HEALTH: NEWBORNS GIVEN VACCINATION FROM THE WRONG VIAL

Baby injected with TBMAGRIET THERON

@magrietron

On 21 January a perfect baby girl wasborn at Milnerton Medi Clinic, buttwo weeks later her parents received

a call from the clinic to ask that they comein for an urgent discussion about her TB vac-cination.

Like every other newborn, Jordan Lee Ka-gan was supposed to receive the standardBCG vaccination at the age of two days. Butinstead she was injected with a 40 timesmore potent BCG culture from a vial thatwas supposed to go to theatre for the treat-ment of TB of the bladder. Jordan’s parents,

Dean and Melanie are now consultingwith ProfMarkCotton, head of paedia-tric infectious diseases at TygerbergChildren’s hospital.According to Cotton, it is unlikely

that something serious will come ofthis error, “but if one has an underly-ing abnormality, it could be dange-rous,” he says.He told TygerBurger that the TB tre-

atment for three to six months will bemore than adequate for these babies.“The doctors are being cautious, it

is the right decision. There is a verygood team looking after the children, the paediatricians are following them. But the problem is, because it was anerror, it is very stress provoking for fa-milies and the parents are very anxi-ous,” he says.“Onehas to be vigilant in case of pro-

blems, hence they must be on themeds. Some of the babies had a severelocal reactionwhich one could see, butthat is not a major concern.”According to Mediclinic Southern

Africa, “the errors causing the inci-dent have been identified and recti-fied”.In a press release they say their top

priority is to ensure the health and sa-fety of the babies.“In this regard we have contacted

the manufacturers of the medication,a toxicologist and a paediatrician spe-cialised in infectious diseases in orderto determine what needed to be done.“All the parents of the babies invol-

ved were contacted and they have con-sulted their paediatricians. None ofthe babies have had serious side ef-fects and they are being monitored bytheir paediatricians.“Mediclinic regrets this incident

and has formally apologised to everyo-ne affected,” they stated.

There’s no way to prove her water meter“went berserk”, leaving a Bellville residentwith an exceptionally pricey water bill. Sonow she wishes to warn others about whatshe believes to be a glitch with her meter.Violet Smit from Vredenberg says she

will pay the municipal account for 138KL ofwaterusage, even thoughherhouseholdwa-ter account has never exceeded 38KL permonth.Violet fears her water meter might have

“jumped an extra 100 units at some point”,but trying to prove this is futile, she says.“I had my insurance company come

check for water leakages, which seemed tome the only plausible explanation for thehigh meter reading. They spent two hoursexaminingmyhome’swater pipes but couldfind no leaks,” she says.Violet says what bothers her is that if it

was a fault on her water meter, the Citycharges R1400 to go out and “examine theirown meter!”“It’s not about the amount I’m now indeb-

ted for, but if there’s nothingwrongwithmy

meter, I would like to know why I am liableto have the council’s product evaluated.”Violet’s account was formore than R3300.“In the 18 years I’ve lived at my current

address, mymonthlyusagehasnever excee-ded 38KL. Is this some sort of money-ma-king schemeby theCity?Whyshouldpeoplepay to have their meters checked?” sheasked.“The account wasn’t an estimated meter

reading, the City confirmed it was an actualreading. So if the meter had some technicalfault, why should I be held accountable forsuch an error?”Vredenberg Ward Councillor Brendan

van derMerwe said there is no possiblewayin which a meter can “jump” to excessivereadings.“The meter reading was a true reading of

the meter, found by her own plumber to bereading accurately. Therefore, logic saysthat the water would have been used at thepremises,” Van der Merwe says.“In the event that a meter is reported as

faulty, remembering that end users oftenwhen receiving a high water bill after ha-ving used the water, try to blame the meterin order to avoid payment, the City will

charge a call-out fee,” he says. This fee is fully refundable should theme-

ter be found to be faulty.“The complainant (Violet) refused to use

this option as she had already apparentlyhad her meter tested privately and found itto be fully serviceable and reading accurate-ly.“Water meters are not ‘intelligent’ devi-

