BOY DIES: BODY FOUND HOURS LATER

Uncertainty surrounds the tragic deathof the seven-year-old Tyreeq Fortuinafter he drowned in the sea off Melk-

bosstrand on Monday afternoon.According to National Sea Rescue Insti-

tute’s (NSRI) local station commander,Rhine Barnes, emergency personnel wereapparently alerted by members of the publicalmost twohours after Tyreeqwas swept outinto the sea.

Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, head of Sys-tems Integration, Special Projects andDisas-ter Operations at the Disaster Risk Manage-ment Centre, says those who arrived on thescene first were told the incident happened15 to 20 minutes before.

TragedyTheundeniable and tragic truth, however,

is that the body of Tyreeq Fortuin from At-lantis was found trapped in seaweed at 17:24.

Barnes, who was on the scene himself andspoke to various parties, elaborates: “The

boy apparently went into the water withsome friends at about 14:00 and shortly afterhewas dragged into the sea by a strong tide.”

The incident was reported to emergencypersonnel at 15:46.

Despite Barnes being mystified why it ap-parently took so long to notify rescue per-sonnel, he reckons that thiswouldmost like-ly not havemade abig difference in the even-tual outcome.

“A person can drown within minutes and,considering the cold water, could be resusci-tated after 15 or so minutes,” he explains.

“The boy was with neighbours yesterday(Monday) on the last day of the school holi-days. He and his friends were in the back ofa bakkie when they decided to go back to thebeachand swim, apparentlywhile the super-vising adults went across the road to buysome food. That was when the youngster gotinto trouble. His three friends grabbed theboy by his hand, but he was pulled out oftheir grasp. He then disappeared under thewater and was never seen alive again,” saysBarnes.

Hundreds ofmotorists are swindledout of their money by dishonestpetrol-station attendants by

means of a scam known as pump-hang-ing or pump-jumping.Although the incidence of this trick-

ery has decreased on a national scaleover the years, many an unsuspectingmotorist still falls victim.Kraaifontein resident Shahied Samso-

dien of Bonnie Brook, recently wit-nessed and then botchedwhat he allegeswas such an attempt.After fuelling his vehicle at a petrol

station inKraaifontein about a fortnightago, Samsodien noticed the nozzle of thepetrol pump hanging outside of thepump, after he was served.“Having been a victim of pump-jump-

ing myself in the past, I immediately re-alised what was happening.

ProofI took a photo and when the attendant

who left the nozzle hanging noticed mehe frantically ran towards the pump. Af-ter confronting him, he swore at me andwalked away,” says Samsodien.Samsodien explains the practice as

follows: “The attendant after fuelling acar for say R100, would leave the nozzleof the pump hanging slightly out.“This prevents the pump from reset-

ting andwhen the nextmotorist pulls upand requests a bigger amount such asR200, the attendant would use the samepump, fuel the car with the requestedamount (adding on the the previousamount) and pocket the R100 differ-ence,” he says.When he reported the incident to the

manager he was told in no uncertainterms that this particular practice doesnot occur at their station.“The manager was adamant but

changed her attitude when I showed herthe picture I took. She was visiblyshocked,” he told TygerBurger.TygerBurger questioned other petrol

attendants at stations in the area, andwas told by an attendant at another pet-rol station of the same franchise thatpump-hanging is rife where he works.

Syndicate“There are three attendants who oper-

ate in a syndicate at this station andsteal a lot of money during the peak

times of the month,” the attendant whowishes to remain anonymous, said.“They watch the motorists regularly

and knowwho to target. They are awareof who checks the pumps and whodoesn’t,” he said.According to him it happens quickly

and it is very difficult to catch them outand prove what they are doing, especial-ly when small amounts are taken andthe cashier is in on it.ATygerBurger source at theMotor In-

dustryBargainingCouncil (Mibco), con-firmed that the practice of pump-hang-ing, although it has decreased in the lastdecade, is still quite widespread in theindustry.“Ten years ago, about 30 % off all staff

dismissals at petrol stations was due topump-hanging and credit card fraud. Ithink the decrease in this number corre-lates with the fact that employees aremore careful about retaining their em-ployment,” he said.According to the group communica-

