A Parklands woman was robbed in her

home last week and the perpetrators alleg-

edly used a duvet to prevent her fromseeing

    them.

Table View police said the incident oc-

curred just after 11:00 on Tuesday 24 No-

    vember. According to police spokesperson

    Lieutenant Adriana Chandler the woman

    was inside herCoventClose homewhen she

was surprised by two men who entered the

property after scaling a perimeter wall and

gained access through an unlocked door.

She says the men covered the woman

with a duvet and demanded to know where

the safe was and asked for the combination.

The complainant showed them the safe,

but did not know the combination to the

safe and the suspects used a hammer they

found in the garage to open the safe. The

contents of the safe were removed and the

suspects fled the scene. They were not

    armed and were not disguised.

At this stage it is unknown if a vehicle

wasused or inwhich direction themen fled.

The Parklands resident was not injured

ed a female resident with a

    Police spokesperson

    Warrant Officer Daphne

    demanded the woman

    hand over her cellphone

    before fleeing the scene.

    The woman was not in-

ilnerton police have issued a stern

warning for residents to hand over

    unlicensed firearms.

This follows the arrest of a 34-year-old

man from Sunset Beach last weekend.

According to a report, Milnerton police

along with the Western Cape Flying Squad

swooped in on the mans home at about

    14:00 onFriday 27November following a tip-

off about unlicensed firearms stored at the

    house.

During a searchpolice discovered four as-

sault rifles, one .38 special revolver and am-

munition. The occupant of the house had no

licences for these firearms and ammuni-

    tion.

    Cluster commander Brigadier Aneeqah

Jordaan says residents in possession of un-

licensed firearms should rather hand in the

    firearms than keep them unlawfully.

If a family member passes away and he

or she owned a firearm, these firearms

should be handed in at the nearest police

station until the completion of the estate,

    he says.

This is once again an example of good co-

operation between the community and po-

    lice.

After months of investigation, the man who

is infamously known as Tandjies has been

    arrested in Atlantis.

According to a report by Melkbosstrand

    police, theAtlantismanhasbeenarrested for

three house break-ins and one case of theft

    in Melkbosstrand.

    Police spokesperson Constable Debbie Al-

lard says detectives have been hard at work

to arrest the man who has evaded arrest for

    several months. Detectives visited several

homes in Atlantis where he was believed to

be as he had no fixed address, and left their

contact details requesting residents to con-

tact them if the man was spotted.

Allard says for months officers grinded

their teeth as the man sent taunting SMSes

claiming the police would never catch him.

What made this case interesting is that

Tandjies would then SMS the detectives and

send cheeky messages. He also got others to

call the police claiming to be his lawyers.

His photograph has been circulated in re-

cent weeks and officers of the Atlantis crime

prevention unit managed to track him down.

He appeared in the Atlantis Magistrates

    Court last week.

According to the background document, the

project will include three phases and the

TISF will be constructed on vacant land

within KNPS. It proposes that construction

of this facility will consist of a concrete pad

onto which up to 160 dry storage casks can

    be placed.

It further states that construction will

commence in 2018 and is set to be complete

    in 12 months.

Used fuel assemblies will be loaded into

casks at the reactor unit fuel buildings and

transferred to the TISF in batches. The se-

quence of loading and transferring one dry

storage cask to the TISF will take approxi-

    mately 10 working days.

Eskomhas identified six potential sites for

the TISFwhich have been evaluated and the

document lists two sites as viable options.

The first site is located north of KNPS

while the second site is located along the

    southern boundary of KNPS.

VA publicmeeting on the proposal was held in Octo

ber and the document outlines the next steps in the

EIA process. To view the document visit

    Newplan to talk about violence

    MONIQUE DUVAL

    @monique_duval

    A

newplan to raise awareness about the

abuse ofwomenand children is on the

cards following a low turnout at an

event in Table View last week.

The launch of the 16 Days of activism for

no violence against women and children

held at the Kingsgate Church last week saw

less than 15 residents attend. The event was

aimed at raising awareness about various

types of abuse, the effects and the possible

    legal implications.

In his address Table View station com-

mander Colonel Dirk Vosloo said the turn-

    out was disappointing and questioned

whether Table View residents had their

    head in the sand.

