Public order police were called in to JoeSlovo Park yesterday after rioting taxidrivers blocked Koeberg Road.

TygerBurger arrived on the scene shortlyafter 08:00 and found taxi drivers congregat-ing along Freedom Way with police nearby.

A taxi driver who only identified himselfas Thabo said they were upset about a newMyCiTi route.

The Phoenix MyCiTi station on Omuram-ba Road was burnt and closed.

According to City of Cape Town Maycomember for transport, Brett Herron, the sta-tion was attacked around 02:00 on Tuesdaymorning.

“It appears that burning tyres were placedin front of the station entrance and caused

damage to the station roller shutter doorsand the front entrance. The last bus alongthis route (T04) stopped at the Phoenix sta-tion at 22:20 on Monday night and no staffor commuters were present at the time of theattack.”

At the time of going to print, it was unclearwho was responsible.

Police spokesperson Warrant OfficerDaphne O’Reilly says at about 06:00 on Tues-day morning taxi drivers blocked off Koe-berg Road. She said no injuries were report-ed.

Shortly before 09:00 the group walked upFreedom Way and police, Law Enforcementand Metro Police officers could be seen pre-paring to follow them. Residents were in-structed to go into their homes while policepursued the group. A short while later twotaxis could be seen speeding down Freedom

Way into Kiwu Road and then disappearing.The taxis were loaded with men. A third taxicame shortly afterwards, but as the driverstruggled to locate the other two taxis, resi-dents directed him towards Kiwu Road.

Herron condemned the attack and saysthey are still trying to establish a motive forthe strike.

“We have a number of forums where weregularly engage with the minibus taxi in-dustry and we expect the industry to makeuse of these forums to engage with us aboutany challenges, concerns, or complaints.”

He says anarchy, violence and the destruc-tion of City property are unacceptable.

“The only long-term solution is for us allto have regular engagements and a commit-ment from the industry to resolve any disa-greements in a peaceful manner.”

Herron further says there are regular and

continual engagements with the minibustaxi industry in all areas where imminentroll-outs of new routes will happen.

“Furthermore, the City has, in our en-deavour to establish regular and construct-ive engagement with our partners in thepublic transport realm, established the LandTransport Advisory Board (LTAB) in Sep-tember 2014.

“The LTAB is a panel, established in ac-cordance with the National Land TransportAct, to advise the City’s council on landtransport matters such as the relationshipbetween road and rail transport; the alloca-tion of funding for road construction and re-habilitation across the city and adjacent mu-nicipalities; public transport law enforce-ment; the relationship between develop-ment and transport infrastructure and themanagement of freight.”

A local church will have to go back tothe drawing board after their propos-al for a school in Joe Slovo Park was

slammed by residents last week.A public meeting was called where the

Seventh-day Adventist Church tabled theirconceptual plans. Opening the meeting,ward councillor Joy McCarthy said a plotof land owned by theCity of CapeTownmaybecome vacant soon. The property situatedin Khozi Street is currently occupied bytemporary classrooms for learners of Sinen-jongo High School while their school is un-der construction.McCarthy explained during discussions

residents expressed the need for a multi-purpose centre which among other facili-ties would include a library. She explainedwhen Sinenjongo was complete, local com-munity leaders agreed the City would com-mencewith the new centre aimed at provid-ing recreational facilities for the youth.McCarthy said the proposal for a school

has since arisen and that was the purposeof the meeting.Representing the church were pastors

Daniel Potgieter and Owen Mlotshwa.In his briefing, Potgieter explained in dis-

cussions with local organisations they dis-

cussed three main issues. Firstly, the pro-posed school would not be a project. He saidthey viewed it as a long term commitmentand in addition they believe it would be bestto have a school where parents will not berequired to pay school fees. Potgieter saidthey also identified the need to establishwhat the language policy would be as theschool would service both Joe Slovo andPhoenix.

Joe Slovo parents said while they agreedan additional school was needed they wereupset that they were not part of initial dis-cussions. Mlotshwa explained while thechurch was able to source funding theywere required to communicate with thecommunity first. He said a surveywas donebut acknowledged that not all residentswere consulted. He also said they had metwith various community organisationswho agreed a school was a good idea.

Residents, however, remained unde-terred and continued to voice their frustra-tions, pointing fingers at the organisationsfor not informing them.

