There are a number of buildings withinBellville ripe for redevelopment, possi-bly for use as student housing, says the

Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP).It has identifiedone suchbuilding inKrus-

kal Avenue in Bellville where, with the landowner’s agreement, an architechtural firmwill develop concept sketches and conducta financial viability study, the GTP announ-ced in a statement.

“This work will assess the possibilities ofturning the building into student housing, with the associated student services locatedon the ground floor,” the statement read.

“The appointment of SurfaceWorx Archi-

tects was made on 10 April and the work isexpected tobe concludedby the endof June.”

It is hoped the work will determine the via-bility of converting the building into studentaccomodation, and provide an indication ofthe potential for conversion of other buil-dings in the area.

“If the financial viability study proves po-sitive, this project may be the incentive tospark further student housing and servicesdevelopment within the Bellville area.”

The Bellville area is home to about 100 000students and there is currently a “huge”shortage of student housing in the area.

Only three residences, including the long-

standing student hall in the beautiful herita-ge-registered Old Mutual building, servicethe large number of students.

“Whilst student housing is being providedfor some students, there are limited servicesand amenities in the area to support theirlifestyle.

“There is no coffee culture, and life can ea-sily be contained within the four walls oftheir residence,” the GTP notes.

“It has been argued that the majority ofstudent learning happens outside of theclassroom and therefore it is important tocreate an inviting urban space for them toengage in.”

“Hy was ook jare lid van die Louis Hur-ter-boereorkes en het ’n groot bydrae gele-wer toe hulle drie keer as nasionale wen-or-kes aangewys was.”

Notable ceramicist contributes to Tygerberg partnership

Award winning ceramicist Hennie Meyer regaled guests with the processesinvolved in ceramic art..

Professionals in the creative in-dustries held the second in a seriesof workshops with the Greater Ty-gerberg Partnership (GTP) on Fri-day.

The workshop, part of the Futu-re Tyger Creative sessions, washeld at the De Oude Welgemoedrestaurant in Bellville.

The purpose is to celebrate ar-tists from the Tygerberg regionand draw on their aesthetic in-sight and contribution to theGTP’s urban renewal.

Award-winning South Africanceramicist Hennie Meyer, a keydriver of the city-wide World De-sign Capital 2014 ceramic mug pro-ject, Ukusela Ekapa, enlightened

guests about his craft.Hennie works predominantly in

earthenware, creating highly indi-vidual pieces, working and tea-ching from a studio in Durbanvil-le.

Using the expressive qualities ofclay, composite shapes and colour,he turns strong forms and detailedsurfaces into aesthetically plea-sing vessels, objects and installati-ons.

His work is neither commercialnor mass-produced, making everysingle piece unique with its ownindividual form and shape, whichis then repeatedly glazed and fired.

Hennie’s work has been exhibi-ted in South Africa, Europe, the

UK and Asia and he has participa-ted in the Ceramic Art Londonexhibit for seven consecutive ye-ars.

Locally, his work has been in-cluded in numerous private andpublic collections, notably those ofthe Iziko Museums of Cape Town, the Corobrick Collection, the KingGeorge V Gallery, the Sasol Muse-um and the Durbanville Clay Mu-seum.

He employs Alessandro Pappa-da as a part time studio assistantand Nomfuneko Matshaya as a fulltime assistant, and is a member ofthe International Academy of Ce-ramics and a fellow of CeramicsSouth Africa.

With largenumbers of foreignnationals liv-ing in Tygerberg, two local organisationshave stood up against the xenophobic at-tacks currently in the news.

The Greater Tygerberg Partnership(GTP) and Voortrekker Road Corridor Im-provement District (VRCID) have spokenout against the “inhumane attacks on blackAfricans from the rest of our continent”.

Chris O’Connor (GTP CEO) and DerekBock (VRCIDCOO) in a joint statement saidtheir organisations represented a localcommunity of diverse nationalities.

They said many Africans live and workin the Bellville CBD and surroundingneighbourhoods, and have lived in thecountry for over a decade.