tions manager of the petrol company inquestion, the dealer involved in the firstincident investigated Samsodien’sclaim and found the following:“After testing the pump again, even

with the pump not properly replaced allthe tallies at the till and at the pumpwere in order. This includes the custom-er’s transaction.“The amount of the fuel asked for is

reflected at the till and the amount of fu-el is dispensed and then the transactionis completed with payment so there isvery little gap for the theft of fuel orshort changing customers,” she said.She stuck to her comment after being

reminded that Samsodien’s action prob-ably foiled the alleged attempt.“All complaints are investigated as

they arise and any issue is dealt withwithin the letter of the law,” she said ina statement last week.She added that the dealer in this case

has stated that there have been no inci-dents of this kind reported at her stationto date, but declined to say what the at-tendant’s explanation was as to why heleft the nozzle out that day.Regarding the allegation of the syndi-

cate operating at the other station inquestion, she stated that the companycannot confirm any hearsay comments.Motorists who suspect any untoward

activities are encourage to report it atthe petrol company’s toll free ethics orcustomer services lines.

A car thief got more than he bargained forwhile trying to steal a car in Table View.Dennis Swanepoel was hanging onto the

thief through the speeding car’s window,and landed several punches before he hadto let go. This is what happened on Sundaynight as Dennis thought: “It’s you or me to-night! That’s it! One of us is going down.”in the few seconds that he sprang into ac-tion.As fate would have it, it was the thief’s

turn to go down on Sunday night.Dennis elaborates: “At about 19:30 I went

to tellmy son to close his car’swindows, but

I went to do itmyself and I saw the carmov-ing. I thought my son forgot to pull up thehandbrake or something.“Then I saw a man’s head moving in the

car and by that time he was already in theroad turning the car.”At that moment all common sense aban-

doned Dennis. He ran towards the whiteNissanandgrabbed the thief byhis raincoatthrough the open window on the driver’sside.Suffice to say the perpetrator got thefright of his life.He stepped on the accelerator while the

punches rained over him.“He was nice and sore,” laughs Dennis.“Iwashangingontohis raincoat for about

600 metres when he steered the car onto the

pavement towards a pole to knock me off.I lostmygrip and fell, sustaining a fewgrassburns and hurt my back.”While the action hero was flying though

the air his wife phoned Table View police.The thief probably thought he was in the

home straight to freedomwhen hemanagedto shake off the tenacious Dennis, but hehad no idea that the long arm of the lawwould curtail him soon after.Dennis concludes: “Table View copswere

absolutely wonderful! They sent five vansout while they were looking for the Nissan.Half an hour later they found the vehicleagain. If something like this had to happento us in the future, I would go the extramileagain.”

They cycled, they ran, they conquered.This TableView couple is fitness person-

ified. Annie and Mark Lemmon recentlyreturned from Switzerland after excellingin the Duathlon World Championships.

Annie (who’s real age is 26 and ID ageis 52) and Mark (who’s ID tells him he’s 46,despite him feeling 22) came third and 13thin their age groups respectively. Their IDage group that is.

The duathlon is for a special brand ofpersonwho reckon they can run 10 km, cy-cle 150 km, and then run again for 30 km.That’s roughly 10 hours of exertion!

“Last year I came fourth andMark came10th. We both took an hour off our timefrom last year,” says the proud Annie.

She attributes this improvement on“harder and better training”.

They train five times aweekwith one an-other or with friends. Depending on theday, a session can last anything betweenone and seven hours.

That’s some serious commitment!When theymet they were both road run-

ners, then they changed to Iron Man, du-athlon and triathlon enthusiasts.

“We discovered it’s a bit easier on thelegs,” she continues.

Her legs must be really happy they areonly used “sparingly” now...

Quite where the couple find the energyto burn so lavishly on kilometres is a mys-tery. “I’m a vegetarian,Mark is ameat-eat-er andwe eat five times a day,” reveals An-nie.TygerBurgerwon’t let it go so easily and

asks what exactly is the secret ingredient.“Love,” she smiles.“Love for life and love for the sport!”She also unsurprisingly adds that disci-

pline plays a key role in their lives.Their sporting career from here on in

For them it isn’t just to compete, but to“chase the time on the clock”.

