80 Beautiful Typefaces For Professional Design

Every now and again designers stumble upon the very same problem: the choice of a uniqueand beautiful typeface which manages to fulfill three basic tasks. Support the corporate identity,enrich the visual appearance and is compatible with the overall design. However, usually there aresimply too many options you can consider, which is why you need time to find the option you aremost comfortable with. Although the choice usually depends on clients’ requirements, it isnecessary to have some pretty starting points for your font decision.

So which typefaces are “bulletproof”? What fonts can be used effectively in almost every CorporateDesign? And what are the options for unique, but still incredibly beautiful typefaces?

We have answers. Over the last few days we’ve browsed through dozens of type foundries, readdozens of designers’ articles about typography, analyzed font rankings and visited bookmarked font-related suggestions. So this post has ‘em all. Well, OK, at least many of them.

Let’s take a look at over 80 gorgeous typefaces for professional design, based uponsuggestions from designers and web-developers all over the world. Most screenshots aretaken from the foundries and provided specimens – particularly on Veer.com and Fontshop.com.

This is a completely arbitrary list. Iʼm a professional typographer. I would never useany of them with the possible exception of Warnock. Helvetica, Univers and theirvariations are hopelessly overused, tired and BORING. The other faces you showare mostly quirky at best, inept at worst. This is easily the most amateurishcollection of “best” typefaces Iʼve seen in a long time.

The only reason a font would be ʻtiredʼ or ʻboringʼ is the context that you areusing it in. Helvetica is kicking by nicely and has remained a crowd favouritebased on its ability to adapt to its surroundings. It is not an aging fad, likemost ʻedgyʼ or ʻcoolʼ fonts, it is as good as you use it. That goes for prettymuch all fonts, except maybe Comic Sans.

Personally, I think this list is quite a bit (trying to avoid saying “waaay” … but,waaay) too long, and there really isnʼt enough variation, in my very humble opinion.I do usually quite appreciate the lists smashing puts up, but this one falls a bit shortfor me for several reasons. I do agree with Jules on most of his points … though,there are a few more I might use if I were feeling “quirky” :) … perhaps he just gotsick of sorting through so many fonts.

Bottom line for me, 80 typefaces is alot, and I donʼt feel I would have a full paletteif I were limited to the selection here.

good posting! this well help others who are not “a professional typographer” to pickand use different styles in their next letter, project,web, logo, etc.

choosing a good typseface is essential for corporate branding.

chossing the right fonts for the project, always makes a big impact. Just make sureit is consistent.:)

Haha, actually, I just re-read post #21:“Helvetica, Univers and their variations are hopelessly overused, tired andBORING”Disregard the “I do agree with Jules … ” comment, those fonts, and the others inthe list that I actually would consider classics (though most I would not) I think arevery versatile, and “overuse” is irrelevant to achieving oneʼs goals in a layout. I atfirst thought those were included in his “oaky” fonts … mustʼve been dizzy fromlooking through so many fonts … or perhaps the Depot double post through me off: )

35Good to see Univers made the list. Quite fond of that font. As well as the Corpidcollection (sadly it didnʼt make the list). I think Iʼve used it a little too religiously attimes.

Either way, a great list. Iʼm going to go out and see if I can find Flex now. :D

These fonts cost anywhere between $200-$1500 … you have to have to be eithera huge design company or simply mentally retarded to spend that money on a font.

…when there are so many great ones that are absolutely free. Make a list of FREEgood typefaces for professional design.

@Ramzi – if you value your time you will gladly pay for a high-quality, welldesigned font rather than use some free “professional” font you downloaded off theweb, since you will more than likely spend 2-3x as long manually adjusting thekerning in your type. Iʼm frequently shocked at how often I see bad typographymarring otherwise good designs, even on projects with the kind of financial backingthat would justify a higher attention to detail. It may seem trivial to some, but it isone small detail that separates the amateurs from the professionals.

I meant to ask this when I saw the Documentary film, Helvetica but given the roomwas full of intimidating designers, I declined. So Iʼll ask it here. I love all theexamples youʼve given in this post, but as a numbers guy I wondered whether a listof the top 80 fonts for numbers would be the same the list?

I find incredible how can it be possible for GEORGIA no to be listed here….Anyway, most of these are really fantastic fonts, such as the new ones made forthe new Windows Vista – “Cambria” and “Calibri”

wow – not sure about that list. Some Iʼd agrees with HelveticaNeue, Futura, etc –but others are kinda reaching. Myriad, for instance? Itʼs the default. Whathappened to the classic serif fonts? Garamond, Goudy, Giovanni. Or what LubalinGraph – you listed Rockwell in lieu of Lubalin Graph? Itʼs easily the more superiorslab serif.

Not impressed.

