DELFT: MAKING SAFETY A PRIORITY
Taking to the streetsASTRID FEBRUARIE
@febastrid
Delft residents are urged to make safetytheir priority as there has been an in-crease in certain crime categories.
This comes after the Blue Downs policecluster and neighbourhood watches in thecommunity took to the streets to engagewiththe community in crime hotspot areas. The walkabout occurred on Saturday 16
April.Acting station commander Colonel Lu-
yanda Damoyi says they saw it necessarythat they take the walk as there has been anincrease in certain crime categories over thelast two weeks.“This walkabout is not only aboutmaking
people aware of their own safety, but toshare with them tips and information aboutcrime in the community and what role theyplay in making sure they look after theirown safety and property,” he says.“We take the streets back. We walk where
the crime is prevalent – especially gangster-ism, hijackings and house robberies.”
Gates, doors unlockedThe walkabout started at Delft Police Sta-
tion where neighbourhood watch membersandpolice officerswere briefed onwhat theymay encounter andwhat to look out for, butto engage with the community as well.“It was important for us to engage with
them as they we picked up many of thecrimes reported are due to negligence on the
residents’ part. We have found many gatesand doors unlocked which create the oppor-tunity for someone to break in,” Damoyisays. He adds the lack of not securing or locking
these gates contributed to an increase inhouse robberies.“During the walk we found that people
simply respond to a knock on the door with‘come in’ and they were shocked when theysaw it was the police,” he says.He explains that the same happens when
perpetrators pounce on houses they intendto rob and therefore requested that resi-dents be more safety conscious. When it comes to hijackings, Damoyi ex-
plains that alcohol plays a big role in peoplebeing negligent with their cars, especially
when they are leaving a party and are notcompletely at their wits.“They make themselves vulnerable and
create the opportunity to become a victim ofhijacking. Always be vigilant, no matterwhere. You do not know who is watchingandwhat they are capable of doing,” he says.During the walkabout which lasted until
about 04:00, the police and neighbourhoodwatch personnel stopped and searched sev-eral suspects along the route.Captain JoeWilson, spokesperson of Delft
police, says during the early hours of the op-eration they handed out safety pamphletsand focussed on residents with safety gateswhich stood open and were not locked.

operasie verlede week vir die derde keeruitgestel was by die Tygerberg-hospitaalhet sy by ’n bestuurder gaan kla.“Wat sou jy doen as dit jou kind was
Hy ken nie my finansiële situasienie.”

September 2014 elke Maandag omte brei. Elna praat saam. “Die wol is ’n
probleem. Ons kan nie grondvat
nie.

tor these conflicts, but with that the crimeis then displaced in the process making itdifficult to monitor all situations at once.We are, however, on the ground daily tomonitor and patrol these crime hotspots,”he said.Swart says since increasing visibility the
atmosphere in certain crime hotspots haschanged.“We notice when we are patrolling a hot-
spot area where there is gang conflict, theconflict decreases and we will continue tobe visible and in the faces of these gang-sters,” he says.Graham Lindhorst, chairperson of the
CPF, said that residents and the communityleaders are all concerned about the ongoinggangviolence, murders, attemptedmurdersand armed robberies.“Since January up to now there has been
21 murders in the precinct and 17 of thosemurders occurred in Bonteheuwel. This is
of great concern tous asmany innocent peo-ple are coming into the line of fire and livingin fear,” he says.Lindhorst said that in January the CPF,
community leaders and Charl Kitching, whoheads theCity of CapeTown’s drug andgang units, held a meeting to discuss theway forward, clamping down on the crimein the community.“The plans are heeding results, but more
needs to be done with regard to the seriousviolent crime and how we as communityleaders can deal with it,” he said.Lindhorst said while there are figures
available for howmanymurders have beencommitted, many people still do not reportattempted murders as the fear they may be-come a target.“As leaders in this community we need
to find away to get people to trust the policeand to report serious violent crimes so thatwe know exactly where to focus the resour-ces,” he urged.Kitching saidalthough it is impossible for
the unit to have operations every day, theyhave had many successes.“We receive a lot of information from the
public which leads us to perpetrators ofcrime and havemade several arrests. We donot have the capacity to be everywherethere is conflict but with our plans in placewe are heeding good results,” he said.Kitching said so far they have conducted
32 operations in Bonteheuwel alone andwill continue to monitor, patrol and workwith the police in the community to help de-crease conflict and crime.“We will continue to support the police,
neighbourhood watches and the communi-ty policing forum as we go forward in exe-cuting our operational plans,” he added.

