of communities across the Cape Flats.This was the plea of former Hard Livings

gang leader and ex-prisoner Rashied Staggieat a special church service held at the NewDirections Grace Church in Parow on Sun-day.Staggie admitted to a packed auditorium

that he was, to a large extent, guilty of theinflux of drugs into the Cape and claimedresponsibility for a number of deaths he or-dered duringhis tenure as leader of theHardLivings.“Many decisions from myself as leader –

it’s because ofme thatmany peoplewere kil-

led,” he said.“It was because of my decisions that so

much hurt came over people and into theirhomes. I am also the cause of so many drugsbeing pumped into the Cape,” he said.Staggie showed a softer side to his perso-

nality when he directly apologised to hisown family and the family of his slain twinbrother, Rashaad.Rashaad was set alight and killed in front

of his home in Salt River by members of thevigilante group Pagad in 1996.“I am just aman.Amanwhodesires atten-

tion and love and to be accepted,” Staggietold the congregants.“I ask the forgiveness of all the peoplewho

suffered because of the decisions Imade,” hesaid.Staggie said he had “a relatively solid un-

derstanding of what drugs could do to a com-

munity”.“In 2001 I fell into drug abuse. I used all

the kinds of drugs one could use. Manynights I layhighas I slept over inhotels, guil-ty of promiscuity.“The pain in the eyes ofmy childrenwhen

I got home, will haunt me,” he said.“If I knew then what I know now, I would

have wanted to be a different Rashied Stag-gie. I want to work together with the policeand gangsters and users and sellers, I wantto get gangsters to quit their activities,” hesaid.Staggie’s testimony was part of a celebra-

tory programme organised by the church tohonour a group of graduates, all reformedprisoners, gangsters, murderers, drug ad-dicts and criminals.The group all successfully completed a

programme run by IvanWaldeck of theWes-

tern Cape Outreach Community organisati-on.Waldeck is well-known in church circles

on the Cape Flats for his work with formerprisoners, and is a former gangster and pris-oner himself.Waldeck said this was the first time in 10

years Staggie had spoken publicly.Sebastian Petersen, deputy director of the

correctional services department, said pro-grammes such as those Waldeck ran were“making (his) job easier”.Petersen also declared that the depart-

ment would be signing a memorandum ofunderstanding with the church, citing that“any programmes done with inmates wouldbe done through this church”.“We will get teams (from the Grace

church) into prisons and working with in-mates,” Petersen said.

siekvasvra-program,Noot vir noot, op die te-levisie te kyk toe hulle ’n helse slag hoor.“Ek het nog gewonder wat dit kan wees,

toe begin goed opmyneer te reën. Bakstene,glasstukke, ’n vensterraam en selfs ’n vis-tenk het op my geval,” vertel Springfield.Hy sê hy kan nie onthou of hy sy bewus-

syn verloor het nie, maar hy het onmiddel-lik na Roberts begin roep. “Alles was deur-mekaar. Die vragmotor se neus het reg voormy tot stilstandgekom.Ekhetnet gewonderwaar Cheryl is. As die vragmotor verder be-weeg het, sou hymy óf teen die muur vasge-druk het óf regdeur diemuurmetmy gejaaghet,” sê hy.Daar is met Springfield na ’n nabygeleë

and confirm partnerships last Thursday.The function revolved around the deve-

lopment of Greater Tygerberg as the city’snext economic hub, said Professor ErwinSchwella of Stellenbosch University’sSchool for Public Leadership, one of the se-lected invitees.“The event was arranged to garner fur-

ther impetus for the Greater TygerbergPartnership (GTP) and the cooperation ofthe City, partners, business, academics andcivil organisations,” Schwella said.

