munity radio network, police say they areproud tobeassociatedwith thegreaterTableView community.Speaking during a crime meeting hostedby sector 3 forum last week, police com-mander Dirk Vosloo lauded the efforts of pa-trollers and security companies in makingthe area safer. Vosloo, along with sector

commander Warrant Officer Riaan Prins,provided an overview of the current crimesituation in the sector.Vosloo highlighted progress made incrime fighting initiatives over the years.“I am always so proud to stand in thesemeetings. The situation in Table View isvery different from what it was a few yearsago when at one stage I was literally on myknees calling for assistance. Now we havethousands of neighbourhood watch mem-bers, close to 500 street committees and theradio network which we are very proud of,”he said.

Giving an overview of crime stats, Prinsexplained that from mid-June to mid-July,various crimes in sector three have been ona downward spiral. These include assaultwith the intent to inflict grievous bodilyharm, business burglaries, residential bur-glaries, car-jackings and drugs, among oth-ers.For sector 3, which includes Table View,Flamingo Vlei and Sunridge, Prins ex-plained while theft of motor vehicles had de-creased, theft out of motor vehicles had in-creased.

Provincial police descended on SummerGreens last week and executed severalarrests.

According to a statement, Operation Fielawas carried out on Thursday 16 July wherepolice along with other law enforcementagencies conducted searches at pre-identi-fied residences during the early hours.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieuten-antColonelAndrèTraut saidavehicle checkpoint was conducted at the only entranceand exit to the neighbourhood.

“The presence of police was exceptionally

well received by lawabiding citizenswho re-ported illegal activity spontaneously.”

During the operation 55 premises, 82 vehi-cles and 196 persons were searched, whichresulted in the arrest of three male suspectsin their thirties for being in possession of1kg tik with a street value of R275 000.

A 45-year-old man was also arrested afterit was found he had 2g of cocaine in his pos-session.

With the assistance of the Department ofHome Affairs, 34 undocumented personswere also arrested.

Authorities are investigating the circum-stances surrounding a collision in Koe-berg Road in which 15 people were in-jured last week.

According to a report from ER24 para-medics, a collision between a taxi and acar took place at the intersection of Koe-berg and Plattekloof roads onWednesday15 July.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasingsays on arrival, paramedics found some

patients lying in the area surroundingthe collision and some walking around.

“The taxi was lying on its side. Para-medics assessed the patients and foundthat they had sustained minor to moder-ate injuries.

“The patients were treated and trans-ported to local hospitals for furthermedi-cal care. The exact cause of the collisionis unknown. Authorities were on scenefor further investigations.”

MyCiTi peak express implementedA new MyCiTi express service along the

Table View corridor was launchedthis week.

With the addition of new 18-metre high-floor buses the service will provide a rapidjourney to and from the Civic Centre stationduring peak-hour periods.

The express service was launched on Mon-day with the new buses, which can carry 131passengers each, added to the T01 trunkroute.

City mayco member for transport, BrettHerron, said the new fleet is a response tothe growing demand for the MyCiTi serviceon the T01.

This route, he says, is one of the busiestand most popular MyCiTi routes in the city

and the municipality wants to ensure theycontinue to meet the residents’ expectations.“We are also introducing an express serviceso we can reduce commuters’ waiting andtravel time during the peak-hour periods,”he says.

The buses providing the new express ser-vice will only stop at the Wood, Table View,Racecourse, and Woodstock stations enroute to the Civic Centre and back.

Express buses that start their first trip ofthe day from the Stables depot will maketheir first stop at the MyCiTi station in Du-noon, but all the other express buses willstart at the Wood station.

“With the new express service, commut-ers can expect to see an express bus – marked

‘X01a’ – every six minutes at the Wood, TableView, Racecourse and Woodstock stationsduring the morning peak-hour. If one thencounts the other T01 buses that operate inaccordance with the normal T01 timetable,MyCiTi passengers at the Wood, Table View,Racecourse and Woodstock stations will beable to board a MyCiTi bus every three min-utes,” sats Herron.

The first express bus will depart from Du-noon station at 06:02 on week days and thefirst express bus from Wood station at 06:12.The last express bus will depart from Woodstation at 08:30.

In the afternoon peak-hour, the first ex-press buses will depart Civic Centre stationat 15:53, stopping at Woodstock, Racecourse,

Table View and Wood stations. Express bus-es whose last trips are to Stables depot in theafternoon peak will stop at Dunoon station.

The last express bus will depart at 18:29from the Civic Centre station on weekdays.

The express buses will be marked as fol-lows:

. ‘X01a Civic Centre Express – all busestravelling to the Civic Centre station

. ‘X01b Wood express– buses travellingfrom Civic Centre station to Wood station

. ‘X01a Dunoon Express – buses travellingfrom Civic Centre station to Dunoon station

As the winter brings increasingnumbers of whales to our shores, thechances of the giants being tangledin ropes, nets and lobster traps in-creases.