The Ravensmead Community Policing Fo-rum and parents who have lost their chil-dren due to gang violence or shootings, pick-eted before the Bellville Magistrate’s Courtlast week. This as former Vereeniging police officer
Colonel Christiaan Lodewyk Prinsloo ap-peared in court onvarious chargeswhich in-clude murder and racketeering. The vice chairperson of the CPF, Johan-
nes Bastian, explains that Prinsloo was incontrol of the police armoury and stands ac-cused of stealing firearms destined for de-struction.“He also stands accused of allegedly sup-
plying the weapons to gangs in the WesternCape, fuelling gang wars from 2007 on-wards,” Bastian says.He says they held the picket to highlight
the problemof firearms in their community.“We have seen many reports of murders
and attempted murders and children in-jured or killed in shootings and it is hard forthem to overcome this. We want them to
know that we are serious about getting theguns off the streets,” Bastian says.He explained that normally when there is
onemurder inayear it is a shock to them, butwith the increase in the last two years ur-gent action needs to be taken to get firearmsoff the streets.“We also need the community to stand up
and speak up about the crime and to reportthose in possession of illegal firearms andammunition. If we continue to be silent wewill always seebloodon the streets,”Bastiansays.TheCPFalso handed over amemorandum
to senior prosecutor Shareen Riley who waspresent when Prinsloo appeared.Bastian says the memorandum states the
CPF requests bail be revoked for Prinsloo.Charges against the accused have far-reach-ing consequences for all communities andthe entre country, and have fomented gangwarfare and the maiming of the innocent.“We also call all accused within the juris-
diction of the Ravensmead Police Stationshould be denied bail if charged with mur-der, attempted murder, possession, robberyand being a gangster,” he says.

“It is not aboutwhat you can’t do, but rath-er what you are able to.”These are the wise words of 12-year-old
Joel Greek from Kuils River who recentlywon the Lions Club’s International EssayContest.Hewas invited toNewYork to accept his
award.“I never thought I would find myself in
America of all places and to have my writ-ing get me there,” he says. What is truly special about Joel that de-
spite being partially blind he never feelssorry for himself or allows other to lookdown at him.“My disability does not make me who I
am, but rather makes me feel unique andspecial. I have not let it get in my way ofmy goals or dreams. It is part of me, butit isn’t me,” he says.Joel attends the Althone School for the
Blind in Glenhaven where he is in Grade7, but wrote his winning essay under thetheme “Share Peace” while in Grade 6.“When I entered the competition, I
thought about the things that inspired meand how far we have come as South Afri-cans.“We have made bold moves and have
strived for greater things and all becausewe have hope andwe have a common goal, peace,” he says.Joel says his mother, Inge, plays a vital
role in the confidence he has built over theyears and she always pushes him to reachhis personal goals.“Mymom is amazing and so supportive;
there is not a day that goes by without hertelling me how proud she is of my accom-plishments and how proud she is of whatI am capable of. She is my inspiration,” he
says.Although he was in a mainstream
school about two years ago, Joel says en-rolling in the Athlone School for theBlind was a good decision as the schooloffers great support due to his eye sight.“I enjoyedmainstream school and it’s
not really different of where I am now, except for the fact that the school spe-cialises in supporting learners with vi-sual impairments,” he says.Joel hopes to one day become a great
historian or an herpetologist.“Many people do not know, but I love
animals – especially amphibians, whichinclude frogs, toads, snakes and lizards. That is why I would like to become aherpetologist, but who knows – any-thing is possible.”Joel now joins a group of five past
grand prize winners from around theworld since the International EssayContest began in 2010.