    Following a presentation by Vilikazi

Khatshwa of the Womens Legal Centre, a

60-year-old Table View woman made a des-

perate plea for help. She gave a spine chill-

ing account of abuse at the hands of her hus-

band and said while she had followed the

legal processes to obtain a protection order

it was revoked when she went to court.

    Protection order thrown out

    Iwasmarriedandhadaprotectionorder

which went to the Table View police in De-

cember 2013. I have been through themagis-

trates and courts and he comes in and fights

with the attorney. Hewalks out of court and

they threw outmy protection order. My son

and Iwere thrownon the streets. I have pho-

tographs of my beaten body. I have been

raped five times as a child. Im standing

    here today a broken woman.

Khatshwa thanked the woman for her

    braveryandopted to speak toher inprivate.

In her key note address, Milnerton police

    cluster commanderBrigadierAneeqah Jor-

daan expressed her disappointment at the

turnout and explained Table View was cho-

sen due to the number of assault cases.

    During an interviewwithTygerBurger in

August, Vosloo explained police were going

back to the drawing board to develop strate-

    gies to address assault cases.

Following a steady increase sinceMay he

explained while property related crime has

shown a decrease, the increase of contact

crimes, mostly common assault, has police

worried. The cases were widespread across

the precinct making it difficult for police to

host interventions in a specific area.

If the assaultswere occurring in one spe-

cific area or sector, it would be easy for us

to host a workshop in that area explaining

the dangers of assaulting someone. With

this trend, however, it is across all sectors

and not confined to a specific area. The cas-

es vary so much from a domestic violence

incident to a fight between tenants of a com-

plex over parking, he said at the time.

Police found out when called to murder

In her address, Jordaan explained the na-

tional campaign was aimed at highlighting

the effects of abuse and domestic violence

while providing women and children with

    the help they need.

Community Police Forum chairperson David Harris, Colonel Dirk Vosloo, Vilikazi Khatshwa of the

Womens Legal Centre and Brigadier Aneeqah Jordaan light candles for those affected by abuse.

    PHOTO: MONIQUE DUVAL

It is sad to see the few people who are

here. We chose this area because our statis-

tics show we have a problem here.

Jordaan encouraged the few who did re-

spond to start talking and reporting cases

of domestic violence and explained police

often only find out about the problem when

they are called to a murder scene.

The cluster has also embarked on a whis-

tle campaign to assist women who are vul-

nerable when going to work. The whistles

have been handed out in various communi-

ties where women walk to bus stops and

they are encouraged to blow the whistle

    when they are in danger.

Jordaan explained police will now visit

various religious institutions and speak di-

rectly to residents to spread theword on the

    campaign.

    Community to tackle drugs

    MONIQUE DUVAL

    @monique_duval

    S

he was a beautiful, helpful girl who

made some bad choices. But just a few

days before her death she made a plea

    for help.

This is the story relayed by Summer

Greens residents last week during a vigil

held for resident Nicola de Goede in Emer-

ald Way Park. They explain that De Goede,

a known drug user, died recently shortly

after she was found between two houses

    during a community march.

    Thought she was dead

Initially they thought she was dead, but

when they realised she was still alive she

was rushed to hospital where she passed

    away.

As the sun set over Summer Greens on

Tuesday 24 November, tears fell as resi-

dents made heartfelt pleas for the drug

problem to be tackled. Residents lit candles

and stood with photographs of De Goede,

more fondly known as Nicky. They reflect-

ed on her life and shared stories in a park

which has become synonymous with drug

    use.

The vigil was organised by resident

Bridgette Lloyd who explained Nicky went

to school with her daughter and was well

known in the community. During her ad-

dress, she explained many Summer Greens

families were facing adversity as children

    got hooked on drugs.

Nicky came to me before she died and

    told me she had a stroke. She wanted help;

she wanted to go to rehab. We were getting

ready to get her into a place when I heard

she had died. She was everyones child and

this could have happened to anyone. We

must come together and find a way to ad-

dress the issues that are plaguing our com-

    munity.

    Hope in her eyes

Two women shared their stories of chil-

dren who are addicted to drugs and Gary

Jacobs, chairperson of the Summer Greens

    Neighbourhood Watch (SGNHW), made a

plea for residents to assist the watch.

I knew Nicky from the streets and when

I spoke to her I could see there was hope in

her eyes. This is very sad but we need to

    unite and start lookingat thedrugproblems

in this community. My request is that you

    standupandkeepyour community safe and

help us put a stop to all the drugs.