The South African Whale Disen-tanglement Network (SAWDN)headed Mike Meyers, says on aver-age, 15 to 17 cases of whale entangle-ment are reported every year. How-ever, this number is increasing an-nually as the population increases,he says.

There have been eight cases thisyear already and it is only the startof the whale season, expected to peakin September.

Ten years ago, a large number ofentanglements were reported,prompting the department of envi-ronmental affairs to approach thelobster industry to fund trainingfrom an American whale disentan-glement specialist.

The department invited a range ofroleplayers and SAWDN was born,with basic training and handling ofequipment taught on a mechanicalwhale tail.

The network now includes the Dol-phin Protection Action Group, Na-tional Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI),Natal Sharks Board, researchersand whale watchers, Meyers said.This has created 17 centres along theSouth African coast.

The network, which is now thefourth largest in the world, is also af-filiated to the International WhalingCommission and shares informationand best practice techniques with or-ganisations from other countries.

The public should report anysighting of an entangled whale im-mediately, says Meyer. There havebeen reports of people being killedby whales in the past, and peopleshould never attempt to free a whalethemselves.

The network will immediately dis-patch a boat to locate the animal and

monitor it.The network has a 100% success

rate in disentangling whales trappedon the sea bottom. However, whalesentangled but able to break free aredifficult to follow, and an entangledwhale can face a very slow death.

Disentangling the whale can bevery dangerous, says Meyer.

While humpback whales easilytire and will stop thrashing about,southern right whales tend to kicktheir tails sideways and this cancause serious injury.

Safety is paramount.“It’s a very scary thing the first

time you assist a whale. Many volun-teers go out with their heart in theirthroats,” he says.

Road works warningIt may be a bumpy ride for now, but road-works along the R27 are still underway.The project is being undertaken by the

WesternCapeDepartment of Transport andPublicWorks to resurface the road betweenMilnerton and Melkbosstrand. The R71mproject started in April and is scheduled forcompletion early next year.According to a recent statement, edge

their own safety as well as for that of con-struction workers, to obey all traffic in-structions, including speed limits, and todrive carefully. Road conditions changedaily as work progresses and motoristsshould be vigilant when driving along sec-tions that are under construction,” La Hoesays.

The Melkbos community are invited tojoin the Melkbosstranders lantern-litbeach walk from 18:00 on Friday 24 July.

What started off as an exercise to obtainConsol energy saving lights Melkboscommunity members could put to gooduse during load shedding, ended up in anamazing effort by one community mem-ber, Karin Dreyer.

In one month, Dreyer delivered 1200Consol lights to the Melkbosstrand com-munity at cost price, after making threetrips to Stellenbosch to fulfil the orders.

“It’s awesomewhat the community cando when we pull together,” she says.

After the third bulk order, the commu-nity members engaged in conversations

on how they could give back to the com-munity. These discussions on social me-dia led to a lantern walk on the beach inaid of a selected social charity or organi-sation.

Community members are invited tobring their lanterns and donations suchas food, clothing and blankets for abusedchildren.

A call has beenmade to assist an elderlycouple who lost their belongings in afire last week.

According to City of Cape Town Fire andRescue Services spokesperson Theo Layne,they were called to the scene shortly before11:00 on Wednesday 15 July to attend theblaze at the couples’ home inNorton Square.

He says two fire engines, one water tank-er, one rescue vehicle and 14 firefighterswere deployed and the firewas extinguishedby noon.

“The firewas started by an electrical shortcircuit and therewas someminor structuraldamage to the house caused by the smokeand water,” he says.

Layne said the couple were treated for mi-nor smoke inhalation and were not injured.

According to a post of the ParklandsNeighbourhood Watch (PNW) Facebookpage, they are assisting the couple with get-ting back on their feet.

It states following several requests fromresidentswhowould like to assist, they havespoken to the couples’ daughter andall dona-tions are to be given to watchmember ErikaLemos.

The couple are in need of various items in-cluding clothing, food, dog food, toiletries,linen and household appliances among oth-ers.

Motorists travelling past the Blaauw-berg Nature Reserve are asked to bevigilant following the death of sever-

al animals.According to the City of Cape Town, Cape

grysbok, caracals, Cape cobras and porcupi-nes are some of the animals being killed bymotorists speeding along roads near naturereserves.

Nocturnal animals are particularly vul-nerable. “The City is calling on motoriststo be vigilant and to slow down when driv-ing in these vicinities, especially at night,as animals often cross the roads unexpect-edly. Recently a number of animals havebeen killed on Otto du Plessis Drive and theR27 near the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve,”states the City.

Two­fold challengeAccording to their statement, a caracal

and Cape grysbok were killed on the roadbetween Bloubergstrand and Melkboss-trand, near the Blaauwberg Nature Reserverecently. Other animals that have beenkilled over the last year include tortoises,Cape cobras, mole snakes, small-spottedgenets and porcupines. In most cases, ani-mals are hesitant to cross roads because itis a foreign environment to them so theywill often do so suddenly and unexpectedly.