The GTP and VRCID categorically “sup-port integration of these communities intothe broader Tygerberg region, and want todiscourage any similar violent attacks

against these members of our community”.“As such we will support any initiatives

aimed at preventing such unacceptable ac-tion, so as to ensure the streets and neigh-bourhoods of the greater Tygerberg regionremain safe and hospitable to all communi-ties who reside therein,” they said.

Both organisations work with represent-atives from across the African communi-ties daily. Programmes include promotingaffordable housing, supporting the estab-lishment of “business watch” initiativesand theannualHeritageFestival inSeptem-ber and October.

These programmes and events wereaimed at “promoting the heritage and cul-tures of the vibrant and unique communi-ties that interact in the region”.

“The GTP and VRCID strongly condemnthe senseless and unjustified violenceagainst foreign nationals.”

Cold dinners, cold bathwater, darkrooms and interrupted electricity sup-ply are hot topics at the moment.

Cape Town’s mayco member for utilityservices, Ernest Sonnenberg, recently toldFin24why some areas never experience loadshedding, while others appear to receive aninordinate amount.“As far as exclusions from load shedding

is concerned, the city is guided by regulati-on NRS048-9,” Sonnenberg said.“This is the national standard for load

shedding and deals with the appropriate tre-atment of critical loads and the essential lo-ad requirements of various customers.”

Various criteriaFin24 reports areas that are exempt from

load shedding, as identified by theNRS048-9,are measured by a number of criteria. These include: the safety of people, the en-

vironment, the potential damage to plantsassociated with a critical national product(for example wastewater treatment works)and technical constraints on executing loadshedding and curtailment or restoration.“Based on these criteria and where possi-

ble, the City does exclude major hospitals, major central business districts and areas

where there aremajor crowds gathered forspecific events,” Sonnenberg said.“Areas that have been previously exclu-

ded are the Table Mountain cable car, aswell as parts of the central business dis-tricts across the city, and major hospi-tals,” Sonnenberg said.“Some residents and businesses may be

excluded from load shedding if their pro-perties share a dedicated circuit with theabovementioned exclusions.”Eskom shed some light on why some pe-

ople’s lights do not come back on after thescheduled loadhas been shed in their area.SpokespersonKhulu Phasiwe toldFin24

that some municipalities used automatedtechnology to manage the process, whileothers use manual switches.“If the technician is stuck in traffic and

needs to get to the switchboard, perhapsthere might be a delay,” he said, as anexample.

Nuisance trippingSonnenberg said “nuisance tripping”

caused some areas to be without powerlonger than they should.“The restoration of power sometimes re-

sults in ‘nuisance tripping’, which often

goes unreported due to the assumption thatthe outage is due to load shedding,” he said.“This could also lead to some customers be-

ing under the impression they are being dis-proportionately affected.”The City implements load shedding accor-

ding to the schedule on its website, when itis instructed to do so byEskom. He said consu-

mers can mitigate against this by switchingoff appliances prior to load shedding andperhaps leave only a light or two on to indi-cate the return of the supply.Residents can SMS the City’s technical

operations centre on 31220 if their electricityremains off for longer than scheduled.- Source: News24

I read with interest Zelda’sletter, “Diere in sirkusse wordmisbruik”, TygerBurger 15April. I recall some letters lastyear and remember a group ofprotesters with placards callingfor closure of the circus whichis again on tour.I agree with some of your

remarks but not all. You haveyour right to say what youfeel. I would like to ask if youfeel the same way, and wouldwrite to all media here and inSouth Africa to put a stop tosome of the following places ofamusement. The Aquarium at the V&A

The ocean where itshould be is possibly 100metres away. Then we can goto Hout Bay to the World ofBirds and see all those animalsin their “tronke”. They haveBlack eagles and others there“permanent in draadhokke”who can see the blue sky andmountains close by but cannotsoar to hunt and catch theirown prey. Perhaps for “selfsugtigefinansiële genot” as you say. However, many people cantake their children and grand-children to see the animals fora day of fun. Go and see thesmiles and happiness it bringsto the children. Also, theycreate employment.I personally, and I’m sure

there are many others, wouldlike to urge Maclarens circusand others I’ve mentioned, tokeep up the good they do andthe pleasure they bring tomany who are not able to go tothe Kruger and Etosha Parks. And on a sad note Zelda, we

