“Ek is getraumatiseer, ja.Vir aande lank het ek net ge-weerskote in my geestesooggesien as ek gaan slaap... niedie bloed en die wond nie,maar die skote... so een na dieander.”

Sy sien egter daarna uit om sodra sy heel-temal genees het, terug te gaan na haar kol-lekteerwerk.

“Daardie spot is ’n lekker spot. Ek sal te-ruggaan soontoe, maar nie vir nog ’n skootnie,” sê sy.

Volgens lt. Kevin Williams, woordvoerdervan Parow-polisie, is vyf geldtasse tydensdie voorval gesteel met altesaam R127 000 sekontant in. ’n Saak van gewapende roof enpoging tot moord is aanhangig gemaak. Diegeorganiseerde misdaad-tak van die polisiesal die saak verder ondersoek, sê hy.

’n Afgetrede polisieman het Maandag ver-skyn in die Blue Downs-landdroshof op aan-klagte van verkragting.

Die saak hou verband met die beweerdeverkragting van ’n minderjarige seun.

Die saak is Vrydag by die Kraaifontein-po-

lisie aangemeld.Dit volg nadat sewe minderjariges, tussen

die ouderdomme van 6 en 11 jaar, na beweringoor ’n tydperk van drie jaar seksueel aange-rand is, het Francois Asia, ’n gemeenskaps-ontwikkelaar by die organisasie HeavenlyPromise Community Project in Summerville,Kraaifontein gesê.

Volgens hom het een van die seuns se ouers

die voorval onder sy aandag gebring.Die projek, volgens Asia, behandel mis-

handelde vroue, kinders en dwelmver-slaafdes. “As enigiets gebeur, doen ons dieverwysings en kontak die polisie. Daar-vandaan neem die departement van maat-skaplike ontwikkeling dit verder,” hetAsia verduidelik.

Hy het gesê ’n ouer wat saam met die pro-jek werk se seun is ook een van die slagof-fers.

“Die seuns beweer dat hulle die beamptevir kos genader het en dat hy hulle dan kosen werk aangebied het. Hulle beweer ookdat hulle by sy huis gestort het en dat hulledaarna seksueel aangerand sou word. Hyhet hulle glo kos en geld gegee,” het Asiagesê. Hy het gesê daar is reeds onderhoudemet al die betrokke seuns – almal van dieScottsdene-woonbuurt – gevoer.

Asia het Vrydag ’n saak by die polisie seeenheid teen gesinsgeweld, kindermishan-deling en seksuele aanranding by dieKraaifontein-polisiekantoor aanhangig ge-maak.

Kapt. Frederick van Wyk, provinsialepolisiewoordvoerder, het bevestig dat hul-le ’n klagte van verkragting teen ’n voor-malige polisiebeampte ondersoek.

Die persoon, volgens hom, was glo ’n lidvan die Bellville-polisie.

Van Wyk kon egter nie sê hoe oud die be-trokke persoon is, en wanneer hy uit diepolisiediens getree het nie.

Hy het bevestig dat die eenheid teen ge-sinsgeweld, kindermishandeling en seksu-ele aanranding die saak ondersoek.

“So ver word een saak ondersoek. Die an-der beweringe gaan opgevolg en daarna on-dersoek word,” het hy gesê.

Die suster van die vermeende leier van dieSexy Boys-bende, Jerome “Donkie” Booy-sen, is verlede Dinsdag saam met drie andermense by die huis in Kronkelstraat, Boston,Bellville in hegtenis geneem. Die huis is inhaar naam geregistreer. Die ander verdag-tes was haar man, ’n 15-jarige seun en nog’n man, wat glo ’n lyfwag is.

“Wat hulle ook al gedoen het, het hullegoed gedoen, want die mense in daardie om-gewing is nogal verbasend paraat,” sê hy.

“Georganiseerde misdaad is glad nie goedvir enige buurt nie. Veral met dwelms. Ditis baie naby aan die Hoërskool D.F. Malanen ’n paar jaar gelede het ons groot problemegehad by die voetbrug oor die Elsieskraalri-viertjie met dwelmverkopery en -misbruik.Ek sê nie dit is verwant aan hierdie saak nie,maar dit kan ’n oorspoeling daarvan wees,”sê hy.

