The Station Road precinct in Parow nowhas walls adorned with four larger-than-life artworks.
The murals were initiated by the GreaterTygerberg Partnership (GTP) as the Art inAction project and conceptualised by cele-brated street artists, three of these workswere painted by the artists themselves andthe fourth by members of the public.“We had quite a few people who joined in
with the painting since we started on Friday(21 August),” said artist Jeremy Puren fromSee Saw Do projects in Woodstock about thecommunity effort.He said most of the people who came to
help were made aware of the projectthrough mailing lists and Facebook posts.Passersby on the street seemed hesitant tojoin in though. But their curiosity and admi-ration were plain to see. Several stopped tolook, nodding and smiling encouragingly atthose who were balanced on ladders, palettein the one hand and paint brush or roller in
the other.“This is awesome. It is good for the com-
munity. It means someone cares,” one manremarked.Xanele Puren says she and Jeremywalked
around Station Road for inspiration beforeshe made the design.“We decided to do something that people
around here can relate to, hence the generalmarket theme,” she says.This community participation artwork on
the corner of Station and Victoria Road wascompleted on 23 August.
According to Jonita Pasjar of theGTP, onemore painting needs to be done as part of theArt in Action initiative.“For this we will need a collaboration of
artists, as this is a really big wall.“The project has been very successful so
far. Thewhole aimwas to add to the commu-nity and we feel we have achieved this. Re-sponse from the public and business ownerswere very positive and we will do it again.Wehave already put theBellville CBD in ourbusiness plan for the new financial year,”she said.

AGroenvallei woman and her allegeddruglord partner were arrested du-ring a sting operation by the Bracken-
fell police’s crime intelligence unit onThursday.
Bellville police’s own crime intelligenceunit has launched numerous raids on thehouseKingsleyUkatu (38) sharedwithMan-dy Williams (38) and two of her three chil-dren.
Over a period of more than four years andseveral raids later, police were never ableto find any drugs in the house, said Groen-vallei Neighbourhood Watch vice-chairper-son Criselda Greyling.
“It took the Brackenfell police twomonths to capture them. Every time a raidwas planned for that house, you would seeno druggy on the streets. They knew. We al-ways said they were tipped off beforehand,”she said.
A combined force, including a canineunitfrom Maitland and two other specialisedunits, swooped on the home on Thursday atabout 21:30
Williams spoke to TygerBurger on Mon-day, after her court appearance.
She said she and Ukatu had been togetherfor eight years, five of which were spent inthe home where they were arrested on char-ges of dealing in drugs and having at leastR15 500 in suspected stolen goods on the pre-mises.
According to the Brackenfell policespokesperson Erica Crous, an electronicscale and several zip-lock bags, as well ascash and foreign currency, television sets,a gas heater and various tools were confis-cated during the raid.
Williams claimed some of the items as herown property.
“I bought that television. They say I stole
goods,but there is the box of thecontract cellphone I bought,” shesaid, showing TygerBurger a boxwith a courier’s waybill envelopestill attached.
“My kids and I are staying on inGroenvallei. I refuse to move out.Kingsley won’t be coming back he-re. My kids and I will be makinga clean slate,” she said.
“I am a mother and I have inte-grity. I will show this judgmentalcommunity that I will not falldown,” she said. “I’m from goodstock, they don’t know me or whe-re I’m from or who I am.
“It is in this community that mychildren and I have been referredto as ‘k–rs’. They are racist. Howwould you feel if your 12-year-oldcomes running home, crying, be-cause children called him a ‘k–r’?”she said. “What I do, I do for mykids,” she said.
Williams confirmed she is “ac-cused number one”, but denied that anycharges had been brought against Ukatu.“All the charges are against me alone,” shesaid.
However, the Bellville police on Tuesdayconfirmed both she and Ukatu would appe-ar on the mentioned charges.
According to Bellville police spokesper-sonCaptainFienieNimb,Ukatuwill appearin the Bellville Magistrate’s Court again onFriday.
“Ukatu’s appearance was hampered bythe fact he had no legal documentation tobe in the country. On Friday he must produ-ce the necessary documentation.
“According to our information his pas-sport has expired. The accused says he hasapplied to have his passport renewed. OnFriday he will have to prove this to the ma-gistrate or be deemed illegal in the coun-
try,” she said.In previous articles written by TygerBur-
ger since 2011, there has been a steadystream of unknown people frequenting thecouple’s home in Groenvallei.
The neighbourhood watch alleges thestrollers and visitors are mostly drug ad-dicts and a constant source of irritation toresidents.
“They only ever disappeared when therewas a police raid coming,” said Greyling.
She and watch secretary Petro Neethlingand watch member Patsy Barnardo said onMonday that they welcomed the arrests.
“You have no idea how quiet it’s beenaround here since Thursday,” Neethlingsaid.
Neethling added: “The communitywill gi-ve her another chance. But she’s going tohave to prove herself.”