When you see people by the train line,

report it. We know what they do there and

we must start reporting the crime and the

drugs if we want to keep our children safe.

Twomen and awoman, who residents ex-

plain are Nickys friends, were spotted

among the crowd. Thewomanwalked to the

front crowd and said she was saddened by

    Nickys passing.

Shewas a very good friend; very helpful.

You know we are all on drugs, but its hard

to stop because we dont have family sup-

port, she said as tears ran down her face.

A former gangster also came up to ad-

dress the crowd and said Nickys death

should be a catalyst for change in Summer

    Greens.

    dren and teenagers in danger.

In June she got the ball rolling and con-

    sulted with the Melkbosstrand Ratepayers

Association (MRA) about having the skate

    parkat theCountryClub.Butler alsohosted

the first fundraiser for the project in June.

    However, in September residents were

informed Butler had passed away and her

daughters would be continuing the project.

    During the establishment of Minitown,

owner Luke Shadrach explained they iden-

tified a skate park as a possible activity.

We did some research and were told a pro-

posal had already been tabled. Wemet with

theMRA and explained we had land availa-

ble. They were enthusiastic about the skate

park being erected at Minitown as it is an

    established play park, he says.

Shadrach says available land is only one

component as there aremany things to con-

sider for the new park. Keeping in line with

whatButler set out to achieve, Shadrach ex-

plains the park will be managed as a com-

munity centre where a small tariff will be

charged for the upkeep of the park.

We decided on utilising the area close to

the tennis courts as it is visible from the

street. We envisaged an area where teens

can come and enjoy skating in a safe envi-

ronmentwhile the rest of the family partici-

    pates in various other activities.

    During her interview, Butler explained

the estimated cost of the skate park was

R3m and she was working on registering

the park as a non-profit organisation.

Shadrach explains as the location had

    changed, estimatesmayvary. At this point

we are still in the early changes and need

thosewith expertise to assist uswith the de-

sign and estimates of what the project will

cost. In my meeting with the MRA we were

informed that the association was still in

possession of funds raised earlier which

will go towards the new skate park.

Located along a MyCiTi bus route, Sha-

drach believed a skate park could help

    bring children from surrounding commu-

    nities to enjoy Melkbosstrand.

    MONIQUE DUVAL

    @monique_duval

    T

he malfunctioning of a new fleet of My-

CiTi buses is in the spotlight after a

Parklands man got injured when a

    ramp failed to deploy.

    Earlier this month commuters raised

their concerns about the new 18m Scania

buses claiming they were problematic since

    first instituted in July.

Ross Halstead said on Tuesday 17 Novem-

ber hewas about to board a bus from theCiv-

ic Centre to Table View. While standing in

line he noticed one of the doors was not

working and walked to the next one.

The platform failed to come out and I

missed the step and fell through. I had a big

cut on my leg and was in pain and shock.

    Halstead says other commuters helped

him and he got onto the bus. He found the

nearest seat and tried to recover when he

was approached by a security guard.

She wanted to inform the driver of what

happened and I said I would just need a mo-

ment to recover. I was shakenup. The driver

started driving and everyone shouted for

him to stop because there was an injured

    commuter on the bus.

Halstead explains he was not happy for

what happened next. He says the driver

stepped up to him and appeared hung over.

He was poorly and messily dressed. His

shirt was hanging out and his eyes were red.

Whenwe told him the platform did not come

out he started to scream and told us it wasnt

his fault that the buses werent working.

Halstead says the conduct of the driver

added to this traumatic experience and he

opted to report the matter to the City.

City of Cape Town Mayco member for

transport Brett Herron confirms the case

was reported to the Transport information

centre (TIC) and the matter had been re-

    ferred toKidrogen, thevehicle operat-

    ing company, for further investiga-

    tion.

    Responding to questions posed by

    TygerBurger about remedial action to

fix the bus involved in the incident,

    Herron says the vehicle operating

companies are obliged to test the fleet

    of MyCiTi buses eachmorning before

the buses start operating to ensure

that the doors and ramps function as

    they should.

    Malfunctions may and will some-

times happen during the course of op-

erations. The Scania buses are brand

new and whenever a fault relates to

    amanufacturing default, the supplier

    is obliged to fix it.