Parents from Phoenix also attended andexplained with only one primary school inthe area many of their children attendedschools in other communities.

This, they said, was due to the school notcatering for Afrikaans and English speak-ing learners.

As themeeting continued, residents start-ed to walk out and the meeting was calledto an end.Speaking after themeeting, Mlotshwa ex-

plained the church has a local congregationcalled Inkosiyeza.“As we planned our ministry to the com-

munity, we did a community survey andasked them about their most pressingneeds. The needs of a school, a clinic anda library came out on top of the list.”Mlotshwa said in addition they also oper-

ated schools in other areas.“We started discussions with the known

leaders in the community. The more wetalked the more we discovered that every-body claims to speak on behalf of the com-munity. Because we understood the Sinen-jongo High School would be moved in Junetonewpremises,wewanted to start a schoolin the existing structures, and then to devel-op and fund the project in phases throughthe structures of the Seventh-day AdventistChurch.”He said while providing a school in the

area was very important to them, they didnot want to force their services onto thecommunity.“Therefore we are considering our op-

tions as we pursue this goal of providingschooling for the children of Joe Slovo Parkand Phoenix.”

Tygerhof residents are reeling in shockafter brazen thieves allegedly stormed thehome of two elderly women and attackedone of them during a house robbery.

News of the incident quickly spreadacross the quiet suburb on Friday. Ac-cording to reports, awheelie binwas usedand robbers cut the “spikes” on top of aboundary wall.

Residents say the men were armed andentered the home during the early hours

on Friday and allegedly assaulted one ofthe women with the “spikes” before steal-ing various valuables.

Milnerton police confirmed the inci-dent but said one of the women was in-jured with the spikes as she tried to pullone of the suspects from the wall while hetried to escape.

Police spokesperson Warrant OfficerDaphne O’Reilly said electrical equip-ment was taken, which included a televi-sion and a laptop. In addition robbersmade off with jewellery, car keys and awallet.

“The suspects fled the scene in an oldbox shaped Toyota Corolla.”According to a message shared by resi-

dents, the women’s dog was drugged butO’Reilly said while the dog is alive, shecannot confirm whether or not it wasdrugged as no tests were done.She said there were three robbers and

one of the men had a firearm.At this stage no suspects have been

Reports about a balaclava gang operat-ing in Milnerton are false.According to the rumours spread in

Tygerhof, three armed men wearing bala-clavas allegedly stormresidents’ homesandtie up occupants while they steal valuables.Residents claimed they knew of two cases

which took place in Glanville and Pringleroads. In both these cases, they said the oc-cupants were tied up and the suspects worebalaclavas.However, according to Milnerton police

this is not the case. Police spokespersonWarrant Officer Daphne O’Reilly says onMonday 7 March shortly after midnight ahouse robbery was reported where a televi-sion and awallet were taken. She says therewere three men, none of whom wore bala-clavas, who stabbed a male resident as he

tried to fight them off. “There is no informa-tion available on how the suspects fled thescene.”In the second incident which took place

on Tuesday 8 March at 06:00 a house break-inwas reported. She says various valuableswere stolen but it is unclear howmany sus-pects were involved.“In this incident the complainant was

sleeping and only realised there was ahouse break-in when he woke up and foundthe items missing and sliding door forcedopen. No information is available on howthe suspect(s) fled the scene.”Meanwhile, Table View police have con-

firmed two incidents in the last week ofhouse robberieswhere the suspectswere al-legedly wearing balaclavas.The first incident took place on Friday 4

March during the early hours. Policespokesperson Lieutenant Adriana Chan-dler says the complainantwas sitting smok-

ing in the garden at his home in Gie Roadwhen he was approached by three menwearing balaclavas. Two of them werearmed with pangas and a crowbar.“The suspects took the complainant in-

side the house to his bedroom, where theybound his hands and feet. The suspects tookproperty of the complainant, including aflat screen television and then fled.”Chandler says two days later a woman in

the same street reported that she and herfriend were asleep when she was woken upby the kitchen light being switched on atabout 01:15. “She noticed three men wear-ing balaclavas who told the complainantand a friend to keep quiet. One of the menwas armed with a firearm. The suspectpointed the firearm at the friend and anoth-er tied the friend’s hands with shoelaces.Chandler explains the suspects gained en-

try by forcing the back door open. No ar-rests have been made.