With regards to your articletitled “Flood of queries overwater usage”, TygerBurger, 15April, I would like to informyou that I am disputing a waterbill of over R7000.I disagree with the statement

that a water meter cannot jumpand an intermittent fault wouldbe ‘easy’ to identify. If a foreign object in the

water lodges in the countermechanism, when it dislodges, the mechanism suddenly rotatesat high speed and can skip agear tooth without leaving anyevidence because the gear teethare plastic and the foreignobject washes away. Testing the

SLICE OF LIFE

No ‘top’ copleft – we allshare blameWhat message are we sending ourchildren when the top cop in the prov-ince faces suspension after charges ofcorruption are levelled at him?Western Cape police commissioner

Arno Lamoer and three senior officersappeared in court and are facing suspec-sion on 109 counts including corruption, money laundering and racketeering, witha Cape businessman. These are officers who, filling the

highest policing position in the province, should be beyond reproach – to theextent that a parking ticket could not beheld to their names.Yet daily we are faced with stories

about police officers flouting the law.The very men and women who are

meant to protect us, are committingcrimes and endangering others.Where are the days when becoming a

police officer was an honour, a calling foronly the bravest and most trustworthy?Perhaps it has seeped in from our

society, where breaking the law is sowidespread it has become the norm. How often do we think nothing of

jaywalking, driving after drinking orkeeping money found on the street? We turn a blind eye to drug dealing

and gangsterism, quick to pull ourcurtains closed or avert our faces. We should not only hold our police

officers accountable, reporting theirfailures to uphold the law, but also ourcommunity members, friends and family. The fight against corruption is the

responsibility of each and every one ofus.

The effect of load shedding on house-hold electrical circuits cameunder thespotlight last week.

Electrical faults are often stated as thecause of fires in houses and businesses, ifno other cause is known, said Wentzel vanderMerwe, national claimsmanager of CIAin Johannesburg. In the incident last Tuesday morning in

which the house of Dr Mariana de Jager inDurbanville burnt down, it was speculatedthat the power surge created when the elec-tricity flow was restored after load shed-ding, caused an electrical fault. An independent assessor for CIA, Mike

Hill of Mike Hill & Associates, was first onthe scene at the gutted house last Wednes-day morning. He said there is a good change the electri-

cal surge after load shedding had affectedsome electrical equipment. “It may havewell been the geyser, hi-fi or television. Itlooksas if the fire started furtheraway fromthe spare room where Mariana slept,” hesaid.Van der Merwe said the outcome of the

forensic investigation is not yet known.Fanus Coetzee, head of Santam’s claims

assessment services, said at Santam thenumber of load shedding claims is not highcompared to the overall number of claimsthey receive in general. They have received several claims rela-

ted to load shedding – eight claims inFebru-ary, 122 in March and 67 in April.

“These claims were primarily related tohouse contents, such as damage to electri-cal appliances and the deterioration of ref-rigerator contents,” he said.“We have received reports of power sur-

ges due to load shedding, but not a specificcase such as the abovementioned example(in which a house burnt down).“In the instance where a fire is caused by

anelectrical fault due to load shedding, San-tam will cover the insured under the houseowners for building and household con-tents section of their personal policies,” hesaid.Coetzee advised people to try minimise

damage and loss during load sheddingusing the following tips:

. Alarm batteries: Most batteries willlast at least six hours, but they should betested regularly to ensure they are functio-ning properly;

. Electric fencing: An electric fenceshould have a back-up battery, which needsto be tested regularly and replaced if nee-ded;

. Arriving or leaving home: Home ow-ners should be alert when arriving or lea-ving homewhen street lighting and outsidelighting is not functioning;

. Automated gates and garage doors: Ho-me owners should ensure they have alter-native ways to enter and exit their home ifelectric security gates and garage doors arenot functioning due to load shedding;

. Contact your security company: If con-sumers feel unsafe at any time during a po-wer failure, they should contact their secu-rity company emergency number.

