“We have to prioritise com-plaints,” says Lt Kevin Wil-liams of Parow police about

the stream of calls that reach the stationdaily. He says situations where lives arein danger obviously need response first,but the station has minimum deploymentbecause they have only four vehiclesavailable for the different sectors ofParow.

Williams responded to a general outcryfrom the public about Parow police whoapparently do not react to calls.

UnderstaffedThe Bellville, Parow, Goodwood and

Bothasig cluster has a total of 24 vehicles.Parow is just one of many police sta-

tions in the Western Cape that is severelyunderstaffed and in dire need of a betterinfrastructure.

This station has, for instance, only onecomputer with internet access.

“We need action now,” says Dan Plato,Minister of Community Safety in theWestern Cape Government. He has re-quested the Minister of police, Nathi

Mthethwa, to take immediate action toaddress shortages in the police force inthe Western Cape.

According to Plato, the Western Capehas the highest number of understaffedpolice stations and the largest personnelshortage overall.

At the same time, the number of reserv-ists deployed by the South African PoliceService in the Western Cape has been dec-imated since 2008 to a fraction of itsformer numbers.

In November 2013, Mthethwa told theNational Assembly that the Western Capehad a shortage of 1 012 members which ac-counts for 61 % of the national shortage.He also admitted that 128 out of 150 sta-tions in this province are understaffed.

Desperate“It is clear from the statistics provided

by Mthethwa’s department that the West-ern Cape is in desperate need of police re-sources and while we welcome the recentsteps to recruit some new officers, twoyears is too long to wait for these new re-cruits to be deployed onto our streets.”

He adds that if one looks at crime statis-tics, it is clear that under-resourcing isnegatively affecting crime in this prov-

ince.“The number of paid reservists used by

the police in the Western Cape hasdropped from 22 159 in 2008 to 2 759 in 2012.This is an 88 % decline and effectivelymeans that a police service of close to 40000 men and women patrolling the streetsof our province to make our people safe,has become less than half of that. At thesame time, there has been tremendousgrowth in the population size of the West-ern Cape (from 4,5 million to close to 6 mil-lion).

Attempted murder has skyrocketedsince 2008, from 1 776 to 3 280 last year.

Burglary at residential premises,which was on the decline up until 2008,saw a sharp increase from 42 000 in 2008to 49 599 last year.

Assault with intent to do grievous bodi-ly harm has increased from 23 086 in 2008to 24 519 last year.

“I have therefore urged Mthethwa tocall up existing police reservists – thereare 20 000 of them, in order to capacitatethe Western Cape police under the com-mand of General Arno Lamoer.

“Our provincial police cannot do theircore duties without sufficient resources,”Plato says.

Call to reinstate reservists

This year’s big cycle for people with DownSyndrome will see its 15th year spinningthe spokes between Bellville and George.

The affiliate of The Department of Cor-rectional Services’ (DCS) Goodwood CycleClub, the Mountain View Cycle Club willonce again take on this daunting task ofriding their bicycles for charity.

The riders will leave the Downs officesin Bellville at 08:00 on Monday 24 Februaryand end the tour in George on 28 Februaryat 13:00 – about 480 km later.

The group will travel back to Cape Townon 1 March.

The cycle club, which consists of sevencyclists and two non-cyclists with DownSyndrome, say their main aim is fundrais-ing and awareness. All funds raised willgo to the Down Syndrome Association.

On their route, the cyclists will stop atGordons Bay, Caledon, Riviersonderend,Swellendam, Heidelberg, Riversdal, Mos-sel Bay and then end in George.

There will be three sleepover points.They are urging all newspapers,

Good news for residents in Parow Valley isthat the fences of the tennis courts on thecorner of Piet Retief and Duncan streetshave been fixed.

The Department of Sport and Recreationhas committed R100 000 to improve the ten-nis courts, swimming pool and the clubhouse in Parow Valley.

The club house, which used to belong tothe WP darts club, has been abandoned forsome time and has since become an eyesoreas it has been stripped by vandals.

Ricky Vigeland, a resident of Parow Val-ley, says the community is very glad thatthe fence has been restored. “We want touse this whole space to promote sport foryoungsters and now we have an enclosedspace.We have already started playing soc-cer and basketball andwant to get someonein to come and teach the children actioncricket. At themoment there are still a cou-ple of holes on the courts and as soon as thatis fixed, we will host a tournament as anofficial opening,” Vigeland says.

He says once the club house is fixed up,it will be able to serve as a community cen-tre again.

Dozens of City of Cape Town trafficcops merely got slapped on the wristsrecently for scores of speeding viola-

tions recorded in traffic vehicles duringNo-vember and December.

The speeding reports generated by thetraffic vehicle fleet’s tracking system weregenerated a few weeks ago.

These reports reflect some 40 traffic offic-ers from all over the city including thenorthern suburbs, excessively breaking thespeed limits on local roads.

Hundreds of violations are recordedwhere some officers drove at speeds doublethe allowed speed limit.

ExcessiveSpeeds in excess of 170 km/hwere record-

ed in 60 km/h speed zones, that of 170 km/hin 80 km/h speed zones and that of morethan 190 km/h in 120 km/h speed zones,many of which occurred in and around thenorthern suburbs and on the N1.

According to a TygerBurger source, in-formal hearings were held earlier this yearto investigate the violations.

