Herron reiterated that the usage of one My- Connect card by more than one commuter is not allowed. “The reasoning behind the one-card-per- passenger ruling is that in the second half of the year we will be changing the structure of the tariffs charged for the buses, moving to a much fairer, distance-based fee struc- ture. When we introduce this fare structure customers will be required to tap into the system and tap out when the leave the sys- tem. According to the distance they have travelled the correct fare will be calculated and will then be deducted from the card. This then makes tapping in for more than one person impossible as the whole system will change from a fixed fare to a distance related fare,” he explained. The first time the card is tapped is for boarding the bus, and, as far as the system is concerned the second tap would be for de- parting the system. Therefore the second tap cannot occur immediately after the first tap, nor at the same point where the first tap oc- curred. Herron said the distance related fare will benefit customers as they are only charged based on the distance travelled. “We do not want people to get into the habit of sharing cards as, when we change over to the new system it would require them to have to make another adjustment and change their habits.” Herron also stressed that the initial R22 cost of the card is heavily subsidised. “Unfortunately the city could not carry the full cost of the card. If we tried this approach it would force an increase elsewhere to cover the cost to the city, such as an increase in rates,” he said. A father from Table View is outraged af-ter his son and a friend were physicallyremoved from a MyCiTi bus after makinguse of the same pay card.

ColinClarke sayshe is struggling tounder-stand why each separate passenger has tohave their own MyCiTi card.

Surely if there is money on the card it canbe used for more than one passenger or isthis just a way for Absa to make money, heasks. Is MyCiTi making money from thefares or the cards?

Clarke says his 16-year-old son and his fe-male friend were removed from a MyCiTibus recently by the driver using physicalforce.

Unfortunately my son did not get the driv-ers name. If he had I would have laid an as-sault charge against him.

The three public participation meetingsregarding the proposed new landfill sitesalong the West Coast were held last week.

The meetings formed part of a supplemen-tary Environmental Impact Report (EIR) re-quested by provincial minister of environ-mental affairs and development AntonBredell.

Bredell will have to decide where the newregional landfill site will be located afterscrutinising all relevant documentation.

The two sites on the shortlist are the farmBrakkefontein close to Atlantis and Kalbask-raal near Philadelphia.

Questions and comments aired at thesemeetings will be incorporated in the finalsupplementary EIR.

Written comments by other interested andaffected parties can still be lodged by 17April.

Melkbosstrand resident WillemSteenkamp has been very vocal in the cam-paign against the site being located atBrakkefontein.

Steenkamp has also questioned why CCEnvironmental, who was responsible for theinitial environmental impact study was usedto compile the secondary report.

He questioned the findings in the initial re-port and asked the minister and City of Cape

Town to launch an internal audit into theprocedures and findings.

According to Shehaam Sims, mayoralcommittee member for utility services, thecity did investigate the allegations bySteenkamp.

The allegations were never substantiatedand the city found nothing during the courseof its investigations to support any of the al-legations made, Sims said.

She added that the minister indicated ina letter to Steenkamp dated 25 July 2011 theallegations and the citys and CCAs repre-sentations in response were considered andthat it was decided not to remove CCA as theenvironmental consultant.

Sims says former Cape Town mayor HelenZille commissioned an independent reviewof the initialEIAprocess bySRK, anenviron-mental consultancy.

It found the initial EIA was entirely legal-ly compliant, including its public participa-tion process. In addition, the then minister,Tasneem Essop, commissioned Peter Kan-tor, an independent environmental lawyer,to assist her in making a decision on appeal.

Kantor reviewed the assessment andfound it to be legally compliant.

Because the city had found nothing tosuggest the initial EIA was flawed and be-cause two independent reviews reached thesame conclusion, it was decided to appointthe same consultant, Sims explained.

If Kathy Olivier from Monte Vista is correct, then Shadow the Ancient Pavement Specialis the 17th oldest dog ever!

According to her, her four-legged compan-ion will be celebrating her 21st birthday inSeptember this year.