Reservis’n Reservis wat in die omgewing werk, sê

’n mens vermoed dat daar dwelmhuise inenige area kan wees, “maar hierdie was ’nverrassing. Ek dink dit is omdat hulle sekernie dwelms daar verkoop het nie. Dit was net’n wegsteekplek. So ons het nie daarvan ge-weet nie, want daar was nie baie voete nie.Mense sê dit is die 28’s in Mitchell’s Plainwat hulle verklik het,” sê hy.

Kapt. F.C. van Wyk, die polisie se provinsi-ale woordvoerder, het vroeër bevestig daarword vermoed dat die Sexy Boys dwelms naMitchell’s Plain versprei.

“Ons sal maar sien wat gebeur met die hof-saak. Daar sal seker een of ander tegniesepunt wees wat hulle vryspreek. Dit is mosdeesdae eerder die polisieman as die krimi-neel wat in die beskuldigdebank staan. Maaraan die ander kant, hoe kan hulle nié vervolgword nie?” is ’n ander buurman se mening.

Rashied Staggie, voormalige leier van dieHard Livings, het ook jare gelede in 15deLaan, Boston gewoon.

Die 15-jarige seun is ná sy arrestasie geas-sesseer en weer vrygelaat. Taresa Small isop borgtog van R20 000 vrygelaat en die tweemans is in aanhouding in die Pollsmoor-ge-vangenis. Hulle verskyn almal weer môre indie Bellville-landdroshof op aanklag vandwelmbesit en besit van ’n ongelisensieerdevuurwapen. Die volwassenes sal ook inge-volge die Kinderwet vervolg word.

Inwoners van Wagenaarstraat in MonteVista moes van September tot Novemberskoon water in emmers en kanne in hul

huise aanhou, terwyl die 650 m lange, 57jaar oue asbeswaterpyp in die straat ver-sterk sou word.

Die asbeswaterpype is in 1957 geïnstal-leer en inwoner Johan Marais sê dit het allankal begin lek en breek. Die stadsraad hetin 2013 besluit om ’n beskermende omhul-sing rondom die pyp aan te bring om dit teversterk.

’n Ongedateerde brief van die stadsraadwat die inwoners in hul posbusse gekry het,het gewaarsku dat die werk moontlik onge-rief sou veroorsaak en dat die watertoevoervan tyd tot tyd afgesluit sou wees. Volgensdie brief sou werk teen 8 November voltooiwees.

ProjekDie projek is nog steeds nie klaar nie.Teen 13 Desember het werkers hul tuie

neergelê en die span sou, volgens JVR-Kon-struksiese se bestuur wat die projek behar-tig, weer 13 Januarie begin. Die pyp het ge-durende Desember plek-plek gelek, toege-gooide slote het begin insak en inwoners isin die algemeen raadop met hoe hulle straatlyk.

“Dieselfde aansluitingspunte is al agtkeer oop- en toegemaak sonder om ’n oplos-sing te vind,” sê Marais, ’n afgetrede projek-bestuurder van Telkom. Marais het sy lewelank aan groot projekte gewerk en sê hyweet as hy knoeiwerk sien. Volgens hom isdaar geen impaktoetsing op die slote gedoenom te verseker dat dit versterk en gekom-pakteer is volgens spesifikasie nie.

“Daar is ook geen gehaltebeheer nie. Toehulle hier gewerk het was daar geen padte-kens of vlae of afskortings om die slote nie.Nou maak die toegegooide slote vore, en be-

soekers is verplig om in inrypaaie te par-keer. Toe die werkers nog hier was, het nu-we randstene in die straat rondgelê. Ek isnie bewus daarvan dat daar ooit enige ter-reinbesoeke of gehaltekontrole was nie,”beweer hy. Marais beklemtoon dit dat hynie kla omdat hy verveeld is of ’n naam wilmaak vir homself nie. Met sy ervaring van36 jaar as operasionele bestuurder by Tel-kom, kan hy sien dat hierdie projek op ’nsteil afdraande is.

Aanbevelings“Ek het vir jare met stadsbeplanners, in-

genieurs en groot konstruksiemaatskappyesaamgewerk,” sê hy.