Mayco member for energy, environmen-tal and spatial planning, Johan van derMerwe, says the challenge is two-fold.

He says many motorists are not awarethey are driving through proclaimed na-ture reserve areas, while at the same time

many of the animals are nocturnal so itmakes it difficult for motorists to see themat night when they unexpectedly cross theroads searching for food.

Responsibility“Capetonians are fortunate to share this

city with a range of unique plants and ani-mals, many of which are found nowhereelse in the world. We have a responsibilityto ensure we conserve and protect our bio-diversity. For example, the Blaauwberg Na-ture Reserve alone is home to at least 47threatened plants and conserves 624 plantspecies, 40 mammal species, 166 types ofbirds, 30 species of reptile and four amphibi-an species, including the dwarf burrowingskink. The loss of a single animal can havea significant impact on the environment,”he says.

Van der Merwe further explains the re-serve forms part of the southern area of theCape West Coast Biosphere Reserve and islocated on the West Coast, about 25km fromthe city centre, between Bloubergstrandand Melkbosstrand, and inland from theR27.

“The reserve is dissected by two busyroads, namely Otto du Plessis Drive and theR27. The launch of Why did you take so longcomes shortly after Samantha and CallaHenn’s return from Johannesburg to attendthe SAMRO Wawela Music Awards wherethey were nominated alongside Blackbyrdand Mccully Workshop in the best South Af-rican duo/group category.Not bad for a group who have only been

producing original music since last year.Calla is one of four children and grew up

in a musical family. He performed with vari-ous original bands beforemeeting Samaboutfour years ago.Sam’s love affair with music started when

she took piano lessons in high school, but lifegot in thewayand she grewupand foundher-self with a day job.She was 23 when shemet Calla and the two

used to sing together at braais until he con-vinced her to join him on stage. She says theidea of being on stage with “all those people”looking at her was scary, but soon she wasworking through the day and singing atnight, until one day, she decided to focus onmusic.“I left my job and I haven’t been back

since.” That was three year ago, when Samand Call were known as Public Holiday.Within their first year together they won

a local battle of thebands competitionandgota contract to perform at a top hotel in Dubai.When they returned in June last year, they

decided it was time to focus on original mu-sic.

“I think it’s every musician’s dream to gettheir own music out there,” Sam says.They have since completed their album,

Nowonder they did not want toengage with the residents.Additionally, the site is not

suitable for the control offireworks. In order to limit thefireworks to a prescribed areathe City requires 80-100 person-nel on duty, which they do nothave. At Guy Fawkes they usedthe services of over 60 Neigh-bourhood Watch members.However NHW have no autho-rity to control such events andare volunteers – why shouldthey give up hours of theirfamily time at New Year to trycontrol an event that is reallythe City’s responsibility? Thiswas clearly demonstrated atNew Year when the wholebeachfront was a chaos ofuncontrolled fireworks from19:00 to 02:00. Furthermore, noregard seems to be given topollution. The fireworks debrisis subject to wind and waveaction for hours before thecleaning crews arrive, bywhich time a large percentagehas polluted our ocean anddunes. Why does the City notlook for sites which can bemore easily controlled and arefurther away from residences,like Eerste Steen perhaps? Orwhat was wrong with TheoMarais? According to the sameCity document which citesrequirements for a fireworkssite, Theo Marais is notsuitable because of complaintsby the public! Really? Danny Abrahams, remembered as oneof the best footballers in the countryduring the 1970s,will be sorelymissed.

He passed away in Ruyterwacht two weeksago at the age of 63.His career began in Elsies River at the lo-

cal St Augustine’s Club.It soon became apparent that he was des-

tined for greater things.As a player he will be remembered as a

genius who was born with the ability tostamp his authority on matches.With Cape Town Spurs he enthralled

crowds and itwas no surprisewhen he won the FederationPlayer of the Year Award in1973.“My dad was a very loving

and humble man. He caredmore about other people thanabout himself,” says his son,Dean Abrahams.Long-time friend Ivan Jack

aso has fond memories.“Danny was born to play, he had flair.

We will fondly remember Danny, also forthe great family man and friend he was offthe pitch,” says Ivan.

Ivan recalls the time when therewere serious talks of him going toplay for Crystal Palace to further hiscareer.“But then his grandma fell ill and

he decided to rather take care of her.“He decided family was more im-

portant than stardom,” says Ivan.Danny’s friends and former play-

ers started the Danny Abrahams Ex-Footballers Fund to help those in need.“Dannywas the start of the fund, but we try

andhelp asmany old soccer players financial-ly as we can.“The fund will continue to grow in honour

of Danny and we will continue to help ourfriendswho are struggling financially,” saidJack.There will be a memorial service today