He says during a trip along the T01

    trunk route, City officials established

that at certain times the ramps on the

    18-metre high-floor buses hesitate

because of the angle of deployment

when it catches on the mat.

It is during this delay that the pas-

    sengers become frustrated and press

    the emergency buttons, causing the

doors to open. When something like

    this happens, the passengers forcing

themselves out might not be aware

that the ramp has not deployed yet

andmay step into the gap between the

bus and the station/stop. There were

some instances when the ramp tried to de-

ploy and then retracted, he said. When this

happens, the bus doors will not open.

We have subsequently proposed some in-

terventions and actions and we are working

with the bus suppliers in rectifying these.

Another test run will be conducted once

these actions have been completed to see the

    effect of the adjustments.

Asked why this fleet was operational

when the City was aware of malfunctions,

Herron says: Each day there are over 20 000

door openings and ramp deployments on the

MyCiTi trunk routes alone and the limited

number of failures must be seen in this con-

text. We do all we can to limit the door and

ramp failures to theminimumand have tak-

    enaction. However, due to thehighnumber

of door openings and ramp deployments it

is impossible to guarantee that there will

never be any failure in future, saysHerron.

    Consequently, we request passengers to

be cautious when boarding and alight-

ing the buses station staff will be re-

laying this to passengers in future.

In an earlier article, Herron referred

    to concerns about malfunctions as

    teething problems, but commuters say

until these issues are resolved the bus-

    es shouldnotbeoperatingas their safe-

    ty is being compromised.

Herron says the MyCiTi service is

    safe and affordable.

The number of incidents relating to

the bus doors and ramps are minus-

cule if one bears inmind that there are

over 20 000 door openings and ramp de-

    ployments on theMyCiTi trunk routes

    alone each day.

For Halstead, the issue is not min-

uscule, and he says after incurring

medical costs he will be seeking com-

    pensation from the City.

A friend took me to the hospital

where I received stitches on my leg. I

also hurt my tibia and coccyx in the

    fall, he says.

    Responding to questions about the

    bus drivers alleged conduct, Herron

explains MyCiTi bus drivers are com-

pelled to report all incidents to the ve-

    hicle operating company.

He also says Halstead did not report

    the alleged abusive conduct.

    MyCiTi personnel should be polite

and helpful to all commuters at all times and

Iwant to request commuters to please report

any abusive or untoward behaviour to the

    Transport information centre on 0800 65 64

    53. This will enable the vehicle operating

    company or stationmanagement contractor

to take action, if needed, against any staff

member who is in breach of the code of con-

    duct for MyCiTi personnel.

    37-year-old Parklands man appeared

in court this week after being caught

with gold pellets of R50 000.

According to a report fromMilnerton po-

lice, the man was driving a Peugeot and,

    acting on information, undercover officers

approached the man at a shopping centre

in Milnerton on Thursday 26 November.

    Police spokesperson Warrant Officer

Daphne OReilly says the officer identified

    himself using his appointment certificate,

but the suspect did not believe him and

agreed to follow the officers to the police

station. While driving behind the suspect,

he threw something out of the vehicle and

officers found a box of gold pellets to the

    value of around R55 420.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Is daar iewers

    tingsbetalersgeld.

Wat die omgewing betref, verloor ons

land water met beurtwater ons voor-

land en verloor renosters steeds hul

horings en lewens teen n ongekende

tempo. Boonop verloor boere in droogte-

    geteisterde gebiede hul oeste.

    In die kommunikasie-omgewing verloor

dag- en Sondagkoerante hul lesers en

Afrikaans moet hard baklei om nie sy

status as hor onderrigtaal te verloor nie.

Met gemiddeld 49 mense wat per dag

in SA vermoor word, het die polisie

lankal sy greep op misdaad verloor.

Op sportterrein gaan dit nie veel beter

nie.

    horison?

    The Western Province Blood Transfusion

Service (WPBTS) is looking for 2 750 heroes

And theWPBTS ismaking it easy and fun

for those heroes to come forwardwith an in-

    teractive #KeepTheBeatGoing campaign

    across Facebook and Twitter.

This campaign invites South Africans to

participate by enrolling as blooddonors and

then submitting short, creative videos on

Twitter and challenging friends to do the

    same.

Potential donors are invited to Sing it,

strum it, bang it, hit it, hum it or clap it,

the campaign says, encouraging people to

submit selfie video clips, stating that they

are keeping the beat going by registering as

    donors.