Unfortunately, there is no concrete way ofguessing Shadows age, since Kathy adoptedher when her previous owner moved awayin 2001.

She was then told that Shadow was 10years old, which she confirmed with thevet.

Just by looking at the sprightly Shadow, this estimate seems far-off.

If this grey-haired, wet-nosed canine is in-deed 140 dog years old, then there is definite-ly something invigorating in Monte Vistaswater or in Kathys cooking.

She eats chicken, mince, brown rice anda lot of veggies all mixed together! ex-claims her conscientious owner.

In September 2001 Kathys carpets startedcollecting Shadows hairs when the maltese/yorkie cross was given to her by an acquaint-ance.

With Shadows birthday coming up,Kathy plans to treat her with a little bit of

biltong and drowors.Shadows favourite pastimes are sleeping

in the car and sleeping in the house, but thedog apparently demands a little daily exer-cise.

I must walk her every single day! We usedto walk far, but now its just around theblock, which she likes.

Shadow would nod in unison if she wasntdeaf.

Shes the sweetest thing out! I love her tobits! She sleeps most of the time and, talkabout Shadow, she is one. She follows mewherever I go.

The non-profit organisation Womenand Beyond, based in Table View, will be having a conference entitledNo Shame at the Lagoon Beach Hotelon Saturday 7 April.

The aim of the conference is to cre-ate awareness of abuse of women andchildren.

We need to get the message acrossthat women need to report cases ofrape, says Ethol Swaraplhe-Tlhap-ane, the founder of Women and Be-yond.

We find that many women refuseto report the case because they thinknothing will happen to the perpetra-tors, or it is someone they trustedwho has committed the crime. Withthis conference we want to encour-age people to report all rape cases asit does make a difference and theyhave nothing to be ashamed over.

Women and Beyond has been in ex-istence for five years helping womenaged 18 and older who have beenraped; helping them with ways tocope with it and also live better lives.

As an NPO we know and under-stand that when we empower a wom-an we build a nation, says Swarapl-he-Tlhapane.

The primary goal is to educate, empower, care and support womenand children who have been in anabusive situation. With just smallgroups we have around the country, women are able to stand in the gapfor one another and to raise aware-ness in their communities abouthealth, social, safety and generalcare issues.

The NPO is about to open a safehouse in Table View where womencan have the protection they mayneed.

The safe house is looking to assistthe women who reside in Milnerton.

We want the women to have a safeplace they can go to, she says.

Often women come to us and thenwe need to take them to police sta-tions and hospitals and this is frus-trating to them because they have toanswer the same questions over andover. With this safe house the womenwould have to answer the questionsonce.

The conference will take placefrom 10:00 until 12:00 and all womenare invited. There are 50 seats availa-ble and interested people need toRSVP by tomorrow.

    Email [email protected], or contact Swaraplhe-Tlhapane on 076 555 8044 or visitwww.womenandbeyond.org.za.

A dangerous intersection in Milnertonhas left some residents asking the ques-tion: how long before a tragedy happens?

TygerBurger last year reported on theproblems with the Kei road and Otto du Ples-sis drive intersection (Intersection ques-tioned, 4 May 2011).

Drivers who exit the Esplanade neighbour-hood (adjacent to the Milnerton Lagoon) viaKei Road and want to turn right into Otto duPlessis Drive towards the CBD have to nego-tiate their way across seven lanes of trafficmoving in two different directions.

It is an unbelievably dangerous situa-tion, says Gerhard Beukes a resident of theEsplanade neighbourhood, who regularlymakes use of the Kei Road exit.

As you approach the stop street at Otto duPlessis Drive, there are two boundary wallseither side of you. This forces you to edge thenose of your car into the bicycle lanes. Theselanes have a yield sign, but if you are a cy-clist, clicked into your pedals and travellingat about 30km/h, the last thing you want todo is stop, says Beukes who also cycles.

Once a motorist has managed to evade thecyclists, the two lanes of oncoming trafficand the bus coming from town, you are moreoften than not stuck in the middle of the in-tersection.