Op 26 November het hy ’n brief met aan-bevelings aan die projekbestuurder vanJVR-Konstruksie gestuur, waar hy ondermeer voorspel het dat die slote binne tweejaar sal begin insak as dit nie reg gekompak-teer word nie. Sy brief is met stilte begroeten sy voorspelling het intussen reeds waargeword met slote wat een na die ander in-sak, veral ná vanjaar se vroeë reën.

“Die padkruisings by Imhoff, De La Fon-teine en Duinhoop is in ’n skokkende toe-stand. Dit beteken die padkruising is uitge-ry wat ons motors beskadig,” sê Marais.

Lauren Zimri van JVR-Konstruksie hetnamens hulle bestuur gesê die projek inWagenaarstraat is op 13 Januarie weer vol-tyds hervat. Sy sê daar word voorsien datJVR teen 31 Januarie klaar sal wees.

“Ons is besig om die laaste gedeelte vandie nuwe waterlyn te toets. Uitstaande teer-werk sal volg nadat alle pype getoets is enalle waterkonneksies gedoen is. Die water-toevoer sal vir kort periodes onderbreekword.Aangesiendit noodafdraaie is, sal onsdie inwoners mondelings inlig en genoegsa-me tyd gee om byvoorbeeld emmers watervol te maak,” het sy bygevoeg.

Sy het gesê JVR wil nie op enige bewe-rings van swak gehaltebeheer van die pro-jek kommentaar lewer nie.

Fourteen years after a chance meetingwith a localmusician that changed hislife, Durbanville resident, Hamish De-

al, has found a way to say thank you.English-speaking Hamish recently deli-

vered three framedR20notes to local singerRooies, along with the story of how he tou-ched his life, as thanks for introducing himto Afrikaans music, a genre he has now fal-len in love with.

“In 2000 I was outside my home in Brac-kenfell, watering my garden, when thiswhite van drove past,” Hamish recalls onthe back of the framed notes he gave toRooies.

He says he noticed the branding on thevehicle and thought he’d ask the driver ifhe played birthday parties as his was co-ming up.

When he stopped the driver, Rooies gotout and opened the back of the van to handHamishaCD, itwasBulshoekDam, his firstalbum.

Rooies said if he liked the albumhe couldpay him R60 later.

“It was actually just a joke,” Rooies says

shyly, but Hamish says he had to let himknow what the meeting meant to him.

“I wasn’t listening to Afrikaans at all,”he says, adding: “Hewasn’t aware of the im-pact he had made on my life.”

“I’ve been wanting to do it for a long ti-me,” Hamish says, referring to “paying”Rooies back for the CD.

Hearing Rooies every day on Bok Radiois what Hamish said made him decide toput thought into action.

After noticing that he’d taken an interestin Afrikaans music, Hamish says his Afri-kaans neighbour supplied him with lots ofAfrikaans DVDs, which is where his fasci-nation began.

“Iwas exposed to differentAfrikaansmu-sic,” Hamish says, adding: “When you lis-ten to it, it’s like listening to a story thatjust contains music.”

He describes the music, especially Rooi-es’ as natural, and says it’s like listeningto someone tell a story.

Party leerders het hul presta-sies sonder veel moeite behaal, maar vir diemeerderheid het dit reuse-deursettingsver-moë gekos.In 2013 was daar 182 matrieks by die Hoër-

skool Tygerberg. Twee leerders kon weensmediese redes nie hul eksamen voltooi nieen het vir aanvullende eksamens in Februa-rie/Maart geregistreer.Van die oorblywende 180 het 175 geslaag

en almal vanhulle kwalifiseer vir een tersiê-re opleiding: 63.3%vir graadkursusse, 30.6%vir diplomakursusse en 3.3% vir hoër serti-fikaatkursusse.“Ons doelwit in 2013 was om die gehalte

van die uitslae te verbeter deur ’n hoër per-sentasie leerders te lewer wat kwalifiseervir graadkursusse en daarin het die klas van2013 met groot sukses voldoen,” sê WilmaRossouw, adjunkhoof van akademie.“Hierdie persentsie het met 5.2% gestyg

van 2012 af. 78% van alle vakuitslae was bo50%, met 12% van alle uitslae wat bo 80%was.“In 16 vandie vakkewat die skool aanbied,

is ’n 100%-slaagsyfer behaal en in 22 vakkewas die skool se gemiddeld bo die WKOD-mediaan vir daardie vakke – ’n uitstekendepluimpie vir die gehalte van die onderwy-sers se onderrig en die werkywer van dieleerders wat hierdie geleenthede aangryp,”sê Rossouw.Daar was 10 leerders wat met A-gemiddel-