Social contract“It’s been about two years since the foun-

ding of the GTP and we felt this kind of con-tact was necessary,” he said.“The event was not to reach a formal

agreement but served rather to confirmandcelebrate the social contract between thepartners.”Schwella and Sam Pienaar, a Bellville

councillor chargedwith problembuildings,were key organisers of the meeting.Pienaar rightly called it an “open discus-

sion with very senior leaders about deve-lopment in the northern suburbs”.Guests included GTP chair Dr Musa She-

zi, both rectors of SU and UWC, ProfessorWim de Villiers and Tyrone Pretorius, andchairman of Sanlam’s board of directors,Desmond Smith, among others.GTP CEO Chris O’Connor was unable to

attend the event.“Chris does excellent work and we would

have loved to have him there,” Schwellasaid.Regarding the development of the area,

mayor Patricia de Lille said any such pro-

jects would see to the growth of cities andbring benefits to the economy, job-creationand investor returns.

Economic node“We see the Greater Tygerberg region as

an important economic node in the city.With our vision to create an interconnectednetwork of economic hubs around the city,the importance of Tygerberg as a regioncannot be underestimated,” said De Lille.“The Voortrekker Road Corridor (VRC)

has been selected due to its accessibility,existing and potential employment oppor-tunities, and residential growth potential.“The VRC Strategy and Investment Plan

will provide a prioritised programme of pu-

blic investment in the corridorwith the aimof facilitating and leveraging furthergrowth, development and investment,” shesaid.De Lille said this would be achieved

through targeted interventions into keyareas that represent the locational advanta-ge of the VRC Integration Zone.She added the City would place key em-

phasis on “leveraging development centredon the public transport network”.De Lille added that the City was “enthusi-

astic” about the GTP conducting discussi-ons with stakeholders to test their under-standing of the operation of the VRC and toidentify possible interventions to be imple-mented in future.

In ’n klein baksteengeboutjie op die per-seel van die Durbanvillese taxi-staanplekwerk drie vroue voltyds om groepe onop-

geleide, werklose mense te help om metwaardigheid envaardigheid die ekonomie tebetree.

“Onswerkmet omtrent 300mense per jaarwat ons verskillende kursusse bywoon endaar is baie suksesstories,” sê Jane Gelder-man, bestuurder van die Fisantekraal-sen-trum vir ontwikkeling.

Sy sê dié nie-winsgewende organisasie sedrie kursusse is daarop gemik om ’npersoonte help om in geheel te ontwikkel.

“Ons leer mense vaardighede, maar dit is’nholistiese benadering, onsprobeer ookomdie mense emosioneel en spiritueel te ont-wikkel.”

Basiese kursusHoewel die sentrum Christelik-gefun-

deerd is, is enigiemand welkom om vir hulp

te kom aanklop, sê Gelderman.Die mees basiese kursus is ’n werkgereed-

heidsprogramvan drieweke, wat op temas fo-kus soos lewensvaardighede, verhoudings enbasiese begrotings – “dinge wat jou lewe kanverbeter”, sê sy.

Die program behels verder ’n kleinhandel-vaardigheidskursus, gemik op kliëntediens,basiese wiskunde, basiese rekenaarwerk enverkoopspunt-tegnieke.

Gelderman sê omtrent 90% van die kandi-date vir hierdie kursus is glad nie rekenaar-geletterd nie.

“Ons leer hulle hoe om ’n Facebook-profielte maak, hul CV saam te stel en aan die eindevan die kursus doen hulle dan indiensoplei-ding vir drie dae by ondernemings in die om-gewing wat ons goedgesind is,” sê sy. Hierdiegeleenthede lei dikwels tot indiensneming.

Die tweede kursus is ’n kantooradministra-sieprogram van tien weke wat meer intensie-we rekenaaropleiding en kommunikasie-vaardighede insluit. “Ons is geleidelik besigom ’n netwerk op te bou van ondernemingswaar ons hierdie kandidate kan plaas,” sê

Gelderman. Die sentrum se mees sukses-volle kursus is die “Bake for profit”-entre-preneursprogram, ’n praktiese kursus wathoofsaaklik vroue leer om hulle eie gebak-onderneming op die been te bring.

“Aan die einde van hierdie program isnagenoeg 90% van die studente in staat omhul eie ondernemings te begin. En dit ismeestalmensewatvantevoreniekos indiehuis gehad het nie, en nou in staat is omhul kinders se skoolgelde te betaal,” vertelsy.