Beggars: stop giving them money

Residents have been urged to avoid givingmoney to women seen begging at intersec-tions in Table View.

In recent months, residents have raisedthe alarm about children seen sitting on themedians of busy intersections across TableView while the women, believed to be theirmothers, beg for money.

The issuewas ahot topic at theTableViewRatepayers’ Association (TVRA) meetinglast week. In January, the association wroteto the City of Cape Town’s Mayco memberfor social development seeking help.

While several cases have been raised,most alarming is the intersection of Linkand West Coast roads where a child is regu-larly seen with a woman. In many cases, thechild is left on the median between generaltraffic and MyCiTi buses.TygerBurger has seen two different wom-

en begging at this spot, one with a baby andone with a toddler.

TVRA chairperson Leon Alhadeff ex-plains in addition to the safety concernsabout children so close to traffic, the associa-tion was concerned about the effects of chil-dren who spend long hours in the sun.

“If you look at where they are, we fear thatonedayachildwillmoveandabuswill comealong. In addition we are worried aboutwhether or not these children are beinglooked after properly.”

Speaking during the meeting, residentsrevealed the City’s social development de-partment have tried to assist these womenbut were turned away.

According to Mayco member for social de-velopment and early childhood develop-ment, Suzette Little, there have been severalcomplaints about the women. Asked specifi-cally about the woman seen with a baby, Lit-tle says officials from her department and

Law Enforcement have visited the locationand tried to engage with her, however shehas refused all offers of assistance to date.

In addition, the Mayco member for safetyand security, JPSmith, says theyhavedeter-mined the woman is not homeless, but resid-es in Macassar and commutes to Table Viewon a daily basis.

On various occasions, TygerBurger haswitnessed the woman leave the baby on themedian and walk between the traffic and onone occasion a MyCiTi bus passed the baby.

The Mayco member for transport, BrettHerron, says the companyoperating thebus-

es on thisMyCiTi route hasnot reported thisto the transport department.

Smith says Law Enforcement is unable totake action against the woman in terms ofthe by-law relating to Streets, Public Placesand the Prevention of Noise Nuisances asshe does not engage in aggressive begging.“She simply sits on the pavement relying onsympathetic passers-by to hand over moneyand/or goods.”

Little explains while officials have tried toassist, the services are offered and cannot beforced on anyone.

“Weare concernedabout thewelfareof the

woman’s child – however, the Western CapeDepartment of Social Development is re-sponsible for the welfare of children interms of the Children’s Act. The City refersall cases to the provincial department; wehave done the same in this instance.”

Speaking at the meeting, residents madea clarion call for people to stop giving moneyto people seen begging at robots. They be-lieve as long as money is given, women willcontinue to stand in the traffic putting chil-dren at risk.V What are your thoughts? Send your letter [email protected].

An R11.7 million project to make the N7highway safer is underway. In recentweeks workmen have been seen

along the stretch of road near Dunoon dig-ging trenches along the median.

According to Heinrich Robertson,spokesperson for the provincial transportand public works department, the purposeof these works is to install new street lightson the N7 between the Bosmansdam andPotsdam interchanges to make this roadsafer.

Once this project is complete, the West-ern Cape Government will have installedstreet lights along three critical roads,namely the N1, N2 and N7 up to the pointwhere the South African National RoadsAgency (Sanral) is responsible.

The new lights are being installed alongthe median, which includes the laying ofnew cable and four new electrical connec-tions. Work commenced in November lastyear and is expected to be completed byMay.

Speaking during a Table View Ratepay-ers’ Association (TVRA) meeting last week,a Parklands residents raised concernsabout people crossing the road between Du-noon and Richwood. Each morning peoplecan be seen running across the busy high-way as motorists try to prevent a collision.

During winter last year, many raised thealarm about people crossing the dark roadand the transport department confirmedseveral fatalities.

Asked whether any of the roadworkswould address this issue, Robertson saidplans are underway to address this issue inclose liaison with the local community, the

department and the City of Cape Town.The department is also completing road-

works along the M19 which connects the N7highway with West Coast Road (R27).

Robertson explained regular mainte-nance and repair works are necessary tokeep provincial roads in a good condition.Work along the M19 is part of a broaderproject that includes a section of the R27from the M19 northwards to just beyond Sil-werstroom Road.

