More than R300 000 incash and two rifleswere stolen during a

cash-in-transit robbery onSaturday at the Parow Pickn Pay Family Centre in Janvan Riebeeck Road.

According to LieutenantKevin Williams of the Parowpolice, the incident tookplace shortly after 09:00when the Standard BankATM was being loaded withcannisters filled with cash.

“Four unknown men ap-proached the guard while hewas taking out and loadingthe cash into the ATM. Onesuspect came out of the su-permarket and anothercame from outside towardshim while he was busy,”Williams says.

No arrests madeThe guard was forced to

the ground and he and hispartner’s firearms were tak-en from them.

The robbers left with threecases filled with money.

CCTV footage from the in-side of a nearby pharmacyshows one man with a fire-arm approaching the ATMfrom the Pick n Pay side, andpharmacy clients runningback into the shop as thearmed man approaches. Mo-ments later the man is gone,then people can be seen run-ning out to see what had hap-pened.

Williams says no shotswere fired and no-one wasinjured, but the four robbers

left in a waiting car that waslater found by the police. Noarrests have been made yet.

“The investigation contin-ues,” he says.

According to a car guardwho was on duty that day, itwas not very busy at the cen-tre at the time, but sheclaims she saw four suspi-cious men going into the su-permarket earlier.

“Then the cash-in-transitguys came and then the‘paw-paw’ hit the fan,” shesays.

It was bound to happen“It happened very quickly.

All I saw was a man runningaway; I thought it was one ofthem; he even dropped hisphone as he ran. But it wasjust a scared shopper.

“I have been working herefor almost six years and thisis the first time somethinglike this has happened,” shesays.

Staff at the pharmacy saythey were very shocked, buthave been expecting “some-thing like this to happensooner or later”.

“It is always the same twoguards that come with themoney – the female guard al-ways stands guard at thesame place, and they are justtwo.

“Before they started usingthe cannisters with money,they brought the cashwrapped in cling wrap. I al-ways thought that was an ac-cident waiting to happen,”one staff member says.

She adds the police did notask for the CCTV footage.

Police in Bishop Lavis may havemade a major breakthrough inhousebreakings in Montana and a

hijacking ring in the peninsula.Since last year there has been an in-

crease in incidents with many of themtaking place in Friesland Street in thesuburb.On Thursday at about 20:30 officers

were patrolling in the area when theyspotted a Grey Polo Vivo in the area.Captain Marie Louw, communications

officer for Bishop Lavis, explained thatfurther investigation revealed that thecar was hijacked in the city centre inApril this year.“Officers questioned the driver of the

car, a woman who told police that herboyfriend gave her the car to buymilk fortheir baby,” she said.“Police then escorted her to a house in

White Street and theman then confirmedthat he gave thewoman the vehicle. Theythen arrested the 23-year-old woman andthe 34-year-old man.”Police have confirmed that the woman

stays in Friesland Street and the man isfrom NY 6 Gugulethu.Police opened a docket of possession of

a hijacked vehicle but more was in storefor themas theywere busywith this oper-ation.“While the police were busy with this

arrest a white Honda Jazz approachedthem,” added Louw.“The vehicle, with three occupants,

was also stopped and during their searchpolice found a unlicensed firearm withthe serial number removed and a maga-

zine.“Upon further investigation they also

found two large crowbars in the boot,gloves and an axe.” Officers then foundthat this vehicle was hijacked in Parowin May this year.”While the policewere busywith this in-

cident, a member of the public informedthem that the same Honda was involvedat a house robbery in Friesland Street atabout 20:10. The police arrested the 24, 27and 29-year-old suspects, all of them fromGugulethu.Police have opened a docket of posses-

sion of a hijacked vehicle, possession ofan unlicensed firearm and ammunitionas well as possession of housebreakingimplements.“The possibility that the woman could

be linked to the house robberies andhousebreaking in Friesland Street andsurroundings will also be investigated,”added Louw.“We will also be investigating if these

suspects can be connected to each otherand if they are part of a syndicate.”There was also some success on Thurs-

day 13 August during stop and search ex-ercises as well as information receivedfrom the public.Police arrested awell-knowndrug deal-

er in Assegai Street, Bonteheuwel.While conducting their operations they

arrested a 33-year-old suspect from Bas-sie Street, Bonteheuwel with 55 sachetsof tik and R3200 in cash.On the same day at about 17:10 a sus-

pect was busy dealing with drugs in Ma-hogany Street, Bonteheuwel, when thepolice arrested him in possession of tikand R3000 cash, the suspect is fromPlum-bago Street, Bonteheuwel.