OpgewondeDie Fisantekraal-sentrum vir ontwikke-

ling is vanjaar een van TygerBurger seWant Ons Kan-konsertbegunstigdes.

Hieroor is Gelderman baie opgewonde.“Ons gaan met die geld uit dié konsert,

’n Frail Care-kursus begin. Ons het klaardie studiemateriaal aangekoop. Nou moetons nog net ’n plek kry om die opleidingte doen en ’n gekwalifiseerde verpleegsteraanstel om die opleiding te doen. Ons hoopom hiermee in Augustus te begin,” sê sy.

Die sentrum besit grond in Fisantekraalen Gelderman sê daar gaan binnekort ’ngebou opgerig word om sodoende meer

mense te kan akkommodeer vir opleiding enook om meer uiteenlopende praktiese kur-susse te kan aanbied.

“Ons wil graag in daardie gemeenskap ge-vestig raak en ons gebou sal hopelik ook as’n gemeenskapsentrumdien.Opdie oomblikword ons aktiwiteite beperk deur die minruimte wat ons hier het,” sê sy.

Die sentrum is al vir vyf jaar aktief, maarGelderman sê verbasend min mense is be-wus van hulle.

“Ons het altyd nog vrywilligers nodig enbefondsing bly maar ’n tameletjie, maar diekerke in die omgewing help ons baie,” sê sy.

“Ons bedien veral diewerklose jeug enhetna skole in gemeenskappe gegaanwaar daarnie geld is vir verdere opleiding nie. Baievan ons kandidate kom van daar af.

“Ons werk hoofsaaklik met die ouder-domsgroep 18 tot 35. Dr. Niel le Roux, wat aan die hoof van dieSBA staan, het weer ’n slag die aandag opdie goeie werk wat deur dié groep gedoenword, met TygerBurger bespreek.

Hy sê sedert sy aanstelling in Septemberlaasjaar is daar reeds baie positiewe werkgedoen en nuwe projekte aangepak, wat naverwagting in Augustus ’n aanvang salneem. Een hiervan is die SBA se Brugbou-projek in vennootskap met skole en die be-trokkenheid van bemagtigingsorganisasiessoos Media24 se Rachel’s Angels.

Deur sy Brugbou-projek maak die SBAdit moontlik vir skrander leerders met uni-versiteitspotensiaal om mentorskap te ont-vang tot kort voor hul naskoolse studies ’naanvang neem.

Dan is daar natuurlik die SBA se hoogssuksesvolle drama-bywoningsprojekte.

“So, byvoorbeeld, het ons (onlangs) ’nspesiale opvoering van Vaselinetjie by dieKunstekaap-teater in gebaretaal gedoenmet twee tolke en gehoorgestremdes – sig-gestremdes sommer ook bygevoeg, aange-sien dit ’n voorgeskrewe werk landswydis,” vertel Niel.

Tydens die jaarlikse nasionale toneel-spelkompetisie vir hoërskoolleerders in dieKunstekaap, het die SBA spesiale afrigtingaan leerders van die Sekondêre Skool Skur-weberg (Ceres), asook die Pionierskool opWorcester gegee deur ’n spesiale mentor-skapprogram. Twee leerders van Skurwe-berg het deurgedring na die uitdunronde indie Kunstekaap en een leerder van die Pio-nierskool het ’n aanmoedigingsprys tydenshierdie rondes ontvang.

Hulle het met die uitnodiging aan die Pio-nierskool na Vaselinetjie die boek voorafspesiaal in braille laat druk, sodat die leer-ders dit kon lees voor hulle die opvoeringbygewoon het. “Dit is maar één projek,”vertel Niel. Hy verduidelik dat onderwysdie grondslag van die SBA se verskillendeprojekte vorm, en dat die doelstelling is omvaardighede, kennis en waardes aan alleAfrikaanssprekendes oor te dra.