To your right there is a bend in the road

which makes it difficult to see the cars com-ing from the north, if you then have a MyCiTibus bearing down on you it becomes evenmore hair-raising, Beukes says. He addsthat although the buses yield to cars in thissituation, it makes it even more difficult tosee approaching traffic to time your entry in-to Otto du Plessis Drive.

Beukes was instrumental in the initialplanning stages of the IRT system.

We decided to close off the gap in the mid-dle of the road so that vehicles would haveto turn left in Otto du Plessis. They wouldthen be allowed to make a u-turn at theLoxton Road traffic lights and turn back totravel to town.

Other residents of Esplanade howevercomplained so much about this proposal thatthe city opted to not close the island.

The only option of making this intersec-tion safer is putting up a traffic light.

This is however a secondary road and thecity says the volume of traffic does not justifya traffic light at this intersection.

Beukes proposes a solid white line in thelanes coming from town as well as speed cam-eras.

It is unbelievable at what speed the carscome racing down down off the bridge. Itspedal to the metal. Often you think there isa gap to join the traffic and then one driverdecides to swap lanes at the last minute.

I am very surprised that there have notbeen any accidents here, he said.

Bad accident justa matter of time

When my brother brought home his first petrat, to shrieks of disgust from my mother andme, I would never have guessed that I wassoon to fall in love.

But as my familys rat collection hasgrown, I have also got sucked into the ratrace at home.

Today is World Rat Day, a day aimed atpromoting fancy rats as the wonderful petsthey are.

I really think the poor little critters havehad a bad rep for far too long.Sure, you are never going to catchme anywhere near a sewer rat, orthose ones in Long Street thatcould give Splinter from the NinjaTurtles a run for his money, butfancy rats are a different story alltogether.

With so many different breeds, which distinguish rats in bodytype, coat type and colours, therereally could be a rat out there foreveryone.

But before I start sounding likea sales pitch, let me tell you how I fell in lovewith my little geniuses.

Like most pets, every rat has its own per-sonality. I could watch our family of rats forhours, finding new quirks every time.

Luna, for instance, one of the girls, hatesflies and will always cover her food withwhatever she can find, when she isnt busyeating.

The two youngest boys, Dexter and Jethro, are just like, well, boys really. They play-fight and love playing in cold water when itshot.

Oscar, one of the older boys, loves to swim.In fact, he loves water in general, while Blu,

my brothers first rat, goes crazy any timeshe gets wet.

The mighty Clarke, my rat, prefers thecompany of rats over humans and really justwants to love.

They each have foods they prefer and Ihave watched them sift through their food, looking for their favourites.

I have even heard stories of rats that recog-nise theme tunes from TV programmes andthen sit still to watch with their owners.

While rats make perfect pets, they need a lot of attention, which is why it is best to keepthem in pairs, although it isstrongly advised that femalesand males should not be kept to-gether.

It is also important to find outas much as possible about caringfor your rats before you go outand get your first critter.

There are a host of local busi-nesses that offer lots of informa-tion for first-time rat owners and

    rat enthusiasts.The site www.ratanooga.co.za, is a South

African Rat Club which aims at educatingabout the proper care for pet rats. Amongother facets of rat care, they look at nutri-tion, bedding and cage specifications and ex-ercise requirements.

And because a big portion of society thinkswe are nuts, the site also offers a forumwhere we can gush about our new bestfriend, discuss rat related topics or look foradvice.

Many people live in smaller homes, or arenot allowed to keep dogs rats make a per-fect, lovable alternative.

Rats. Now youll sayIm completely nutsCERRIN HENDRICKS

Thats mulch better: Melkbos Rotary Club aided by the Rotary Club of KetchikanAlaska recently presented a mulcher/mower and irrigation equipment to Camphill Village West Coast. The equipment will enable the farm to increase its production of feedfor their herd of Friesian cows. This will hopefully help to increase the milk yield fromwhich Camphill Village produce yogurt which is sold to help sustain the village. Picturedhere are (from left) Peter Wood, Sue Wood, Teresa Thomson, Angela MusprattWilliams(Rotary president), Jonathan Farmer (farm manager), Josie Norfolk, Lee Hanson (Camphill Village fundraiser), Gail Oberholzer, Steve du Toit, Denise Lamprecht, (front) AndrewThomson and Yoda.

