Several so-called crowbar gangs havebeen active across the metropole, withthe most recent case taking place in

Welgelegen on 25 September.A redVolkswa-gen Golf 5 with tinted windows was spottedaround midday outside a house in KwartsStreet. Aburglaryhad takenplace but accor-ding to a Tygerburger reader, he believesthe gangs were at work because the frontdoor of the house had been forced open witha crowbar.He says he saw that the Golf had tinted

windows and four well-dressed males were

seen inside.“Be aware that they also use scouts on

foot,” he warned.According to W/O Jacques Mostert,

spokesperson for the Parow police, a policemember residing inAvondalewas also a vic-tim of a similar burglary last weekwhere aninstrument similar to a crowbar had beenused to gain access to the house.The getaway car was a white BMW with

yellow number plates.

Cases not linked, say policeMostert says the crowbar method is not

unique, nor confined to a specific area. Ho-wever, he has noticed some similarities in

the modus operandi.“Access is gained to the properties via

doors being forced open with various heavyitems including crowbars, hence the crow-bar gang tag. “According to police informati-on, the perpetrators are usually smartlydressed and move in the areas with types ofvehicles which would not appear suspiciousor look out of place. “Reports have been re-ceived where Audis, BMWs and other newmodels have been used.“Although property taken may vary, it

seems as if flatscreen TVs, jewellery, cell-phones, cash and laptop computers are theitems normally targeted.”Mostert says he would not refer to this

trend as organised crime.

‘Professional burglars’“These are not syndicates, rather professi-

onal burglars, because they knowwhat theywant,” he says.A similar incident was reported earlier in

September in Plattekloof Glen.A security company received an alarm ac-

tivation at 20:16 at a house in Tugela circle.The response officer arrived four minuteslater and saw that the front door had beenforced open. This time a safe had been bro-ken open and one firearm and some smallitems were stolen.

According to the security company, aneighbour’s CCTV footage showed a Merce-des Benz or a BMW leaving the premises.

Nobody was caught.Another incident occured on 25 Septem-

ber, this time in Monte Vista, where an ar-med response officer spotted a suspicious-looking black Audi around 15:00 on the cor-ner of Camoens road and Monte Vistaboulevard. He saw the car was occupied bytwo men. He called for backup and it was as-certained that the two men were convictedof house breaking but were out on bail. Thevehicle was searched and a number of toolswere found inside.

The security company claims that this isthe same black Audi that has been linked toburgaries over the last few weeks. The twosuspects were taken to the Goodwood policestation for further investigation, but accor-ding to the armed response report, were rele-ased later that day.

Although not many of the suspected crow-bar gang members have been arrested, foursuspects were caught redhanded trying tobreak into a house in Hambley Road, Lange-

berg Ridge two weeks ago (“Crowbar bur-glars caught in Langeberg Ridge”, www.ty-gerburger.co.za, 16 September).TygerBurger reported that Lieutenant Co-

lonel André Traut, provincial police spokes-man said the suspects used a crowbar to en-ter the premises.“While driving around inthe neighbourhood with a Mercedes Benzthat was stolen in Bothasig earlier this

month, the suspects were spotted by alert po-lice members who kept them under observa-tion. They were approached as they madetheir attempt to enter the premises, but fledthe scene upon the arrival of the police.

“After a brief pursuit, the suspects colli-ded with the stolen vehicle and were arre-sted,” Traut said.

According to the latest national crime sta-tistics, burglaries at residential premises inParow have doubled since five years ago.For the period from March 2013 to February2014 there were more than 1000 reported ca-ses. In Bellville this number has increasedfrom around 900 in 2009 to 1 200 in the 2014financial year.

“Members of the public are requested tobe vigilant regarding people moving aroundin their residential areas and to report any-thing out of the ordinary to the police, secu-rity companies, neighbours and neighbour-hood watches. Residents should also be awa-re of the fact that if they watch television atnight without closing the curtains, it makesit very easy for prospective burglars to seein.”

would like call on those planning toslaughter sheep or cattle to follow these gui-delines to ensure that the animals do not suf-fer unnecessarily.

According to the Animals Protection Act(No.71 of 1962):

V All animals must be confined in such amanner that allows them adequate space,ventilation, shelter, food and water;

V No animal should be picked up by itsfleece, dragged, chased or prodded;

V Animals should be restrained humanelywhile being transported and when being

slaughtered;V No animal should be tied by its legs with

bailing twine and crammed into the back ofcar boots or laid on their sides at the backof bakkies;

V When due to be slaughtered, animalsshould be laid on their sides and not on theirbacks to avoid distress. Animals should alsonot be forced to stand or kneel duringslaughter;

V Knives used for the slaughter must alsoremain extremely sharp so that theslaughtering remains as humane as possi-ble;

V Only experienced people should performthe slaughtering. Inexperienced, lay per-sons who attempt to perform the slaughtersoften cause horrific trauma and pain to the

animal.The CoGH SPCA advises those who are in-

experienced, but want to partake in Qurba-ni, to contact the CoGH SPCA Inspectorateon 021 700 4158/59 or after hours on 083 3261604 for referral to such establishments.

The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), theHalaal Trust and local farm owners have on-ce again collectively committed to ensurethe 2014 Eid-ul-adha is held not only in accor-dance with the Muslim religion and culture,but also in accordance with the law.

Die diefstal van allooiwiele (“wheelmags”) het nou kop uitgesteek in Oak-dale nadat dié misdryf eers in Boston

’n probleem was.In twee afsonderlike voorvalle vroegog-

gend op Erfenisdag is die allooiwiele vantwee motors in Leinsterstraat gesteel.

