He started his journey on the road of re-demption when he became a pastor, but itwas only after the tragic death of his firstwife.“She had cystic fibrosis – a long and dis-

gusting disease. And then in 2006 she passedaway. The next year I hid under covers, sleeping, drinking, on anti-depressants andthen in 2008 it was the Argus. People kepttellingme, ‘C’mon. You said if you stand fornothing you fall for anything. Take astand!’,” remembers Korff. The inspirational pastor then completed

the Argus while riding on a bicycle withouta seat.

He laughs.“I stood the entire route!”Since then he has broken 13 jaw-dropping

world records, such as sinking the longestputt (115 metres), punching a speed bag forover 26 hours, and the fastest round of golfwith just a putter in 42 minutes (he hit a 250metre drive that day!)All these are impressive, but if he can

manage to read the whole New Testamentin one sitting, with the force and convictionof an energetic rapper, then it would proba-bly take the cake.Korff gave a demonstration toTygerBurg-

er, but one should really hear it. How do

you write to the beat of a hip-hopping beat-box?“The in-hab-itants of Je-richo where per-

ver-tedwith sin-and-corrupt, surroundedbya wall so-thick-that chariots raced on top...”Korff wants people to donate funds in or-

der to give audio Bibles to kids from 100schools nationally. There are even people from Pakistan and

South Korea who have expressed an inter-est in the project.A portion of the money raised will also go

to the Gen-X Youth Centre. To get in touch with Korff go to his page

Keep your focus on silver liningsANDRÉ BAKKES

O ne evening in April 2006 TableView’s Deon van Zyl made a decisionthat would change his life forever.

He was on his way to a karaoke bar inWest Palm Beach, Florida, when a drunkendriver shattered his dreams.

“Obviously I don’t remember what hap-pened that night, but whenever I went tothis place I either went over the bridge orunder the bridge. That night I decided to goover the bridge,” says Deon.

Some 21 days later and he woke up in ahospital bed.

Deonwas toldhewas in amotorcycle acci-dent and that he broke his spine.

His dreamof becoming a chef slowly evap-orated before his eyes.

From that day on his optimistic goalswere replaced by simply staying optimistic.

Full of apprehension he returned to SouthAfricawith a string of if-only nightmares onhis trail.

DreamDeon rebuilt his life, met his wife and fa-

thered two children, but the desire to be-come a chef still burned silently within. Adream he believes is still within his reach.

“My friends and family will tell you thatmy signature dish is my lamb shank,”laughs Deon.TygerBurger interviewed him this week-

end to hear how he manages to stay focusedon the silver lining while the cloud of life-long paralysis hangs over him.

“I want to be successful inwhatever I pur-sue, but now my family comes first. Beingable to support them and keep them happyis enough!”

He now thrives in his job in the office au-tomation industry and doesn’t let his disa-bility stand between him and happiness.

He originally travelled to the USA viaWorkaway International and in his short

time there as a chef he quickly establishedhimself as an extraordinary talent.

Were it not for that one night in 2006whenhe chose to drive across the bridge and notunder it, he might have pursued his dream.

But he would not have met his wife, Lee-Ann, and fathered his two beautiful, amaz-ing children.

Deon has an infectious lust for life and isclearly a born optimist.

InspirationHemay also have missed the chance to be

such an inspiration to others.Says Charlotte Quenet-Meintjes, Head of

Workaway International South Africa: “Ihave never met anyone quite like Deon be-fore.He is oneof themost fantastic individu-als and its clear that he never lets anythingget him down.”

It was so unfortunate and dreadful to hearabout Deon’s accident, but the way he hascome out on the other side by taking every-thing in his stride is phenomenal, Charlotteadds.

“Wewish him all the best in his future en-deavours and find it absolutely heart-warm-ing that he has not let his disability definewho he is and what he can do.”

Deon spoke for a long time about his ad-venture in America at five star countryclubs and how he eventually triumphedover unexpected challenges.

It isn’t always easy, but a positive outlookis serving him well.