ces and are extremely simple in nature, me-asuring the flowofwater through themeter.“They are usually fully reliable. When

they fail, they tend to fail permanently andremain faulty. Therefore, if ameter is faultyit would be easy to identify the fault wheninspected,” he said.He likened the working of a meter to that

of a car’s odometer.“I have never heard of a meter ‘jumping’

before. The dial turns when water flowsthrough the meter, very similar to the acti-on of an odometer on a car, measuring dis-tance.A ‘jump’would be extremelyunlikelyif not impossible.“I have had no other similar complaints

brought to my attention from any house-hold in the area, or in the entire ward forthat matter.”

Flood of queries over water bill

Tree topping proves tobe a tricky issue for CityESMÉ ERASMUS

Major inconvenience for motorists isexpected when a part of RacecourseRoad in Durbanville will be closed

for two-weeks while bluegum (Eucalyptus)trees up to 150 years old will be cut back. The road will be closed from next week

Monday (20 April) to Sunday 3 May from08:30 to 15:30 while the City’s parks depart-ment “tops” 240 large Eucalyptus treesalong the road between St John’s Road andTygervalley Road. The work entails cuttingmajor trunks down to a height of between10 to 15 metres. The trimming of historic bluegum trees

is a sensitive issue in Durbanville. The“hacking” of bluegum trees on the cornerof St John’s and Racecourse Roads in May2011 had residents and conservationists upin arms.Vergesig residents are concerned their

view of the rural landscape will be spoiltand their buffer against wind and trafficnoise will be removed.According to Dr Nico Walters, founding

member of the Durbanville Heritage Socie-ty, this historic avenue of trees inRacecour-se Road dates back 150 years and demarca-tes the oldwagon route betweenCapeTown,Wagenmakersvallei (Wellington), Roode-zand (Tulbagh) and other areas.“It resembles the old Durbanville lane of

bluegum trees fromDurbanville to Bellvillestation (today Durban Road), which wasdestroyed for development,” Walters said. The same section of Racecourse Roadwas

closed for aweek in June last yearwhile thetrees were pruned after several branches

fell on the road, in one incident causingabout R92 000 damage to a car.In another accident, amother had to drive

over a branch in Racecourse Road when itfell in front of her car, causing considerabledamage.A huge bluegum tree also fell across Ty-

gervalley Road, in front of oncoming cars.In November 2012 the City had to cut a la-

ne of bluegumtrees inBowlersAvenueaftera huge tree fell onto the road.George Sieraha, chairperson of the Dur-

banville Community Forum, said “the trim-ming of trees has always been a sensitiveissue”.He said in the past lanes of trees had been

severely cut, causing an outcry from thecommunity.“The tree lanes are part of our heritage

and should be preserved as far as possible.

Safety of the residents is of course of para-mount importance so there will be occasi-ons where trees have to be trimmed. The is-sue is not the trimming, but how it is done.“It is easy to hack a tree, but quite another

thing to leave the tree resplendent and ne-at,” he said.Mayco member for community services

and special projects, Belinda Walker, saidalthough topping of the trees was a drasticmaintenance measure, it was necessary toreduce tree-related risks along the road inthe long term.“Trees are valuable assets and City Parks

takes careful decisions to ensure their sus-tainability. The department undertook aninvestigationwhich included the considera-tion of consultant arborist studies.“Topping (or lopping) appears to be the

best long term maintenance solution.”