Super Mamas wil vroue bemagtig

Michelle was vir vyf jaar in ’n verhouding

bel in stukkies geskeur en my familie een-kant toe geskuif.

Hy was ernstig. Hy het my ’n pen enpapier gegee en gedwing om ’n selfmoord-brief aan my ouers te skryf,” vertel sy.Michelle onthou veral hoe verwronge sy

gesig vanwoede vertrek was.

Vaselinetjie word aangebied in sa-

Eskom’s struggles to copewith electricity demand putsyour computer equipment atrisk.“PCs are sensitive to pow-

er cuts, power dips and pow-er surges, so take the neces-sary steps to protect them,”says Daryl Blundell, generalmanager at Sage Pastel Ac-counting.“When Eskom cuts the

power, you could not onlylose the latest changes to thefiles you’reworking on, youropen files could become socorrupted you will not beable to restore them,” he add-ed.As a result, Blundell has

offered five ways you canprotect your computerequipment and data.

Regular backupsKeep your latest data

backed up so that you do notlose hours of work or any im-portant information whenthe power goes out. Regulardata backups are a must. Ifpossible, invest in an offsitebackup system. Data back-ups are kept safe on secureservers and can be accessedwherever you have an Inter-net connection.

Invest in UninterruptiblePower Supplies (UPS)In the event of a power fail-

ure or load shedding, a UPSgives users time to exit appli-cations and save work be-fore they safely shut downtheir PCs. Even if you have

generators, they’ll take a fewseconds to kick in after apower failure – a UPS willprevent them from losingpower before you’ve savedyour work.A backup power inverter

system is another option. For less than R10 000 you canfind one that will keep yourrouters, a couple of comput-ers and some lights going fora few hours.

Switch off all PC’s notperforming critical functionsAny data open on a PC is

at risk of being damaged orcorrupted in the event of apower failure. You need toget into the habit of closingapplications and shuttingdown desktop computerswhen not in use.

Switch off PCs and unplugthemTo reduce the risk of dam-

age to hardware, switch offyour PCs and unplug themfrom the main power sourcewhen power cuts hit. Other-wise, power surges couldcause damage.

Consider investing in apower bankApower bank can be inval-

uable for managing yourbusiness when there is loadshedding. These portablechargers let you top up thebattery of yourUSB-poweredmobile devices so you cankeep going when there is along power outage. – Fin24

pery slide by die kerkbraai verlede somer.

Heksie (Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck) is

nou rugby gespeel.

Hannes vanWyk as koning Ro-

sekrans is behoorlik dof en bewerig, die fe-eprinses (Zanne Stapelberg) kook letterliken figuurlik ’n storm los en Karel Kat ka-termaai soos ’n ware heer.Matewis (Luca Human) is opvreetbaar,

is wonderlik.

Lizz Meiring se regie is so vrolik soos

Karting classes clash at Killarney

Thousands of runners will gather at up toforty destinations on six continents to takepart in the secondWings for Life World Runon 3May,withCapeTownone of the destina-tions.The run starts at exactly the same time

across the world, with a catcher car settingoff thirtyminutes after the start at each loca-tion, with the aim being to outrun the cat-cher car.As long as you stay in front of the catcher

car, you’re still in the race. The minute thecatcher car passes you, however, your raceis over. This continues until a single manand woman are left running. Whoever orwherever they are, they will be crownedchampions of the Wings for Life World Run.The Wings for Life World Run is not all

fun and games though. It’s a fund-raising

event hosted by international not-for-profit,Wings for Life, which funds scientific rese-arch and clinical trials around the globe inthe hope of finding a cure for spinal cord in-juries.The run is formen andwomen, young and

old, first-time runners, running fanatics andprofessional athletes. There is nothing stop-ping anyone, no matter their fitness level orability, to stand at the starting line on 3May.The entry fee for the South African leg of

the run is R250, with every cent finding itsway to research funding. TheWings for LifeFoundation also allocates 100% of all otherproceeds to finding a cure for spinal cord in-juries.The last person standing will not only win

bragging rights anda trophy, but also aonce-in-a-lifetime trip around the world.