A tip-off from the Parow communityled to the arrest of two women oncharges of possession of various
drugs in Tyger Valley Street.“On 14 August, around 09:30, the Pa-
row Crime Prevention Unit received thecall and immediately responded,” saysLieutenant KevinWilliams of the Parowpolice.At the premises, they found two un-
known women standing near an OpelCorsa.According to Williams, Constable Al-
ton Marcus searched the vehicle. Uponopening the boot, he discovered an un-
disclosed amount of cash and the drugs,which includedmore than ten packets oftik, mandrax, dagga and tik lollies.“The suspects could not explain the
presence of the drugs in the vehicle. Onewoman said that she brought the vehicleto the other, but will not take responsibi-lity for the drugs in the vehicle,” Willi-ams says.Both women were arrested and made
their first appearance in the BellvilleMagistrate’s court on 17 August.“The Parow police wishes to thank the

An innovative group of recyclers are col-lecting, sorting and repurposing oldand unwanted household items not fit
for resale.Noel Ehrenreich and partner Justin Hur-
ling started New Earth Recycling two yearsago to create jobs and reduce waste.“We offer a free collection and recycling
service of broken and unwanted ‘white ele-phant’ goods and furniture,” said Noel.The duo launched their “residential collec-
tion campaign” in Durbanville in April.The campaign has been bearing fruit, said
Noel. So much so they are now expanding in-to Bellville and beyond.Their team has joined forces with a well-
known high-end furnishing company andthrough the campaign are donating part oftheir earnings to needy schools.“Wehavea sorting,materials recoveryand
refurbishment facility in Parow Industriawhere our teamrecycle all goods collected in-to different recyclable streams,” said Noel.The itemsare theneitherusedas rawmate-
rial for other manufacturing processes, orturned into refurbished units.The teamare accredited by theCity ofCape
Town, he said.“People whowish to refurbish their homes
and get rid of old furniture, appliances or
bric-a-brac can contact us to recycle thesegoods,” said Noel.They also have a competition in which le-
arners can submit a drawing or article andwin an iPad or digital camera, as well as anappliance discount voucher from the furnis-her.“We have been approaching schools in the
area to participate in the initiative,” saidNoel.“The feedback from participating house-
holds has been extremely positive. They con-sider our service very convenient, professio-nal and for a good cause.He said his company has created three jobs
so far and will be employing more people asthe campaign grows.“We will eventually create ‘virtual’ bins
for all the districts in Cape Town and keepa record of the volume collected, the numberof organisations benefiting, employment cre-ated, and so forth,” he said.Collection days are currently on Wednes-

There seem to be quite a fewunfortunate dog attacksreported lately: dog vs dog,human vs dog, etc. The com-mon denominator here is atleast one dog off a leash. Comeon people, it’s not that difficult.Put your dog on a lead. I havedogs and I’m a huge dog loverbut would never walk them offleash.
My daughter was bitten bya dog belonging to an idiotdown the road and is emotio-nally scarred to the pointwhere she is now terrified ofstrange dogs. His dog continuesto roam the street unattended.The incident was reported, hewas warned, yet there has beenno change and the damage hasbeen done to my child.
I don’t blame the dog, Iblame the owner but willcertainly not hesitate to protectmyself or my children, by anymeans possible should any dogoff leash approach us in anagressive fashion. Would I alsobe charged with animalcruelty?