These tall, historical bluegum (Eucalyptus) trees along Racecourse Road will be cut down to aheight of between 10 to 15 metres. PHOTO: CARINA ROUX

Alien clearing and litter cleanupswere partof an “eye-opening” experience for JuliaHollander.Julia volunteered to assist the Biodiversi-

ty Management staff at Table Bay NatureReserveatRietvlei duringherDecemberva-cationNow in the second year of her three-year

NatureConservationCourse at CPUT, Juliasaid she always felt strongly about injusticeand as a pupil at Elkanah House she saw AlGore’s movie An Inconvenient Truth. Thismade her aware of the injustice to our plan-et, but also to poor people who suffer the ef-fects of climate change disproportionatelyto their environmental footprint. As a Grade 9 pupil, she’d had her first

hands-on experience of tackling an environ-

mental issue as one of a group of pupils whovolunteering on an Alien Invasive Hack inthe BlaauwbergNature Reserve. Sound likefighting aliens from outer space? No, thesealiens are invasive exotic plants. Notably inthis case, Port Jacksons (Acacia Saligna),introduced from Australia to stabilise thedrifting sands of the Cape Flats.Julia and friends took turns hacking back

the plants and spraying them with an ap-proved herbicide. ‘‘We covered a line ofabout 30 metres, over three hours on a Sat-urday in winter. Very worthwhile!’’Apart from the satisfaction of physically

contributing to conservation, Julia foundthe experience fun. That practically-fo-cussed action morning was sufficient to getJulia volunteering on subsequent occa-

sions, mainly at Table Bay Nature Reserve.Holiday volunteering now over, and back

at her studies, Julia knows that she’s madethe right study course selection.‘‘The time spent at Rietvlei opened my

eyes to how much work there is to do to en-lighten us all to our impact on the environ-ment. We need to recognise that what we doto our environment ultimately impacts us.We tend to take our environment for grant-ed. We forget that we need nature for ourown survival,” she says.V If you’re a high school student or young visitor toCape Town who is interested in the environment, you’re invited to join the first of this season’s alieninvasive hacks in the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve onSaturday 18 April. The department of transport and publicworks has started patching and resurfa-cing trunk road 77 (TR 77) section 1 fromMilnerton to Melkbosstrand. The project is set to be completed early

in 2016.TR 77 carries over 50 000 vehicles per

day, linking the greater Blaauwberg andTable View area with Cape Town CBD.“These improvements would greatly

improve travelling quality and extendthe life of pavement structures to carrythe expected future traffic,” says Byronla Hoe, department spokesperson. The project includes localised repair

work to damaged areas, a new ridingsurface, repair of culverts and drainagestructures, and maintenance and reha-bilitation of the Diep River bridges. To accommodate traffic, lane merging

will only be implemented along the dualcarriageway section between the inter-sections of Racecourse Road and Sand-own/Tryall Roads with TR77.The two lanes (on either the north-or

southbound carriageways) will be mer-ged into one lane.Work will commence on the

northbound carriageway at the Race-course Road intersection.Workwill start on the southbound car-

riageway once work on the northboundcarriageway up to the Sandown/TryallRoad intersection has been completed.According to La Hoe, lane mergers

will be restricted to non-peak hours oneach carriageway.Due to theMyCiTi bus operation sche-

dules, intersections may only be closedfor construction over weekends.

Ao.

Apolice officerwho allegedly tried to commit suicideon Monday by driving into oncoming traffic on theN1 from Durban Road, is still in hospital. This was confirmed by provincial police spoke-

sperson Captain Frederick vanWyk, who said the of-ficer was off duty at the time. However, he could not say which police station the

officer was from.“According to our knowledge, the accident happe-

ned around 13:50. Two charges of attempted murderhave been brought against the officer,” Van Wyksaid.Traffic spokesperson Maxine Jordaan explained

the entire incident: “It is alleged that a policemanwas travelling along Durban Road. Instead of takingthe onramp onto the N1 towards Cape Town, the offi-cer is said to have taken the Durban Road entrywayinstead of the outbound lane – directly into oncomingtraffic – where he collided with a truck,” she said.“The incident happened just before 14:00 and it is

alleged the policeman was in some sort of distress,”she said.Jordaan confirmed that the officer survived the ac-

cident and went on the run immediately.“He climbed out of the vehicle and tried to run

away, but the police had been notified and officerswere able to apprehend him.”The truck driver sustained no injuries, she confir-

med.The accident caused heavy delays, with the scene

only being cleared completely after 18:30 onMonday.“People were stopping to check what was going

on,” Jordaan said.