Parow High’s matrics of 2013 improved theschool’s pass rate by 4 % from the previousyear.In total 201 matriculants were in matric

in 2013 and 196 of them passed.“We are very proud of our pass rate and

matriculants, especially because it im-proved from 91 % to 95 % from last year,”

says Johann Götze, head of Grade 12.“What pleases usmost is that the percent-

age for a bachelor pass raised from 47 % in2012 to 68 % last year,” Götze said.He says the reason for this is most likely

that the strategy from the school was adapt-ed to focus on individual needs of the learn-ers.

’n Spinnekopbyt wat aanvanklik klei-ner as ’n muskietbyt was, het amperRobert Haupt van Valmarypark in

Durbanville se hand gekos.“Eers het ek niks daarvan gedink nie,

maar ’n dag later het ek skielik gesien dieplek swel. Daardie nag drie-uur het ek myvrou wakker gemaak ommy na die ongeval-le-afdeling van die Mediclinic Durbanvillete neem.” Hy kon sien daar was groot fout.Die dokter het hom ’n kortisoon- en anti-

histamien-inspuiting gegee en huis toe ge-stuur met ’n voorskrif vir antibiotika.Dit was die begin van dae van pyn, her-

haalde doktersbesoeke en gerusstelling vandié dokters dat hy goeie behandeling kry,maar later ’n hand en ’n arm wat steeds gro-ter swel. Elke dokter het die bytplek, wateers soos ’n klein geel puisie gelyk het, ge-druk en dit het al seerder geraak.

OpgeneemHy is uiteindelik in die Mediclinic Dur-

banville opgeneem. Ondanks die feit datHaupt een van die mees omvattende medie-sefondsplanne het en hy na ’n private hospi-taal gegaan het, voel hy sy toestand is nieernstig genoeg opgeneem nie.Op die vierde dag ná die byt is daar nog

soos ’n hond hanteer is. “Ons as pasiënte istandeloos as ons voel ons word nie reg be-handel nie. Dit word eenvoudig net afge-maak,” sê hy.Dit is nou byna vier weke ná die operasie

en sy hand word stadig beter, maar hy krysteekpyne “soos brandende naalde”. Vol-gens dr. David Rodseth, wat die operasie be-hartig het, beteken dit die senuwees beginweer heg.

kaal behandel,” sêMuller.Hy sêmensewordbaie gebyt deur spinnekoppe en as die wondstukkend gekrap word, kan dit baie maklikgeïnfekteer raak. En selfs dít kan een van 20moontlike diagnoseswees, sê hy. Six “Golden Circle” tickets for MadameZingara and a special gift hamper all worthR3 850 were raffled at the Edgemead Christ-masMarket last year to help raise funds forCapetonians Against Animal Abuse(CAAA).

The Edgemead Christmas Market helpedraise R12 765 for the CAAA, of which R430represented donations made by the public.

CAAA does not have a shelter. Insteadthey rely onvolunteers tohelp foster the an-imals that they care for. Currently this or-ganisation is looking after approximately

320 stray and abandoned animals in theCape Town area including Brooklyn,Paarden Eiland, Willowbridge, Durban-ville, Cape Gate, the airport, Epping andnear Fisantekraal.

Most of the animals that they care for arecats, but they also provide help for dogs.Ac-cording to Cindy Washington of CAAA,about 65 % of the funds raised by the Edge-mead ChristmasMarket will be used to testferal cats for feline Aids and leukaemia.The remaining funds will be used to assistwith neutering and feeding programmes.