If Time had any sense it would run a lit-tle faster, because the Lemmons are hot onit’s trail.

Hierdie is ’n verskriklike oulike storiewatdie afgelope langnaweek met ons gebeurhet.

Ekenmyman, SuleenenNickHamman,en ’n groep van ons vriende – Marius enBernie van der Spuy en JC en AndriettePretorius – het die afgelope langnaweekgaan kamp by Kamgab langs die Oranjeri-vier.

Kamgab kan net bereik word met vier-trekvoertuie en is naby Vioolsdrift netvoor die Namibiese grens.

Maandag-laatmiddag kom sit daar skie-lik ’nwedvlugduif op een van die voertuie.

Die kinders,Melt, Jana enKarla van derSpuy, gooi toe dadelik broodkrummels opdie grond en sit ’n bakkie water neer. Dieduif het dadelik af gevlieg en kom eet. Dieduif was baie mak en ons kon sien dit isverskriklik moeg. Ná die duif geëet het,het dit tussen ons begin rondloop en laterop een van die daktente gaan sit.

Toe die son beginwater trek, het die duifonder een van die afdakkies van die dak-tent ingekruip en die hele nag daar ge-slaap.

Die volgende oggend was die duif nogsteeds daar. Die kinders het weer vir dieduif kos en water gegee. Die duif het pro-beer vlieg en het ’n paar keer gesirkel bo-kant ons kampplek, maar toe weer tussenons kom sit. Daar het die duif gebly tot onsgereed was om te ry.

Dis net toe dat ons besluit: hierdie duifgaan ons nie aan sy eie genade oorlaat nie!Ons het die duif in ’n boks gelaai, op dieagterste sitplek van die Land Rover gesit

en so het die duif saammet my enmymangery tot in Springbok.

Daar het ons begin navraag doen en ’nduiweboer opgespoor, maar hy kon onsnie veel help nie. Toe moes die duif maaral die pad Kaap toe waar ons dan sy eie-naar sou gaan soek.

Woensdagoggend begin ek toe my soek-tog na die eienaar. Volgens die nommer opdie duif se ring om sy poot, het ek by dieringmeester in Noordwes uitgekom.Maarongelukkig was die duif nie van hullestreek nie. Sy het my verwys na die ring-meester in Bloemfontein.

Toe ek die letters en nommer vir dieringmeester in Bloemfontein sê, toe sê sydadelik dis ’n duif van die Kaap. Ek kondit nie glo nie. Ons het wraggies die duifhuis toe gebring!

Ek skakel toe dadelik vir Willie van denBerg, die ringmeester van die Kaapsestreek. Hy kon my verseker dat die duifvan die Kaap is.

Vanmiddag (26 September) het Williedie duif by my kom haal en hy gaan noudie eienaar opspoor volgens die nommer.Sodra hy die eienaar opgespoor het, sal hymy al die besonderhede laat kry sodat onsal die mooi foto’s wat ons van die duif ge-neem het, vir die eienaar kan laat kry.

Willie was so dankbaar oor ons helde-daad en sêdismindatmense soveelmoeitedoen met wedvlugduiwe wat verdwaal ofbeseer word. Ek en Nick is net bly ons kondie arme diertjie help.

The City of Cape Town has arranged forpoint duty officers to keep traffic flowingas work on the Koeberg Road section ofphase one commences.

These officerswill be on duty at theKoe-berg/Blaauwberg Road intersection.

Subcouncil 1 chairperson, HeatherBrenner, elaborates: “Following a briefrespite over the past fewweeks frommorethan a year of extremely extreme peak

hour traffic conditions in Table View andenvirons we are once again thrown intothe fray. Mense vasbyt, min dae!

“We are almost there. We are becomingthe place to be.”

She adds that the opening of the Sand-own Link to the R27 has been delayed bythe inclement weather and a constructionworkers’ strike, further exacerbating traf-fic conditions.