Chilly waters greet Freedom Swim

Swimmers competing inthe Freedom Swim.

The 14th annual Freedom Swim took placethis past weekend and the water was so coldthat first-time swimmers were divided intorelay teams.Thehighest temperature acrossthe bay on Saturdaymorningwas 12 degreesCelsius, with an average temperature under11 degrees. While a Robben Island crossing can be at-

tempted by swimmers any time during theyear, the Freedom Swim is the only racefrom Robben Island to the main land. This year saw over 100 swimmers starting

the swim from Robben Island to Big Bay, 26wearing just a bathing suit and a swim cap,14 swimmers in wetsuits and 42 relay teams.Fifteen international swimmers from the

UK, USA, Belgium, Denmark, France andIreland all competed and finished the race. The swimmers were greeted with a thick

fog bank which forced a delayed start, but

by 11:00 it had cleared into a gorgeous dayfor the chilly race.Nicolas Manoussakis won the race in his

first crossing with an amazing time of01:31:42, with defending champion RudolfVisser in a close secondwith 01:35:09 andAn-ton Botha rounding up the third position in01:46:47.The women’s race was even more hotly

contested with newcomer Shannon Austintaking the gold in 01:51:51, followed closelyby defending champion Emma Alsop in01:52:46. Taking the third spot was UrsulaRencken in 03:21:39.According toKimGermishuys, marketing

coordinator atBigBayEvents, oneof thebig-gest challenges swimmers face is that ofwarding off hypothermia. “Water tempera-tures between the island and the main landvary quite a bit, with a yearly average of

around 13/14 degrees Celsius. Luckily mostswimmers have grown acclimatised to thetemperatures with regular ocean trainingsessions and during the Freedom Swim, swimmers are supported by safety boats anda medical team at the finish to ensure a safeevent for all.”The Freedom Swim is not just a swim, it

is also an important event which raisesfunds for numerous charities, such asFriends of Vista Nova, Splash and Make aDifference and the SEAL OpenWater Swim-ming Trust.Formore information visit www.freedom-

swimseries.co.za or contact Kim on 060 3928746.

I am a typical 50-somethingSouth African woman whoknows very little about carsand how to fix them! I was onholiday in Langebaan twoweeks with my wife and twodogs. We have a Ford Bantambakkie and on our last day ofholiday, when we let thetailgate down, the whole gatefell off and the screws andmechanism fell out. Luckily wewere able to secure the tailgatefor our journey home but Iobviously wanted to fix thisproblem asap as we use thebakkie every day to take ourdogs to the beach for their run.I was at a loss as to who I

should contact to repair thisand repair it at a reasonablerate. I popped in to a Tyre andExhaust shop and they sugge-sted that I take the bakkie toTableview Coachworx which Idid.I was met by a lovely

receptionist, I explained theproblem and asked for advice. She offered me a coffee andwent back into the workshop. Icould see they were very busyand did not really expect muchhelp. One of the businesspartners came to the receptionarea, greeted me and I tookhim out to my bakkie andshowed him what the problemwas and asked where I couldalso get another Ford badge

which had been stolen weeksbefore. He asked me to drivethe bakkie into the workshopand said they would look at it. Iwent back and waited in thereception area. Not ten minutes later he

came out and said the tailgatewas sorted and they managed tofind a spare Ford badge. I wasso grateful and asked howmuch I owed them. The answerI got was a huge surprise andrestored my faith in human-kind. He said I owed nothingand it was a pleasure to helpout. Wow, after having beenripped off at exhaust places andin other purchases in the past, this was amazing.Thank you to all at Tableview

As a matter of concern, and ageneral warning to homeowners and keen gardeners Iwrite this letter. I purchasedtwo, black wattle lattice framesfrom a vendor along the road inFairtrees way Durbanville, andinstalled these lattice framesinto my garden up against thevibracrete wall.Just recently I noticed a

white wood powder lying inlittle heaps at the base of thestructures on the cementpaving. On closer inspection Inoticed tiny holes in the blackwattle wood lattice which is aclear indication of wood beetle. Is this something to be

worried about? Will this beetlespread to the plants and treesin the garden? Should I removethe black wattle lattice promp-tly or just spray with appropria-te wood beetle killer?