On the Saturday before NewYear my wife’s car broke downoutside Bellville mall. Manykind people helped to push andtow the car but to no avail.They then pushed it under atree in the shade while shewaited for an emergency start.While waiting, she was

attacked by a street-dwellerwho managed to get his arminto the car and release thedoor lock. He then tried tograb her bag but did notrealise that it was strappedaround her waist. He almostpulled her from the car beforethe strap broke and he took off.We would like to thank the

couple in the van who allowedmy wife to call me and 10111and also drove around theblock to look for the thief andreturned to the scene.The SAPS arrived slightly

In just a few weeks, the face of Bellvilleactor Sean CameronMichael, will be on50 million screens across the world.Sean will be staring in a new television

series, Black Sails, which premiers in theUnited States on the Starz channel laterthis month.But Black Sails is just the tip of the ice-

berg for this local who is busy making in-roads in Hollywood.The series, set in 1715,which is essential-

ly about a group of pirates who take overan island, was shot in Cape Town and Seanplays the role of Richard Guthrie, a black

marketer.“He’s this ruthless, powerful, dangerous

smuggler,” Sean explains, joking that hewas a little disappointed at not being ableto play one of the swashbuckling pirates.“Probably one of the most challenging

things was walking around in high heels,”Sean jests.

Call backHe first auditioned for the role in late

2012. “It was quite a hectic audition,” Seansays, explaining that he was shooting inDurban at the time and had to fly back toCape Town with only four hours to try andlearn lines. “It reallywasn’t a very goodau-dition,” he recalls.

But, despite this, hegot a call back. Sean ex-plains thatwhenproduc-tion houses shoot inSouthAfrica, theyusual-ly cast international ac-tors in their lead roles,so it would be rare thata South African wouldbe chosen.“It’s the reality of the

business,” Sean states,adding: “I knew it wouldbe unlikely that I got therole.”Sean was in Johannes-

burg, working on TheChallenger Disaster, a feature film for theScience Channel, when he got a phone callfrom his agent to say he’d been shortlistedfor the part.In between this castingprocess, Seanhas

also received an email inviting him tojudge for the Emmy Awards. “I thought itwas an early April fool’s joke,” Sean ad-mits.South African viewers may recognise

Sean as drug dealer Brett in Egoli and asMiles Stuart in the local version of theshow,This Life. He also played the support-ing role of Fergus Buchan in the localmov-ie Faith Like Potatoes.

BaddiesSean has also had roles in a number of

international series andmovies, but it washis role as a United Nations workerCharles Solenz, in themade for TV feature,24: Redemption, that gave him his break.“I always end up playing baddies,” Sean

says, adding that he tries to look for simi-larities between himself and the characterin order to find the character’s vulnerabili-ty. “I believe the secret to playing a charac-ter is to find a truth,” Sean says.His character in Black Sails is a father

and although Sean has no children of hisown, he used his relationship with hisniece as a reference.

FortunateIt was 11:30 at night when the casting di-

rector herself called Sean to let him knowhe got the part in Black Sails.Sean, who went to Bosmansdam High

School in Bothasig, hasbeen acting since the ageof 12. His mother was adancer and his fatherwas an opera singer andSean says: “I alwaysknew this was what Iwant to do, I was reallyfortunate in that sense.”During a recent holi-

day in America, Seanmanaged to get himselfsigned to one of the topagents in Hollywood.He explains that in the

US, it is unheard of for anactor to call an agent. In-

stead, an actormust be referred to an agentwho will meet with the actor and then de-cide if they want to work with him.When he happened to be going overseas

last year, he decided he had nothing to loseandaskedKevinMcNally,whohadworkedwith him on The Challenger Disaster tospeak to his agent. McNally replied with anumber, saying his agent wanted to meethim.“I eventually pluckedup the courage and

phoned this agent,” Sean recalls, remem-bering how it took a couple of tries beforehe got through.The meeting was held in an impressive

skyscraper of a building and Sean ex-plains: “What proceeded was an hour-longmeeting discussing my career.”

hewas soon signed to SMSTalent inBever-ly Hills.“For a boytjie from Bellville to walk into

his first meeting in Hollywood and getsigned, that’s pretty cool,” Sean says.As soon as Sean finishes filming season