A soup spoon in the ear every now andagain and a piece of tie in your mouth, isall part and parcel of the Dinner in theDark experience.

This unique dining experience hostedby non-profit organisation Blind SA, seesthe diner enjoying his three-course mealcompletely blindfolded – an “eye-opening”experience according to many a past testi-mony.

This year, the fifth of its kind, it washosted by the peninsula branch of BlindSA, at the Protea Hotel in Sea Point, thebiggest yet in Cape Town.

“Along with Janneman Britz of ProteaHotel, we started Dinner in the Dark fiveyears ago, with 15 people. Tonight we have115 guests, themost ever and still the eventis growing,” said André Vosloo, chairmanof the branch.

According to Vosloo all funds raised bythis event will be utilised towards assist-ing the blind.

“One of our big projects this year is toassist with the much-needed upgrade ofthe Athlone School for the Blind in Bel-lville South,” he said.

Equipment such as braille machines andcomputer programs for the blind are verycostly and not always provided to learnersby the education department.

A single braille machine for instance willcost a learner R7 000.Sheets with the braillealphabet and SA anthem in braille were pre-sented, anddinershad the opportunity to trytheir hand at braille.

The NSRI Rescue Station in Melkbosstrandwill once again hold its “Enermech Water-weights NSRI Adventure Day” in the Koe-berg Nature Reserve on Saturday 5 October.Gates will open at 10:00 for the public who

want to come and enjoy a day in this amaz-ing reserve right on their doorstep.This is a unique event, because it’s the on-

ly time that members of the public will beable to tour the reserve in their 4x4 vehicles.The 4x4 tour is a four-hour drive that takes

in some of the most breathtaking views ofthe coast and Table Mountain in some of themost pristine areas of the reserve. This is avery popular event so booking is absolutelyessential. The cost is R350 per vehicle.Throughout the day, there will be enter-

tainment, especially for the children whichwill include the usual jumping castles andboere sports. However, this year there willalso be a Soap Box Cart challenge with vari-ous schools competing for prizes.As children are important to NSRI, this

year there will also be a chance to registeryour child with the Missing Children’s

Foundation. Members of the Missing Chil-dren Foundation will be on hand to talk toparents about the work they do and to assistwith registration if needed.Entry to the arena is free and visitors will

be able to hike or cycle the reserve or simplyenjoy something to eat while listening tosome good music. There will be plenty of ex-hibits where one can browse or buy.All proceeds of the day go toward meeting

the operational cost of the NSRI Rescue Sta-tion in Melkbosstrand. The bottleneck of traffic at the intersectionof Blaauwberg Road and Boy de Goede Cir-cle should be the next priority for the Cityof Cape Town.

According to commuter Riaan Rudman,this could be solved by erecting a “no u-turn” sign.

Drivers who use Boy de Goede Circleused to have two intersections to use to geton to Blaauwberg Road and head towardsKoeberg Road.

Now, the eastern intersection has beenclosed off due to the MyCiTi bus lane, so theonly way into Blaauwberg Road is by usingthe western intersection.

The problem arises with people still us-ing the eastern intersection, drive along theone-way of Blaauwberg Road towards thewest and then making a u-turn to head backtowards Koeberg Road.

This causes severe congestion on thewestern intersection, with drivers from alldirections trying to squeeze into two lanes.

Says Rudman: “Irrespective of the poortiming of several of the robots along Blaau-wberg Road, I suspect putting a no-u-turnsign could reduce the traffic problem at thisintersection. After this intersection, the

traffic flow is significantly better.”Brett Herron, mayoral committee mem-

ber for transport for the City of Cape Town,says however, that no u-turn signs will notbe provided as they would have no impact.

“If there was a sign there then any motor-ist who misses a turn at Gie Road (to theeast of Boy de Goede Circle) would have togo all the way to Wood Drive to the west be-fore they can return,” he explains.

Herron has better news for Rudmanwhen he says that plans are afoot to syn-chronise the traffic lights along Blaauw-berg Road.