The Plattekloof Welgelegen and Panorama(PWP) neighbourhood watch caught twovandals in the act when they ripped out theboundary lights of a property in Plattekloof1.“I saw the man and woman walking past

from thewindowof our homeoffice and thenthey stopped to fiddle with our boundarylight,” says the home owner, who is also amember of the watch.She says the four lights outside her prop-

erty have just been replaced by the insur-ance company after it was damaged by van-dals earlier in the year.“This is a common problem in our area,

earlier in the year many properties in JimFouché Avenue were targeted.The two then ripped all four lights from

thewall, but by this time the neighbourhoodwatch was already on their way.“Wecaught themand took them to thePar-

ow police station,” she says.Tik pipes and a hacksaw blade were found

in their possession and the two were arrest-ed at the station.

sic analysts while 400 graduates will be allo-cated to Crime Intelligence and the othergraduateswill join other divisions to bolstercapacity at these divisions.The remaining 3493 entry-level Police Act

recruits will be allocated to provinces, witha clear instruction that recruitment for thedetective services remains a priority in linewith the medium term expenditure frame-work cycle that began in 2013 and ends in2016.The remaining 1252 will then be employed

in terms of the Public Service Act.National Commissioner of the South Afri-

can Police Service, General Riah Phiyega,who approved the allocations last month,emphasized that stringent measures will be

implemented to ensure that people withcriminal records, pending cases and thosethat do not meet the criteria do not find away into the SAPS.“We are expecting thousands of people to

apply for these posts,” he said.“Therefore, we must take every precau-

tionpossible to ensure thatwe select the bestas the overall plan going forward is to havethe SAPS fighting crime with clean hands.”This latest recruitment campaign follows

hot on the heels of an invitation twomonthsago to former police members to re-enlist.So far the SAPShas received a total of 2800

applications from former police officers, athousand of whom are former detectives,who have expressed interest to re-join theSAPS.The plan is to have these posts filled by the

end of the current financial year.All of these interventions are part of a

A cell phone robber was brought to hisknees by theParowcommunitywho reactedto the hysterical screams of a 14-year-oldgirl. The incident happened during peakhour in the busy parking area of the ParowCentre before school on 14 August. The girl,who was on her way to school from the taxirank, was approached by two men who

came from different directions when shecrossed the parking area. They demandedher phone, but when she refused, threaten-ed her with a knife and snatched her Sam-sung cell phone from her jacket pocket.According to Lieutenant Kevin Williams

of the Parow police, community membersresponded to the screams and chased bothsuspects.“Warrant Officer Shaun Smith was in the

areaandafter a long chase theyarrestedone

of the suspects with the help of the commu-nity in the vicinity of McCarthy and Willi-ams street in Parow,” Williams says.The suspect is from Leonsdale in Elsies

River and was charged with armed robberyin the Bellville magistrates court on 17 Au-gust. He is still in custody.The Parow police management expressed

their appreciation for the communitymem-bers that assisted the victim in the arrestof the suspect.

weekly sessions from Monday to Friday,when the team meets at 14:00 sharp withtheir needles and wool to do what they lovebest: knitting.Managed by Angelica Matthys, Occupa-

tional Therapy technician at Stikland Hos-pital, theknitting sessions provide the facil-ity’s clients with the opportunity to openlyinteract with each other, reflecting on theirpast activities and family life.Matthys says besides the obvious advan-

tage of creating useful articles andgarments, knitting also has a host of physi-cal and psychological benefits.“Once a client has mastered the skill of

knitting, the movement becomes rhythmicand repetitive. This elicits a relaxation re-action, in which the client’s levels of stress,heart rate and blood pressure declines, and

normalising his or her breathing.“Other benefits include the improvement

of finemotor skills, while keeping themindactive and engaged,” says Matthys.The group, lovingly known as the Golden

Angels, recently took part in an initiativeto knit a range of articles and garments forthe Kangaroo Babies programme at Tyger-berg Hospital..Apart from this, the teamalso knitted bed

socks, beanies and scarves for the older pa-tients at the facility.

“This deed of kindness definitely im-proved the patients’ motivation and self-worth,” says Matthys.

Apart from knitting, the OTward also of-fers other client programmes such as craftactivities for clients, comprising of baking,playing games and watching movies, aswell as a book and pillow project.Other activities include Psych Social Re-

hab, which focuses on developing clients’emotional, social and intellectual skills, allof which they require to live, learn andwork in their communities.

A man robbed of cash, cell phone and hisshoes by five armed men at the Tygerbergstation, got back at them when he madea citizens arrest later in the day when herecognised one of his perpetrators.

According to Lieutenant Kevin Willi-ams of the Parow police station, the victimwas walking across the bridge at the sta-tion last Saturday evening when he wasapproached by the five men, one of whompointed a firearm at him. After his pocketswere emptied and his takkies taken, thegroup ran off.

“One of the suspects pretended that hewas looking for scrap during the robberybut after the robbery he also ran away.Later the victim and his family walkedback towards Parow centre and saw thissuspect,” Williams says.

According to him the complainant im-mediately went after the suspect andcaught up with him. With the help of hisfamily members, they then arrested thesuspect and took him to the Parow policestation.

Williams says the suspect was detainedand charged with armed robbery at theBellville Magistrates court in Parow thefollowing Monday.

