(Duke Bluebeard’s Castle)

Who is the most significant 20th-century composer? Is there any point in posing such a question? Is Richard Strauss less significant than Stravinsky? We certainly consider it to be immensely important to study genuine music that comes from the people. Haydn, Mozart and Schubert did so, and Bartók was especially preoccupied with folk music. The story about Bluebeard and Judith, revolving around the eternal subject of the relationship between man and woman, is an opera that also shows where there can be a musical basis for the fu-ture. In December 2012 this production for the opening of the Festspielhaus was a commitment to principles in music and humanity. The successful production is again being presented to a larger audience together with another 20th-century classic: Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.

RICHARD WAGNERDer Ring des Nibelungen

The new version of the 24-hour-Ringin celebration of the 70th birthday of festival president

Dr Hans Peter Haselsteiner

In the festival summer 2014 Gustav Kuhn and his team again turn to one of the most important artistic successes in the his-tory of the festival in Erl as the entire Ring des Nibelungen is on the programme in a newly adapted staged version. In the past fifteen years Erl has become established as a pilgrimage destination for fans of Wagner from all over the world, as at-tested among others by the Neue Musikzeitung in a review of the new production of Lohengrin in summer 2012: “Musically of the highest standard and a more homogeneous production than in Bayreuth” – a description that sets standards for the presentation of the 24-hour-Ring and Wagner performances in Erl.

CARL ORFFCarmina Burana

This is indeed the most played work of the 20th century and very probably the most frequently performed choral work in the history of music. To write music that is certainly “con-temporary” and yet can arouse and grip audiences despite its complexity – not many other 20th-century composers have succeeded in achieving the same kind of popularity as Carl Orff with his Carmina Burana. The choral movement O Fortuna has made an awe-inspiring impact on the masses, and inevitably Orff’s music is nowadays frequently associated with advertise-ments for chocolates, with film promotion or body building competitions. All sorts of events, varying in magnitude, are enhanced with these sounds. Nevertheless, Carmina Burana can polemicize because it cannot be clearly categorized. Per-formed in context with Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard new aspects are opened up in Erl.

ANTON BRUCKNER

In 2014 the Tyrol Festival Erl continues the long-standing preoccupation with Anton Bruckner’s œuvre in almost cyc- lical form as the symphonic complement to the Ring tetralogy. The Te Deum is the work that Bruckner recommended as the completion to his Ninth Symphony as he had a premonition that he would not be able to compose the final movement. Helgoland is the last work he completed; it is hardly known and yet it is undoubtedly a masterpiece. Both works are to be heard in the opening concert.

The symphonies: the Seventh, Eighth and Ninth are so in-fluenced by the sound of the Ring that Bruckner no longer wanted to do without Wagner tubas. Palestrina’s compositional technique amalgamates with the specific sound of a tuba as intended by Richard Wagner. In the last three symphonies the contrapuntal complexity gives way to an exploration of tonal possibilities by the tubas which as an idea in sound leads in this form directly to Gustav Mahler.

The last three symphonies are certainly a singular cres- cendo. Bruckner ambitiously liked to dedicate his work. For instance the Seventh is dedicated to King Ludwig II of Bavaria; the Eighth to Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. Bruckner dedicated his Ninth Symphony to God. The Seventh Symphony brought the success in the world of music he had so long been seeking; the Eighth then seemed to lift off from the human sphere, and ultimately the Ninth rose to even greater heights and is a pointer (not only because it was first performed in 1903) into the 20th century.

“Is the swan coming now?” After Lohengrin this question now also refers to the opening of the series of chamber music con-certs with Davide Cabassi and his friends. For the first time the chamber music concerts take place in the Festspielhaus, and it is here too that the stage becomes a compositional (children’s) playground. Charmingly compiled, the transfigured, dream-like pieces of the French Impressionists invite listeners to take a walk through memories of their own childhood. Everything leads to the onomatopoeic, poetic grace of the world famous swan as it arrives, zoologically complemented by a world pre-miere by Deraco / Doetsch. Any questions?