A margin of a mere two percent iswhat prevented the team of the 1stBlaauwberg Sea Scouts from tast-ing victory in this years Kontiki2012 event.

The event which is held annuallyat Zandvlei in Lakeside over theweekend of 17 March saw 25 teamscompete for honours. It has beenrunning since 1978.

The competition entails scoutshaving to build their own raft and

live on it for a weekend, while per-forming scouting skills tests. Thesetests include model building, cook-ing and knowledge tests such asMorse code. The whole troop at-tends and takes part in the initialconstruction of the raft. Once theraft is launched, six scouts have tostay on board for the remainder ofthe weekend. The scouts who stayon land participate in team activi-ties such as tug-of-war, knee board-

ing, volleyball and model building. The scouts had a good time and

enjoyed pitting their skills againstthe other troops. The troop that gotone up on the local scouts was thatof 1st Bergvliet.. The 1st Blaauwberg Sea Scouts

Your views on the petrol price hikeWith the petrol price going up by 71c today,TygerBurger asked communitymemberswhat they think about the latestprice hike.

Sharika Steyn saidthe problem lieswith the fact thateven though pricesare going up,salaries remain thesame. Oursalaries arentgoing up, buteverything else is.Its unreasonablethat there is noreal balance.

    Photos: Crrin Hendricks

James Du Toit said prices on food and otheritems go up, but whenpetrol goes down, they stay the same. The petrol pricekeeps going up, whichmakes products fromthe shop more expensive. When the petrolgoes down, the itemsremain the same price, but I still do notearn more.

Karen Helberg said her job is affected directly by the price increase.Im on the road all the time for work, and its a major inconvenience for allof us in sales and other jobs whichinvolve visiting clients.

Vincent Gerber says hell feel thecrunch. I find it rather inconvenient, because I have to drive towork everyday. Now when I budget for myself, more money has to go towards petrol, meaning less money to use onother essentials.

Marlene Poveysays the wholesituation isdisgusting. It isdisgusting, oursalaries neverseem to be onpar with inflation. The man onthe street is nowgoing to be outof pocket again, because noweverything willincrease inprice.

Danelle van Noordwyk and Lindi Brooks bothagreed that the petrol price increase is overthe top. Its getting out of hand, now wespend more money on petrol than anything else.

Michelle OConnell says it iswrong for peopleto be expected topay more whilstnot earning more. Its unnecessary.I dont get paidmore but now Iam expected topay more.

Jonathan Everton says the increase is ridiculous. This whole petrol price story is becoming ridiculous. I used to be able to cover aworking weeks petrol with R100, now that covers two days.

    LEON STEENKAMP

A shocked student is warning all otherwomen to be cautious when making useof public transport after being sexuallyharassed on a bus on her way home lastweek.

The student who notified TygerBurger ofthe incident in an anonymous letter wastravelling on the F15 feeder bus when the in-cident occurred.

She was seated in a window seat when aseemingly decent man came and sat downnext to her.

Usually, you wouldnt look at the personnext toyounorwouldyoustrikeupaconver-sation, she writes.

She describes him as a middle-aged man, working class, dressed in a striped shirt, glasses, and formal pants.

As he clutched onto his laptop bag, I no-ticed him peeking over at my side. I contin-ued to remain quiet and isolated as the busembarked on its journey.

When the mans hand moved from his bagandbrushedagainsther leg, she edgedaway.

I moved closer towards the window giv-ing the man more than enough space to resthis hand.

Then he did it again. His hand touched my leg, trying to caress

me. Excuse me, do you mind! I said in anuncomfortable tone, she says.

The man apologised.Thinking she made her discomfort clear

she continued ignoring the man. Then she felt his hand again, this time

firmer trying to run his hand up her skirt.Furiously she grabbed the mans wrist

and pushed him off his seat. The young woman screamed at the man

as she struggled out of her seat.