    Use the hashtags #KeepTheBeatGoing

and #WPBlood and be sure to tag a friend

who youd like to challenge next, says

    WPBTS spokespersonMarlize van derMer-

    we.

Less than 1,5% ofWestern Cape residents

are registered blood donors and according

to the WPBTS, this number has to rise to

3,5% just to meet the December demand.

Were inviting everyone to join in. You

dont need to be musical to submit a clip,

and if youre already registered as a donor,

thats great too, as you can still help to raise

awareness and challenge those around you

to enrol as donors in a fun and light-hearted

    way, says Van der Merwe.

She says this campaign reflects the real-

time donor enrolment progress and poten-

tial lives saved in a central dashboard.

The beat videos will be showcased on

the campaign website, where those in the

Western Cape can also enrol as donors.

WPBTS needs a minimum of 2 750 donors

by January 2016 to meet the donor base

    goals.

    Dwaalkoel kon noodlottig wees

    ESM ERASMUS

    @erasmusesme

    n

    omdat dit so warm was.

Enkele oomblikke later het sy die geweldi-

    ge slag gehoor.

Donaldson was op 24 Oktober tussen 13:00

en 14:00 tuis by hul huis in Valenciastraat

    vlieg.

Eers toe haar man tuiskom, het hy die gat

bo in die muur raakgesien. Met nadere on-

dersoek het hulle eers stukkies sement op

die vloer gekry en toe die koel.

Die koel, waarvan net die voorste punt

gevind is, was so groot soos n AA-batte-

ry. Dit het n gat so groot soos n R5-munt-

stuk in hul dak gelaat.

huise. Ek wil mense hiervan bewus maak,

    het sy gemaan.

Sy is nou bekommerd omdat sy nog niks

    weer vandieDurbanville-polisie daaroor ge-

    hoor het nie.

Lt. kol. Marius Swanepoel van die Dur-

banville-polisie, wat die saak ondersoek, het

hierop ges dis blote spekulasie oorwaar die

koel vandaan kom, omdat die koel deur

    enigeen afgevuur kon gewees het.

Die koel is weggestuur vir ballistiese

    toetse.

    sinsvriendelike dorp

    en gemeenskap vir al-

    mal, met winkelsen-

    trums, perderitte, wyn-

    plase en staproetes wat

    wag om ontdek te word.

    Ons moes egter gro-

    tendeels op ons eie ont-

    dekkingsreise endie so-

siale media staatmaak om plekke te vind

waar ons as n klomp mammas of n gesin

    kon saamkuier.

eers geniet het, raak n straf eerder as ont-

spanning, s sy. Soos die keer toe sy met

haar maandoue baba Moedersdag in Simon-

stad gaan vier het. Dit was n sonnige dag

en alles het volgens plan verloop. Binne n

My suster het

    nogal voorgestel ek

gaan sit op die toilet en

    voed, wat my glad nie

    aangestaan het nie.

    Die restaurant het

    geen noodhulptoerus-

    ting beskikbaar gehad

    nie enmymamoes hulp

    soek by die naaste ap-

    teek, terwyl my man

    troos en die ander se

    kos koud raak.

    Hoewel dit een van

    ons gunsteling-eetplek-

    ke is, was dit skielik

    duidelik net nie geskik

vir n gesin met ons sa-

    mestelling nie, vertel

    sy.

    Soos enige entrepre-

    neursonderneming het

    ons n probleem geden-

    tifiseer en n oplossing

    probeer vind.

    Merwe, LidaVlok, CarlienMurray enNadia

Hogan bespreek, en hulle was almal baie po-

sitief oor die gedagte. Ons het begin deur

navorsing te doen oor plekkewaar ouers wil

kuier en dan tweedens wat hulle verwag

daar moet wees. Hiervolgens het ons drie

    kriteria saamgestel, naamlik babavriende-

    lik (0 tot 2 jaar), peutervriendelik (3 tot 5

jaar) en kindervriendelik (6 tot 12 jaar).

Ons het begin met n mammaforum,

maar vinnig besef ouerskap gaan oor meer

as net mammas.

beeld n algemene area is vir dinge soos doe-

mers beskikbaar is nie. As jy byvoorbeeld

    stelle in jou omgewing gee.
