn, but the suc-tion motor will continue to run.To reset the breaker, turn cleaner OFFand unplug it. Clear obstruction. Presscircuit breaker button down. Turncleaner ON and continue cleaning.

Edge cleaningSpecial edge groomers are provided onboth sides of the nozzle to remove dirt incarpet near baseboards and furniture. Guide either side of nozzle parallel toedge of carpet or furniture.

Stair cleaningUse the hose and powered hand tool* orfurniture nozzle for stair cleaning. CAUTION: To prevent the cleanerfrom falling, always place it at the bot-tom of the stairs.With handle in upright position, cleanfrom bottom to top.

*Available at additional cost if notincluded with your cleaner.

Select proper toolE. Dusting brush may be used forcarved furniture, table tops, books,lamps, lighting fixtures, venetian blinds,baseboards, shutters, and registers.

F. Furniture nozzle may be used forupholstered furniture, draperies, mat-tresses, clothing, automobile interiors,and carpeted stairs.G. Powered hand tool* may be usedfor upholstered furniture, carpeted stairsand hard-to-reach places.

H. Crevice tool may be used in tightspaces, corners and along edges insuch places as dresser drawers, uphol-stered furniture, stairs and baseboards.

Cleaning toolsWhen using cleaning tools, cleaner han-dle should be in the upright positionto activate the automatic “brush rollOFF” and for convenience in movingthe cleaner from one area to another.

Attach wand and toolsAttach tool or wand to the hose (K).

Twist wand or tool slightly to tighten orloosen the connection.

How to clean toolsTo clean the hose and the poweredhand tool*, wipe off dirt with a clothdampened in a mild detergent. Rinsewith a damp cloth. Do not submergepowered hand tool in water.

Wash cleaning tools in warm water witha detergent. Rinse and air dry beforeusing.

How to attach toolcoverThe tool cover is designed with a “bre a k -away” feature which allows it to snap free ifit is pushed open too far.

To reattach, align hinges of cover with slotson sides of tool storage are a .

Push cover down to secure in place.

Turn cleaner OFF before disconnect-ing and connecting hose to hose tube(D).

To use hose, lift hose end as shown.

Extra reach hose(available at additional cost if not includ-ed with your cleaner)

The extra reach hose provides a 20 footreach to allow easier cleaning of stairsand hard-to-reach high places. To attachhose to your vacuum cleaner, follow theinstructions below.

Turn cleaner OFF before disconnect-ing and connecting hose.

Align end of extra reach hose with pro-jections (A) over slots (B) on end ofattached hose.

Slide hose into slots and twist hose tolock it into place. (To detach hose,reverse procedure.)

Attach wands or tools to the other end ofhose.

Familiarize yourself with these homemaintenance tasks as proper use andcare of your cleaner will ensure contin-ued cleaning effectiveness.

Filter bagWhen to re p l a c eCheck filter bag from time to time. It is re c-ommended that you change the filter bagwhen dirt reaches the dotted line. If mored i rt than this accumulates, your cleaner willnot operate eff e c t i v e l y.

NOTE: All new carpet has loose fiberswhich can fill the bag quickly whilevacuuming. If you are using the clean-er on new carpet, be sure to changethe filter bag often.

CAUTION: Very fine materials, suchas face powder or cornstarch, mayseal the filter bag and may cause it toburst even though it is only partiallyfull of dirt. When cleaner is used toremove material of this nature,change filter bag often.

3. Maintenance

Cleaning final HEPA filterThe final filter assists in returning cleanair to the room.

To remove this filter when it becomesdirty, lay handle flat on the floor. Pressdoor tab (C) and remove door.

Remove filter bag container -Firmly pull cup straight out.

It is imperative that you use onlygenuine HOOVER filter bags made byThe Hoover Company to assure thatyour cleaner operates at peak perfor-mance. HOOVER bags can be identifiedby these trademarks ---

Remove and install filter bag - Remove lid. Grasp filter bag collar (A)and pull collar from tube (B).

Note: Do not clean out old filter bag andreuse. Discard used filter bag.

Align opening in new filter bag with dirttube in bag container (B).

Push bag collar (A) firmly onto tube (B).

Replace container -Replace bag container lid.

Slide container into place.

Press firmly until container locks inplace.

Press latch (D) and remove filter. The fil-ter can be cleaned by tapping either ofthe ends. Do not tap soft pleated sidesof the HEPA filter, as this could damagethe filter. Reposition filter and replacedoor.

Should you want to replace this filter, askfor HOOVER part No. 43613024.

Do not operate cleaner without thefilter in place.

Be sure to press the bag collar pastthe tabs (C) on either side of the dirttube.

It may be easier to press the collar pastone tab first and then press the oppositeside of the collar past the other tab.

Install bulb - Pull old bulb straightout of socket. Push new bulb straightinto socket until locked in place

Excessive force is not required.

