GRADE 7/8

Interpret Diagrams, Layouts, and Plans (ID)

Introduction

 Figure No.1. A house with a plan

As someone who will be joining the industry of household services, you have to educate and                               familiarize yourself of the work environment you will be dealing with. To be well familiar with                               your surroundings will allow you to feel comfortable and work more efficiently, and these will                             result in your tasks being done faster and be of quality. Since it is household services, the                                 home is your setting of choice. Knowing what and where to go when something needs to be                                 done will cut your time of performing a task

In this lesson you will learn how to read and interpret diagrams, layouts, and plans,                             particularly of a house. You will also be introduced to the different parts and rooms of a                                 house which you will be asked to take care of as a household services worker. This will help                                   you better understand your work environment.

 Learn about It!

Houses are quite interesting structures. They can come in various shapes and sizes and                           convey different eras and styles based on the specifications provided by the owners. But all                             these remarkable homes can be intricate to build. It is necessary for designers and architects                             who will be building these structures to be able to express their client’s wants and needs in                                 their daily living. Such concerns can be addressed through the use of house plans and                             diagrams. As a future household services worker, it is critical for you to understand and be                               able to interpret these plans to assist you in your tasks.  The House Plan Houses require a lot of consultation and planning to build. The architects must be able to                               incorporate the ideas of the clients and interpret it in a way that is practical and innovative. As                                   a guide, house plans are created. These are blueprints that serves as guide for the designer                               and builders during the construction. It includes all the requirements and dimensions                       together with the building instructions to be followed.

● Common Features of a House Plan Similar to an actual house, a house plan contains several parts that serve different                           functions that act as a guide in understanding and reading the plan. Though some                           designers may include little bits here and there, most of the time a standard format is                               being followed.

❏ Title block As the name indicates, it is the part of a house plan that specifies what the plan                                 is for. It also includes the name of the (1) architect, designer, builder, (2) the                             revision of the drawing you are holding, (3) the address where the structure will                           be built, (4) the name and other details of the client, (5) the name of the person                                 that drafted the plan, and (8) the date.

❏ Scale  Scale is used when drawing floor and house plans. It is the representation of the                             actual size specifications of the structure to be built. The scale used usually                         represents the ratio (1:200) or by block.

❏ Orientation House plans and other diagrams must indicate the direction related to the                       structure to be built. For consistency, other drawings to be used for the same                           project must follow the same orientation.

❏ Callouts Callouts are the symbols used to infer that additional details on certain parts of                           the plans are included in separate diagrams or layouts.

 ● How to read a floor plan

House plans, layouts, and other diagrams are most of the time easy to understand.                           However, the same as other architectural plans and blueprints, abbreviations and                     symbols are used to represent numerous details needed for the construction of the                         house. You must learn these abbreviations and symbols to understand better the plans                         provided.  ❏ Walls, windows, and doors

In a house plan, the walls are the most prominent element that you will see. They                               are represented using parallel lines which are solid or filled using a pattern.                         Symbols for doors, windows, and other passage to other rooms are represented                       with a break of the parallel lines as walls.

Doors are drawn as rectangles and sometimes may include an arc to illustrate                         the direction to where it would swing to when opened. Each type of door is                             drawn a bit different from the other. Below are symbols used when illustrating                         doors on a house plan.

❏ Stairs The stairs are a bit difficult to draw since a house plan usually follows a top view                                 orientation. For simple representation, stairs are drawn as a number of                     rectangles and including an arrow to show if the stairs is going up another floor                             or down. For every 3 feet that the stairs rises above the floor, a diagonal is used                                 to cut in on the house plan. Additional stairs above the line are drawn with                             dashed lines.

❏ Furnishings House plans, specifically floor plans, usually include the location of furnishings                     and fixtures. Designers emphasized on the proper location of kitchen and bath                       fixtures because knowing the precise layout of each part of the house may affect                           the result of the house plan and thus the design and construction of the house.                             Symbols used for furniture and fixtures can be seen and recognized easily. Below                         are examples of symbols for furniture, fixtures, and finishings.

❏ Open to below House designs with high ceilings can also be indicated in the house plan. The                           height of the ceiling is illustrated using a dashed line that also shows the                           perimeter of the space that would be constructed with a high ceiling. if a space                             will have a high ceiling with no second floor a note will be inserted indicating so.

❏ Measurements House plans can contain more details like “dimension strings” that are used to                         locate architectural elements such as doors, windows, and walls. Dimension                   strings can be seen parallel to the element to be located with 45 degree “hash                             marks” at the end which shows the start and end of the measurement.

g_QYgKSQ9FMQVPRgdz0ku47s

House plans commonly only include dimensions and measurements of rooms                   and the whole house. However, there are instances that designers and architects                       also include furnitures in the drawings to help the client get a better view and                             idea of how the space would look like.

❏ Volume and light  Together with the dimensions and placement of furniture and finishes, the                     volume can also determine the success of a house’s design. The introduction of                         high ceilings and “open plans” has provided a new array of designs for                         homeowners. Both smaller and large plans can be made to feel comfortable due                         to high ceilings.  The inclusion of larger windows will also help make a small space feel bigger as it                               will provide view for the homeowners and natural lighting inside the home.