Sy sê die swart-en-wit hemde, broeke endoelwagtertruie is gemerk met die swart,wit en rooi van die Vasco-sokkerklub-wa-pen, asook die ouderdomsgroep van dietwee spanne.

Jade (22) het ’n brandwond in synek opge-doen toe hy die man uit die vlamme geredhet. Jade, wat in die Durbanville-kinder-huis grootgeword het, tree tans op in diemusiekblyspel Op Gister se Voetspore inGrandWest-casino se Roxy Revue Bar-tea-ter. Die openingsaand was verlede Vrydagen die speelvak duur nog tot Saterdag 19

September. Jade het aan TygerBurger ver-tel hy het verlede Maandag omstreeks 16:00in ’n park op die hoek van Skool- en Kwar-telstraat in Morningstar met die buurt sekinders krieket gespeel, toe een van die kin-ders gil dat daar ’n brand is.

Hy het die vlamme en rook sien uitborrelby ’n houthuisie in die agterplaas van Jos-sie Ruiters se huis op die hoek van Skool-straat en Spreeusingel, wat grens aan dieparkie. “Ek het die krieketkolf net daarneergegooi en nader gehardloop,” het hyvertel. Jade het toe gehardloop om water in diehande te kry om die vlamme te blus, maar

Make way for the Big Bands!Big band enthusiasts are in for a treat whenthe 10th Brass Band Extravaganza comes toArtscape Theatre on Saturday 22 August.

Formally known as Kader Miller’s BrassBand Pops, the annual big band festival hasbecome a collaboration between ArtscapeTheatre and well-known band leader andjazz musician, Ian Smith.

The purpose of the concert has alwaysbeen to provide a platform for emergingyoung bands.

Continuingwith this, the showcase has al-so, under Smith’s baton, had a make-over.

Asdirector, Smithhas takenamore select-ive approach to the production, togetherwithpromotingmore interactionand collab-oration between bands.

TheBrassBandExtravaganza is an oppor-tunity to bring together bands that wouldn’tnecessarily be seen on the same stage else-where.

This year sees Wynberg Girls’ High JazzBand and Steenberg High School’s wind andjazzbandsperformingalongside communityproject bands like the Wellington Big Bandand the world-renowned Delft Big Band.

They will be joined by Brass Band Theoryand the Santam District Big Band who haveboth evolved from minstrel groups.

Although these groups all come from verydifferent backgrounds, they share the com-monality of having all worked with Smithin some capacity, from training anddevelop-ment to mentorship.

The six orchestras have participated inworkshops with Smith throughout the year,with a focus on promoting musical literacy.

Their concert on Saturday 22 August willfeature a diverse mix of instrumental, vocaljazz, popular light classical music with anAndrew Lloyd Webber medley, some Mich-ael Bublé and Ella Fitzgerald favourites, aStevie Wonder selection, a medley of Abbahits and Johann Strauss’ Radetzky Marchamong the items on the program.

D’ville Primary golfers end up tops

Debutants Durbanville Primary Schoolcelebrated a roaring eight stroke victo-ry in the fifth Ernie Els Primary

Schools Championship after denying CurroAurora repeat success at the Fish River SunCountry Club recently.

Ayden Senger (74), Louis Loubser (75) andMax Orgovanvyi (83) enjoyed a great ope-ning partnership of 232 that put DurbanvillePrimary School in pole position in their firstappearance at the premier annual juniorteam event.

Loubser returned a 76, Senger carded a 77and Orgovanyi posted another 83 for a finalround 236 to secure victory on 468.

“We are so happy and so proud of theteam,” said coach and team manager LanaOrgovanyi.

“We sat with Curro Aurora at dinner du-ring the opening ceremony and the trophywas on the table. I pointed to the trophy andtold the players that this is what we cameto play for and it was up to them if we wouldtake the trophy home.

Historic moment for school“They all came to the party in a big way.

Even when they struggled at times, theyplayed with great determination and com-mitment and I am incredibly pleased forthem.

“It is such an honour for the primaryschools around South Africa to compete inan event of this nature, sponsored by one ofthe biggest heroes in South African golf.This is a historic moment for the school and

Developing the game and young golfers“This marked the fifth year that the cham-

The 18-year-old Bellville Golf Club golferopened with a dismal 77 at Golfclub Heidel-berg, but rocketed to third overall with a so-lid two under 70 in round two.

Van der Merwe traded three bogeys forthree birdies in the final round and wipedout a double bogey at the seventh with hisfirst eagle at the par-five eighth.

He holed out for his second eagle at thepar-four 14th to sign off with a 70 to finishtwo strokes behind winner Marcus Hellig-kilde from Denmark.

The Dane took the 36 hole lead with roundsof 73 and 72 and closed with a 70 to triumphon one-under-par 215.

Van der Merwe earned his berth in the in-vitation-only event after he defeated Fin-land’s Ilari Saulo by two strokes to claim theBoys Division in the Curro South Africa Ju-niors International at his home course inMarch.