I tried to hold myself together with thethought of shoving my phone down thisthroat but wondered what if he hits me ortries to hurt me? I didnt know anyone onthe bus who would help me?

She then pushed her way to the front ofthe bus and got off at the first stop on GieRoad.

The mayoral committee member forroads, transport and stormwater Brett Her-ron says they view the incident in a very se-rious light.

I would like to apologise for the extreme-ly unpleasant encounter the letter writer ex-periencedononeof ourMyCiTi buses.Whilethis is not excusable, unfortunately it is dif-ficult to control the type of person who ridesour buses, and while many of our commut-ers are decent people there is occasionallya bad element who make use of our publictransport, Herron said.

Herron said they hope to police incidentslike these through the surveillance camerason the buses.

We also have security offices at all sta-tions, and roving law enforcement officerson our buses. The South African Police Serv-ices have an office from which they operateinside our Civic Centre Station as well.

Herron appealed to the complainant tocontact the Transport Information Centrewith all the necessary information about theincident including the route, time of the daythat the bus left the station, the direction thebus was travelling, and if possible the busnumber to enable them to investigate thismatter.

Call the Transport Information Centre toreport incidents on 0800 65 64 63.. The complainant failed to mention the

exact date and time in her letter and did notrespond to an email from TygerBurger ask-ing for more details about the incident.

    LEON STEENKAMP

The City of Cape Town has vowed to investi-gate allegations that employees of the MyCi-Ti bus service have not received overtimemoney owed to them.TygerBurger recently received an anony-

mous letter claiming that MyCiTi staff havenot been paid additional compensation forovertime.

In June and August, 18 monitors wereemployed to come aboard the new IntegratedRapid Transit (IRT) project. Contracts givento us stated that we are entitled to night shiftallowance, overtime and event money, butto date none of these moneys has been paidto us, the letter states.

The writer says numerous attempts to re-coup their money were in vain.

We requested a meeting but directors andmanagement simply didnt show up as prom-ised. According to what has been told to usthe budget for this money was provided forby the city but none was paid out yet. Ourrequests are simply being ignored.

The writer claims they have been chasedfrom pillar to post.

There are thousands of stories that dontadd up. Our question is simple: who shouldwe deal with about our money? Who is theresponsible party for our money being miss-ing?

First it was promised on 30 December, then it was 30 January. Then came the storythat the correct paperwork wasnt in place. The end of February came and went withoutus seeing our money. Now the promise was30 March, yet we are not getting our request-ed meeting which means we might not seeour money as promised yet again.

The writer says the situation leaves a sourtaste in the mouth given their commitmentto their jobs.

Since we started on this project, peoplehave been commenting on a daily basisabout the improvement we make to the serv-ice be it that we ensure buses run on timeor being clean or simply in assisting a cli-ent.

All of us have mouths to feed and bills topay, and this is not money we are beggingfor; this is money we worked hard for.

When we look at various newspaper arti-cles we feel bitter-sweet as so many commut-ers smile and feel so satisfied with MyCiTiand the service we deliver yet we as staff arebeing run down by the same project every-one is raving about.. Mayoral committee member for roads,

transport and stormwater Brett Herron saidhe was unaware of the situation.

I recently learnt thatmonitors for theMy-CiTi buses had not yet received their pay-ments of overtime due to them. I find this sit-uation totally unacceptable.

Herron has asked the city manager to ur-gently investigate this and to take remedialaction, and also disciplinary steps if this isfound to be necessary.

We are committed to building a caringand well run city and this must start withhow we treat our employees. I have alsoasked the executive director of transportroads and stormwater, Melissa Whitehead,to intervene. Whitehead has now informedme she has arranged that payment will bemade immediately, Herron said on Friday.

I would like to take this opportunity toapologise to thesemonitors for the inconven-ience caused, he said.

Nobody stops at stop signsHello all who can help and make a difference!

Please thinkvery carefully over the follow-ing: nobody ever stops at any stop signs, andit is no excuse that you went over slowly. Infact few motorists go over it slowly!

