Archie Knox Youth Teams National CoachBorn 01/05/1947

Archie joined the Scottish Football As-sociation in July 2006 after a successful coaching career at many clubs, including

Manchester United, Aberdeen, Dundee, Rangers and Everton. His playing career lasted from 1965 to 1980 and encompassed over 500 senior matches for Forfar, St Mirren, Dundee United and Montrose. He now has overall managerial responsibility for taking forward all men’s national age group teams in Scotland, from Under 15 through to Under 21 level.

Archie Gemmill Team ManagerBorn 24/03/1947

Archie is a Scotland legend who played 43 times and scored 8 goals for the national team, including the one that is generally regarded as the great-

est ever Scotland goal, against Holland at the 1978 World Cup. He had a prolific club career, starting with St Mirren and making his name at Preston North End, Derby County, Notting-ham Forest and Birmingham City, as well as a season at Jacksonville Tea Men. He won English league titles with Derby (twice) and Forest.

Tommy Wilson Head Coach Born 24/08/1961

Tommy had a suc-cessful playing career with Queen’s Park, St Mirren, Dunfermline, Kilmarnock and Dumbarton, the highlight being a

Scottish Cup win with St Mirren in 1987. On hanging up his boots he became a coach, and worked for many years at the Scottish FA in the Football Development department, before joining Rangers in the summer of 2006 as their youth team coach. Rangers youth team have just won the league and cup double in Scotland.

Jim Stewart Goalkeeping Coach Born 09/03/1954

During his playing career, Jim played in goal for Kilmarnock, Middlesbrough and Rangers, winning the Scottish Cup and

Scottish League Cup while at Ibrox. He also earned two caps for Scotland, and was squad goalkeeper at the 1974 FIFA World Cup. He later became the specialist goalkeeping coach at Kilmarnock and is currently at Heart of Midlothian. For the last five years he has been the national goalkeeping coach of the Scotland men’s team.

Andrew McNeil – Hibernian 1Goalkeeper

DOB – 19/01/87

Height – 5ft 11.5ins (182cm)

Weight – 13st 7lbs (86kg)

Andrew has been the first choice goalkeeper for Hibernian for the second half of this season, having signed for his boyhood heroes in January 2006 from Southampton. He played in goal when Hibs won the

Scottish League Cup in March - the first major trophy the club had won in 16 years. He has huge international experience in the Scotland youth sides, and played every match at last summer’s European Championship finals.

Andrew Cave-Brown – Norwich City 2Defender

DOB – 05/08/88

Height – 5ft 10ins (178cm)


Andrew joined Norwich City on a scholarship for season 2004/2005 and signed a professional contract in 2006. Although he has only made two first team appearances, he is surely set to make the breakthrough shortly. He has progressed through the levels to become a mainstay at full-back

for Scotland, and as well as playing in every match at last summer’s European Championship finals, he is young enough to have played again for the U19s this season.

Lee Wallace – Heart of Midlothian 3Defender

DOB – 01/08/87



Lee joined Hearts in the summer of 2004 and came into the team early in 2005 for an extended run at left back, aged just 17. He now has extensive experience at club level and was part of the squad which won the Scottish Cup in 2006. For Scotland, he has been a regular since

coming into the U19s in September 2005, and played in every match last summer at the European Championship finals.

Jamie Adams – Kilmarnock 4Midfield

DOB – 26/08/87

Height – 6ft 1in (185 cm)


The tall midfielder has been with Kilmarnock since the summer of 2004, but with limited first team opportunities he went on loan last season to Queen of the South in the First Division. Hopes to break into the Kilmarnock team this season and has recently signed a new contract. A

member of the Scotland squad at the European U19 Championship last year.

Scott Cuthbert – Celtic 5Defender

DOB – 15/06/87



Scotland’s team captain, Scott plays for Celtic and although he has not yet made his first team debut he is a regular in the reserves and can play right back or centre back. The highly rated defender went on loan to Livingston last season to gain experience, and made his first appearance

at U21 level against Germany. Has extensive international experience and played in every one of Scotland’s matches on the way to the European U19 Championship final last season.