“Currently the traffic signals are set totheir optimum synchronisation to try to as-sist with traffic congestion, particularly inpeak travel times. The traffic lights will beadjusted when the buses start using thislower portion of Blaauwberg Road,” he ex-plains.

Herron reiterates that the City of CapeTown has implemented the MyCiTi bus sys-tem in an effort to reduce the number of ve-hicles using the roads in this area.

Concludes Herron: “The constructionproject on Blaauwberg Road has been com-pleted. There should also be additional re-lief should once the Sandown Road projectis complete. This road should open duringOctober.”

Traffic squeeze acause for concern

The Milnerton Racecourse section of theTable Bay Nature Reserve postponed it’sSpring Walk to Sunday, 6 October.

It was originally scheduled to take placeon 22 September, but due to the long wee-kend and school holidays it had to be movedto another day.

Throughout the calendar year,specific days weeks or monthsare set out to bring awarenessof one or other issue such asWomen’s Day, 16 Days ofActivism against Women andChildren Abuse, Cancer Dayand Mandela Day, etc.This special awareness period

makes us the public very muchalert to the aims and goals ofthe organisations involved inthese important issues andcampaigns and so reaffirmscommitment to the end result.As I was thinking about this

issue I could not help buthighlight the fact that poorservice delivery is becoming anational plague in some of ourcommunities and how thecitizens who are not receivingservice delivery are being moreviolent and vocal. They arerunning in the streets and actout barbaric scenes on thestate’s property by destroyingmunicipal buildings andequipment.The initial blame is not the

state’s property but the publicservants employed or voted into ensure service delivery.To our honourable state

president who is the custodianand monarch of service deliv-ery for the people of SouthAfrica may I propose that atthe beginning of every year hedeclares that we have a ServiceDelivery Commitment Weekwhereby parliament and allstate department staff advertisethemselves and their roles inservice delivery and pledgecommitment and dedication todeliver service.In that week the public and

state officials can open chan-nels and find each other byintroducing who in eachrespective municipality isresponsible for respectiveservice delivery.This will lead to a better

more dedicated service deliveryto an enlightened public whodemands that service.

“We normally describe ourselvesas quite eclectic.”So says Karyn Stuart, of the

folk rock band, K, Ray and The Bird.“We kind of oscillate between doing quite

folky slash poppy songs, but also, a little bitof blues, quiet folk indie,” she says, addingthat the variety iswhat they love about theirmusic.Vocal harmonies, interesting melodic

lines and the amalgamation of various influ-ences are other characteristics of K, Ray andThe Bird’s sound.Karyn is responsible for bass, vocals, per-

cussion and violin. She is joined in the bandby Gareth Asch on guitar and vocals, MarkCloete on keys, violin and vocals, Raé Swarton keys, saxophone, clarinet and vocals andEmil Terhoven on drums and percussion.Crowded House, 10cc and the Dave Mat-

thewsBand are some of the names that comeup when people try to compare K, Ray andThe Bird’s sound.

Early daysThe band came together before they actu-

ally started. Gareth explains: “We were in afive piece band, and we had one dreadful gigand our drummer actually left us.”“Karyn went to study in Pretoria, proba-

bly because of that gig,” he goes on, adding:“Raé and I started gigging a little bit andwhen Karyn came back from Pretoria, weeventually formed and for the first time itwas K, Ray and The Bird.”The “K” is for Karyn, the “Ray” comes

from Raé and “bird” is Gareth’s childhoodnickname.The band re-released their debut EP,Wait-

ing for Harmony in 2009 as a three-piece,which was followed by their full length al-bum, Rhymes in the Attic in 2011, after theywere joined by Emil and Mark.They are actively busy with performing,

even though they all have full-time jobs. Theband recently returned froma tour to Johan-nesburg and Pretoria and are working to-wards a third album.Before the recent tour, the band had only

ever played in Cape Town and Knysna andKaryn says: “I thinkwewere pleasantly sur-prised by the Joburg audiences, they werevery receptive.”Karyn says fans can expect a little more

Die Hoërskool D.F. Malan het onder die top-tien skole klaargemaak in die eindronde vandie Spur se 2013-hoërskole-bergfietsliga-kompetisie, wat die vorige naweek in Maga-liesburg gehou is.

