Prompt communication between TableView Neighbourhood Watch (TNW)and the local police ensured that two

robbers were unable to escape with theirloot.Just seconds after they made their escape

from a house in Table View, Jannie Crafford(a member of TNW) saw the “suspicious-looking guys” walking down the street withbags. He followed a hunch and reported it onthe integrated walkie-talkie system.At the same time another member of the

watch, Marcelle Heymans was walking hisdogs in a nearby park.He heard Crafford’s call and immediately

saw the two suspects and reported it as well.According to him, he called out to the two,but they just walked faster.

Heymans saw how the suspects promptlyleft the allegedly stolen property in betweenanother residents’ belongings that werepacked outside the person’s garage.

Riaan Prins, heard both Crafford and Hey-mans report the suspicious activity over theradio and raced to the neighbourhood.A short while later two suspects were ar-

rested for possession of stolen goods after itwas revealed that they burgled Crafford’sneighbour.The stolen goods included a laptop and

clothes.Ryno Roberts, chairperson of TNW, says

this is just one ofmany success stories whenit comes to examples of the communityworking together with the police to safe-

guard the neighbourhood.“These type of stories are exactly why we

have so many members! About 200 of thosein TNWhave radios and about 200 don’t,” heexplains.One week after TygerBurger reported in

the article “Security scrutiny” that a resi-dent suspects the watch to be “heavy-hand-ed” in their efforts toprotect the community,readers have once again been reminded thatthose who voluntarily sacrifice their timefor others do indeed play an invaluable role.Spokesperson for Table View police, Lt

ElizabethMunro, raves about thework doneby the watch. “We are 110 % happy with thewatch and work very well with them. Wecannot do our job without support from thecommunity. They are our eyes and ears!”she exclaims.The community policing forum spokes-

person, Andrew Brace, also doesn’t shyaway of admitting that the watch lies veryclose to his heart.

SuccessRoberts reckons the secret to their success

and vast numbers (when compared to otherneighbourhood watches) is “information”.Says Roberts: “A few years ago we had a

big increase in crime, so people wanted toget involved. Our Facebook page is also ahuge success. People are kept informedwhat’s going on in their neighbourhood andknowledge is, after all, power.”

. Meanwhile, last week Friday eveningmany TNW members got together and par-ticipated in a Visibility Drive.During the evening a few members were

notified of a housebreaking in the area, andwithin 15minutes the suspect was captured.

Hospital ‘basically ignored me’ANDRÉ BAKKES

Two students who could not afford compre-hensivemedical treatment atNetcareBlaau-wbergHospitalwere left fuming after a “hor-rible” experience at the facility.Tammy Strapp approached TygerBurger

after she andher injured friend, ChazNiena-ber, apparently waited in the hospital fortwo hours on 1 May just to receive a genericpain killer.Netcare Blaawberg Hospital’s manager,

Dirk Truter, however states that theirrecords show the two studentswere there foran hour and 20 minutes.Truter also emphasises: “I offer my abso-

lute assurance that the management and

staff have only the best interest of our pa-tients at heart and that they are committedto caring for our patients with compassion,dignity, respect and appreciation.”Strapp does not feel Nienaber was treated

like this though, as she explains: “An awfulexperience at such a well-known privatehospital, where there were over 20 nurseswalking around doing nothing and a very,very obnoxious doctor made us feel as if wewere being a bother!”Nienaber twisted her foot in the early

hours of the public holiday on 1 May. Sheand Strapp then had no option but to go toNetcare Blaauwerg Hospital.Strapp continues: “On arrival she was

helped with a wheelchair. After 10 minutes

or so (at which this point my friend was inagony) the nurse gracefully came walkingover andmovedus into an assessment room,closed the curtain and said what is wrong?“As we tried to explain she shoved a form

in our hands and demanded we had to fillthemout before anything, she tookher bloodpressure, checked her ears and continued towalk out of the room – not even havingglanced at Che’s foot…”Strapp’s story follows a similar pattern

from here on. One practitioner followed bythe next, and apparently no-one caring oreven lookingatNienaber’s foot or askingherhow she’s doing.Later they were told she would need a few

x-rays, but the students could not afford it.

The doctor recommended that she be takento Somerset Hospital and gave her Mybulin.“I could have gone to Clicks and gotten

this for her, I couldn’t believe this was hap-pening… it felt as if no one in this emergencyward was taking us seriously!” exclaimsStrapp.Truter says that the hospital met the com-

plainants’ expectations by providing painmedication, the doctor needed to ascertainthat the injury was not of a serious nature.“He had to afford the patient an informed

choice and alternative treatment option inthe event that the injury did not improve. Itis documented that the doctor on duty dida full assessment and that pain medicationwas administered within 20 minutes.”

The Community Police Forum (CPF) mem-bers in Parklands and Sunningdale have be-come very active in cleaning up their neigh-bourhoods. Riaan Schoeman, the TableView CPF Sector 2’s environmental co-ordi-nator reports that the next greenbelt clean-up will take place on 8 June. This will be thefourth cleanup to be held in Table View Sec-tor 2.“Our numbers are growing with each

monthly cleanup,” he states.“But we still need as much help as possi-

ble. We have a huge crime problem in theTableView area. Our police service is vastlyunderstaffed, hence the establishment of theneighbourhood watch. Although not every-one can patrol our streets every day, eachperson canmake a difference to our commu-nity by taking part in these cleanups.”He continues: “Thebrokenwindow theory

teaches us that all gang related crimes tak-ing over our neighbourhoods start with thelittering of our streets, parks and greenbelts.If people see that ourneighbourhoods are lit-tered, it sends them the message that we donot care and so the downward spiral starts.We need to show the criminals we do care.”