Headlight replacementWhat to buyThis cleaner uses a 12 volt, wedge basetype 912 bulb, HOOVER part No.27313107.

Remove lens -Disconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet.Using a flat blade screwdriver, pry offlens as shown and lift off.

Replace lens - Place one tab (E) onlens into slot. Press on lens and secureother tab.

The agitator brushrolls

When to replaceWhen agitator brushes are worn, theagitators should be replaced.

To check condition of brushes, discon-nect cleaner from electrical outlet.Move edge of a card across bottomplate while turning agitators. To maintaincleaning effectiveness, have brush rollsreplaced if brushes do not touch card.

New brush rolls can be installed at yournearest Hoover Factory Service Center.

The edge groomersWhen to replaceThe edge groomers, located on bothsides of the nozzle, should be replacedwhen they appear worn.

What to buyWhen purchasing edge groomers, askfor HOOVER part No. 39511009.

How to replace1. Remove tool from hose and turn it sobottom faces up. Press the latches oneither side of tool and remove bottomplate (A).

2. Unscrew the two Phillips screws andremove belt guard (B).

3. Remove agitator including end plates(C) and discard.

4. Inspect belt to ensure that it is ingood condition. If belt is cracked,gouged or broken, replace it (see follow-ing section).

5. Insert brush roll through belt and posi-tion belt over gear teeth (D) on brushroll.

6. With curved ends down, slide endplates (C) of brush roll into slots (E) ontool.

7. Replace belt guard (B) making surenot to pinch brush bristles in guard. Turnagitator, making sure it rotates freely.

Replace and tighten screws.

8. To replace bottom plate (A), insert thefour tabs on edge of bottom plate intoslots on front of tool.

Pivot bottom plate down and snapclosed.

Powered hand toolBelt replacementInspecting the beltThe powered hand tool belt is designedto last a long time and is not normallyreplaced. However, if the belt is crack-ed, gouged or broken, it should bereplaced.

Replacing beltWhen replacing belt, ask for HOOVERpart No. 38528037.

1. Remove bottom plate, belt guard andbrush roll as described in Figs. 3-15through 3-17.

The belt can be seen through the top ofthe nozzle or by removing the bottomplate and belt guard (Figs. 3-15 and 3-16).

2. Grasp turbine (E) and pull firmly toremove.

3. Remove belt from turbine pulley (F).Replace with new belt.

4. With flat sides of turbine retainers (G)pointing down, slide retainers intogrooves (H) in tool housing and snapinto place.

5. Replace brush roll, belt guard, andbottom plate as described in Figs. 3-17through 3-20.

LubricationThe cleaner is equipped with bearingsthat contain sufficient lubrication for thelife of the cleaner. The addition of lubri-cant could cause damage. Therefore,do not add lubricant to any bearings.

Thermal protectorAn internal thermal protector has beendesigned into your cleaner to protect itfrom overheating.

When the thermal protector activates,the suction motor will stop running,however the agitators will continue torun. If this happens, proceed as follows:

1. Turn the cleaner OFF and discon-nect it from the electrical outlet.

2. Check bag. Replace if full.3. Check final filter for dirt accumula-

tion.4. Refer to “Clearing blockages”

section. 5. When the motor cools, the thermal

protector automatically resets andcleaning may continue.If the thermal protector continues toactivate after following the above steps,your cleaner may need servicing (see“Service” section).

Hoover CleaningPerformanceThis Hoover Cleaning Performance Sys-tem is for comparing the relative pro-gressive performance of Hooveruprights only and not for comparisonwith any other brands. The majority ofthis rating is based upon the AmericanSociety for Testing and Materials (ASTM)Carpet Cleaning Effectiveness Test(ASTM Test F608). Other performancefactors include Hose Power (ASTM TestF558), Surface Litter Cleaning, HardFloor Cleaning, Edge Cleaning, CleaningWidth, and Air Filtration.

1. Disconnect powered hand tool fromhose. Remove bottom plate, belt guardand turbine as described in Figs. 3-15,3-16 and 3-22.

Remove any blockage from turbinechannel (B).Replace belt turbine, brush roll, beltguard and bottom plate.

B. If a blockage occurs during tool use:Turn cleaner OFF and disconnect fromelectrical outlet.1. Look into hose end and remove anyblockage.

Clearing blockagesDisconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet.Low suction or pick up may be due to ablockage in the system. Refer to the fol-lowing steps to check for blockagescontinuing with each step until theblockage is found:

A. If a blockage occurs during floorcleaning:Turn cleaner OFF and disconnect fromelectrical outlet.1. Check fullness of filter bag; replacebag.

Check hose tube 6. Turn cleaner OFF and unplug.7. Remove hose from tube. Clear block-age from tube. Also, check hose forblockage.