I couldn’t agree more withElaine Soutar (“Kinders hard-loop steeds oor paaie”,TB, 12August). My husband and Itravel to work every morningin the Brackenfell industrialarea. Cars park on the pave-ments and pedestrians areforced to walk in the road.Ninety-nine percent of the timethey are wearing dark clothingand are just not easily seen.
It should become a require-ment for pedestrians (adultsand children) to wear someform of reflective clothing,especially on dark and wetwinter mornings. Even one ofthose sleeveless green luminousbib type vests would do thetrick.
We saw a pedestrian with awhite rain suit, which is a goodidea. It is not always thedrivers’ fault. Pedestrians anddrivers need to work togetherfor safety.

The Health Forum will include stakehol-ders from both public and private sectorsand will provide members a chance to net-work and voice key issues they are facing,states the GTP.
It will also be an opportunity to develop in-novative solutions for the health care sector,
meeting once per quarter.“The first Health Forum meeting will in-
troduce the GTP and identify the role theGTP can play in facilitating improved healthcare in the region.
“It will also be discussing two projects theGTP has underway, namely the TygerbergIntegrated Medical Portal and the TygerbergMedical Cluster Business Retention and Ex-pansion programme,” states the GTP.

Artistic Director Ismail Mahomed saysthe Cape Town Fringe was developing itsown artistic fingerprint – that of an eng-aged, original, and socially aware pro-gramme.
“It demonstrates how independent ar-tists and arts companies are passionatelyengaging with the world around them andbringing that experience to their work,”Mahomed said, adding thatmore producti-ons are likely be added in the comingweeks as contractual and other discussi-ons are concluded.
While the programme comprises mostlytheatre, dance, performance art, physicaltheatre, music, family theatre and magicwill round off the 11-day festival.
This year’s line-up aims to offer a widechoice, ensuring that the Fringe matchesthevibrancyandcreativity of otherFringeFestivals worldwide.

An 83-year-old woman has one wish be-fore she departs this world – shewants to meet her son who was taken
from her a day after she gave birth to him.Betty Maritz says her heart’s desire is to
meet her only child who should be 64-years-old this year. Maritz tells her heart-wren-ching story with desperate longing, sayingshe will only feel better once they reunite.“I was 19 when I fell pregnant. At the time
I lived with a woman in Retreat who tookme in as her own daughter. She eventuallynoticed I was pregnant. I was already in mysecond trimester,” she says.“She asked who the father was and I told
her. I suggested the guy come meet her aswell but she did not want to hear anythingof it. Not long after, the father of my childdid not contact me anymore,” Maritz says.She says on the day she gave birth she re-
members a midwife assisting with her deli-very at home. “After giving birth I was sotired and exhausted. All I know is I gavebirth to a boy who had a distinct birthmarkonhis back. After the birth Iwas exhausted,
my guardian mother said we could go thenext day to give my child’s details at the cli-nic,” she recalls.She says the nextmorning shewaswoken
up and told to wash her baby as well as hisclothes.“My guardian then offered to take my ba-

I couldn’t be-lieve it and I kept askingherwheremychildwas, but she gave me the same responseeach time. I just want my childback,” Maritz cries.She has since moved to Parkwood. “I feel
like I was robbed of being a mother. My sonmight be out there thinking I abandonedhim, but I just want to see him so I can tellhim that is not what happened.”

(JASA) has launched a new platformto enable citizens to take action
against corruption wherever it rears itshead.
“Expose Ituses reports of bribery and cor-ruption collected on its website and USSDphone app to fight corruption on every levelwithin public service organisations, inclu-ding government departments, politicalparties and parastatals,” said director JohnSmyth at last week’s launch.
As a socially driven movement, Expose Itrelies on citizen reports.
“The more incidents reported, the morehotspots are exposed for our legal team toknow exactly where to take action,” saidSmythe.
The reporting process is simple, free anduser friendly, making Expose It open andaccessible to all members of the South Afri-can public on a mobile friendly website(http://www.ExposeIt.org.za) or even onold cell phones without internet access bydialing the free USSD number *134*1105#.
“Incidents of corruption can be safelyand anonymously reported – from bribery,back-handed deals and bullying to abuse ofpower,” said Smythe.
“Unlike many other corruption organisa-tions,Expose It’s legal team of experts is de-dicated to taking legal action and acting onhotspots exposed by public reports on ourplatform. Through JASA, we have the sup-port of the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, theNational Prosecuting Authority and PublicProtector to help ensure cases are prosecu-ted whenever there is appropriate eviden-ce.”
To spread the word and galvanise sup-port, Expose It has started a popular onlineprotest by calling on all South Africans tocreate an anti-corruption protest posterand posting it to social media with the hash-tag #exposeit.