“When I was pregnant I alwaysknew that this was a great per-son I was carrying.”
These are thewords of a proudKuils Rivermother who recently accompanied her par-tially blind son to America where he re-ceived an award at the United Nations head-quarters in New York after winning the Li-on’s Club International 2015/2016 EssayContest – an opportunity she might neverhave experienced had it not been for herhard working son, the mother says.Inge Greek, a single mother of Iris Street
in Sarepta, Kuils River, is the mother of 12-year-old Joel Greek who has featured inmany newspaper articles following his trip
to America.Joel, a Grade 7 learner at the Athlone
School for the Blind in Bellville South, en-tered his essay themed “Share Peace” intothe competition. His entry has since then opened many
doors and is continuing to do so, the mothersays. The partially blind boy, who has a passion
for history and astronomy, and his motherare now packing their bags for the Far Eastwhere he will once again be honoured at aconvention hosted by the Lion’s Club. Theywill be jetting off to Fukuoko, Japan, on 24June this year to attend the 99Annual Lion’sInternational Convention – something bothof them are looking forward to.“Neither of us flew in an aeroplane before
our trip to America. It was a first for bothof us,” Inge says excitingly.Asked about her son and
what he is like, Inge de-scribed Joel as a very proact-ive child, and someone whohas always been hard work-ing.“He always had good role
models. He loves history andto learn about people whohad to break free from theircircumstances.“I always knew he himself
is destined for greatness ... Ijust did not know itwould allhappen so soon,” Inge says. She says she hopes her son
will some day grow up to behis own person; to make hisown mistakes and learnfromthemandnot repeat themistakes made by others.
Joel’s mother saysshe ‘always knew’
Inge Greek, mother of Joel Greek, says she is extremely proudof her boy’s achievement and knows that one day he will besuccessful in whatever he decides to do with his life.

Just months after stepping outas a solo artist, BellvilleSouth’s Lauren-Lee Bock has
already successfully pulled off herfirst international performance. The pint-sized singer recently re-
turned from the United Kingdomwhere she managed to raise justover R100 000 for the victims of ahuge flood that devastated the En-glish community of Kendal latelast year.Lauren’s two charity concerts in
the Kendal Town Hall and LeisureCentre in March were the brain-child of her manager, David Gum-mers, after experiencing the effectsof the flood first hand. When he first suggested the
fundraising concert, Lauren’s firstresponse was: “Are you sure youcan pull this off?”
PlanningWith less than four months to
plan, David and Lauren arrangedsponsorship to fly Lauren and agroup of backing musicians to En-gland.They also put together an exten-
sive list of raffle prizes, includinga car anddonations to be auctionedoff at the concerts.Lauren was joined on stage by
Peter Booi, Winston Siljeur, RochêEuropa and Haydn Marc vanRheede.“I took our local music to Kend-
al,” Lauren says of her performan-ces, adding that as a proud SouthAfrican, itwas important for her to
represent her country well. Sheeven included Miriam Makeba’siconic “Pata Pata” as well as atrack from a more modern diva,Can Skylark, in her programme. One of the two English songs sheincluded was The Beatles’ “Let itBe”.“I made every single person in
the audience sing along.”Since TygerBurger last spoke to
Lauren in earlyDecember 2015, thepint-sized singer has been continu-ing her duties as the singer for theWinston Siljeur Project. She’s alsobeen working with vocal coachAmanda Luyt and says she’s no-
ticed a marked improvement inher voice.Earlier this year Lauren became
one of three artists chosen to be apart of Can Skylark’s The Motive. The initiative sees Can providingthree up-and-coming artists with aspringboard to take on the local in-dustry.Lauren, along with Earl Deetlefs
and Lesley Dicxon, took part in aseries of workshops presented bymusic industry professionals overthe course of six weeks that dealtwith subjects like publishing, branding, performance and songwriting.
The programmealso sawLaurendo a photoshoot for promotionalshots and later in the year they’llput on a full-scale production.“I’ve been learning so much; I
feel honoured to be a part of it.”The extra support comes at the
perfect time for Lauren, who hasjust quit her job as a teacher aftersigning a full-time contract withDavid to allow her to focus solelyon her music career, which is justas well, because the two alreadyhave a few goals in mind.Ultimately, Lauren wants to be-
come one of the country’s more es-tablished artists, but quickly adds:“I know it takes hard work.”She isn’t necessarily looking for
fame, but wants to be respected asa singer. “I want to be a versatilemusician.”
Hard workLauren’s hard work will start
with “a few decent collaborations”she’s planning for a big concert inOctober. She is also planning to re-lease her debut single by the end ofthe year.“What we’ve got planned is to
make a few waves in the city,” Da-vid says, coyly, refusing to spillany more beans about their con-cert plans. In the meantime, music fans can
catch her regular performancesaround Cape Town with the Win-ston Siljeur Project.V For more information about Lauren andto keep up to date with her music andshows, “Like” her Facebook page, followher on Twitter and @laurenleebock, or fol-low her on Instagram.