CATCH-POP STRING-STRONG

It is a remarkable gift to create new forms from various kinds of building bricks, held together with the mortar of wit and virtuosity. Jelena Popržan and Rina Kaçinari are well versed in this art: one is from Serbia, the other a Kosovo-Albanian and together they play Bach, traditional music from the Bal-kans or from the Scottish Highlands, pop songs and their own compositions in which one can hear many different influ-ences in the best sense of the word. In their music Catch-Pop String-Strong unite stories and their interpretations from all different kinds of places, times and perspectives. Playing the cello, viola, using their own voices and as much respect as necessary they build bridges between civilizations, centuries and musical traditions as if it were the easiest and most obvi-ous thing to do in the world.

FASCINATING RHYTHMA song celebrates its 90th anniversary …

Think big! Emily Righter has already gained many fans in the short time she has been performing at the Tyrol Festival in Erl and in the Festspielhaus there is now room for all those who want to hear her unique voice and enjoy the perfect ambience of her concerts. Last summer during the festival the concert hall in the tavern Blaue Quelle was full to bursting when the young and pretty American wearing a dirndl made it very clear that her repertoire includes more than only the trouser roles in Mozart operas. Now Emily Righter has compiled a programme of melodies from musicals, blues and jazz classics, which she performs in the Festspielhaus, and of course she hopes that here too she can sing to a capacity audience.

PIANO RECITAL

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVENSonata No. 2 in F major, op. 10

Sonata No. 3 in E flat major, op. 31Sonata No. 32 in C minor, op. 111

Ludwig van Beethoven is inseparably linked with the name Jasminka Stančul, not only since she won the Beethoven Prize in 1989. For many years now Beethoven has been at the centre of her broad repertoire and musical thinking. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung described her interpretation of the Sonata op. 111 as “a faultless reading, considered and reflective, with a masterly technique.” In winter 2013/2014 she worked with Gustav Kuhn on Beethoven’s Piano Concertos Nos. 4 and 5. Following outstanding performances in dialogue with the or-chestra she is now giving her first recital in the Festspielhaus, again in a Beethoven programme and with one of the most demanding of all piano sonatas, the renowned op. 111.

Three piano concertos but without orchestral accompaniment? Don’t be surprised, Davide Cabassi is our host. In the perform- ance of the original version of the piano concertos you can experience precisely what is the essence of chamber music: the reduction to the best possible minimum arrangement. The or-chestra of the second evening in the series Cabassi and Friends is a string quartet, an exemplary small-scale sound made up of musicians from the orchestra of the Tyrol Festival Erl. Mozart’s piano concertos become finely nuanced miniatures in sound which will surprise and delight even the most knowledgeable music connoisseur.

ALMA

ALMA. The soul. A famous artist. The high Alpine pasture? ALMA is the name of a group of five young musicians for whom folk music has always been a part of their life. They all grew up in families of musicians and so from their earliest childhood playing traditional music was just as important as going to school or riding a bicycle. Their music, sounds and rhythms come directly from the soul and aim to reach people where their own roots slumber. The musicians of ALMA are equally concerned with tradition as with contemporary in-terpretation and collective improvisation because folk music always adjusts to its time and to the people living in it. This results in a broad, carefully chosen repertoire ranging from ancient traditional melodies, yodels and songs, also includ-ing their own compositions, as well as new arrangements of well-known pieces.

THE START POINT

In the project The Start Point five versatile and experienced musicians have committed themselves completely to the search for a unique, compact sound. It is their declared aim to link a musical reflection with the most topical sound worlds in order to create a resultant blend of the most varied styles from jazz to black.

The repertoire consists almost exclusively of original pieces claiming to do justice to the musical individuality and char-acter in the midst of the countless influences of the “fusion” movement. Paying attention to dynamics, sound experience, timbre, groove, harmony between melody and virtuosity the evening promises to be an intensive musical experience that will explore new facets of the excellent acoustics in the Fest-spielhaus.

BLUESPENSION

We knew it all along: blues did not evolve in the Missis-sippi delta but by Austria’s lakes and up in the mountains. For many years now Florian Eisner, Bina Blumencorn, Stefan Moser and Dominik Kaschke have been researching on the highest academic and comedic level the mutual roots of blues and Austrian folk music. Sophisticated music cabaret to round off the week of chamber music.