Yet, sometimes, just for a moment, hewonders how things would be today if hechose to take the road leading under thebridge instead of across it that night backin 2006.

The dark underbelly of the tow-truck in-dustry has become even with the stab-bing to death of 45-year-old Linley

Spencer Summers. On the afternoon of 15 June, Summers

was pronounced dead as a result of a singlestab wound. The accused, Chris Olieslager (40), main-

tains his innocence and on 28 August it willbeup to theprosecutors to prove thathewasthe one who stabbed Summers. In the meantime, Maitland police are re-

questing assistance from the public to comeforward with eyewitness accounts.W/O Siyabulela Vukubi, spokesperson

for the local police, elaborates on the inci-dent: “It is alleged that a container truckand an unknown car were involved in anaccident whereby three tow trucks showedup to attend to that particular accident. Anargument ensued between the tow truckdrivers whereafter one allegedly stabbedthe other. Thevictimdied later inhospital.”However, Summers’ brother hasmade al-

legations attacking Olieslager’ characterand work ethics have.

ThreatsOlieslager was contacted byTygerBurger

to respond to these, but he couldn’t com-ment under the advice of his legal represen-tation.He did admit that he is “dying” to com-

ment, because there is “a whole lot that

needs to be exposed”.Summers’ brother, Lance, says that Ol-

ieslager threatened his brother’s life on thenight before the alleged attack.Another tow-truck operator who wishes

to remain anonymous says that the suspi-cion exists in the industry that the accidentwas a set-up.Hearsay, suspicions and accusations are

all thatTygerBurger has to go on rigth now.The police, the legal teams and this news-

paper are looking for proof. What is certain is that both the tow truck

companies Summers and Olieslager workfor arrived at an accident scene at the Koe-berg interchange in Maitland on 15 June.Summers was there with his child and it

is alleged that Olieslager stabbed him afteran altercation.According to Lance, Summers’ sonwas in

the car when he heard an argument breakout between his dad and Olieslager. The child did not see his father get

stabbed, but when he heard that someonewas injured he allegedly saw Olieslagerwalk away from the scene and put a knifeback into his pocket.Lance continues: “I had a conversation

with the accused the night before. He toldme that my brother put out a contract onhis life of R200 000. This was later denied tome by the person who was apparently fund-ing this hit. That night the accused threat-ened to kill my brother.”Olieslager and an accomplice then hand-

ed themselves over to the police. After Ol-

ieslager appeared in court hewas given bailof R2 000. The next court date is 30 August.Lance is not certain if the death of his

brother is connected to a territory battle be-tween the tow-truck operators. He concludes: “In 1998 there were 35 tow-

truck companies operating in the CBD.Now there is only one – Urban Towing. I’mconvinced that Olieslager has contacts inhigh places.”The operator who wishes to stay anony-

mous says that the tow-truck industry iscut-throat. The person adds: “It is vital forthe public to be educated. If they are in acci-dent theymust insist on signingadocumentwith the price of towing on. They must re-member that there is a limit some insur-ance companies will pay.

Reputation“I know of operators who will charge up toR7 000 to tow a vehicle. The towing industrydoes not have a good reputation. It’s verysad...”Summers is survived by his wife Karen

and children Chandré, Joshua and Zara. His family placed an advertisement

which reads: “A smile for all, a heart of gold. One of the best the world could hold. Neverselfish, always kind, what a beautiful mem-ory you left behind. One last hug daddyfrom Zara. We love and miss you.”V Anyone with information that can assist with theinvestigation is requested to contact Det W/O Ver-meulen at 078 353 0222 or Maitland police at021 506 9400.