“The existing road surface is being re-paired and resealed to protect the underly-ing pavement layers. This will prolong thelife of the road. The contract also includesthe upgrading of certain intersections.”

The M19/R27 intersection is being up-graded by lengthening the right-only turn-ing lane onto the R27 northbound from theM19, as well as introducing a left-only turn-ing lane from the R27 southbound onto theM19 eastbound. The M19/ R304 intersectionis being upgraded by introducing right-on-ly turning lanes for traffic to safely turn offthe M19 eastbound while the R27/ Duyne-fontein intersection is being upgraded byintroducing a right-only turning lane forvehicles turning off the R27 southbound.

“Structural repairs are being done on theroad over the rail bridge on the M19, andon the bridge over the Sout River on theR27.”

Work commenced in May last year andis expected to be completed by mid-June.However, most of the work along the M19has already been completed and is expectedto be completed by April.

The resealing operation is done in sec-tions in order to minimise delays. Two-waytraffic flow will be maintained at all times.Lane closures will be kept to an absoluteminimum in order to avoid delays.

Last D-Day pilot receives prestigious medalBrigadier General Albie Götze (93), the lastsurviving pilot in South Africa to havebeen involved in the D-Day landings, re-ceived the General Service Medal 1918 atthe Mess Air Force Base in Ysterplaat yes-terday.According to a statement by the South

African Air Force Association (SAAFA),the presentation was made by Wing Com-manderNigelCookson, deputymilitaryad-visor to the British High Commissioner.Götze joined the SA Air Force in June

1942 andwas selected for fighter pilot train-ing.He qualified for wings in 1943. After

training, he was sent to the Middle East,Egypt and Palestine, then on to Englandwith 127 Spitfire Squadron RAF.He flew patrols and bomber escorts into

Europe. He was involved in shooting downV-1 flying bombs, and provided flying cov-er for D Day landings.From 1944, Götze flew Hawker Typhoon

which was extremely dangerous and athigh risk.He made several crash landings after

Record turnout at sports festivalStand-up paddlers battle it out in the 10km National Stand Up Paddling Race which formed partof the three day Century City Sports Festival.

The 2016 Century City Sports Festivalheld over the weekend attracted arecord number of participants with

justunder 2500 runners competing in the sig-nature event – the 10km Century City Ex-press – and a further 700 participating in the2.5km Family Fun Run/Walk.The three-day festival, which includes

both participatory and spectator sports, isthe highlight on the Century City sports cal-endar and this is the seventh consecutiveyear it has been held.

Anew plan for the Local Networkof Care (LNOC) in Ward 55 hasbeen set in motion and in less

than a month an election will takeplace.

The committee met with City ofCape Town officials and organisa-tions in Brooklyn over the weekendto discuss the way forward.

The meeting got off to a bumpystart when a representative from a lo-cal organisation questioned the man-date of the LNOC. WhenTygerBurgerarrived, shouting could be heardfrom the meeting room at the library.The argument stemmed from a repre-sentative from the previous LocalAdvisory Committee who ques-tioned LNOC coordinator MaureenJangle about the current commit-tee’s election.

Fell apartDuring discussions it was revealed

that the advisory committee was es-tablished several years ago but fellapart due to a lack of support fromgovernment. Jangle and City offi-cials explained they had no knowl-edge of this committee and explainedthe LNOC is constituted under themunicipality’s street people pro-gramme and works with social servi-ces networks across various wards.

The network is an initiative by the

City’s social development depart-ment and is aimed at forming a bodyof local organisations in a specificward to holistically address social is-sues such as homelessness and chil-dren at risk, among others.

Plans for the Ward 55 LNOC start-ed mid last year when the City placedadvertisements calling on all organi-sations to a meeting. Representativesfrom various organisations met inJune for a briefing on what the LNOCentailed. Due to a lack of organisa-tions present, City officials called forthe election to be postponed until thenext meeting. A month later a com-mittee was formed but not all postswere filled. In addition, the secretaryresigned due to other commitments.

In January this year the committeeexpressed their dismay at the lack ofsupport from the City and the chal-lenges they faced. They wrote a letterto the Mayco member for social de-velopment, Suzette Little, explainingtheir concerns and plans to disband.At the time, Little said they wereaware of the challenges, training hadbeen planned and the municipalitywould prefer that the LNOC not dis-band.