Nice list, FF Dax (Dax) is used in the TV series Californication btw. Surprised meallot, since it´s used often in the Corporated world

Not that iʼm complaining about your list (nor the choices from the differentdesigners involved in choosing these fonts) but i in my modest opinion this list istoo strongly biased to san serif typefaces (more then 80% os this list are sanserifs). San serifs are so profusely used nowadays that they are becoming boring,specially when thereʼs a huge niche of beautifull serifʼs and slab fonts around. Ialso must point that i would never , ever , use a font like Helvetica (or its numerousvariants), Futura, Avenir, Din, FF Meta, FF Dax, The Sans (and i find extremelystrange the this Lucas de Groot typeface didnt make it to the list since it wasprobably the most “instant classic” typeface designed in the last 2 decades) andthe likes in any of my designs unless the client pointed a gun to my head… theywhere overused and abused to the point of extreme boringness! Also not sointeresting is including on the list unavailable typefaces (like guardian that wont beavailable for some years since its a exclusive typeface) and unfinished typefaces,specially when the font scene is saturated with well designed san serif typefaces(its a world of choices out there). Unless your client is a huge corporation the islooking for a neutral image stay away from most of these san serifs (specially theclassic ones) because you would be falling into the boring world of the typefaceseveryone else is using. Apart from this thereʼs some unusual san serifs in the listthat are quite interesting (not many tho since most are the usual classics) andunless you only design headlines and posters the lack of serifs in the list makes itkinda incomplete. Overall its interesting list but a very unbalanced one since theresno script fonts, very little choices of serifs (for text bodies), almost no slab serifsand nothing of any other type categories that can give you designs that originallook.

I think itʼs funny how Microsoft uses Helvetica as their logo font (post number 33),but include the “knockoff” Arial in their operating system.

Guess they should practice what they preach… huh!? Why not use Arial…?

Does anyone else think that there could be a much better (i.e. affordable) fontpricing system? It seems to me that if more professional fonts were priced so thatindividuals could more reasonably afford them, foundries and designers mightstand to profit a bit more than they currently do when it is a rare individual (or evendesign house) that buys its fonts…

I agree that there need to be more serif fonts, but if you want a selection of“bulletproof” fonts then sans is usually a better way to go. A bulletproof font mustIMHO be legible in body copy, mousetype & headlines both in print and on theweb. Serif fonts can cause some legibility issues on the web. These are not vanityfonts.

And people are complaining about too many choices??? If you are too lazy toexamine an list of eighty, try digging through the thousands of great fonts available.This is nice set of SUGGESTIONS, but by no means can replace an experiencedeye.

Iʼve been designing for awhile now (~20 years) — including some (iffy) font design(you can look me up). As many have said, Iʼm not sure what this list is for:Professionals should already have some go-to fonts in each category (sans/serif,display/fancy, Egyptienne/slab, script, etc); non-professionals need FEWERchoices to avoid the kidnap note-pastiche that is often created by newbies. As forthe sans/serif debate, the ʻneedʼ for design synergy & the ʻrequirementsʼ of the webhave forced a transition from the more readable serif to the more legible sans serif

in body copy — something I donʼt think will go away too soon. In fact, Iʼm seeing atrend that is just the opposite of what I was taught for print: Sans copy & serifheadlines.

As for the users of this list: Many of these fonts are either dupes of more expensive(and very old) typefaces or are themselves one of the originals and has a freebieclone somewhere. Just pick one or two (or three as backups for variation) & stickwith them. Make your copy design changes using size, color or callouts (pullquotes). Choose your fonts based on what you want to convey (formal or informal,etc).

And those of you who thought Comic Sans should be on the list: Huh?! Not evenas a comic book font is Comic Sans a decent font. Check Blambot or Comicraft forREAL comic fonts.

Also, MS Arial was a dodge to escape paying Adobe fees for using Helvetica….

Can anyone say which of the sans serif fonts have a capital “I” with serifs, such asin OfficinaSans and BellGothic? I am the documentation manager for a hi-techcompany and we are redesigning our manuals. Frequently part numbers andspecification numbers use Roman numerals so itʼs important to have an uppercase“I” that canʼt be confused with a lower case “L.”

I am quite open to suggestions for fonts that cork well for technical documentationin print on the screen. My tendency is towards fonts that are somewhat condensedso I can fit a maximum of information on a page thereby minimizing paginationissues. The flip side is to avoid having pages looking too crowed.

All recommendations gratefully accepted.

I love that you placed Helvetica at the top. I know it tends to elicit strong responsesfrom designers, both good and bad, but I think thatʼs a symptom of its power indesign. As part of my personal design growth, I have crossed over from the “canʼtstand it” to “love it deeply.” (This happened about the same time I stopped havingfavorite colors and started having favorite color combinations. There is no uglycolor, only a color in the wrong context.)

There are many other amazing fonts on this list – thanks for the reference!

Nice list! but i think it should have more serif fonts. Garamond, dtl fleichmann,Didots, Archer and lot of the stuff from hoeefler & Fere jones!When it comes to the standart fonts like Helvetica and Futura, it is a reason thatthere are overused. Its because there are very good typefaces! I think they have tobe on list of the best typography. no doubt! Its not the fonts thats bad its thedesigners job to be creative and use different styles and try out new idees!I have worked as a grafic designer for about four years now and experienced thatthose fonts are banned. That is stupid!They will always be there and think they look very god in combination with newfonts.

Nothing wrong with presenting a bunch of typefaces, but without any context itʼsstill hard to know what to do with each one and how to combine them.

I recently bought 1000 fonts by Martin, Dodd and Davis and was prettydissapointed when so little info or examples was available on each font (the fewexamples that are there are for Helvetica and other commonly known and usedfonts…) as to make deciding for or against it almost impossible without a deeptypographic knowledge . If I had that already, Iʼd probably also know the typefacesIʼd want for certain situation by heart. The ordering via alphabet in that book isnʼtlogical either, I wouldʼve loved them sorted by time period, or suggested use or

If I could just ask for one favour: please please never use the words “fresh” and“design” in conjunction again, unless there is some sort of fruit or bread involved. Iget goosebumps whenever I hear or read these in a briefing. Nobody has everasked for a stale design. Itʼs the most useless descriptor I could think of, moresoeven than “modern” and “young”, which can actually be realised in a design.