Volgens Ena Erasmus, ’n buurvrou in die-selfde straat, het haar seun, Casper, wat om-streeks 03:30 tuisgekom het, die diewe in ’nblou Hyundai Elantra met ’n CA-registra-sienommer sien wegjaag.

Hulle het sélf sowat ’n week gelede onderinbrekers deurgeloop. Die inbrekers hetselfs ’n tweede keer dieselfde nag terugge-keer – dié keer met ’n vuurwapen.

Kapt. Finnie Nimb, woordvoerder van dieBellville-polisie, het gesê die diefstal van al-looiwiele het in Boston afgeneem nadat ’nverdagte op 6 Augustus in hegtenis geneemis. Die bestuurder van die voertuig het egterweggekom.

Daar is toe in meer as ’n week vyf voorval-le aangemeld.

Erasmus se man, Dave, het aanTygerBur-ger vertel hoe daar verlede Donderdagog-gend eers by hul hek ingebreek is, en diediewe toe later met ’n vuurwapen terugge-keer het.

Volgens hom het die diewe ’n syhekkie seslot oopgebreek. Hulle het deur die oop on-derdakbraai na ’n oop swembadkroeg in dieagterplaas gegaan en onder meer ’n Dover-verwarmer en klankstelsel met drie luid-sprekers, asook al sy drank, gesteel.

Items is ook uit die onderdakbraai ge-

steel, soos ’n televisiestel, oefenfiets enveerpyltjiebord. Die diewe het ook kos uitdie yskas en vrieskas gesteel.

Die diewe was ook in die kombuis, sê hy,want ’n ysmaker word vermis. Die kom-buisdeur het oopgestaan vir hul honde.

Volgens Dave het hulle dwarsdeur allesgeslaap en hul ses honde het nie eens wak-ker geword nie.

Hy het omstreeks 02:15 wakker gewordtoe die diewe die kragdrade in die swembad-kroeg geknip het, wat ’n kragonderbrekingveroorsaak het.

Volgens hom hou hul saans die televisieaan, en het hy wakker geword toe dit af-gaan.

Hy het buite gaan kyk of ander se kragin die straat ook af is. Hy het verder onder-soek ingestel en toe besef dat ingebreek is.

Die polisie is ontbied en hy het ’n verkla-ring afgelê.

Hy was daarna omstreeks 04:00 nog besigom die afgeknipte drade in die swembad-

kroeg op te ruim toe hy iemand vinnig bydie syhekkie sien uitgaan.

StiefseunHy het gedink dis sy stiefseun en toe hy

naderstap om die hekkie toe te maak, hettwee mans uit hul kombuis gekom. Een hethul vegbulterriërhondjie van sewe maandein die een hand gehou en het ’n vuurwapenin sy ander hand gehad. Hulle het agteruitgeloop deur die syhekkie om weg te kom.

“My stiefseun het intussen toevallig bydie voordeur uitgegaan en hulle ‘vasge-keer’. Hulle het die vuurwapen op hom ge-rig en een het gesê ‘kill him’. “Hy het toegeskree ons moet ingaan en dat die man ’nvuurwapen het, en toe in die huis ingehard-loop,” vertel hy. Die diewe het uitgehard-loop en in ’n donkerkleurige, moontlik ’nVW Citigolf, gespring en weggejaag.

Nimb het bevestig klagte van huisbraaken die rig van ’n vuurwapen word onder-soek.

Dié VW Golf is net so gelaat nadat al vier allooiwiele afgesteel is.

The Voortrekker Road Corridor Impro-vement District (VRCID) were given acar and a motorcycle to better carry out

their work by two businesses in Bellville.Transland Motors and Williams Hunt Motorssponsored the vehicles.

’n Groep van vyf vroue en twee mans wat opFacebook bevriend geraak het, het ’n paarjaar gelede die Rhino Memorial Club gestig.

Vanaf 2011 het hulle kruise in Bosmans-damweg buite die natuurreservaat in Botha-sig geplant vir elke renoster wat in Suid-Afrika vir sy horing geslag is.

“In 2013 het die getal al by 640 gedraai, toedie mense begin kla dat dit soos ’n begraaf-plaas op die breë padrand begin lyk,” vertelMara Louw van Atlantis.

“Ons het toe ’n skenking gekry vir ’n ad-vertensiebord en het uit ons eie sakke ’ndraadrenoster laat maak,” vertel Louw.

Sy sê dit het lank geneem, omdat hulle ge-

sukkel het om die regte persoon te kry omdie draadrenoster te maak.

week die draadrenosterkalf buite die Platte-kloof Village-winkelsentrum gaan instal-leer.

“Ons droom is om ’n soortgelyke bewus-makingsveldtog by elke winkelsentrum tebegin,” sê sy.

Ajax Cape Town will be calling CapeTown Stadium home for the next threeseasons.

Last Thursday, the City council ap-proved an agreement with the UrbanWarriors.

Mayoral committee member for Tour-ism, Events and Economic Develop-ment, Garreth Bloor says:

“We are pleased to have reached anamicable agreement with Ajax CT. Theteam has a huge following of soccer en-thusiasts and we are excited that theiconic stadium will be their homeground for the next three seasons. Thisis part of our commitment to building aninclusive city by supporting sport thathave big fan bases in our communities.”

As part of the agreement, the City of

Cape Town will carry the stadium’s di-rect cost and specific service costs for thegames.

The income accrued through ticketsales will be paid to the City until the es-timated R3-million direct costs havebeen recouped. The expected sale of57 000 tickets will adequately cover theevent costs.

According to an official statement:“Should there be a shortfall, Ajax willcontribute an amount up to R270 000 to-wards the shortfall.

The historical data of the last threeseasons’ ticket sales reveal that this is in-deed a viable model. Ajax CT and theCity will share income generatedthrough sponsorships or incomestreams identified by the club.”
