As the chart above will indicate, I am a native North Carolinian. For that matter, my husband and I are both Wake Forest graduates, Class of 1954, and I am currently 1954 Class Fund Chairman, and a past member of the Alumni Council. All this, and after years involved in genealogy, I never knew until recently that #52 above (written in), The Rev Nathaniel Pruden, was Baptist, nor that the records I seek are on the WF campus! Never had to run any Baptist records before as my mother's side is Episcopalian and my husband's side was Quaker, any generations I've needed to research. Help! These pesky Prudens are slowly revealing themselves to me. I found the Pruden family Bible quite by accident last year in Gates County and made a true copy by hand. It starts with The Rev Nathaniel Pruden and wife Marcella Newsom(e) and goes on with my Lewis W. Pruden. Dear Mr. Woodard:

I write you at the suggestion of Dr. Charles Deweese, Southern Baptist Convention Historical Commission, here in Nashville, TN.

Pruden.

Would you perchance have any information about said Nathaniel Pruden~ What really triggers this letter is something I found in an old book I re-read and annotated during a recent bout with the 'flu.

aRout William Dossey (Dorsey, latterly) Pruden,Ason of The Rev. Nathaniel Pruden. In this writeup, I quote,

Rev. Nathaniel Pruden was one of the pioneer Baptist preachers of Eastern North Carolina, whose career commenced at the beginning of the eighteenth century and continued to his death, about 1818. He was one of the founders of the North Carolina State Baptist Convention.

If you have any information about this ancestor of mine, would you please advise procedures necessary to procure same?

And while I'm thinking about it, on my husband's side of this family, way back, also, I ran across a reference in N.C. Bible Records, Spence and Shannonhouse, 1974, in the PRITCHARD family records that John L. Pritchard, brother to my husband's ancestor David Pritchard, was a President of Wake Forest College in the early days. If there is any information about this relation, please advise procedure for obtaining it. This Welsh line was Quaker.

I'm hoping to make it to the new campus for our 30th Class Reunion in October. I've never really set foot on the new campus (can't help it, I did graduate on the Old Campus) and with relatives there in Winston-Salem, there's no excuse not to make it! My cousin's wife works on campus over in the Admissions or some related office, Mrs. Bill Ray.

For that matter, my husband and I hope to make a pitstop in Winston-Salem in April while on a "use or lose" vacation. We want to make our acquaintance with the University along with seeing the various Moravian sites, MESDA, and the collection of bird porcelains on campus.

Sorry to ramble on like this. I love North Carolina, I love Wake Forest and I am hooked on lineage research. Never dreamed I might connect all three in one letter!

Thank you for your time and help in advance.

Biographical sketch of Elder NATHANIEL PRUDEN.

Elder NATHANIEL PRUDEN was a native of Gates County, North

carolina, born December 29th 1781, had but a small share of

education, but improved by dint of study, and close application

after he came to manhood. In the 23rd year of his age, as he

stated himself, he was awakened to a sense of the dangerous

state, he by nature, was in; and was finally brought to believe

in the lovely redeemer, to the saving of his soul; he was

baptized by Elder HENRY and gave himself a member of the Baptist

church at Wycacon. He soon after commenced public speaking,

returned to his father's in the neighborhood of Middle swamp, in

Gates County, where his labours, as a preacher, were blessed to

the good of many, and in August 21st 1806 was ordained to the

work of the ministry, called to and accepted the pastoral care of

the church gathered at Middle swill~p, where he continued giving

general satisfaction, as a minister of the gospel, untill his

removal from the church below, to that above; which took place the

27th of September 1815. Elder PRUDEN was a man of lively turn,

truly zealous as a christian and as a minister; very attentive to

his appointments, and was heard with great delight, by all the

206.9756/M66cho

lovers of vital religion. He was much engaged in the work of

preaching the gospel as long as he lived, and the loss of him

was much lamented by the church of which he was a member, and

by many of the sister churches.