La Grange het 19 jaar lank vir Mandela inverskeie hoedanighede gewerk tot sy doodtoe op 5 Desember 2013.
Sy het vroue van oor die noordelike voor-stede heen verlede Vrydag toegespreek oorhaar ervaringe oor amper twee dekades watsy saam met dié ikoon gewerk het.
Die vrouedag-geleentheid was deur dieplaaslike prokureurs De Klerk en Van Gendby Nitida-wyne aangebied ter viering vanVrouemaand.
“Die manier waarop jy enige mens bena-der sal bepaal hoe die persoon jou sal behan-del,” het Madiba altyd gesê.
En dit was juis die benadering tot mensewat Mandela so suksesvol as staatsman ge-maak het.
“Hy het almal om hom respekteer en sy in-tegriteit en eerbaarheid was onmiskenbaar,”sê sy.
Dis veral die staaltjie oor ’n nietige gebeur-tenis op een oorsese besoek wat haar altyd salbybly.
“Madiba het my een laataand erg ontstelduit sy hotelkamer geskakel en beveel om da-delik die destydse polisie-kommissaris, Jac-kie Selebi, in Suid-Afrika te skakel.
“Hy het opgelet dat daar ’n koekie seep uitsy badkamer weg was, wat heel moontlik deureen van sy persoonlike sekerheidspersoneel-lede gesteel is,” vertel La Grange.
Sy verduidelik: “Madiba het altyd sy eie toi-letbenodighede gepak en gebruik ten spytevan die feit dat die hotelle waar hy tuisgegaanhet, altyd seker gemaak het dat daar ’n vollereeks van net die beste ontwerpersproduktein sy badkamer vir hom uitgestal is.
Hy het dit egter nooit gebruik of enigiets,saam met hom gevat nie, sê sy.
Op die betrokke aand moes La Grange selfinderhaas as “getuie” optree toe Madiba sypersoneel ingeroep en kastei het oor die ver-
miste badproduk.“Hy het dit aan hulle duidelik gemaak dat
almal hulle werk kwyt sou wees as die itemnie teen die einde van die volgende dag te-rug geplaas word in die badkamer nie.”
Nodeloos om te sê, het die verlore sepievinnig sy pad teruggevind na Madiba sebadkamer.
En wanneer hy die hotel na sy besoek ver-laat het, het hy nooit nagelaat om die be-stuur te bedank vir die luukse produktenie. “Baie dankie vir u gasvryheid, maarek het my eie goed saamgebring,” het hy al-tyd gesê.
Vir Mandela was daar nie ’n grys gebiedas dit kom by eerlikheid nie, sê sy.
Madiba het vas daaraan geglo dat ditmakliker is om jouself te verander, eerderas ander mense.
“Hy het altyd gesê dat ons ’n gebroke sa-melewing kan verander deur ons eie gedragte verander.”
La Grange beskryf Nelson Mandela as ’nkomplekse, hardkoppige, maar baie lojalepersoonlikheid.
Ook die manier waarop hy sy eggenote,Graca Machel, behandel het, het boekdelegespreek.
“Hy het haar met die hoogste respek en be-wondering behandel en in 19 jaar het ek nieeen keer die teendeel gesien nie. Saam methaar was hy werklik gelukkig”.