The Daniel and Friends Fund that wasrecently formed to honour the life ofyoung Daniel le Roux from Uitzicht,

will be hosting a fundraiser on Valentine’sDay. Daniel passed away in August lastyear at only three and a half years old.He was born with Leigh’s syndrome, a

neurometabolic disorder that affects thecentral nervous system.The illness saw the boy fight many bat-

tles in hospital and he was improving athome until a bout of bronchitis was just toomuch for his little body.The Daniel and Friends Fund, a non prof-

it organisation,was startedbyDaniel’s doc-tor, paediatrician Professor Pieter Fourie.When Daniel was diagnosed, his parents

decided that if they could help one child orparent, he would not have died in vain.This is what they intend to do with the

fund.The fund’s aim is to support disabled chil-

dren, together with their parents and/orcaregivers and to equip parents with thenecessary skills to be able to take care oftheir children, and educate and raiseawareness in the public.The Daniel and Friends Fund directors

also include Lianie le Roux, Kate Laurieand Marilyn Conradie. Additional mem-bers include Pieter Fourie, Nico Waltersand Anne-Mart Muller.Marilyn has two disabled children, Jo-

Durbanville songwriter Paddy Gobelwas so moved by the plight of rhinosin South Africa, he wrote a song,

which has now been heard all around theworld.Paddy’s “Rhino Requiem”, speaks of the

cruelty of rhino poaching and with it, hehopes to create awareness about the situa-tion.“I wrote ‘Rhino requiem’ out of a deep

seated pain at the killing of rhinos,” Paddysays adding: “And sometimes that’s the bestplace to write from.”He wrote the song with

the idea of offering it toconservation organisa-tions toutilise in their anti-poaching campaigns.“Musically youcanget to

a person’s heart veryquickly,” Paddypoints out.“It really gets to people interms of the terrible cruel-ty of poaching,” he says.Paddy recorded the song and posted it on

YouTube, and the video has already beenviewedmore than 51 000 times. “I can’t han-dle my email,” he says of the number of re-sponses he has received for the song so far.

took up a lot of his time, Paddy returned tohis first love, lyric writing, about threeyears ago.He points out that he is frustrated with

the state of the South African music indus-try, particularly the lack of support for lyricwriters.“The lyricist has been neglected here,” he

says. “They don’t seem to see the benefit of

working with a lyricist,” he adds, referringto singers and record labels.

SongwritersPaddy points out that there are people

who are good lyricists, but not singers, butsays the onlyway for a songwriter to get hismusic heard locally is to try and performtheir songs themselves, as opposed to over-seas where there is a big market for song-writers who do just that.“My ultimate goal is to form some sort of

society,” Paddy says. He hopes to be able tobring local lyricists together to get theirvoices, or songs, heardandencourages local

artists to work with localsongwriters.“I’m out to prove that

with a good singer and agood song,we can crack theinternational market,” hesays, pointing to the factthat there has never reallybeen a South African sing-er that has been commer-cially successful abroad.

Paddy says the best way for a lyricist toget himself out there is to write around asinger, using Elton John and BernieTaupin, who is best known for writing forElton John.When Paddy gets an idea for a song, he

creates the music digitally, before record-ing his own voice over it, before giving itto a singer to perform. “I use that as a visit-ing card,” he says, explaining that his re-cording then gives the singer an idea ofwhat emotion and nuances to bring into thesong. One song for a singer can make you,”Paddy says, who is comfortable writing anygenre from gospel to rock.Paddy hopes to one day hear “Rhino Req-

With the new school year starting soon, thecity’s Social Development and Early Child-hood Development Directorate urges par-ents to check that the ECD Centre they en-rol their children in, is registered with theWestern Cape Government’s Departmentof Social Development.

The primary objective of the city’s EarlyChildhood Development (ECD) Depart-ment is to create awareness about statutoryECD registration compliance so that par-ents, Early Childhood Development practi-tioners, caregivers and communities arewell-informed.

The city’s mayoral committee memberfor social development and early childhooddevelopment, Suzette Little, said parentsshould make sure that the facility theirchildren are enrolled at, is not just a day-care centre where their children eat, sleepand play. The facility needs to offer activi-ties that will stimulate the child’s develop-ment and must be in a position to assesswhether they understand the conceptstaught to them.

“These assessments are put in place tomake sure that children understand thelearning concepts which will enhance theirability to grasp concepts at school,” Littlesaid.