During the meeting, City officialSherry-Lee La Mohr said she man-aged and provided support for 24LNOCs across Cape Town. She in-formed those present that she had noknowledge of a prior committee andwas present to assist Ward 55. She ex-

plained across the City, the social de-velopment department was facedwith various challenges and saidtheir focus was to assist with reinte-grating homeless people into societyand prevent migration to the streets.She explained among some of the cur-rent requirements for the Ward 55LNOC were to first elect a full com-mittee, draft a year plan and identifyprojects and training needed.

La Mohr questioned what projectshad been identified thus far.

“I went to the soup kitchens withthe forms but the problem is when weget to Home Affairs we need R140 perperson. Without an ID they can’t gethelp or a social grant. We are alsolooking for a list of elderly peoplewho need food but struggle to get tosoup kitchens. We have arrangedwith Meals on Wheels and have got-ten individuals to sponsor people,but we need names of those in need.”

A proposal from the floor alsocalled for the LNOC to look into theamount of children who have notbeen enrolled into a school.

The next meeting will be held onSaturday 2 April at Brooklyn libraryhall at 09:30.

A young singer from Table View wowed the audienceat the Milnerton Cluster Got Talent competition.

The competition sees residents living in the Mil-nerton police cluster which includes Milnerton, Ta-ble View and Melkbosstrand police stations competein various categories.

Cingani Maqolo (13) was the finalist for Table Viewand wowed the crowd with her performance whenshe sang “Alone at a crossroad”. Cingani was one oftwo solo artists who performed.

Lieutenant Adriana Chandler from Table View po-lice and Cingani’s mother, Kuhle, accompanied herto the talent show. “We are very proud of Cingani’sperformance. She is so talented and exudes confi-dence,” Chandler says.

Water will become more expensive inthe future, as more expensiveschemeswill be needed to supply ad-

ditional water to Cape Town.This was said by Paul Rhode of bulkwater

planning of the City of Cape Town at a dis-cussion of water supply, which was recentlyhosted by the Durbanville Community Fo-rum andWard 21 of Subcouncil 7 (Koeberg).The discussion was presented by Rhode

and Pierre Maritz, manager of water reticu-lation of the City.“Everyone is now very concerned about

water supply, with restrictions having beenimplemented. People suddenly realised theycan run out of water,” Rhode said.The City of Cape Town gets its water from

the dams around Cape Town. These damsare the Voëlvlei, Berg River and Theewa-terskloof dams, as well as Wemmershoek,Steenbras Upper and Steenbras Lowerdams, he explained.“With the low rainfall over the past win-

ter, we have less water to use. Thus, waterrestrictions were implemented to ensurethat we will have sufficient water over thecoming two to three summers,” Rhode said.“Since the year 2000, we realised we need-

ed to manage water demand, which we’vedone in a number of ways. We have encour-aged water conservation by, for example,recommending water wise gardening, in-stalling water saving shower heads and du-al-flushing toilets.“We have also instituted pressure man-

agement to reduce the pressure on pipelines

to reduce leaks.“We also focused on pipeline replacement

to prevent bursts and education at schoolson how to conserve water,” he continued.“As a result of these efforts, in the last 10

years the per capita water use by Capetoni-ans has decreased.“Weknowwecurrentlyhaveadrought sit-

uation. The rainfall during 2015 wasamongst the lowest in the 100 year rainfallrecord at the Steenbras dam and was alsolow at Wemmershoek dam,” Rhode said.“TheVoëlvlei damwas only 50% full at the

end of the winter last year. In response, theCity minimised use from the Voëlvlei damafterwinter. Ifwe did not do this, some areasin the surrounding Swartland area could berunning out ofwater beforewinter,” he said.“Restrictions are our planned way to deal

with short term shortages caused bydroughts. Elsewhere, new infrastructurehas sometimes been built in response todroughts – admittedly out of necessity, butonce weather patterns return to normal, theadditional infrastructure is not needed orused,” he said.According to Rhode it already looks like

residents are responding to water restric-tions and that the City is using less water.“Currently thewaterdemand is about 10%

lower than the same time last year.“Regarding the way forward, we will need

to build new water supply schemes and in-frastructure when the capacity of the cur-rent system is fully utilised. There are longlead times needed for planning and con-struction of new water supply infrastruc-ture. We are looking 25 to 30 years aheadwith our planning for water infrastructure

supply, tomake surewe can build new infra-structure in time,” he warned.“The national Department of Water and