For the past few years I have seen motor-ists go over stop streets at a high speed, withcellphone in one hand (and showing a fingerwith the other if you dare to show them thatthey did not stop), putting on makeup, witha dog on the (drivers) lap, etc.

The most worrying fact now is that evenred traffic lights are being ignored and Imean as in no cars are coming, so I will go!Thinking is: If I am not caught at stop streets, then nothing is going to happen if I skip ared light!

Even more worrying is that scholars seeit and do it themselves. Why not, their par-ents are doing it? The SAPS and traffic offic-ers are nowhere to be seen, so what to do?Simple: children and schools must step inand say: No more, stop where you muststop! Talk to your parents!

But in case the SAPS and traffic do some-thing they must go the whole hog and imple-

ment the (New York PD) broken glass policy:stop the motorist, do a thorough check of thevehicle (eg check the VIN, indicators, brakes, which might be the reason for notstopping, etc) and then issue a summons, andyou can be assured it will not happen againsoon as time is the main reason for skippingstop streets and traffic lights. And then thereis Aarto: I say that it is the best thing thatcan happen if the licence is taken away froma driver who cannot abide by the rules of theroad.

The above is applicable all over our coun-try, but it can be seen every day at the stop-streets and traffic-lights in Welgemoed andKenridge. What about permanent cameras atthese locations? There is ample place, amongst all the school traffic for officers topark and video what is taking place.

What about introducing a new law to dou-ble the fine (and Aarto points) if an offenceis committed within two kilometres of aschool!

Please give attention to save our children.CONCERNED CITIZENEmail

Feline so relieved! Our family would like to thank the Milner-ton/Tygerhof community for looking out forSnowy who escaped post operatively from aMilnerton vet, as reported in the TygerBurg-er article on 28 March entitled She lost thatlovin feline.

After five days of searching, Snowy wasfound safe barely two meters from the hos-pital in the grounds of the vet.

With the help of an specialist detective inmissing persons, who told me to look me-thodically from the point of escape to a 1,5kmradius, we found her near the other cats.

Pet-I-Kets Jason (an animal behaviourist)also advised me to take her sister to call herout, along with a favourite smell and food.

At 18:00 we set out to the vet and asked himto take all dogs and other stressful smellsaway so we could search. We called her, putfood out while her kitten sister cried near theshed and wooden deck. Then we heard hercry and she came running out, so relievedwe had come back for her.

Survivor Snowy had looked after herselfand been there under our noses for five days!

We all looked there before, but she was tooscared of others to come out.

If your pet goes missing, remember thisstory and know they will be within that radi-us and often closer than you think.

    ALEXANDER FAMILYWoodbridge Island

I was travelling from town to CapeTown International Airport onWednesday 28 March and hadboarded the bus with registrationnumber CA 445095 just after 18:30.

I took a seat in the front of the busclose to the driver. The bus wastravelling at a reasonable speed andswerving left and right over thehighway, causing other motoriststo blow their horns and warn thebus driver to keep in a straight line.

This went on for quite a few kilo-metres.

I looked over the drivers shoul-der to see what was going on and no-ticed thedriverwasbusyonhis cell-phone! I checked him for a whileand counted he made at least threetelephone calls while driving! Hishands were waving gestures in hisconversations while on the phone, and not safely on the steering wheelwhere they should have been.

I took a picture with my cell-phone. The photo clearly shows thebright white lights of his phone, thered lights on his dashboard andeven a view of the highway in hismirror.

I would like MyCiTi bus serviceto come forward and show me inwhich safe driving procedure itstates where a public bus driver isallowed to use a mobile phone whiledriving.

I expect a decent public apologyand the driver should not be able toget away without at least a finalwritten warning.

On a day to day basis we read andhear all about public transporterscausing accidents and injuring, even killing people. MyCiTi bus isnext in the news if these acts are al-lowed.

    FRIEDAEmailTheCitysmediamanagerKylie

Hatton responds: This is unaccept-able behaviour and we appeal to thepublic to report such incidents imme-diately to 0860 656463.

