The Barchester Care Awards & Barchester in Bloom

The Barchester Care Awards, including the garden categories (Barchester in Bloom), is an annual event that showcases the very best that Barchester has to offer. The Care Awards celebrates the fantastic individuals who work and volunteer in Barchester care homes across the UK; and Barchester in Bloom recognises the beautiful outdoor spaces tended by residents and staff members. Our Divisional Winners have already been named, and the award ceremony will be held in Manchester on October 11th, when the National Winners will be announced. Good luck to all our Divisional Winners and thank you to everyone who took the time to make a nomination.

This is the story of Joyce Harmer’s wedding ring. Joyce Harmer, 97 a Tyspane Care Home resident, has an interesting story about her wedding ring. At 19, Joyce worked for the General Steam Navigation Company in London. She was in the catering department. There she met, 17 year old Ken. “He was the office boy and we became friends right away. Just friends.” She added with a smile. Then the war came and Ken was sent to America on the SS Queen Victoria and was promoted Radio Operator, while she was promoted to the office as a map analyzer. While Ken was in America, he sent her a photo of himself dressed in Navy uniform. “I received the letter and this photo,” Joyce said holding on the framed photo of the handsome young officer. “I was so happy to receive the photo and then I read the letter, and it is a shame that I no longer have the letter.” In the letter, Ken wrote “I have your wedding ring. Look at the bottom left corner of the photo.” Indeed, while they took his photograph, Ken wore the wedding ring he had just bought on his pinkie finger.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR WINNER!

Congratulations to Anais Rose Davie, our young volunteer, who was named as the

Volunteer of the Year at the 2018 Barchester Care Awards. This award goes to an

individual who shows real passion and dedication by freely giving their time and energy at

one of our homes or hospitals.

This year Anais used her initiative not only to recruit help from the community but also

to get donations towards the creation of an incredible 3 foot by 2.5 foot cake in

celebration of the Queen's birthday which she baked herself using her aunt's industrial

oven. The cake was so impressive it was even picked up in the local

News. Her efforts to bridge the age gap at the home, as well as her compassionate

commitment at such a young age is truly an inspiration.

Well done Anais!!!!