Sowat 300 van Suid-Afrika, Namibië enZimbabwe se voorste bergfietsryers van 60skole het by die Hoërskool Bekker aan dienasionale eindronde deelgeneem.

D.F. Malan se deelnemers het puik pres-teer. Charl de Lange het ’n 14de plek behaalin die seunsafdeling vir sub-juniors, TimonLouw ’n 20ste posisie in die meisie-afdelingvir sub-juniors enManieLubbe ’nvyfde plekin die jeug-mansafdeling vir 16-jariges met’n tydvan 00:49:45 oor vier rondtes. Emil vanEck het 21ste geëindig in die junior seunsaf-deling.

Die bergfietsspan van Paul Roos Gimnasi-umopStellenboschhet die seunsafdeling vir’n tweede agtereenvolgende jaar gewen.

Die liga word op dieselfde rondtestelsel asdie Olimpiese bergfietskompetisies bedryf,

met die klem daarop om dit toeganklik viralmal te maak wanneer dit kom by die moei-likheidsgraad en die roete se afstande.

Die 4,9 km-baan, wat spesifiek by die Bek-kerskool gebou is vir die eindronde, het nienet die jaers se tegniese vermoëns getoetsnie, maar ook hul krag, spoed, fiksheid enuithouvermoë.

Bergfietsry is hoofsaaklik ’n individuelesport, daarom fokus die puntestelsel opspanbetrokkenheid op skoolvlak en verdiendie eerste 26 jaers in elke wedren punte opgrond van waar hulle eindig.

Volgens Andrew Cronjé van Spur SteakRanches is hulle trots om deel van ’n berg-fiets-ontwikkelingsprogram op skoolvlak tewees. “Ons is baie opgewonde oor hoe die li-ga ontwikkel het – wat getalle sowel as trans-formasie betref.

Sedert die eerste seisoen in 2009, wat 900ryers in 20 wedrenne gehad het, het die ligagegroei tot meer as 7 500 vanjaar,” het hy by-gevoeg.

The team to beat: Fairmont High School u­19 girls’ soccer team is one of the mostconsistent teams on the school’s soccer scene. Started in 1973, the Volvo Ocean Race isthe world’s premier ocean race. It attracts

the best professional sailors, sailing themost technically advanced racing machinesin the world, through the most hostileoceans on the planet. The race route for the2014/15 event will see teams leave Alicantein Spain in October 2014 and head southsome 6 500 nautical miles to Cape Town.

From here, they will race to Abu Dhabi be-fore going to Sanya in China and Aucklandin New Zealand.

The teams will then head around CapeHorn before stopping at Itajai in Brazil andgoing on to Newport, Rhode Island on theeast coast of the United States. They thencross the Atlantic to Lisbon in Portugal be-fore going on to Lorient in France and thento the finish in Gothenburg, Sweden.

provement from before she left for Americaa few months ago.

Marjoeska (24) from Bellville is South Af-rica’s golden girl of track cycling.

Shewent toPennsylvaniawhich is famousfor what is called T-Town, the world’s bestcycling track. The Lehigh County Velo-drome in Trexlertown annually attractssome of the best cyclists in the world.

Learning curve“I learned so much there, the style of cy-

cling is so much faster and more aggressive.I often found myself in a bundle of between15 and 25 cyclists and ended at the back ofthe field in my first few races.

“I adapted quicklyand learned to copewith the style. The experience made me a

better cyclist and I am motivated to traineven harder,” she reflected.

After her first few races she became morecomfortable and soon found herself on nu-merous podium finishes.Maroesjka hasbeen selected to compete at the UCI TrackCycling World Cup from 1 to 3 November inManchester.

Competition“T-town is exactly what I needed. It is

much stiffer competition than here at home.Manchester is going to be a few notchestougher, but I am excited to compete againstthe best in the world.

“I am really chuffed with what I achievedin a short space of time. My goal is to repre-sent my country at the 2016 and 2020 Olym-pic Games. But in order for that to happen,I am going to need the help of sponsors.