We ask them to get us the time ofthe incident, the number of the bus(visible on the front and back of thebus) and the route they travel.

Public transportnow essentialWith the price of petrol going up by 66cents a litre on the coast, it is now morepressing than ever that reliable publictransport becomes a reality.

While we can change our transport be-haviour and by so doing, save money, gov-ernment also has a role to play.

The department of energys claim thatglobal events have led to the substantialincrease in the price of petrol, is simplynot good enough.

Western Cape minister of transport Rob-in Carlisle probably has it spot-on whenhe says the inclusion of a 20c fuel levy willbe used to cover the Gauteng e-toll costs.

Why should residents of the WesternCape, who managed to stop national gov-ernments plans to toll some of our majorroutes, bear the brunt?

The price hike affects logistics, as trans-port costs are directly affected. As inputcosts rise, so prices rise, hitting the pock-ets of consumers, who are already cash-strapped.

Not that government seems to give adamn. All the transport department didwas issue a weak statement and advisedmotorists to be economic in terms of theirfuel use!

The City of Cape Town, when outliningits budget for the new year, made it clearthat infrastructure (which includes trans-port) would be one of its major focus areas.

Lets hope they keep the momentum go-ing for now, think of starting a lift cluband walk or cycle to the shop.

Use paycity.co.za to pay all local au-thority-related services and cuttraffic fine fees and queues at trafficdepartments.

This came about in a drive to cre-ate connected citizens and to pro-vide a quick, safe, secure and easyway to pay all local authority-relat-ed services. Using paycity.co.za youcan buy electricity, pay rates andtaxes, buy prepaid airtime, pay traf-fic fines and renew your licencedisk.

Just a few clicks on paycity.co.za

and you can make full use of the 32-day discount which turns a R500fine into a R250 fine, a whole 50 per-cent off.

Too few South Africans knowhow much less they could be payingfor their traffic fines, says Jean-Claude Allegrucci, GM of payci-ty.co.za.

    Furthermore, you cannowdrive

through smart road-blocks with noanxiety. Because most of us dontspend time thinking about trafficfines until it is too late, the payci-ty.co.za site also has a smart notifi-cation system. This automaticallychecks fines against your IDnumber so you have enough time toget the discount.

    The notification even reminds

you when your vehicle or driverslicences are about to expire, soyoure not liable for penalties on ex-pired registrations.

All it takes is a sign-up for a sim-ple, secure service, choosing yourpackage and youre good to go, hesays.

The free option allows one userto pay their fines via a valid credit

card. The fine is marked as paid themoment your transaction is com-plete.

Once registered on paycity.co.zayou will be able to view and payyour fines. The system is alsolinked to eNaTis (electronic nation-al administration traffic informa-tion system).

In this day of convenience andone-click solutions, paycity.co.zaprovides one portal through whichto pay all your utilities, says Alle-grucci.

    PARTY

    LEON STEENKAMP

Two men will be walking 130kmalong the West Coast to spreadthe word of God among the com-munities living there.

Undertaking the Walking withJesus walk is Jaco van As and Jus-tin Davis of Jesus to my RescueMinistries, a registered non-profitorganisation involved in outreachprojects with home-based churchgroups in Mitchells Plain andBrackenfell.

Van As says the project is some-thing very close to his heart.

This walk along the West Coastis something that God led me to domany years ago. I know it is what

we have to do from a spiritual view-point, Van As says of the event thathas been in planning for the lastyear and a half.

Starting in Saldanha Bay on 15April, the duo will be joined by vol-unteers from supporting churchesto feed impoverished children, form prayer groups and spread theword of God.

The following day they will visitLangebaan Primary and talk to thelearners up to Grade 9 about issuessuch as drugs and gangsterism.

Their trip then takes them to Dar-

ling on 18 April where the two willhave a similar talk with pupils atthe local primary school.

On 21 April they will arrive in At-lantis where they will hand out foodparcels, books, Bibles and formprayer groups.

