•Aerosol mass concentration

•Particle counts

1. Gravimetric Sampling

Gravimetric Sampling

HSE Standard MDHS 14/4

+ Method for Determining Hazardous Substances

+ Sampling should be as long as possible for WEL and 15 minutes for STEL

+ Weight in mg/m3 & analysis by laboratory

+ 2-3 week turn-around time

Personal Monitoring

MUST be taken in the Breathing Zone

Sampling Results+ Laboratory identifies Amount of Hazard Collected (mg)

+ Amount of Air Pumped is identified by the Pump (m3)

+ Occupational Hygienist can Calculate mg/m3

+ If amount is too high – Corrective Action is mandatory!

But what happened?

Was it over the limit all of the time?

Or were there Peaks during the 8 hour sample?

Revolution in Real-time MonitoringThe DustTraks are:

+Continuous+Real-time +90 degree light scattering photometers+2 ranges – DustTrak II and DustTrak DRX

They are used to determine the mass concentration of dust aerosols

A built-in Pump allows the use of a variety of size-selective inlet conditioners

The addition of a Cyclone enables the Respirable fraction (4.0um @ 50%) to be measured

DustTrak DRX – the multichannel photometer

+ DustTrak DRX aerosol monitorsare advanced continuous real-time, 90° light-scattering

laser photometer that simultaneously measure mass and size fraction • No other monitor can do both!

+ Desktop and handheld monitors measure size-segregated mass fraction concentration • Total PM, PM10, PM4.0, PM2.5, and PM1.0 size fractions• Over a wide concentration range, 0.001 – 150 mg/m3

Page 17: Types of Dust Monitoring

Why is particle size important?

05/01/23© TSI Incorporated 17

+ Small particle low in mass but can cause major health effects

+ Occupational hygienists interested in PM 4 and below

+ DustTrak DRX can measure all these fractions, plus total mass at the same time

+ It is essentially a photometer and particle counter in one!!