“Ek missie sounds vannie nag ou-pa, ma’ nie vannie bulldozers en-nie guns-zie, ek missie Ses.”Loit Sôls se gedig “Ek missie
Ses” skep ’n prentjievan die lewe in die Dis-trik Ses-era. Terwyldaar beslis negatieweervaringe rondom diétydperk is, was daarook positiewe aspekte.
Hendricks werk hoofsaaklik as

South Africa en Childline, het Wayde Vry-dag dié netwerk se Be a Buddy not a Bully-veldtog van stapel gestuur.
Widespread concerns were raised by resi-dents following the second registrationweekend, prompting the DA to investigate. In a letter sent from the DA head office to
all ward councillors last week, it was statedthat the IEC (Independent Electoral Com-mission) had confirmed that they have notremoved a single voter or information of avoter, from the voters’ roll.According to the IEC a voter who has been
verified and placed on the voters’ roll, can-not be removed without an audit trail indi-cating who removed that voter and the rea-sons for the removal.“Only a voterwhohas applied for de-regis-
tration in terms of section 10 of the ElectoralAct, may be removed completely from thevoters’ roll,” the letter stated.Chaos ensued after an SMS went out from
the IEC to about 5 million voters, requestingvoters to update their address information.Voters became concerned about their sta-
tus on the voters’ roll and this panic in-creased after reports in the mainstreamme-dia when Glen Mashinini, Chairperson ofthe IEC, warned that more than two-thirdsof the voters’ roll could be disenfranchiseddue to the absence of sufficient address in-formation.TygerBurgerwas flooded with complaints
from readers regarding the issue, of whichsome were escalated to ward councillors. In most of these complaints, readers say
their information could not be found on vot-ers’ lists at various voting stations.Carin Brynard, ward councillor for areas
in Brackenfell and Kraaifontein, last weeksaid there was still much uncertaintyaround registration issues and that it was ofthe utmost importance that residents ob-tained the correct information.
Following the events thatunfoldedand theconcerns raised by voters, the DA also re-quested an updated voters’ roll from the IECto ensure accuracy of information containedin the voters’ roll.“The DA undertakes to report and follow
up on all matters of possible corruption orirregularities brought to their attention,”the letter stated.Answers to important questions voters
might have:V I registered during the weekend of
5/6March, butmy information is not up-dated yet?The IEC is currently experiencing a back-
log with the capturing of data. If your infor-mation is still outdated on the IEC websiteplease contact the DA’s call centre on0861 22 55 32 to assist.
V If I did not update my address duringone of the two registrationweekend, willI still be able to vote?
Nobody may be taken off the voters’ role, irrespective of the address or lack of an ad-dress on the voters’ roll. Currently the IEChas confirmed that all people currently onthe voters’ roll will be able to vote on 3 Au-gust. The Constitutional Courtwill on 9Mayhear arguments regarding the addresses ofvoters on the voters’ roll and the impact thatwill have on the validity of the voters’ roll.
V Can I still update my address infor-mation or re-register for the Local Gov-ernment Elections for 2016?If you would like to re-register in a new
voting district or update your information, you may do so by taking your ID documentto your nearest IEC office.
VHow would I know where my newVoting District is?You can check if you are registered in the
correct voting district on www.elec-tions.org.za, or send an SMS with your IDnumber to 32810 or call 0861 22 55 32.