Sanitation is proceedingwith the first phaseof augmenting the Voëlvlei dam. The City iscurrently conducting feasibility studies onthree other water supply options and willuse the results ofthese studies to de-cide what future wa-ter supply infrastruc-ture will be built,”Rhode said.“The City is grow-

ing rapidly inanorth-erly direction andthat is where we willneed additional wa-ter to supply thegrowing areas inKraaifontein andDurbanville.“In the next six to eight years we will be

constructing the new bulk water augmenta-tion scheme, which will supply water fromthe Theewaterskloof andBergRiver dams tothe City. This bulk water augmentationschemewill comprise anewwater treatmentplant, bulk reservoirs andpipelines. Thewa-ter treatment plant and a reservoir will bebuilt in thevicinity ofMuldersvlei,while an-other bulk reservoir will be built north ofDurbanville,” he said.Pipelines will be built between the Berg

River dam and the new water treatmentplant, and from thewater treatment plant in-to the bulk water distribution system sup-plying water into the City. The total cost ofthe scheme will be R1,7 billion.

“Regarding climate change, we are not yetseeing a significant change in long termrainfall patterns in the catchment areas ofour dams, and it is difficult to say if the cur-rent drought is linked to climate change.This is somethingwe arewatching carefullyin our long term planning.

“Another pos-sibility in future,with growingwater demand, isthe increasingcompetition be-tween urban us-ers and agricul-tural use and dif-ferent urbancentres for wa-ter. This willhave to be care-fully managed toensure both eco-

nomic growth and food security.“In Cape Town we will face growing de-

mand into the future and will have to buildmore expensive resources, which will alsocontribute to water being more expensive.“Currently we pay more for electricity

than water, but that will change in future.The City will not be able to provide watercheaply anymore.“Desalination, in which reversed osmosis

is used to purify sea water, for instance, isvery expensive,” Rhode said.“A lot of our existing infrastructure is also

getting old. Some parts of our system aremore than 100 years old. Refurbishment andmaintenance will drive the price of waterupwards,” Rhode said.

Feral cats across the northern suburbsgot a new lease on life over the weekendthanks to a partnership between volun-teer vets, veterinary nurses and Capeto-nians Against Animal Abuse (CAAA).Over the weekend, volunteers gath-

ered at the Table View Animal Hospitalalong West Coast Road to sterilise 40 fe-ral cats.Speaking to TygerBurger ahead of the

event, Leandi Best, a veterinary nurse atthe hospital, explains CAAA consists ofa group of concerned cat lovers acrossthenorthern suburbs and look after feralcats.“These cats are wild and basically

have either been abandoned or wereborn wild and never domesticated. Theycan be found on farms, industrial areasand campuses andCAAAassists by trap-ping these cats and they are gatheredand then sterilised.“They collect cats in various areas

across the northern suburbs and arran-ges for them to be sterilised at theGoede-moed Animal Hospital in Durbanville.”This, Leandi explains, is a strenuous

process as volunteers start planning sev-eral weeks before the sterilisation and

about a week before it commences thecats are gathered. Using food, they arelured into metal traps in areas wherebreeding is a concern and taken for steri-lisation.Leandi has volunteered her services at

the Durbanville vet and this time sheopted to raise funds for a sterilisation inTable View. With the use of raffles shegathered R4 000 to sterilise 40 cats andexplains it costs a bit more for femalecats.“This only covers the equipment and

testing; all the services of the vets andnurses are voluntary on the day. Whenwe start, they are tested for the feline im-munodeficiency virus (FIV) and felineleukemia virus (FeLV) and if negativethey are sterilised, vaccinated and de-fleaed.”The cats then receive a clip on the ear

to indicate they have been sterilised be-fore being released again. “There is nopoint in trying to have these cats domes-ticated. They are wild and look afterthemselves but the breeding is a prob-lem.”After Saturday’s event, Leandi says

Shaun Berry has beena part of the local music scene formany years. After playing withacts like Bleach, Broken Radio andThe Sin, he started a solo project:The Signal Rose.