Le Sacre du printempsBÉLA BARTÓK

The Miraculous Mandarin, op. 19

A ritual sacrifice in spring – in the summer. A unique master-piece of Russian Expressionism comes to Erl not before time and in the hands of Davide Cabassi the grand piano – described in the broadest sense also as a percussion instrument – is trans-formed into a polyrhythmic miraculous machine. Rhythm is it! A true ritual dance hour like Le Sacre du printemps cannot manage without real percussion. Cabassi invites his timpanist colleague into the circle of friends of Monday’s chamber music. Three movements from the ballet Petrushka and from Bartók’s virtuoso and fiery vision of The Miraculous Mandarin will make this evening a rhythmically exuberant piano rave.

TRIBUTE TO SINATRA

Lucio Gallo is a well-known and popular international opera star; his performances as Scarpia, Macbeth, Iago on the world’s major stages are highly acclaimed; his engagement diary is full for the coming years – that is what is generally known about him. What do we know though about the roots of the singer Lucio Gallo, who as a young man first played in a band before he started to sing. He makes his debut in our Ring production, and in the Tribute to Sinatra we accompany him on a journey to his roots, something he and we have long wanted to do. This is the chance to experience an opera star in a totally dif-ferent mode and to revel in the classic hits made famous by Frank Sinatra.

RING-SESSIONMale chorus of Götterdämmerung

As a preliminary evening before the preliminary evening, shortly before the absolute highlight with the HPH-24-hour-Ring, the doors of the Festspielhaus open up to a project that once again stresses the desire to achieve creative friction at the Tyrol Festival Erl. The most important motifs from Wag-ner’s Ring des Nibelungen will be approached by two very contrasting groups: male choir versus or with jazz combo. Eduardo Javier Maffei, saxophone player, composer and musi-cian through and through, merges Wagner’s wealth of motifs with jazzy developments, whereas the male chorus of Göt-terdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods) transports the themes of the Ring into a new world of sound.

Born in Turrach in Styria, Gustav Kuhn studied conducting with Hans Swarowsky, Bruno Maderna and Herbert von Kara-jan at the Conservatories in Vienna and Salzburg and gradu-ated from Salzburg University in philosophy, psychology and psychopathology. Kuhn was only 24 years old when he won the prestigious international conducting competition of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF).

From 1970 to 1977 Kuhn worked as chorus director and conductor at the Istanbul Opera House, then as first Kapell- meister at the Dortmund Opera House. During this time, he already gave guest performances in Palermo, Naples and Bo-logna. Later he had engagements as guest conductor in Rome, Florence Venice and Zurich.

Gustav Kuhn conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala in Milan, the Orchestre National de France in Paris, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the NHK Orchestra in Tokyo, and, last but not least, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1974, Kuhn founded the Institute for Aleatoric Music in Salzburg. In 1977, he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera conducting Richard Strauss’ Elektra. Only a year later,

in 1978, he made his debut at the Bavarian State Opera and the Salzburg Festival; the following season Maestro Kuhn made his conducting debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Gar-den in London and was engaged as General Music Director in Berne. In 1980, Kuhn conducted the opening production at the Glyndebourne Festival. More debuts followed in 1981 conduct-ing Fidelio in Chicago; 1982 Così fan tutte at the Paris Opera; 1984 Tannhäuser at Milan’s Scala; 1986 Un ballo in maschera at Arena di Verona.

In 1986, Gustav Kuhn started to direct and produce operas so as to achieve a greater artistic union between a work’s visual and musical components. Kuhn produced and staged The Fly-ing Dutchman (Trieste), Parsifal and La Bohème (Naples), Don Carlos and Don Carlo (Torino), Mozart’s Da Ponte operas (Fes-tival di Macerata), Rossini’s Otello (Berlin, Braunschweig and Tokyo), La Bohème, Falstaff and La Traviata (Tokyo), Capriccio (Milan), among others.