PROFEET ZAKARIAis die oplossing vir ons probleme.
Ek is Julius en ek woon in Somerset-Wes. Die jaar2014 was vir my ’n donker jaar vol hartseer. Ek is
weggejaag by die werk, ek het ’n motorongeluk gehad,my oudste seun het dwelms begin gebruik en my vrouhet my verlaat om met ’n ander man te trou. Toe ek myvriend van my teëspoed vertel, het hy my na ProfeetZakaria geneem, wat vir my van sy medisyne gegeehet om vir ’n week lank te gebruik. Hy het my ook
’n towerring gegee.
My seun het ophou dwelmsgebruik en ek is nou ’n gelukkige man, danksy Profeet
Zakaria.

SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE: WINNER TAKES SECOND VICTORY IN TWO DAYS
In a league of her own
The top three finishers, Rutendo Nyahora (2nd), Irvette van Zyl (winner) and Lebogang Phalula (3rd) after the finish of the SPAR Women’s 10kmChallenge at Green Point. PHOTO: REG CALDECOTT
Fresh from her victory in the 5000m atthe South African Championship inStellenbosch on Friday, Irvette van Zyl
(Nedbank) cruised to victory in the SPARWomen’s 10km Challenge at the Cape TownStadium on Sunday morning, in a time of 33minutes 24 seconds. Teammate Rutendo Ny-ahora was second in 33.52, followed by Lebo-gang Phalula (Boxer) in 34 minutes.A smilingNyahora took the early lead, but
Van Zyl overtook her at about three kilome-tres, and never looked back. Van Zyl, whogave birth to a boy just seven months ago, looked relaxed as she ate up the kilometres.“I wasn’t planning to run fast,” she said.
“My coach told me not to go under 33:20, be-causehedidn’twantme too tired for theLon-don Marathon next Sunday.“I really didn’t expect to win, but every-
thingwentmyway today. My legs are feelingalive again, and I’m very happy at the mo-ment. I’m enjoying my running and I am en-joying motherhood.”Van Zyl was pregnant for much of 2015,
and before that had anumber of injuries, butshe appears to be in the form of her life. Ear-lier this year, she won the Two Oceans halfmarathon, and in fact has not been beatenin 2016.Nyahora said she also enjoyed the race.“Everything went according to plan,” she
said. “I ran a marathon last week, so I knewI would be tired, but I ran better than I ex-pected. Theweather was perfect for runningtoday.”Phalula, the reigning SPAR Grand Prix
champion, said she had also enjoyed therace, although she was tired after runningthe 1500m at the national championships onSaturday.Van Zyl leaves for London on Tuesday,
where she hopes to qualify for themarathon
in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro inAugust.“We’ll see what happens there,” she said.“If I don’t make it, I’ll try to qualify in one
of the track events.”Phalula is heading for Port Elizabeth,
where shewill run in the 1500 and 5000metreevents at the Night Series meeting on Tues-day, hoping to qualify for the Olympics. Hertwin sister, Diana-Lebo, missed the CapeTown race because she was running amara-thon in theNetherlands, also aiming to qual-ify for Rio.
A record entry of 27 532 runners took partin the 10km race and the 5km Fun Run.In a new innovation, the six women who
have won the SPAR Grand Prix are all men-toring promising junior runners.Rene Kalmer, who has won more Chal-
lenge titles than any other runner, said shewas happy to be mentoring a younger run-ner.“I chose Chery-Lee Schoeman, because
she is at the school I used to teach at, andbecause I thinkshehasagreat future. I thinkit is working well, and I predict great things
for her.”Chery-Lee, who was first junior home in
several 10km races last year, said she waslearning a lot from Kalmer.“We don’t actually train together, but she
is always ready to giveme advice and to helpme if I have a problem,” she said.TheCapeTownChallenge is the first in the
five-race SPARChallenge series. The secondrace is in Port Elizabeth on May 5, to be fol-lowed in June by the Durban race. The Pre-toria Challenge will be run in September, and the Johannesburg race in October.