Tow truck wars: one dead

“Motorists beware!Alwayskeepyourval-uables in your boot and out of sight.”This stark warning comes from Table

View Police after an increase was notedin theft out of or from motor vehicles. In addition the well known traditional

methods of forced entry to gain access tovaluables inside vehicles, there are newmethods. New statistics reveal that themodern method of remote jamming hasbecome the second most commonly usedto commit crimes of this nature. The principle behind this method is

that certain thirdparty remote control de-vices could reportedly interferewith a ve-hicle’s remote control if both are used at

the same time. These remotes are set to the same fre-

quency as somemotormanufacturer’s re-motes, which then jam the vehicle’s re-mote control frequencies, preventing theelectronic central locking system fromoperating successfully. The modus operandi is that thieves

need to be in close proximity of their vic-tim, would watch the motorist park theirvehicle and once they are out of the vehi-cle press their remote and hold it down, jamming the remote control lockingmechanism of the vehicle. When the own-er attempts to lock their vehicle the signalis therefore jammed and the vehicle re-

mainsunlocked. Theunsuspecting owneris none the wiser as they are normally acouple of metres away.To avoid the consequences of theft out

of or from motor vehicles by way of thismodernmethod, motoristsusinga remotemust ensure that they physically checkthat their motor vehicles are properlylocked when they leave their vehicle. Novisible forced entry could result in an in-surance claim being repudiated by insur-ers since the onus is on the insured to en-sure that their vehicle was properlylocked in the first instance.V Contact Table View police on 021 521 3300 orthe local neighbourhood watch on 084 383 1814.

For Richelle Graham, founder of the LuckyLucy Foundation, there is nothing morebeautiful in life than a severely abused andneglected animal miraculously recoveringto trust human beings again. In fact, for the past three years Richelle

alongwith her employees and volunteers atthe foundation have saved or dramaticallychanged the lives of thousands of destituteanimals in and around Cape Town.A commendable reason for this worthy

foundation to be a beneficiary at this year’sTygerBurger “Cause We Can” charity con-cert, which takes place at theBellville CivicCentre on 28 July. This concert now in its 11th year, will fea-

ture the likes of JuanitaduPlessis,AmandaStrydom, Karen Zoid, Albert Frost, KoosKombuis and many more.It all started in 2010 when Richelle found

a dog tied to a railway line. Trains had goneover her, her leg was severed and she waspregnant. She was rushed to theMarket Street Ani-

mal Hospital in Paarl where vets did anemergency operation to try stabilise her.Her mangled right front leg was amputatedbut due to the shock and trauma endured, and the anaesthetic and pain medicationadministered, she lost all her puppies. They named her Lucy, and the newly

formed foundation was named in her hon-our. Since then Lucky Lucy has gonethrough extensive rehabilitation at theLucky Lucy animal shelter, where sheslowly adjusted to the amputation.Today she is a very important part of the

Lucky Lucy Foundation’s education drive. She takes trips to schools, so that when

her story is told she can help teach aboutjustice, respect and compassion for all life. The Lucky Lucy Foundation is a non-

profit, pro-life, pro-quality of life organisa-tion that tries to relieve the plight of severe-ly neglected and abused township andstreet animals, but also to socially upliftand educate destitute and impoverishedchildren and people in and around CapeTown.

“Lucky Lucy is an ambassador for thevoiceless. We oppose any form of cruelty toany animal, be it kicking a dog to inhumanemethods of slaughter for human consump-tion,” says Richelle. After three years Richelle stays motivat-

ed to see each and every one of the animalsthey rescue findhappiness inwhat she callsa “forever home”.She believes the battle against animal

cruelty and overpopulation in the city canbe won.“My deepest wish is that all like-minded

organisations get together and collaboratebecause only through coalition do I havefaith that it can be done.”Funds and monetary support remain her

biggest challenges to date as the foundationstares down ever-growing vet bills, foodbills and staff salaries. Apart from this theyare constantly in need of “adoptive par-ents” for their animals.“Many people have not yet been reached

to be educated on the effects of backyardbreeding and the facts out there. Peopleneed to know that going to any shelter firstbefore finding a furry companion mightjust mean changing the life of that rescuedanimal forever and there is no better feel-ing than that,” she says. They currently have over 180 animals on