Op dié manier het die SBA ook verledeVrydagaand ’n groot interaktiewe verto-ning aangebied met die kletsrymer Hemel-besem in die Kunstekaap. Sowat 60 leerdersvan die Proteus Tegniese Sekondêre Skoolkon op uitnodiging van die SBA dié mengel-moes van poësie, musikale andersheid, vi-suele uitdrukking deur ’n grafitti-kunste-naar, en selfs ’n tatoeëerdery in lewende ly-we op die verhoog meeleef. Hemelbesem,alias Simon Witbooi, het in verskeie dialek-te van Afrikaans sy liefde vir die taal weer-gegee en het telkens die gehoor op hul voetegehad, swymelend-wiegend of kopknik-kend, of bloot laggend oor sy vlymskerp ge-bruik van idiomatiese uitdrukkings en diekulturele andersheid daarvan onder ver-skillende Afrikaanssprekers. Die boodskapwas duidelik: “Trots Afrikaans”.

Jan Mouton, Belgiese direksielid van dieSBA, het die vertoning as “fantasties” be-skryf, terwyl die Proteus-leerders Hemelbe-sem en mede-kunstenaar en gehoorlid, EmoAdams, in die voorportaal van die Kunste-kaap voorgekeer het vir handtekeninge.

Peter (95) and Thelma (87) have weathered many storms together in their 65year union. Herethey celebrate his 95th birthday in January.

Theirs is a love story spanning six deca-des, with a first dance in the middle ofthe street onChristmasday to themelo-

dy of “Silent Night”.Add a war, a wait of five years before they

were allowed tomarry, and a life spent faith-fully supporting each other.Peter (95) andThelmaBest have been toge-

ther for 65 years. The couple live in theGeor-ge and Annie Starck Home in Bellville, butbefore that they spent most of their lives inBoston, having occupied one of the first everhomes there in 12th Avenue with their twochildren.Because Thelma is in the frail care unit

at the home, their story was told by the cou-

ple’s daughter Michele Hlozek, from its be-ginning on 31 May 1950.

Peter goes to the frail care unit twice aday during visiting hours to see his belovedwife.

Dancing in the streetThe couple have known each other since

Thelma was eight-years-old and Peter 16.Thelma’s family rentedoneof thehouses ow-ned by Peter’s family.He knew of her, but when he was about 17,

he went off to fight inWordWar II. Hermomand her family then moved away.Her father came back from the war in Au-

gust 1945, Michele says. He had spent yearsin a camp in Germany as a prisoner of war.“My grandmother’s birthday was on

Christmas day,” Michele recalls. “They hada very sacred family tradition, where thechildren and family members would get to-gether at midnight and sing Christmas ca-rols, then give my grandmother herbirthday presents.”Michele says on that day, Peter was out

with a girlfriend in Sea Point, getting incre-asingly worried about missing the familygathering.“They took the last train home. He ran all

the way from the girlfriend’s house and gothome at 01:20. He remembers that perfectly.“When he entered, everyone was singing

Christmas carols. Mymother was also therewith her mother. They were, of course,friends of the family.“My dad started singing along. Then he

put his arm around my mother,” Michelesays. “They’ve supported each other sincethen.”Her dadwalked hermother’s family home

and before he left, Peter and Thelma stoodin the middle of the road slowly dancing to

“Silent Night”.“My grandmother was furious. She stood

watching them through the window. Shewould not condone their relationship. At thetime, mymother was only 17, my father was25. My grandmother wanted them to wait toget married.”But love has its own ways.

Love struckIn the five intervening years until their

marriage, a love struck Thelma would sit atthe kitchen window waiting for Peter towalk through a patch of trees towards herevery night. The couple married when Thel-ma turned 21, and 31May 1950 was their spe-cial date.

Theymoved into thehome inBostonwhenThelma was pregnant with Michele and herelder brother, Gary, was six-years-old.BetweenMichele andGary, theBests have

three grandchildren and three great-grand-children.The eldest grandchild is 30 and the youn-

gest great-grandchild is two-years-old.Michele says her parents alway counted

on each other.“When my dad came back from the war,

he felt so out of touch with normal life, ha-ving lived in a POW camp.“He still gives mymother all the credit for

standing by him and helping him get backinto ‘normal’ society – that’s what madethem so close,” she says.