According to her, there are many ECD fa-cilities that remain unregistered as a resultof being unable to fully comply with the re-quirements.

“Audits will be conducted on registeredand unregistered ECD Centres in the cityin conjunction with the Western Cape gov-ernment to better understand the effective-ness of specific centres. Assistance will beprovided to non-complying ECD Centres,”said Little.

Lenses and Shutters as Witnesses, a collab-orative exhibition between the National Li-brary of South Africa (NLSA) and the CapeTown Photographic Society (CTPS) is cur-rently on at the National Library.

The exhibition touches on the historyand introduction of photography to SouthAfrica, with an emphasis on the city of CapeTown and photographs from 1853 onwards.

The library will be displaying examplesof the various photographic processeswhich are available, including examples ofphotographic negatives, glassplates, da-guerrotypes and stereographs.

Photographic prints have been selectedto showcase the beginning of photographyin South Africa, while focusing on centralCape Town.

Also to be seen in the exhibition will beexamples of early photographic equipmenton loan from the Cape Town PhotographicSociety.

A selection of books on the history of pho-tography, catalogues, and very rare Africa-na “Views of Cape Town” will also be putout on display.

Also to be touched on is the library’s SirJohn Herschel Collection. Herschel trav-elled to South Africa to catalogue the stars,nebulae, and other objects of the southernskies. In a move away from astronomy, Her-schel together with his wife, produced 131botanical illustrations of Cape flora of avery high quality.

Hershel is also responsible for applyingthe terms negative and positive to photog-raphy.V The exhibition runs until 31 March and is openMonday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 09:00to 16:00 and Wednesdays from 10:00 to 16:00. Entrance is free.

A 14-week-long course to teach membersof the public Xhosa as well as the culturaldifferences surrounding the language, isset to start tomorrow.The course is presented by Dr Philip

Lewis who holds a doctoral degree inXhosa andwhohas been teaching the lan-guage to beginners for the past 32 years.One 14-week-long conversational

course will start tomorrow January 16and another is set to start Tuesday 21 Jan-uary. Classes will be held at the Bellvillelibrary where it has been done for thepast 15 years. Each contact session, ac-cording to Lewis, is 75 minutes long.“We focus mainly on the conversation-

al component of the language in order toget people talking, but also teach themabout the cultural aspects of the lan-guage,” Lewis said.He said the course is centred around

enlightening people about the culturaldifferences of Xhosa speaking people inthe country.The course is provisionally credited by

Umalusi.“That means the students are awarded

With a movie appearance and national air-play, DirtyFunk say their hard work isshowing rewards.

“It’s been a long journey but it’s finallypaying off,” says DJ and producer DaleJohnson, the creator of the music project.Rapper, singer and dancer AndreMachent,makes up the other half of the group.

The group are originally from Kuils Riv-er, but are now based in Goodwood.

The two recently played rappers in aWarner Brothersmovie,House Party 5. Themovie hasn’t hit South African shores yet,but was released last year in America.

The movie also gave them the opportuni-ty to work on a song with internationalstars Julian Works, Keith Powers and Te-quan Richmond (from the TV show, Every-body Hates Chris).

Their song, “Geechy” has been playingon Good Hope FM, Bush Radio, YFM andKhozi FM.

Dale explains the song title: “You knowhow guys say they have Swag?Well Geechyis taking it to the next level.”

Last year the group also released thesong, “Rockstar”, featuring Jack Parowand Ebi. The song was playlisted locallyand made it to number seven on 5FM’s hip-hop chart and number one on Kovsie Fmin Bloemfontein.

Their latest offering, “Drop Top”, fea-tures the voice of Reece Faure, and Dalesays it has more of a summer feel.

The music video was filmed locally andhas already been released. “It highlightslandmarks in Cape Town,” Dale explains.

DirtyFunk say they are nearly done withtheir album and are hoping to release it inJune this year.

“I’m the kind of guy who likes to take mytime,” Dale says, explaining why it’s takenso long to release an album. “I playwhatwould be called sort of neo-folk finger style which involves somepercussive stuff on the guitar body.”