the foundation’s farm, ranging from dogsand cats to ducks, chickens and pigs.As Richelle and the team at Lucky Lucy

continues their brave work, hermessage tothe South African public remains strong.“People should join our network of hun-

dreds of people working to make South Af-rica safe and more humane for all livingcreatures. You’ll make the jobs of everyoneworking for animals a little easier by lend-ing a hand and spreading themessage of re-sponsible pet ownership andanimal protec-tion,” she says.Every cent of the proceeds for each ticket

purchased from this organisation for the“Cause we can” concert will go towards theorganisation. Tickets cost R250 and can bepurchased from Kerry-Jean 083 271 8114;Caryn Allen 083 261 4295 orMarcia van Eck081 802 5114.

Top of the world to fight dreaded TB

Leigh Rynhoudwill be climbingKilimanjaro toraise funds forthe BrooklynChest Hospital.

ANDRÉ BAKKES

What does suffering from tuberculosis(TB) and climbingKilimanjarohavein common?

While scaling the highest free-standingmountain in the world at 5 895 metres onemight experience shortness of breath, nau-sea and hallucinations.

These are just some of the symptoms andside effects of TB and its treatment.

A clinical psychologist at Brooklyn ChestHospital, Leigh Rynhoud (40), will attemptto conquer the mountain in September andraise funds for the hospital, particularly forthe treatment of deadly strains of TB.

The Bothasig resident says the funds willbe used for two projects, namely visitortransport and a work-skills project.

Support“I know how important support from the

patient’s family is and some of them cannotafford to come for a visit. As for the work-skills project, some of the reasons why peo-ple end up getting TB include not eatinghealthily or not looking after themselves ap-propriately. To just release them fromhospi-tal and put them in the same situation aftera year of fighting the illness doesn’t help. They must learn something new,” she ex-plains.

The hospital treats about 250 patients whosuffer from Extremely Drug Resistant TB(XDR-TB).

In Rynhoud’s professional capacity, shefaces a proverbial Kilimanjaro every day.

She has to motivate patients who are star-ing death in the face.

Motivation“During therapy I would sometimes tell

the patient to look at Table Mountain. Iwould say: ‘You can’t wish yourself to the

top. All you can do is try. And even whileyou walk around the hospital grounds, ifthat is your training for climbing it, it is stilltraining for climbing that mountain’,” con-tinues Rynhoud.

So, in order to raise funds and motivateher patients, she has decided to climb Kili-manjaro.

“It could take a patient up to a year to over-come TB, so my journey started on TB Dayon 25 March and will end a year later,” shesays.

DonationsRynhoud will be paying for the trip her-

self, so all the money raised will go straightto the hospital.

The success of her journey doesn’t dependon her preparations or her conviction, buton people out there donating money for agood cause.

According to her, people gladly donatemoney for cancer or HIV/Aids, but they arenot so considerate when it comes to TB.

One of these reasons, according to Ryn-houd, is that people tend to underestimatethe disease. Which leads to the question, how serious is TB really?

She sums up the problem in her blog(www.kileighmanjarovstb.blogspot.com):“According to the WHO, approximately 8,7million people became ill with TB in 2011,1,4 million people died and 10 million chil-dren were left orphaned after their parentssuccumbed to this disease worldwide. It isestimated that in the 22 high burden coun-tries there are 10 million people living withactive TB. Sub-Saharan Africa has the high-est proportion of new cases per populationin the world. In 2011 it was estimated thatthere were nearly 30 000 people in the CapeTown metro area suffering from TB.”V To donate go to www.tbhivcare.org and click ondonate and then on the Kileighmanjaro.vs.TB link.