The walk will end off on 22 Aprilwith a group of 20 people which in-cludes Ivan Siegelaar of Radio Ty-gerberg and singer Andriette Nor-man walking from Atlantis to Melk-bosstrand.

We will be walking in brandedclothing and flags to Melk-

bosstrand, where we will be hand-ing out pamphlets, Bibles andbooks. We will simply show to theworld what we stand for; that wewalk our road and lives with JesusChrist, Van As said.

The prospect of completing115km on foot in one week madesome training necessary.

We are fit. We walk 14km everyday. On the walk we will have to av-erage between 12km and 15km aday. We also have a strict pro-gramme that we need to keep to, heexplained.

They will walk all along the R27road.

He says the support the projecthas thus far received is amazing.

We have had donations from asfar as Dubai. The Community Chesthas supplied us with food and cloth-ing to distribute in the communi-ties. We have received Christianmagazines. The support from bothbusinesses and individuals hasbeen phenomenal, he says.

The event will be covered before, during (live broadcast) and afterthe walk on Radio Tygerberg whois also the main media sponsor.

Two charitable and fit volunteers arecompleting several gruelling kilometresto help a preschool in Dassenberg.

Project West Coast Winners is part of theDutch Reformed Church of Blouberg-strands community outreach programmesfocusing on the less advantaged communi-ties in the larger Blouberg area.

The project, which aims to help the 60 fam-ilies of the Klein Dassenberg Rylaan infor-mal settlement, led to the community receiv-ing its very own preschool building in 2010.

The playschool Lelies van die Duine pro-vides pre-schooling for 21 very inquisitivethree- to five-year-olds.

For the first time each child now hastheir own chair to sit on and swings in theback garden to play on. They were almost al-ways hungry, dirty and without any mentalor physical stimulation. This situation hasnow been reversed, says social workerThamar Jacobs.

Thanks to the help of a sponsor a room wasadded to the school which now functions asa kitchen.

The project is one that is very dear toJacobs and Jannie Schoeman, who volun-teer on the project.

Schoeman helped raised funds for theproject this year by completing the Cape Ar-gus Cycle Tour.

This Saturday (7 April) Jacobs will be run-ning the Two Oceans ultra-marathon in sup-port of the preschool with Schoeman com-peting in the half marathon.

These people receive little or no assist-ance from any private organisations or thegovernment, says Schoeman.

The residents live in temporary structuresand some have been living on the land whichbelongs to the Cape Town municipality forthe last 30 years.

The aim of Project West Coast Winners isto assist the community to become more selfsufficient and to give, especially the childrena chance to escape the cycle of poverty.

The public can support the project bysponsoring the kilometres that Schoemanand Jacobs will cover during the TwoOceans race. Visit the WestCoastWinner-sPlaySchool Facebook page or contactThamar Jacobs on 021 554 3268 [email protected].

Ikhaya Le Themba Home Based Care re-cently received a massive financial boostfrom PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC).

A corporate social investment team fromPWC visited Ikhaya Le Thembas offices inTable View last week Thursday and pre-sented them with a R40 000 cheque towardstheir community centre building fund.

During the day, caregivers from Khay-elitsha and Du Noon joyfully shared theirstories and experiences with the PWC teamand hearts were knitted together. Duringthis time Ikhayas legacies became very ev-ident: We do a lot with a little and Itsbetter to give than to receive.

Dreams and visions were shared amongthe group and plans were made to tackle

community projects together in the future.Everyone agreed when we work togeth-

er as a team, communities are beingchanged for the better, one life at a time.

Ikhaya Le Themba was established in2003 and what started as home based caresoon expanded to include a soup kitchenfor patients and their families, as well assupport groups and skills development forrecovering patients.

Caring for orphans and vulnerable chil-dren, as well as a training programme forother communities in rural areas, soon fol-lowed.

The ripple effect was endless and a bless-ed journey of mercy had begun with so lit-tle.

    Journey began with so little

The ecstatic Ikhaya Le Themba team holds the R40 000 PriceWaterhouseCoopers donationcheque.