The South African Karting Champi-onship heads to Killarney on Satur-day for the first of three blockbuster

meetings that include all national kar-ting classes.Action should be fraught on the circuit

as the RotaxMax classes embark on nati-onal championship openers, while theVortex Rok and IAME X30 classes moveinto their second rounds. It’s an important race for RotaxMax as

its classes switch to new Evo specificati-on engines, but it will be interesting whe-ther the karts will be faster consideringrecent resurfacing at the Killarney karttrack. Faster or not, Rotax Max officiallyenters a new era with its improved andmore driver friendly power plants, andyou can expect action of the highest orderas leading competitors from the Cape,Gauteng, Eastern Province and KwazuluNatal gather for their first national show-down of the year. The high school age Junior Max 125s

are bound to offer among the biggestrouts of the day as local starsDelanoFow-ler (SuprocomTony), Dino Stermin (RKTDesigner Trims Kosmic), Giordano Lupi-ni (AutoWeek CRG), Sebastian Boyd(BoydFreightKosmic) andJasonCoetzee(Kosmic), amongotherCape stars, defendlocal honour against upcountry rivals.Stiff opposition is sure to come from Jo-

hannesburg rivals such as Birel trio De-lon Thompson (A&L), Cameron O’Con-nor and Joshua Diaz; and KZN lads Dani-el Duminy (Birel) and Dominic Lincoln(Tony). Any of those ten, or any one ofseveral dark horses canwin on Saturday.Moving a step up to the 125cc Senior

Max mob, Cape ace Jonathan Aberdein(Tony) will want to continue his domi-

nance from the recent Killarney regionalbut Fabienne Lanz (Formula K) will bedoing everything in her power to preventher dad’s former race rival’s son from ta-king home glory. They’ll also have to dealwith Cape crew Eugene Denyssen (SA-KRA Tony), Suprocom Tony siblings De-lanoand IsabelleFowler,HenryBam(SA-KRA Kosmic), Chadley Swartz (SAKRA

Kosmic), and Jozi drivers Shannon Jack-son (CRG) and Robert Whiting (Tony).Another spectacular fight will be the

two-speed gearbox Rotax DD2s, where lo-cal heroes Jonathan Aberdein (Tony),Umpie Swart (Indy Oil Birel) and Jona-than Thomas (Partners Hair CRG) willface Gauteng gang, CRG drivers EugeneBrittz and Chad MacIver, Bradley Lie-benberg (Birel) and Intrepid-mountedNatalians Luca Canderle and ChadMacI-ver for glory on a star studded grid. SA’sfour-time world champion CristianoMorgado (CRG) will be the man to beatin the DD2 Masters national challengeclass, with Nick and Jennifer Verheulamong those out to stop him.If you think DD2 is going to be a race

to remember, be prepared for a primaryschool kart war in the 60cc Maxterinoswhere upcountry hopefuls will be out toupturn dominant local honour. AidanStrydom (TurboTechTopkart) Charl Vis-ser (BatteryEnergyKosmic), JosephOelz(Clear/GoPro CRG), Tate Bishop (TPBKosmic), Tyler Croy (Zanardi) and TroyDolinschek (MakitaTopKart) are thekidsto beat on home turf, but sadly for them, that won’t deter Gauteng visitors Kwan-da Mokoena (SD Topkart), Josh de Paiva,Tyron Donker (Mini-Maxi Topkart) andCameron O’Connor (Birel), as well asKZN kids Tristan Losch (Flandria) andLiamdeBeer (CRG) from trying to loosenCape Town’ grip on the class.

Belharwas in ’nverwoestendebui teendie