The Provincial Regulatory Entity (PRE) islooking to roll out an integrated trafficmanagement system at schools in the prov-ince.This news came after an 11-year-old

schoolgirlwas killedwhen she crossedKoe-berg Road.TygerBurger reported on this accident in

last week’s article entitled “In memory ofyoung Ester”.The integrated management system will

apparently include a tracker, which will beconnected to a traffic light. The traffic light will then turn red when

a car approaches and a pedestrian is tryingto cross the road.PRE’s senior manager for operating li-

censing and permits, Bernie McMahon, re-vealed this during the treeplanting ceremo-ny at Ysterplaat Primary in memory of Es-ter Nsenga-Banza.This system might, according to McMa-

hon, be implemented at most schools.“It’s no good if we are all here today and

tomorrow our intervention stops. Safety isongoing. Children are the future of tomor-

row. We need to roll this out. Ysterplaatisn’t the main focal point,” she explains. The Safer Schools initiative will also en-

sure that children are educated on the dan-gers of crossing a road.“Wewill educate the children on an ongo-

ing basis and then they will go out and edu-cate their families and friends,” she says.A lot of research will have to be done be-

fore it can be decidedwhich trafficmanage-ment measures will be installed where, butinsofar as the other projects go, it is clearMcMahon is eager to get the show on theroad.“We need clear signage in front of

schools, humps where there should behumps and traffic lights where needed. Weare also giving reflector jackets to Ysterp-laat in the meantime,” she concludes.Ysterplaat Primary’s principal, Johann

Kruger, has been asking authorities toerect a traffic light in front of the school inKoeberg Road for years.Several accidents later and it seems as if

Kruger might finally get his wish. Untilnew traffic lights are installed, however, they will have to make do with reflectorjackets for traffic wardens.

Children aged six to 12 enjoyedfun-filled mornings learning about food webs and the importance of plants and animalsin the environment. Outdoor activities allowed the children to identify plants and animals, their functions and the effects on a food web if a species is removed or becomesextinct. Other activities included races, nature bingo, scavenger hunts and bio-billionairewhich encouraged group work amongst the children and tested the knowledge they hadlearned throughout the programme. One thing I really appreciatedabout the TV programme Chips,is the fact that motorists areregularly fined for “unsafe lanechanging” by not using theirindicators when switchinglanes. I really wish our trafficofficials could do the same, because it seems as if SouthAfrican motorists don’t knowthat it’s illegal.

SLICE OF LIFE

Help our furryfriends livebetter livesThey are man’s best friends and love usunconditionally, yet too often the animalsin our communities are neglected andabused. These animals end up in one of the

many animal shelters who rescue andrehome unwanted and abused animals. The Lucky Lucy Foundation, one of the

beneficiaries of this year’s ’Cause we Cancharity concert, is one such organisation.

The drive to encourage pet lovers toadopt rescues rather than buy pets, remains a difficult one. While The Lucky Lucy Foundation

believes in education and sterilisation, rather than euthanasia, the harsh realityis that the overpopulation of sheltersmeans some animals who don’t find their“forever home” face the risk of beingeuthanised.By adopting a furry companion, you

will be saving a life, and in the process, you might just find yourself changed. There are plenty of studies outlining

the benefits of animals as social andemotional support and according to theResearch Centre for Human/Animalinteraction at the University of MissouriCollege of Veterinary Medicine interact-ing with animals can increase Oxytocin, which helps us feel happy.Of course, there are those of us unable

to offer the space an animal needs, butthat doesn’t mean we can’t help.Small financial contributions and

donations of food and pet products arealways welcome. Every little bit helps toimprove conditions for the animals.

The Casual Day Project team has chal-lenged all fun-loving South Africans toparticipate in Mandela Day by raisingfunds for 67 stickers in 67 minutes on 18July – andwhile they are at it, tomake eve-ry day Mandela Day!

The objective of Mandela Day is to in-spire individuals to take action to helpchange the world for the better. This is ex-actly what Casual Day beneficiary organi-sations will be doing on Friday 6 Septem-ber, but it is never too early to start plan-ning to dress up in the 2013 theme, whichis “Go Big”.

“Mandela Day and Casual Day have thisin common: both projects aim to empowercommunities everywhere. Casual Dayseeks to be instrumental in seeing personswith disabilities being included fully in so-ciety as interdependent contributors to abetter society,” says Casual Day projectleader Celeste Vinassa.