After making his debut as an opera director with his staging of The Flying Dutchman in Trieste (set design and costumes: Peter Pabst), he developed the “Hall Opera” series for Suntory Hall Opera in Tokyo (1993).

Kuhn conducted at the Salzburg Festival until 1997 (1978 debut, 1980 Figaro, 1989 Un ballo in maschera; 1992, 1994 and 1997 La clemenza di Tito).

From 1983 to 1985, Kuhn served as general music direc-tor at the Bonn Opera, which was followed by engagements as head conductor of the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and later as artistic director of the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. Kuhn headed the music festival in Macerata from 1990 to 1994; from 1994, he served as artistic director of the Filarmonica Marchigiana. Gustav Kuhn was artistic director of the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento from January 2003 until De-cember 2012.

In 1992, Kuhn founded the Accademia di Montegral, based at the Convento dell’Angelo in Lucca (Tuscany) in 2000. In 1997, Kuhn founded the Tyrol Festival Erl. After working on Wagner’s Ring for several years, Kuhn took the production on tour for the first time in 2005 (Santander) and produced the now legendary 24-hour Ring. The same year Dr. Hans Peter Haselsteiner agreed to become president of the Tyrol Festival Erl. The construction of the new Festspielhaus, which was opened on 26th December 2012, was made possible by Mr. Haselsteiner’s efforts and commitment.

In addition to its Summer festival the Tyrol Festival Erl now also hosts a Winter Festival that runs annually from 26th December to 6th January. The general director is Gustav Kuhn. The new winter programme focuses on works from the Italian and the bel canto repertoire as well as Mozart operas.

In the summer, the old Passionsspielhaus continues to be an important performance venue for the Festival’s Wagner and Strauss productions. With the performance of Lohengrin in July 2012, Gustav Kuhn brought his cycle of Wagner’s ten greatest operas at Erl’s Festspielhaus to a close.

Gustav Kuhn’s compositions include orchestral works, masses and solo pieces; his instrumentation of Janáček’s Di-ary of One Who Disappeared met with great acclaim at the Opéra National de Paris (released by Edition Peters). From 2007 to 2011 Maestro Kuhn performed a series of classical concerts entitled Delirium in his former hometown of Salzburg.

Gustav Kuhn’s recordings are available on the labels col legno, BMG, EMI, CBS, Capriccio, Supraphon, Orfeo, Koch / Schwann, Coreolan, ARTE NOVA and others. His book Aus Liebe zur Musik (Out Of Love for Music) was published by Henschel.

Orchestra of the Tyrol Festival Erl

The well-balanced and rich sound of the orchestra comes from a highly motivated and dedicated ensemble that has devel-oped and grown over the years. The orchestra’s members are not newly engaged every season, then ignored, and discarded. Quite the opposite: many of the musicians have been enjoying the personal support of Gustav Kuhn and his Accademia di Montegral for many years.

Founded in the summer of 1999, the orchestra generated enthusiastic audiences and critical acclaim in its first year at the Tyrol Festival Erl. The orchestra is an amalgamation of the finest talents, experienced musicians from renowned in-ternational orchestras, chamber music specialists and teachers who share a passion for classical works and a dedication to musical perfection.

With Gustav Kuhn as spiritus rector and music director, the orchestra has received lavish praise and great international acclaim.

The orchestra’s repertoire is extremely diverse and includes Richard Wagner’s ten dramatic operas, operas by Strauss, Mo-zart, Beethoven and Rossini, Beethoven’s symphonies and a wide range of classical music from Baroque to Romantic, as well as first performances of commissioned works.

Choral Academy of the Tyrol Festival Erl

Founded in 2007, the Choral Academy is a musical partner of equal standing with the Festival Orchestra. The Choral Acad-emy offers its members a holistic development as artists, and focuses on strengthening the individual voice within the choral setting.

The artistic director of the ensemble is Gustav Kuhn. The Choral Academy’s repertoire ranges from a cappella music to great concert and opera productions.