I agree with the other readersthat pets must be kept in theirown yards.I live in a complex in West

Beach. Although the gardensare very small and mostlypaved, there are more dogs andcats than people in the complex. The constant barking of somedogs for no reason drives mecrazy, and I find it strange itdoes not bother the owners. Itis cruel to keep dogs in suchsmall spaces, especially biggerbreeds and some of these peoplehave more than one.I love gardening, but the

neighbours cats use my flowerbeds and pots as their toilet andmy front door mat to groomtheir nails. I have tried diffe-rent repellents, pepper, chillies, thorns and wire mesh withoutany success. I think I shouldcollect all the crap and place itin their post boxes or maybe apellet gun will be a betteroption.

Glimlag endie wêreldglimlag saamDie woord “glimlag” word in die Verkla-rende Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaan-se Taal beskryf as: “’n Uitdrukking opdie gelaat soos dié by ’n lag, maar sonderdat die laggeluid daarmee saamgaan.”Dit verg dus omtrent geen inspanning

om te glimlag nie. Jy trek net jou mondin ’n vrolike halfmaan. Dis kos ook nie ’nsent nie.So waarom is dit dan so moeilik vir

Sommige jare se seëls het baiekeermeer waarde as ander jare s’n. Skaars-heid speel ook ’n groot rol,” sê hy.

Walkers waddle tosupport penguinsThe fifth annual Penguin Promises

Waddle for a Week started on Monday(13 April) and ends on Saturday.

The group of Waddlers started in Gans-baai and are walking to Simon’s Town, while raising much needed awarenessabout the plight of the endangered Africanpenguin. The group of 16 tackling the 120kmwalk, consists of animal keepers fromaround the country as well as other animalenthusiasts and environmental supporters.

The endangered African penguin is onlyfound along the SouthernAfrican coastline.Theyoccurnowhere else in theworld.Theirdistribution stretches from Namibia in thewest, to Algoa Bay in the east. These enig-matic birds face extinction in the wild astheir numbers continue to decline dramati-cally. Loss of food source due to overfishing, climate change and habitat destruction arejust some of the factors taking their toll.

Behavioural changeThe Penguin PromisesWaddle for aWeek

was started in 2011 as an AKAA (AnimalKeepers Association of Africa) initiativethat encourages people to make a behav-ioural change and through that, make a pos-itive impact on the environment. The initia-tive has grown year on year and incorpo-rates Waddlers from around the country.

How can readers help the African pen-guin and the Waddlers? It is quite easy tobecome involved. By simply making apromise to make a change in their dailylives, readers can positively effect change

in the environment. These promises arefunneled through the Penguin Promisescampaign and need to be submitted to [email protected]

Simple promisePromises should be kept simple and do-

able. So, why not make an environmentalpromise to stop using plastic bags andstraws? Or how about swapping your waterguzzling bath for a quick shower? Otherpromises include eating only sustainablysourced seafood, planting indigenousplants inyour garden, adhering to thewaterby-laws and teaching others about the Pen-guin Promises campaign and the plight ofthe African penguin. These changes canhave an immense positive impact on the en-vironmentwhen theyaremadecollectively. The Waddle for a Week and the PenguinPromises campaign are not fundraisers, in-stead they aim to facilitate long-termbehav-ior change.

On the final day of the Waddle on Satur-day, the groupwill depart fromMuizenbergand will walk to Simon’s Town. On this leg, theywould love to see asmanyCapetoniansand visitors as possible join them. Dress inblack and white and show your love andsupport of the African penguin.