“Take action, inspire change, make eve-ry day a Mandela Day.”

This is the call to action of Mandela Dayand individuals and organisations are freeto participate as they wish; whether as anindividual, community, business, non-governmental organisation or a govern-ment department. All you have to do on 18July is donate 67 minutes of your day todoing something good in any way you can, supporting your chosen charity or servingyour local community.

Casual Day is the flagship project of theNational Council for Persons with Physi-cal Disabilities. This year they aim tomakeamassive impactwith their “GoBig”campaign – so whether you wear big hair, big glasses, a big tie, big shoes, or just gobig on the number of stickers youwear, an-ything goes, as long as it’s big.V To order marketing material for your Casual Daycampaign visit www.wcapd.org.za, email [email protected] or contact Esme or Valda on021 555 2881.

Glitz & glam of recycle fashion

Blouberg Ridge Primary School pupils recently headed out toKhayelitsha to participate in The Way of Life Church TeenRecycling Fashion show. The show, which celebrated Youth Day,allowed children to show off their design skills using nothingbut recyclable materials, was a success. Teacher Malcolm Freeman says: “It’s wonderful to see teens realising their own responsibility in the future of our planet. Youth Day is about bothlooking at the sacrifices made in the past as well as lookingahead to how we can sustain the future.” Along with the glitzand glamour the audience was also treated to songs, danceand interactive conversations between teens and parents whichhighlighted differences and similarities.

“I love entertaining people, it’s what Ido,” laugh-a-minute Emo Adamssays.

“It’s actually who I am,” he says, adding:“I’m very passionate about being on stage.”While Emo has been in the Afrikaans en-tertainment industry for about five years, hewas always performing. Therewasno epiph-any or decisive moment that pushed him to-wards his career choice. He jokingly points out that he doesn’tthink he had a choice in the matter, he saysinstead; his dad forcedhim into entertainingwith Malay choirs and “Kaapse Klopse”.“One thing led to another and now we arehere today,” he says.Emo is known for his hilarious stage pres-ence, which sometimes includes pullingsome funny faces.“I don’t think pulling faces was intention-al, it came over time,” Emo says, sayingagain that he just wants to entertain people. His dancing is another thing that keepsaudiences entertained. “I don’t think any-one taught me to dance, it was a case of imi-tating people,” Emo says.“If Michael Jackson’s on the TV, then youwanted to be like Michael Jackson,” Emosays, adding: “All the good movers and theiconic guys like JamesBrown, were the guysI liked.”

’Cause we CanThen of course there was his involvementwith the Malay choirs and “Kaapse Klopse”which also helped.Emo is one of the artists who continuallysupport TygerBurger’s ’Cause we Can con-certs by performing for free at the show eve-ry year.“I perform at ’Cause we Can every year, because I can, and I want to,” he says.“With success comes responsibility and

with responsibility you eventually have tohelp other people,” Emo explains. “It’s allabout caring and sharing,” he adds.“We do a lot of charities throughout theyear, ‘CauseweCan is just oneof them,”Emosays, adding that he feels that it’s his socialresponsibility to give back.Emowill be at Die Boer this weekwith hisband, Take Note.

LegacyEmo says the smaller audiences and thespace to test new material are among thethings that make performing at Die Boerspecial. “For me, Die Boer just one of thoseplaces with a legacy,” he says. When he isn’t on stage elsewhere, Emo isworkingwith one of his new projects, his AllStar Theatre in Brackenfell.“It was a dream,” Emo says of the theatre. With no help from investors, Emo saved tobe able to open the theatre himself.“Like Die Boer, I want to provide a plat-form that can become a legacy for other art-ists.” He wants the theatre to be a space fornew performers as well as more established

name.Emo and his band, Take Note, do morethan 250 shows a year. He says his businessside, likeworkingwith the theatre and otherartists andhis involvementwithhousing de-velopments is what keeps him sane.V To find out more about Emo Adams and hisprojects, visit www.emoadamslive.co.za.V You can catch Emo Adams and Take Note in actionat Die Boer this week (until Sunday). SAREL BURGER