Mark Reynolds – Motherwell 6Defender

DOB – 07/05/87

Height – 5ft 11ins (180 cm)

Weight – 10st 9lbs (68 kg)

Mark has been a major success over the past year with Motherwell, being virtually ever-present in their matches and winning the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Month award in April 2007. The centre half has also played his way into the Scotland U21 side, picking up his first

cap in the friendly match against Germany in February. A member of the Scotland squad at the European U19 Championship last year, he is tipped for greater things.

Michael McGlinchey – Celtic 7Forward

DOB – 07/01/87



Born in New Zealand – where his father played football – Michael came through the youth set-up at Celtic, signing professionally in 2005. So far the striker has made just one substitute appearance for the first team, but seems set to break into the squad for the coming season. Fast and

tricky, he is a regular goalscorer for the club youth and reserve sides. He played in every match for Scotland at last summer’s European Championship finals.

Calum Elliot – Heart of Midlothian 8Forward

DOB – 30/03/87

Height – 6ft (183cm)


Calum signed for Edinburgh side Hearts in 2004, having previously played with their youth initiative, and made his debut as a substitute against Inverness Caledonian Thistle that year. With first team opportunities limited, he went on loan to Motherwell last season but expects to make

a big impact at Tynecastle this year. He scored twice for Scotland in European U19 Championships, including the winner in the 1-0 semi-final victory over the Czech Republic.

Steven Fletcher – Hibernian 9Forward

DOB – 26/03/87



Steven broke into the Hibernian first team just after his 17th birthday, and has since become a regular for the Edinburgh team, scoring many valuable goals including two against Kilmarnock in the Scottish League Cup final. The tall striker was Scotland’s top goalscorer in the Euro-

pean U19 Championships last year, netting nine goals in as many games, but unfortunately was suspended for the final itself.

Graham Dorrans – Livingston 10Forward

DOB – 05/05/87



Graham signed for Livingston in 2005 and after a short spell on loan at Partick Thistle has become a mainstay of the team, scoring regularly in the First Division. He scored Scotland’s goal against Spain in the final of the European Championship last season, after coming on as a substitute, and is likely to be a major goal threat in Canada this summer.

Ryan Conroy – Celtic 11Midfield

DOB – 28/04/87



Ryan is a regular in left midfield with Celtic’s U19s and Reserves, having converted from a winger, but has yet to play in the first team. However, he is a mainstay of the national team, and played in every match, including all the qualifiers, during Scotland’s run to the European Championship final last season.

Scott Fox – Celtic 12Goalkeeper

DOB – 28/06/87



Scott currently plays in the Celtic youth team and has all the potential to become a great goalkeeper, with a reputation for quick reflexes and shot-stopping. He was in the Scotland squad for last season’s European Championships but remained on the bench as understudy to Andrew

McNeil. He has performed with distinction on his appearances in the national team.

Ryan O’Leary – Kilmarnock 13Defender

DOB – 24/08/87



Centre back Ryan broke into the Kilmarnock first team last season having joined the club in 2005 from Aberdeen, where he made his senior debut in 2004. His first game for Scotland was the U20 victory over Canada in March, after opting to play for Scotland even though he also qualifies to

play for the Republic of Ireland through his father, former Celtic defender Pierce.

Andrew Considine – Aberdeen 14Defender

DOB – 01/04/87

Height – 6ft 1in (185cm)


Andrew is a tall central defender for Aberdeen who was given his first senior appearance against Dundee in May 2004. This past season he has established himself as a regular for the Scottish Premier club as they earned third place in the league, with the prospect of European football next season.