Since 2009 the Choral Academy greatly contributes to the success of the Tyrol Festival Erl with their performances in Fi-delio, Elektra and Richard Wagner’s opera works, fulfilling also the expectations of the audience with their superb perform- ances in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem and Orff’s Carmina Burana. Since the opening of the Festspielhaus in December 2012 there is a new focus in the repertoire development of the Choral Academy for bel canto works and primarly for Giuseppe Verdi’s Baroque operas. Par-ticularly important for Maestro Kuhn and the sixteen members of the Choral Academy is also the development of a baroque choir sound with Bach’s works and his contemporaries.

Costume Design Studio of the Tyrol Festival Erl

Musical diversity, unconventional views and a commitment to art outside the mainstream industry have defined the produc-tions of the Tyrol Festival Erl from the very beginning. Gustav Kuhn’s quest to create an unmistakable signature style for the festival led to the formation of a dedicated design studio in 2007. As head of the design studio, Lenka Radecky is respon-sible for both the technical and artistic aspects of costume design. Mrs Radecky has surrounded herself with a highly qualified team of costume makers, tailors and assistants.

The design studio of the Tyrol Festival Erl combines highest aspirations to quality and expertise with profound knowledge, highly specialized work experience, and a passion for (opera) materials. The design studio of the Tyrol Festival Erl is experi- enced in all aspects of costume design and production. All designing and sewing is done by hand and with great attention to even the minutest detail.

Accademiadi Montegral

In today’s competitive free market young professional singers, conductors, répétiteurs, stage designers and costume design-ers often find themselves left out in the cold and therefore ultimately doomed to fail. What once was the responsibility of theatre and music directors, namely the support and profes-sional training of young artists, today is often subject to their arbitrariness and the dictate of the entertainment industry. In addition, the opera is in the throes of an economic and structural crisis: high operating costs, expensive technology, extravagant sets and costumes, a tedious – and sometimes hostile – state bureaucracy often unsympathetic towards the arts, and incompetence on the part of the people involved in producing opera add to the already challenging situation. As a result there are many poorly trained and easy-to-replace young musicians, and, ultimately, a decreasing interest in opera, es-pecially among younger people. The Accademia di Montegral sees its purpose in providing support and education as well as promoting the art form of opera. The groundwork was laid in 1987 when conductor and director Gustav Kuhn founded the Accademia in Italy. Later, sister institutions were set up in Germany (1993) and in Japan (1994, Tokyo Suntory-Hall).

The Convento dell’Angelo near Lucca (Tuscany) has been the artistic centre of the Accademia di Montegral since October

2000. The way the Accademia works is that certain topics are chosen which are then discussed and debated by students and renowned experts (e.g. elocutionists, répétiteurs, conductors, stage directors, etc.) during class. The Accademia also provides practice-oriented information on a variety of topics such as casting, fees, etc.

The Accademia offers its high-level support not only to tal-ented young singers but also to artists from related fields such as instrumentalists, conductors, composers and stage directors. This way it is possible for the Accademia di Montegral to pro-duce and perform complete opera productions independently. Some of the Accademia di Montegral’s esteemed honorary members include Francisco Araiza, Albert Dohmen, Gertrud Ottenthal, Peter Pabst and Renato Bruson. Funding and support for the Accademia’s programmes comes largely from sponsors and private benefactors.

The Accademia di Montegral is located inside the Convento dell’Angelo, a monastery of the Passionists, a Roman Catholic religious order. After hundreds of years at the Convento, which is in a beautiful location high above Lucca, a shortage of new priests and the dilapidated condition of the monastery forced the Passionists to leave the Convento in the 1990s and look for a new use for the building. In 2000 Gustav Kuhn’s Accademia di Montegral found its home in the Convento.

The Passionists, who live their faith through commitment to those who suffer, are dedicated to social work and fight-ing poverty worldwide. The Passionists of Brazil have several projects running in Salvador, Itabuna and Jequie to offer street children a better future and an alternative to life on the streets.

The Accademia di Montegral supports the work of the Pas-sionist Order in Brazil. Any assistance as well as donations are greatly appreciated. Please make your donation payable to: “Projekt Montegral, Hilfe für die Straßenkinder Brasiliens”

In 1988 the Munich Philharmonic played a concert conducted by Sergiu Celibidache in the Passionsspielhaus Erl. This can be regarded now almost as a stroke of fate and so it seems only fitting that the musicians from this orchestra want to explore the wonderful acoustics of the new Festspielhaus. Three further concerts from their celebrated chamber music series in Munich will now also be presented until May 2014.