Chess has becomemuchmore accessibleto Xhosa speaking people since the de-partment of cultural affairs and sport
(DCAS) in conjunction with Watu Kobese,handed over Xhosa chess books, the first oftheir kind, to four schools last week.Kobese spentmore than a year developing
the book, complete with authentic terminol-ogies, creating a new chess language forXhosa speakers.The ceremony, held at Hazendal Primary
School, saw the three other schools (Sopoka-ma Primary School, Masiphumelele Prima-ry School and Nomlinganiselo PrimarySchool) have the books handed over to themby Kobese and DCAS provincial ministerAnroux Marais.Kobese is one of the country’s foremost
chess players. He holds the title of interna-tional master and he has represented SouthAfrica internationally on numerous occa-sions.He started playing chess in 1972 after
learning of the “match of the century” be-tween Bobby Fischer of the United Statesand Boris Spassky of the then Soviet Union.“It (thematch) sparked the imagination of
the whole world and my dad and his friendswere draughts players and they shifted andthen played chess, but what brought me tochess was not the game but the energyaround the game. All the games are very vo-cal with guys making jokes and talking andthat is what I hope this book will achieve,”said Kobese.Kobese then pointed out the impact chess
has had on his life, something he hopes willbecome more common following the distri-bution of this book.“My biggest break came in 1990 when I got
a scholarship to go and study chess in Ger-many. I studied there for three years and aft-
er that I played professionally. In 2001 I wasAfrican champion and I have been SAchamp on six occasions. And I’m still play-ing as a member of the national team.”Kobese identified the need for a Xhosa
book on chess and worked together withDCAS to develop the Xhosa terminology forchess pieces and moves.“Basically the need for the book came
through interaction with various communi-ties and seeing that at a certain age therewas indeed aneed for such a book, especiallywhen you are trying to explain to a six-year-old who has not yet had real exposure to En-glish but is keen (to play chess). I got to thepointwhere Iwas losing the players in termsof their interest when I was simply explain-ing the pieces and the meaning of the pie-ces,” said Kobese.Kobese said although chess has become
standardised after its origins in India (Chat-uranga) in the 15th century, that even withthe European languages, the names of thepieces are not translated directly.“Even within the European languages the
pieces are a reflection of their dynamics.”English is seen as the universal language
in today’s society, but when trying to ex-plain chess in indigenous languages, newwords need to be created in order to makethe game more identifiable to someone notfamiliar with English.“So we have, for example, pieces: the rook
has been translated to a gun, but a big gun.Bishop is a spy in Xhosa and even the nameof chess has been changed or reinvented andis called intimba (check mate).”Kobese thanked DCAS and Advocate Lyn-
don Bouah, chief director of sport and recre-ation at DCAS in particular for helping tomake the book a reality.Bouah in turn thanked Kobese for coming
forward with this initiative and hoped itwould serve as a platform for the buddingchess masters of tomorrow.
The handing out of the first Xhosa chess book will enable a new generation of chess players tolearn the game in their mother tongue.

With less than 30 days to go to one ofAfrica’s most prestigious road ra-ces, the Sanlam Cape Town Mara-
thon organisers are gearing up to present aspectacular eventwhen they host the secondedition of the relaunched running festivalon 20 September.
Havingmade anumber of announcementswith 60 days to go, the organisers are pleasedto reveal further information in relation tothis year’s event, as they aim to make histo-ry by becoming the first race in SouthAfricato achieve IAAF Gold label status.
A faster, flatter route has already beenconfirmed, and the course will be discussedin more detail along with any furtherchanges in the build-up to the race.
“Last year there were concerns over theroute which made the race a little slowerthan we had hoped, so this has been one ofthe main focus points ahead of this year’sevent,” says race ambassador Elana Meyer.
“Having earned Silver Label status at ourfirst attempt, we know we are on the righttrack, but there are some areas where we
know we can improve and various tweaksto the route could make a notable differencefor participants hoping to achieve personal
bests.”Meanwhile, after announcing a promising
local field and the first few elite internation-
al entries at the 60-day countdown to theevent, organisers confirmed the line-upwould be further boosted by a number ofglobal stars who would chase the men’s andwomen’s course records set last year byKen-yanWillyKiborKoitile (2:10:45) andEthiopi-an Meseret Mengistu Biru (2:30:57).
The men’s field will include nine IAAFGold Label Status athletes who have run un-der 2:10.00. David Kemboi Kiyeng, who fin-ished third at the 2009 Paris Marathon in2:06:26, holds the fastest personal best in therace,while three othermenhave also dippedunder 2:08:00.
The domestic contingent also includessome of the country’s most accomplishedathletes, including 43-year-old HendrickRamaala (2:06:55 PB), who won the 2004 NewYork Marathon, and 42-year-old ShadrackHoff (2:11:51), a formerSArecordholder over5 000m on the track. Both men have theirsights set on the veterans’ title. Shaun Mei-klejohn (53), who won the Comrades ultra-marathon in 1995, lines up in the masters’division.