Leaving Muizenberg (Surfer’s Corner) at09:00,walkers expect to reachSimon’sTownat approximately 13:00.

The TwoOceans Aquarium asks the publicto be on the lookout for sea turtle stran-dings.

Between April and June each year, anumber of juvenile loggerhead turtleswash up on Cape Town beaches.

This year, rough seas and strong windshave contributed to sea turtle strandings.Since mid-March, the Two Oceans Aquari-um has already received 20 small turtlesfromas far afield asKnysnaandStruisbaai, for rehabilitation. “We are calling on Cape-tonians to keep an eye open for these littlesea turtles and to contact the Aquarium ifthey happen to find one,” says spokesper-son Renée Leeuwner.

She says this only applies to marine turt-le strandings around theWestern Cape. Allother turtles found around the South Afri-can coast must be reported to the localaquarium or animal rehabilitation centre.

Sea turtles are temperate water animalsand when washed up onWestern Cape bea-ches are often suffering from hypothermia, dehydration and possible infection. TheTwo Oceans Aquarium rehabilitates theturtles and once they are strong and heal-thy enough, they are sent to uShaka SeaWorldwhere theyare released into thewar-mer waters off the Kwa-Zulu Natal coast.V If you find a turtle on a Western Cape beach, re-move it from the beach and keep it in a containerwith ample air holes at room temperature. Do notput it in water and contact the Aquarium on 021418 3823.

Invasive plants in the City of Cape Townwill now be destroyed by their naturalenemies. Some 80 000 bugs reared by the Invasive

Species Unit’s Insect Mass Rearing Facili-ty will soon be released city wide to curbinvasive plants.

“I am incredibly pleased with the grow-ing success of this initiative which hasmade use of innovative approaches to cre-ate a more sustainable future. Pro-grammes tomitigate against the ecologicaland other damage believed to be caused byinvasive plants, which can spread aggres-sively, are an important facet of amore sus-tainable tomorrow. This exciting facility, which offers inclusive job creation for peo-ple with special needs, has been focusingon insects to control prickly pear and dev-astating infestations of invasive aquaticweeds, such as water lettuce, parrot’sfeather, water hyacinth and Kariba weed, which are considered the worst weeds inSouth Africa,” said the City’s mayco mem-ber for energy, environmental and spatialplanning, Johan van der Merwe.

Biological controlTo date, five employees have reared over

80 000 insects, which have been releasedsince operations begun at the facility.

Awell-knownbiocontrol agent, the coch-ineal insect was reared and later releasedon the invasive drooping prickly pear(Opuntia monacantha), with much suc-cess, says Van der Merwe.

The plant on which the insect was re-leased was destroyed within six months.

This scale insect from the dactylopiidaefamily is used widely across the dry East-ern and Northern Cape to control pricklypear (Opuntia spp.) invasions on farms.

The cochineal insect thrives on themois-ture and nutrients of prickly pear.

“Treating prickly pear with cochinealbiocontrol is a vastly superior method to

removing the plantmanually, which is dif-ficult and dangerous for City workers asit has many thorns. Another problemwiththemanual removal of prickly pears is thatbits of the plant, especially the cladode, will drop to the ground and grow. The riskof unintended introduction of prickly pearplants is eliminatedwhen using the biolog-ical control cochineal insect,” he said.

University inputThe Cape Town Biological Control Pro-

gramme is a partnership between the De-partment of Environmental Affairs andRhodes University’s Department of Ento-mology, led by Professor Martin Hill.

Rhodes University is an internationalleader in the field of biological control andguides the City on rearing and releasinginsects to control selected invasive plants.

Last year, the City’s biological controlteam was trained by experts from RhodesUniversity.

“Biological control is increasingly be-coming a cost-effective method of controlin the war against infestations of invasiveplants,” he adds.

The City’s Invasive Species Unit plans toincrease the awareness of the applicationof biological control by working withschools.