derblom, Migale Dawood, Nathier April (al-mal Jan Kriel-skool), Matthew Alexander,Keanen Parnell, JasonWessels, LoganMoos(almal Westcliff) en Henwille Cleophas (DeGrendel).Voorts is Herman Venter (De Grendel) be-

noem as as die LSOB-verteenwoordiger bydie Akademieweek, terwyl Riaan le Sueur(Westcliff) as een van die SA span se afrig-ters aangewys is.

Tygerbergers maak stem dik

SAREL BURGER

sche Kloof/Walmer, Goodwood t Kuilsri-vier, Hands & Heart t Villager.

Cape Town’s club rugby leagues are setfor an overhaul next season when thecurrent format of the competition

will be scrapped. The Western Province Rugby Football

Union (WPRFU) currently runs eight dif-ferent leagues of 10 teams each, with thetop two gaining promotion to a higherleague each year. The bottom two teamsare relegated.

However, as of next year the top 45 clubsin the region will be split into three differ-ent 15-team groups – A, B and C – as partof the same “Premier Competition”.

The clubs seeded from 46-78 on the rank-ings will be divided into three different re-gional competitions, in the “Northern”,“Southern” and “City” Leagues.

The change in format has received con-trasting reactions from some of the city’sbiggest clubs. Michael Reynolds, chairper-son of South Africa’s oldest club, Hamil-ton’s, says he is against the change.

“It takes us away from the strength ver-sus strength (competition). Maties alreadybeat the lower sides in the Super LeagueA by 80 points and now there are five sidesthat are weaker than the bottom sides inthe league,” he says.

WeaknessReynolds adds that the new competi-

tion’s other weakness is that teams will on-ly play each other once in the league stage, before the top six sides advance to knock-out rounds.

“The structure now – strength versusstrength, home and away – is the only wayit can work. That’s a true reflection. Youplay home and away, no excuses.”

The knockout phase of the competitionwill be similar to SuperRugby, with the toptwo in each group advancing to semi-fi-nals, while teams placed three to six willface off in quarter-finals to determine theother two semi-finalists.

Teams placed from seventh to 14 in thegroups will advance to a “Top Eight”knockout competition, with quarter-finals,

semis and a final.Although the top two and bottom two teams

in each group will still be promoted and rele-gated, the promotion/relegation format hasalso changed. The third-placed team in eachleague, expect Group A of the “Premier Com-petition”, will face off against the 13th-placedteam in the lower league, with the winnergaining promotion.

Chairperson of Primrose RFC, FaghierGamieldien, says the inclusion of a knockoutelement is one of the primary reasons he vot-ed for the tournament.

“If you are in fourth place in Super LeagueB and you know you cannot be promoted ordemoted then what are you playing for?” hesays.

Opportunity“Everyyearyou findMaties or theotherbig

clubs winning the Super League A. The newstructure gives the other clubs a chance towin the league. It gives everyone an opportu-nity to win.”

The regional leagues will take a similar for-mat, with the 11 teams in each league playingthe other sides in their league only once.

The top three from each league will then ad-vance to a combined league competition, toplay a single round of matches to find an ulti-mate winner.

Teams placed from four to 11 will play an-other round of games in their respectiveleagues.

Although the competition as a whole drewcontrasting responses from the various clubs, everyone agreed that a major downside wasthe fact that the second, third or under-20team competitions will not have a knockoutcompetition.

Dr Nasief van der Schyff, Collegians RFCjunior vice-president, says the length of theseason could have socio-economic impacts onsome clubs.

“In the new format each team is guaranteedonly 14 games, whileweare currently guaran-teed 18 games,” he says.

“For a club like Collegians, which uses rug-by as an alternative to gangsterism anddrugs, it may result in us not playing enoughrugby and putting players at risk.”