Garry Kenneth – Dundee United 15Defender

DOB – 21/06/87



Garry plays in central defence for Dundee United in the Scottish Premier League. He started with United when he was 12 and broke into the first team in February 2005, aged 17. He was part of the Scotland U19 team at the UEFA U19 Championship in 2006, and also played in both friendly

matches in March when Scotland U20s faced up to Canada in preparation for the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Ross Campbell – Hibernian 16Forward

DOB – 03/07/87



Ross is a prolific goalscorer who is one of the new crop of youngsters to come through the ranks at Hibernian and recently made the break-through into the first team. He made his club debut against Kilmarnock on 15 January 2007 in a 2-0 victory. His first appearance at any level for

Scotland was for the Under 20s against Canada on 27 March 2007, and he scored both goals in the 2-1 victory.

Sean Lynch – Hibernian 17Midfield

DOB – 31/01/87



One of many players who have come through the Hibernian youth system, Sean made his first-team debut in the Scottish Cup tie against Gretna in February this year, and a week later started the league match at Celtic Park. Club manager John Collins said: “Sean will get better and

better. He has a wonderful attitude, he’s a worker and a listener and he’ll keep developing.”

Robert Snodgrass – Livingston 18Forward

DOB – 07/09/87



Robert came through the youth system at Livingston and h made his debut just days after his 17th birthday against Kilmarnock. He scored his first goal after only three games in a 2-0 home win over Dunfermline and has scored 7 goals in 49 games for Livingston since his debut in 2005.

Last season he went on loan to Stirling Albion in Division 2 and his goals were a major factor in the club winning promotion.

Alan Lowing – Rangers 19Defender

DOB – 07/01/88



A product of the Rangers youth development programme at Murray Park, Alan plays as a right full back. He made his first team debut on 20 September 2005 in a CIS Cup match against Clyde at Ibrox, playing the full 120 minutes as Rangers won 5-2 in extra time. He has since played a

few times for the first team, including against Partizan Belgrade in the UEFA Cup last season.

Brian Gilmour – Clyde 20Midfield

DOB – 08/05/87



Brian, a midfielder, began his career with Rangers as a young boy, and was the only Rangers player to play for Scotland in the 2006 UEFA Under 19 European Championship. He left the Ibrox club in February this year to sign for Clyde in Division 1 and made his debut the following day

against Livingston. He played 13 times for the Cumbernauld side, scoring once. Is currently unsure whether he will return to Clyde next season, but a good showing in the World Cup will undoubt-edly help his prospects.

Greg Kelly – Aberdeen 21Goalkeeper

DOB – 28/04/87


Weight – 12st (76kg)

A promising goalkeeper who has yet to make a first team appearance for his club, Greg is regarded as an excellent prospect for the future with the ideal build for his position. He gained experience last season on loan at Division 2 side Peterhead, and has also been promoted to reserve keeper for Aberdeen.

If Scotland finishes third and qualifies, our next match will either be in Toronto on 11 July, kick-off 7.45 pm, or in Montreal on 12 July, kick-off 7.45 pm.

HOW SCOTLAND REACHED THE FINALS

Scotland earned a place at the FIFA U20 World Cup by finishing in second place at last season’s UEFA U19 Championship finals in Poland. Many of Scotland’s players have also broadened their experience by featuring in other representative games this season, for Scotland Under 21s and (if still young enough!) for Scotland Under 19s.

PREVIOUS WORLD CUP FINALS

Scotland has twice played in the FIFA World Championships, and on each occasion reached the quarter finals.

In 1983, having won the UEFA Championship for the first and – so far – only time, Scotland traveled to Mexico in June 1983. The highlight of the tournament was defeating hosts Mexico in a packed Aztec Stadium to reach the quarter finals, where a single goal ended Scotland’s participation.

Four years later, fourth place in the UEFA Championship earned Scotland’s participation in the FIFA event held in Chile in October 1987. After progressing through their group unbeaten, Scotland were unlucky to exit the tournament on penalties after drawing with West Germany.
