What Is A Rainforest ??The Things That Make A Rainforest Are Rainforests Support The Greatest Diversity Of Living Organisms On Earth. Although They Cover Less Than 2% Of Earth's Surface, Rainforests House More Than 50% Of Plants And

Animals On Earth. Here Are Some Examples Of The Richness Of Rainforests:

Rainforests Have 170,000 Of The World's 250,000 Known Plant Species InThe United States Has 81 Species Of Frogs, While Madagascar Which Is Smaller Than Texas, May Have 300 Species. Europe Has 321 Butterfly

Species, While A Park In The Rainforest Of Peru (Manu National Park) Has 1300 Species.

Who Lives In A Rainforest ??There Are Many Animals That Live In The Rainforest. They Are Birds, Echidna, Platypus, Butterfly, Sloth, Poison Frog, Tree Snail, Macaw,

Reptiles, Amphibians, Bandicoot, Insects, Worms And FishThere Are Many Plants That Are In The Rainforest. They Are

Bromeliads,Buttress Roots, Carnivorous Plants, Epiphytes, Lianas, Orchids, Saprophytes, Stilt And Stranglers.

The People That Live In The Rainforest Are The :Pygmies:The Way They Live Is By Hunting And Gathering Food.

The Huli: They Are Only Seen In Papua New Guinea And Live In Big Group Houses.

The Yanomami: They Live In A Tent Looking Which Is Made By Vine And Leaf Thatch.

Wetlands

Page 6: Types Of Global Environments. Tropical Rainforests

What Are Wetlands ??Wetlands Are Wet! Water And Soil Are The Two Main Features Of The Wetlands. In Order To Be Classified As A Wetland, Water Must Be Present For A Specific Number Of Days. The Number Of Days Must Add Up To 7.5% Of The Area's Growing Season. The Water May Be Fresh Or Salty According To The Location Of The Wetland.Wet Conditions, Hydric Soil, And Hydrophytes Are All Characteristics Of The Wetlands. Wetland Soil Is Special Because It Is Hydric. Hydric Soil Contains A Lot Of Water And A Small Amount Of Oxygen. Wetland Plants Must Adapt To This Soil In Order To Grow In The Wet Conditions. They Are Called Hydrophytes, Or Water Loving Plants.

What Grows In Wetlands ??The Forested Layer Has Cotton Wood Trees, Lady Ferns, Venus Fly Traps, and Western Red Cedar Trees. Cotton Wood Trees Provide Homes For Many Birds, Squirrels, And Other Animals. The Western Red Cedar Tree Bark Is Used In Making Pain And Itch Relieving Medicines. The Venus Fly Trap Is A Carnivorous Plant That Helps Control The Insect Population. The Aquatic Layer Is Full Of Floating Plants. Duck Weeds, Water Ferns, And Water Lilies All Float On Top Of The Water. It Is The Food Source For Water Birds And Beavers. The Emergent Layer Is The Bank Area. This Is Where The Soft Stemmed Plants Live. The Emergent Layer Is Often Referred To As The Swaying Grass Area. The Stem And Root Parts Are Emerged In The Water And The Stick Parts Are Above The Water. Bullrush Sedge And Reed Canary Grass Provide Food And Shelter For The Migrating Birds, Deer, And Raccoons. Many Colourful Flowers Bloom From June To September.

Polar Lands

Page 9: Types Of Global Environments. Tropical Rainforests

What Is A Polar Land ??Polar Lands Are Located At The Northern-Most And Southern-Most Points Of The Earth. The Northern Polar Lands, Or Arctic, Have Been Inhabitated By People For Thousands Of Years, While In The Southern Polar Lands, Or Antarctica, Humans Are Newcomers To The Environment. In The North The Sami Of The Arctic Are An Indigenous Group Working Towards Self-Determination, While In The South The Scientific Community Work In Accordance With A Treaty That Aims To Protect The Continent.

What Grows In A Polar Land ??The Plants That Grow In Polar Regions Are Lichens ,Mosses ,Algae And Fungi, They Can Stand The Heat And Coldness At Night. Also There Are Saxifrage, Bearberrys Arctic Willows Arctic Moss Polar Fire And Aqapanthus They Are All Plants That Grow In The Polar Regions.

What Is A Grassland ??Grasslands Are Open Areas Where Grasses Or Grass-Like Plants Are The Dominant Vegetation And Where There Are Few Trees. Grasses Came To Dominate Over Other Species, Such As Trees, Because They Are Better Able To Thrive In Hot, Dry Climates Where Spring And Summer Rain Is Limited.