“Although some of these officers couldprove that the speedingwas executed in act-ing in the course of their duties, themajori-ty could not account for the speeds theywere travelling,” this source said.

According to the source the times on thereports reflect that many of these officerswere on theirway to or fromworkwhen theviolations were recorded.

“Guilty members were issued with warn-ings,” he said.

Speeding can resulting in traffic fines ofup to R3 000, but a motorist caught driving196 km/h – like one officer did – is arrested

Richard Bosman, executive director forsafety and security for the city, respondedby saying that traffic officers must obey allrules of the road, unless they are acting inthe course of their duties.

“Failing to do so is unacceptable and suchbehaviour will not be tolerated,” he said ina statement to TygerBurger.

“..not driving in accordance with therules does portray a negative image. How-ever, while there are a handful of traffic of-ficers who have been found guilty of flout-ing the rules of the road, themajority of ourteam are law-abiding and continue to set asterling example for motorists.”

Bosman continued to say that the directo-rate will be reporting the matter to thecity’s civilian oversight committee at theirfirst meeting in February.

According to Bosman, the on board com-puter reports are issued regularly by thecorporate fleet for all city employees, notonly traffic officers.

Bronwyn Stassen (11) from Kraaifontein,the reigning Miss Pre-Teen Queen of theUniverse 2013, and her dad, Pierre Stassen,initiated the idea to host a Mr & Miss Tyger-fest at the inaugural Tygerfest 2014, run-ning from 21 to 22 February.

The Mr & Miss Tygerfest contest is justone of the events she will be hosting thisyear to assist with funding of the long listof charity projects she has already commit-ted to.

Another event she has planned for Valen-tine’s Day will treat every woman at the Ty-gerberg Hospital women’s wards with a redrose.

Bronwyn has started her own projectcalled “Can Do” where she aims to collect6 767 cans of tinned food for Mandela Day.

The Mr & Miss Tygerfest event will takeplace on Saturday 22 February and is opento boys and girls in the following catego-ries: ages 6 – 9, 10 – 12, 13 – 16 and 17 – 21.

MTBS ’n naelbytstrydRAYNO SNYMAN

In een van die spannendste MTBS-atle-tiekbyeenkomste die afgelope 20 jaar,kon die Hoërskool Stellenberg die druk

weerstaan en die Hoërskool D.F. Malan seaanslag afweer.Tydens die byeenkoms, geborg deur Die

Burger, het D.F. Malan uiteindelik tweedegeëindig in ’n titaniese stryd teen die Stel-lies wat tot op die einde in die weegskaalwas. Die Hoërskool Bellville het verrasdeur die derde plek in te neem, met dieHoërskool Tygerberg vierde.Die leerders en atlete het hul plekke reeds

vroeg begin inneem en teen 06:45 was daarnie meer plek vir ’n muis nie.Op die pawiljoen het ditwoes gegaan soos

die onderskeie skole met sang en ritmiesebewegings die beoordelaars probeer beïn-druk het.In die o.14-afdeling, waar DFM in beide

die seuns- en meisies-afdelings koning ge-kraai het, was daar talle blink vertonings.DFM se JP Luise (o.14-diskus, rekordgooi

van 45,99 m) het saammet Ruben en Ulrichvan Tonder die gooi-items oorheers. Anderpuik prestasies was: Meisies: Anuske Ens-lin (DFM, 800: 2:22.8 en 300H: 48,99), CamrynMearns (STB, 800: 2:23.07; 1500: 5:20.33 en400: 62.80) en Lené Duncan (HSB, VS: 5,07).Seuns: XavierAdams (HSB, VS: 5,51), Ste-

fanvanderMerwe (HSB, 1500: 4:58.70),DFMse 4 x 100-aflosspan (52.70 – rekord) en Jo-shua Dixon (DFM, HS: 1,60).Twee atlete spog met drie goue medaljes:

The 99er Cycle Tour and MTB Challengehad a record 4 676 entries on Saturday.The MTB events in particular saw a tre-

mendous growth in competitors. This wasthe 16th time that the 99er Cycle Tour hasbeen held.This year’s newMTBrouteswerewell en-

joyed and the 35 km route proved to be verychallenging. The 99 km race had a strongfield of competitors.Local cyclists from the Durbanville area

can be proud of Craig Boys, who won themen’s 99 kmevent. JennyStenerhag, top in-ternational cyclist from Sweden won thewomen’s event. Jenny has moved her wayup the winner’s podium from third place in2012, to second place in 2013 and now top po-sition in 2014.The ladies’ 35 km MTB race was won by

Matie student Mariska Straus, who is a topnational and international MTB competi-tor. The men’s 35 km MTB event was wonby Jurgens Uys, a top competitor in theSouth African Downhill MTB Champion-ships.There were some cyclists who sustained

injuries on the day, the more serious ofthese occurring on the R44 stretch of therace. Medical services en route were topclass with five medical points in total andfour roaming ambulances.The total value of performance prizeswas

R42 000, 45 % up from 2013. Lucky drawprizes, which totalled R100 000 in value, in-cluded two swimming pools. 4 000 goodiebags and medals.There were 190 enthusiastic participants

in the 5 kmFunWalk, introduced this year,and each walker received a medal and Ster-

rie Stumpie.Over 350 volunteers in the form of par-

ents, staff andpupils fromElShaddaiChris-tian School in Durbanville once again en-sured that this was a well organised andwell run event.