“Omdat ’n mens nie ’n teeparty kan housonder gaste nie, is daar ookwerke vanmyander geliefdes soos Mozart, Bellini en Of-fenbach,” verduidelik Zanne.

Die Durbanville-musiekgroep Zandkloofis op ’n missie om “ongekende klankein Afrikaans na jou ore te bring”.

Die duo wat onder die na-me Milan Joan en Die Wolfmusiek maak, is sterk oppad om bekendheid te ver-werf. Liedjies van hul de-buut-kortalbum, Brandendvir jou hitte, is reeds op BokRadio en Bay FM te hoor.

Milan is Zandkloof sestem, terwyl Die Wolf dieskrywer en komponis is.

“Dis nie soos Afrikaansemusiek nie,” vertel Milan.

“Maar tog is die woordeAfrikaans.”

Anders as baie kommer-siële Afrikaanse musiek, issuiwer taalgebruik baie be-langrik vir Die Wolf, en ’nmens sal nooit woorde soosbaby inhul liedjies hoornie.

Actionpacked racing is due to thrill spectators at Killarney during the Carnival Race Day onSaturday.

With Saturday’s unique Carnival Ra-ce Day offering more top flight va-riety than has ever been experien-

ced at Killarney, there is tremendous exci-tement among petrol-heads of all ages.

The on-track action includes the Caperound of the All-Africa 3-Hour EnduranceRace Series due to finish after dark, a legof the South African Superkart Champi-onship and round four of the Power Seriesfor cars and motorcycles, sponsored byWingfield Motors.

A parade of VW Beetles in honour of themarque’s 80th anniversary (the prototypePeople’s Car was unveiled in Germany inmid 1935), will take place during the lunchbreak, with the lucky winners of highspeed laps in a racing sports Porsche com-petition to receive their award shortly af-terwards. There will also be a display ofmotorcycle stunt riding.

Static attractions will be an Exotic andSports Car Show that includes several his-toric motorcycles under cover in the spaci-ous new pit block. The popular Engen F1simulators will be available to budding Le-wis Hamiltons in the same building. Outs-ide, a multifaceted fun fair and amusementpark will run in the adjacent parking area.

American muscleWhile entries for the 3-Hour Race include

six Porsches, all with two or even threedrivers, the battle up front is likely to befought between a trio of Junos, a Dodge Vi-per and possibly a Panoz Esperante.

The formidable Juno attack is being ledby Western Cape champion Francis Carru-thers, with co-drivers Nick Adcock and De-an McCarroll in an SS3 V6. They will haveto face Craig Jarvis and Marcel Angel inJarvis’s recently acquired brutal V10, 8.4litre Dodge Viper, and an American-sour-

ced V8 Panoz Esperante shared by Dave Al-hadeff, Jonathan Bernstein and Chris Caro-lin.

Any gap up front will allow the remainingJuno SS3s of Steve Humble / Johan Engel-brecht and Colin Plit / Dawie Joubert, ormaybe even Justin Mathie and Gary Sher-rat’s Nissan 370Z to take up the chase.

LowslungThen there’s the potentially awesome

spectacle of the Superkart races where thedrivers’ backside is a few inches off theground, in these tiny projectiles with no sus-pension and wheels the size of chocolate coa-ted doughnuts. However, they are poweredby 250cc motors with six speed sequentialgearboxes and can hit over 200 km/h on theback straight and lap quicker than the migh-ty Wesbank V8’s of a couple of years ago.

The perennially hard-fought Bold MarineGTi Challenge racing is expected to be ahighlight. Young Marco Busi and Christop-her Swart swapped lead places last monthand will be the ones to watch.

While 15-year-old Joshua Dolinschek willseek to repeat his recent single seater For-mula Libre victory, the battle in the MutluBatteries Classic Cars and the Cars Unlimi-ted Fine Car events, which includes DaveRowley’s rare, modified VW Beetle, is expec-ted to be much closer.

With the first race to start at 10.00am, theAfrican 3-Hour is the final event and is toget under way at 4.15pm. Admission is R60for adults and R20 for scholars under 16.There is no charge for kids under 12. Ticketsare also available from Computicket.