“Theaim is to show learnershowbiocon-trol insects are reared for release, therebycreating awareness about this excitingpart of invasive plant management.

The school outreach programmes willnot only raise awareness, but will also pro-vide learners with the opportunity to seefirst-hand how these highly specialised in-sects are reared,” he says.

Riana sal op Saterdag 18 April by Vrede-lust-gemeente in 13de Laan 87, Boston optree.

My hart is diep dankbaar.”Riana hetDie regte tyd omtrent ’n jaar gele-

“My pa is gebore op Laingsburg, so dit voelsoos my mense op ’n manier.”

haar vorige treffers Saterdag by Vredelust segemeente sing.

FIGURE SKATING: LOCAL LAD EYES WINTER OLYMPICS

Skater cuts fine figure

Matthew Samuels at The Ice Station inGoodwood. PHOTO: BEN BURGER

BEN BURGER

A young man with his eye on the 2018Winter Olympics in South Korea willdefend his first place in the Junior

Men’s (16 - 19) division at the South AfricanNational Figure Skating Championship inMay.

Matthew Samuels (17) from Summer-greens in Milnerton is the current WesternProvince champion.

The South African National Figure Ska-ting Championship will take place from 10to 13 May at The Ice Station at GrandWestCasino and Entertainment World.

Wonderful movesMatthew started skating about nine years

ago.“At first I wanted to play ice hockey, but

when I saw the figure skaters doing wonder-

ful moves on the ice, I knew I also wantedto be a figure skater,” he says.

Matthewpractises 10 hours aweek, on andoff the ice, and also goes to gym three timesa week to keep fit.

“I amon the ice from05:30 to 07:00 and thenagain for an hour after school,” he says. “Itis hard work, but it pays off.”

Last year he represented South Africa inhis first Junior Grand Prix in Germany, where he placed 25th overall. This year hewill be participating in two more JuniorGrand Prixs where he hopes to better hisscores and placing.

According to his mother, Suzette, a high-light in his career thus far was winning theISU World Development Trophy in the Phi-lippines in 2013. “This was a momentous mi-lestone for our family as both Matthew andhis sister Abigail came back with gold me-dals that year.”

At the South African National Figure Ska-ting Championship Matthew will be rankedfirst in his age group, but he needs to be athis best to keep the first spot.

Choice of countries“At the champs we will be ranked again

and the first ranked skater has the choice offour foreign countries where he wants tocompete, so that is a big competition to win.”

He is being coached by Oula Jaaskelainen,Vage Evetts and Susan Marais.

Matthew says his big dream is to take partin at least the next two winter Olympic Ga-mes: in 2018 in South Korea and in 2022 ineither Almaty, Kazakhstan or Beijing, Chi-na, (the host city is still to be determined).

“My coaches say that I am half way there, and I would really love to represent SouthAfrica at the Olympics,” he says, with starsin his eyes.

BEN BURGER

If you have heard about the Stanley Cup andteams like the New York Rangers, TorontoMaple Leafs, Anaheim Ducks, EdmontonOilers andVancouverCanucks, thenyouarean ice hockey fan and this week, Monday 13to Sunday 19 April will be an important onefor you.

This is when the International Ice HockeyFederation’s (IIHF) IceHockeyWorld Cham-pionship (Divison II Group B) takes place atThe Ice Station at GrandWest Casino andEntertainment World.

South Africa is the host nation and willcompete against Bulgaria, China, Israel,Mexico and New Zealand.

“The Ice Station has the only Olympic size

ice rink in Africa, which makes us stand outfrom the rest and we are very proud to hostthe World Championship,” says Jayson Al-cock, Ice Station spokesperson.

“We invite everyone in and around CapeTown to come and see world class competi-tive ice hockey, right here in our own back-yard. Especially if you have never seen anice hockey game live and even more so if you

do not really understand the sport. Now isyour opportunity to learn more about thegame,” he said.