That’s how local singer/songwriter, DaveKnowles, describes his music.“I’m also a composer and a guitar teacher,

but for the last seven years, I consider thisto be how I express myself,” he adds.“My music, I like to think, has a lot of

soul,” Dave says.He explains that he only writes when he

feels he has something to say, or somethinghe needs to say.“If I have a song that doesn’t quite sit right

in one part, I abandon it,” he points out, re-ferring to his compositions.While his songs have elements of blues,

folk and rock, Dave says each song is its ownsound.Dave has been living in Kenilworth in

CapeTown for about twoyears, aftermovingfrom Grahamstown where he was studyingmusic, history and philosophy.Before that, he had travelled with his pre-

vious band to Manchester, England, wherethe band played for a year.

Humbling“I was in an indie-rock band, round about

the time of Tweak and The Finkelsteins, sowe didn’t exactly fit the local market,” Daveexplains.“It was a very amazing and humbling ex-

perience when your realise you are one of4 000 bands that are just as good, if not betterthan you,” he says of his travels with theband.Dave explains he left the band because

while he knew they would be successful, hedidn’t feel it would be on his own terms.“Iwanted to know that ifwemade it, itwas

because it was themusic I wanted to bemak-

ing,” he points out.So Dave got an acoustic guitar and moved

to clean rooms in backpackers in London.Dave says while his studies helped him

understandmusic theory and compositionalelements, it didn’t teach himhow to express.“The way I was expressing was unique to

me and it wasn’t something I was beingtaught,” he explains.

PerformanceDave says he found himself trying to un-

learn the “fastidious, theoretical” aspects hehad learnt in terms of his performance, buthe also tries to go back to that when he isteaching.A fond career memory for Dave is playing

in a band called The Bourgeois Ninja Club.“We opened for Wonderboom in Graham-

stownandourwhole thingwas thatwemadeup our entire set,” Dave explains.“No one knewwhat wewere doing, but we

somehow pulled it off,” he recalls.Dave says his years inGrahamstownwere

some of the best of his musical journey ashe got to open for names likeAndrew James,Gary Thomas and he playedwith people likeMiles Sievwright and Guy Buttery.This helped Dave find his footing in the

Cape Town music industry when he movedhere, as he was able to book gigs with someof these names.“I thinkhere a lot of the highlights are still

to come,” Dave says.

AlbumDave has been working on an album at Af-

rican Sun Studios, which he hopes to releasein the next fewmonths. “The songs I’ve beenperforming solo for seven years are now go-ing to have an amazing orchestration,” hesays.The album’s tentative name is In Waking

Skin, although Dave says there’s a chance itcould still change.Dave says he would still like to broaden

his collaborations and play with more anddifferent musicians. He also hopes to find away to reintroduce social relevance intomu-sic by using his sociology background, to-gether with including other mediums,breaking the notions of standard perform-ance and performing in weird places inweird contexts.You can catch Dave performing live on 8

The Cape Town Tens, the world’s biggestTens tournament, is just one month away.

The tournament kicks off at Hamilton’sRugbyClubwith a gala dinner onThursdayevening 6 February and the rugby and net-ball games on 7 to 8 February.

With 100 social rugby teams playing upto 800 games over the weekend, as well asthe addition of 40 netball teams, Cape TownTens is set to be SA’s biggest social sportsevent of the year.

The tournament will be celebrating itssixth year anniversary andhas plenty of ex-citing new features planned.

Apart from the rugby and netball actionthere will be more on offer for the wholefamily including a revamped kiddies’ playarea with child minders, jumping castles,and magicians as well as specific rugby,

netball and cricket clinics tailored for thekids.

In addition to this there will be plentymore food options with the new 450m² FoodLovers’ Market tent, a massive beer tentand live entertainment throughout the dayby Tens favourites Me &Mr Brown and theincredible DJ Soxwhowill be keeping ener-gies high throughout the weekend.

Over the weekend catch an impressive2 000 rugby players take to the field spreadover seven divisions, whilst 400 netballplayers compete across four divisions.

Also get the chance to rub shoulders withvarious international and South Africanrugby legends such as John Smit, ButchJames, PercyMontgomery, Carlos Spencer,Justin Marshall and of course Tens found-ers Bob Skinstad and Rob Fleck.