What does a zebra do when it has problemswith his teeth?It goes to the dentist, of course, or rather,

in this case, the dentist goes to the zebra.This week Jurina Le Roux (environmentalofficer atKoebergNatureReserve) called inwildlife veterinarian Dr JC Botha and den-tist Dr Riana Rabe from Intercare Blaauw-berg to attend to one of their zebra stallions.It had got into a fight with another zebra

stallion, and sustained injuries to its legand jaw.It tookalmost anhour to get the zebra cor-

nered, so that it could be darted with an an-aesthetic, but after Botha took his first shotat delivering the anaesthetic, it took amere

fiveminutes before the zebrawas complete-ly unconscious and ready for the team tobegin their medical treatment.WhileBothaattended to its hind leg,Rabe

extracted three broken teeth and pieces ofthe broken jaw.“The teeth were enormous,” Rabe says

before continuing, “And it needed a veryfirm grip and quite a bit of force to removethem! Botha inserted several sutures to en-sure a good wound closure. All and all, aninteresting day out of the office!” After eve-rything was sorted, the zebra was given a“wake-up” injection and it trotted off, com-pletely unaware of the team effort it hadtaken to fix it up.

EERSTE AANVULLENDEWAARDASIELYS TOT DIE 2012- ALGEMENEWAARDASIELYS (SV01), VIR DIE 2013/2014-BOEKJAARIngevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(i) van die Wet op Plaaslike Regering: Munisipale Eiendomsbelasting (Wet 6 of 2004), hierna die “Wet” genoem, worddaar hiermee kennis gegee dat die eerste aanvullende waardasielys van die 2012- algemene waardasielys (SV01) vir die 2013/2014-boekjaar virdie publiek by die lokale hieronder ter insae lê vanaf 21 Mei 2013 tot 30 Junie 2013. Die vorms vir die indiening van besware is by hierdie lokalebeskikbaar. Die waardasielys is ook vanaf 21 Mei 2013 op die Raad se webwerf beskikbaar (adres hieronder).

Eiendomme word ingevolge artikel 78(1) van die Wet op die eerste aanvullende waardasielys van die 2012- algemene waardasielys (SV01)geplaas indien dit: a) foutiewelik uit die waardasielys gelaat is; b) na die laaste algemene waardasie by die munisipaliteit ingesluit is; c) na dielaaste algemene waardasie onderverdeel of gekonsolideer is; d) ‘n wesenlike toename of vermindering in markwaarde ondergaan het sedertdie laaste algemene waardasie; e) in die laaste algemene waardasie aansienlik verkeerd gewaardeer is; f) om enige ander buitengewone redeherwaardeer moet word; g) waarvan die kategorie verander het.

Ingevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(ii) van die Wet kan enige eiendomsbesitter of ander persoon wat wil, binne die gemelde tydperk ’n beswaar bydie munisipale bestuurder indien oor enige saak wat op die waardasielys verskyn of daaruit weggelaat is. Besware kan slegs ten opsigte vaneiendomme wat op die SV01-lys gewaardeer is, ingedien word. Die eienaars van hierdie eiendomme sal skriftelik van hul SV01-waardasies inkennis gestel word via die posadres wat tans op die Stad se databasis is.

Aandag word spesifiek gevestig op die feit dat ‘n beswaar ingevolge artikel 50(2) van die Wet met ‘n spesifieke, individuele eiendom verbandmoet hou en nie teen die aanvullende waardasielys as ’n geheel ingedien kan word nie. Die vorms vir die indiening van besware is by die lokalehieronder genoem beskikbaar en kan van die webwerf afgelaai word. ‘n Afsonderlike beswaarvorm moet vir elke eiendom ingevul word.

cidents and incidents of pedestrian fatali-ties, making it an ideal candidate for a roadsafety intervention.The latestWorldHealthOrganisationGlo-

bal Status Report on Road Safety indicatesthat pedestrians account for around 39 % ofdeaths by Road User category in South Afri-ca. Almost 14 % of the pedestrian fatalities

were between the school-going ages of fiveto 19 years.This specific programme takes the form of

a road safety education programme, aimedat children in Grades 1 to 4. The teachers ofthese grades receive training onhow to facil-itate the programmeas part of the school syl-labus; this training is conducted by the De-partment of Community Safety: DirectorateRoad Safety Management.“Chevron realises that road safety is a

I would like to ask Big Con-certs one very strange ques-tion: We were at the CT JustinBieber Concert with my10-year-old daughter whoidolises him. We were ingeneral standing. Why did theynot zoom in onto the starduring the entire show. Notonce could we see this super-star upfront. Why put upscreens if you are not going touse them? My 10-year-old wasso disappointed that she wasnot able to see JB. Had Iknown this we would havebought seated tickets. think that I will be sharing a stage with theabsolute world-famous, Barbra Streisand,”Ivan says.“I think that it will only become reality,

once I am there and it is happening,” headds.When TygerBurger last spoke to Ivan in

February last year, he was getting ready tovisit Israel.“When I came back from Israel, I said eve-

ry Christianmust go to Israel at least once,”he says. “In South Africa, we have a com-fortable gospel,” he says, explaining that itis much easier to be a Christian here, thanit is in countries like Israel.Ivan travelled to Jerusalem to address

dignitaries as part of a team mandated toask for repentance on behalf of South Afri-ca. He addressed the dignitaries and per-formed prophetic songs, meant to encour-age the Christians of Jerusalem.Since then, Ivan says he has been busy

with community work. “My heart lies incommunity upliftment,” he explains brief-ly.

He uses his music to inspire people. “Asa person, I am very passionate and I like toinspire, so that’s what you’d get from mymusic,” he says.Ivan has also recently released a book, ti-

tled, Releasing the Prophetic Abundance inyour Life.
