2Mechanical Keys:A key is define the piece inserted in a axial direction between a shaft and hub to prevent relative rotation but allow sliding movement along the shaft if required.

5 Saddle Keys

“Saddle key are taper keys which are sunk into the hub only. It is suitable for light duty.”

They are further divided into two types:

Hollow Saddle keys

Flat saddle keys

6Hollow Saddle Key

“This key has its underside hollow out so that it can be placed on the curved surface of the shaft.”

7Flat Saddle Key

“In this the flat surface is made on the shaft over which the key is placed in position.”

8Tangent Keys

“The tangent keys are fitted in pair at right angles.Each key can be rotated in only one direction.These are used in Large heavy duty shaft.”

9Splines

“These keys are made along with the shaft means they are part of it,fitted in the keyways broached In the hub, which are known as splines shaft.”

10Round Keys

Round keys are circular in part which fits into holes drilled partially in shaft with fairly in hub.They are most suitable for low power devices”

11Sunk Keys

“ The sunk keys are provided half in the keyway of the shaft and half in the keyway of the hub or boss of the pulley or gear.”

Gib-head sunk key

Rectangular Sunk Key

“Rectangular Sunk Key is the one, in which height and width are not Equal”

13Gib-head Sunk Key

“It is a rectangular sunk key with a head at one end known as Gib-head. It is a usually provided to facilitate the removal of key.”

14Woodruff Sunk Key“It is an adjustable sunk key. in the form of a semi-circular disc of uniform thickness. The key fits into a semi-circular keyway in the shaft and the top of the key fits into a plain rectangular key way in the hub of the wheel.”

15Feather Sunk Key

“It is a key attached to one member of a pair and permitting relative motion axial movement thus it is particular kind of parallel key which permits axial moment.”