IS SEVEN A GOOD NUMBER FOR CHAMBER MUSIC?

Seven soloists are certainly not an orchestra! In 1799/1800 Ludwig van Beethoven created the prototype of a large-scale piece of chamber music – and many composers followed the famous example.

THE MAGIC FLUTE IN POCKET FORM

CHRISTIAN KOLONOVITSEl Juez

A new opera with a highly explosive subject, the first appear-ance in Erl of one of the most important tenors of our time and his last great opera role. José Carreras suffered a dread-ful blow of fate at the height of his career but fought back and continued to give recitals. For the world premiere of the opera El Juez (The Judge) by the Austrian composer Christian Kolonovits, José Carreras returns to the opera stage to present what will be the last opera role of his career. There will be only three performances of the opera in August 2014 in Europe and they take place in the Festspielhaus Erl.

José Carreras is looking forward to his debut in Erl: “It’s a great challenge for me but one that I am very glad to take on as both the subject of the opera as well as the music are of deep concern to me. The modern opera house in Erl is the ideal venue for this world premiere. I am very pleased that the

Tyrol Festival Erl, the Bilbao Opera House and Kupfer Kultur are working together for this production.”

The opera is based on a libretto by Angelika Messner and in a fictitious story relates the fate of the children who were shut away in monasteries during the Franco dictatorship. The production is staged by the renowned Spanish director Emilio Sagi; David Giménez conducts.

Final Concert Master-class for conductors

Thu. 14 August 2014, 7 p.m., Festspielhaus

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZARTExcerpts from Così fan tutteLUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

Movements from Symphonies Nos. 2 and 4

In 2013, immediately after the summer festival season, a super master-class for conductors was held in Erl. “Super” because Maestro Kuhn devoted himself exclusively to a hand-picked selection of young conductors and gave them the opportunity to work intensively with the festival orchestra under the best possible conditions for a master-class. Kuhn is well known as a strict taskmaster and for working with great dedication; in this course he conveys how essential a perfect technique is for conducting but above all knowledge of the philosophical and contextual background. For the finale of the master-class for conductors in 2014 we are again presenting our young conductors in a concert and give insights into the forthcom-ing productions in Erl. The programme includes excerpts from Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte with the ensemble from the Erl Da Ponte cycle (which will be completed in winter 2014/2015), as well as movements from Beethoven’s Second and Fourth Symphonies. A challenge for the conductors, enjoyment for our guests.

Erl and Surroundings

Erl – The Passion Play and Festival Village in Tyrol

Erl (pop. 1,450) is located in the North-Tyrolean lower valley of the River Inn, on the border with Bavaria and about 15 kilo- metres from Kufstein. Tyrol’s northernmost and lowest com-munity once was a Roman estate known as Praedium Aureli-anum. A Mithra stone with the inscription DIM PRO SALUTE was found during excavations in the parish and shows that Romans settled here as early as 300 AD. The first time Erl was mentioned in an official document, the Notitia Arnonis, a list of the possessions of Salzburg’s archbishopric, is 788 AD. Erl and Erl’s parish, which is dedicated to Saint Andreas the Apostle, were destroyed several times during the course of his-tory. Under Emperor Maximilian, Erl, together with Rattenberg, Kitzbühel and Kufstein, was finally ceded to Tyrol in 1504. Erl is one of the Inntal Valley’s oldest villages.Erl’s main attractions include the Blaue Quelle (Blue Spring), which has an average flow rate of 700 litres per second; also the Trockenbach waterfall, the legendary Erler Herz – a heart-shaped mountain pass – and the Calvary overlooking the Inntal valley. Great and easily accessible vista mountains are Kranz- horn (1,367 m) with its two summit crosses, and Spitzstein (1,596 m). The former Gasthof Zollhaus Inn at the wooden Inn Bridge boasts a memorial plaque for Adolf Pichler, the famous geologist and local historian who was born here in 1819.