The act has since evolved into aband which fans will get to see inaction for the first time this week-end when the trio play at the V&AWaterfront Amphitheatre.

All these previous acts have beena training camp for the vocalistand guitarist.

“The last 10 years of my life havebeen about trying to figure out howto write, perform and use whatevertalents I have to the best of my abil-ity.”

He’s had a working relationshipwith drummer Niel Walters forabout as long, and the two haveplayed in many bands together.

He met bassist JP Greef long be-fore he met Neil though, when heauditioned for his band Head Pieceas a youngster.

“I thought he was cool becausehe gave me a beer,” Shaun jokes.He didn’t get the “gig” and endedup playing for an act called Bleachbefore starting to work with Neil.

Solo albumsSomewhere in-between he took a

gap to work on solo music, releas-ing three albums on his own, butwas never really satisfied.

“It was never complete.”His ideas of what he wanted to do

were always much bigger than thesolo music he was making. Shaunhas always been “into” alternativerock, saying “it offers the broadestspectrum of what you can do”.

He was sitting in traffic one daywhen the name for his new project,The Signal Rose, popped into hishead. The first three The SignalRose albums were written in muchthe same way. He would get an idea

while driving and just “go with it”.When he reconnected with Neil,

Shaun decided to get a band togeth-er and five months down the line,they are preparing for their firstshow together.

“We’ve got the right songs andthe right people.”

JP explains that they’ve beenhard at work reworking a fewtracks from the first three The Sig-

nal Rose albums. “We’ve been us-ing those as a ball park to see howwe feel musically. We’ve changedup some of the dymanics and tech-nicalities of the tracks,” he says,adding they’ve also been workingon new material as a band.

Shaun says they are spoilt forchoice when it comes to choosingsongs for their show. The idea is toincorporate the reworked songswith the newer ones written for theband’s upcoming album. They alsohope to re-record the older tracksto fit all three musicians.

Fresh, new, energetic soundTheir main focus for the last few

weeks however has been puttingtogether their set for the Water-front. Neil says from there they’llstart working on shorter sets for fu-ture shows.

The three agree that the audi-ence can look forward to a soundthat’s fresh, new, and energeticand “nothing vaguely similar” toany other music.

Neil calls it “organic alternativerock” while Shaun says it’s “me-lodic rock”, but adds that theypush boundaries by playing withsong structures.

est in nine years, says general manager Bri-an Usher.Property World are not only the official

on-site agents for new residential develop-ments launched by Rabie Property Group,the developers of Century City, but they alsooperate extensively in the precinct’s second-hand housingmarket where they hold an es-timated market share of more than 50%.Usher said in January this year they had

close on World Smile Day in October andthe aim of Operation Smile is to doublethe amount of money raised last year.The public can help by collecting plas-

tic bottle caps from Fair Cape Dairiesproducts as well as any other plastic bot-tle caps and dropping it off at selected li-

braries.Each operation costs R5 500 and every

Having cleared the gunge fromtheir exhausts after the open-ing meeting of the Power Se-

ries at Killarney lastmonth, compet-itors are now preparing to shoot thelights out during the second roundon Saturday. The series is sponsoredby Wingfield Motors.Adding to the excitement will be

the appearance of two top Britishdrivers in the V8 Masters events.Stephen Young, who is based in Lon-don, has become a regular in theseparts and it came as no real surprisewhen he won one of the races duringthe first round. However Pat Gorm-ley has not been to the Cape beforeand may need time to get used to thetrack.One certainty is that neither of

them can expect any mercy from lo-cal hotshots like champion RichardSchreuder, Craig Jarvis, FrancoDonadio and Charles Arton.Then, although it didn’t win, Dave

Rowley’s historic VW Beetle cap-tured the hearts of the spectators inthe Fine Car events, a category nowsponsored byKent Homes. Giving asgood as he got, Rowley eventuallysettled for second not far behind Ge-off Bihl’s extremely quick Porsche944 S.Two others who endeared them-

selves to the crowd that day, were 15

year old Formula Mygale driverJoshua Dolinschek and Dee–JayBooysen in his home built Ferrari(sort of) lookalike in the single seaterFormula Libre category. But whileDolinschek, who is the youngestmain circuit driver in the WesternCape, snatched an overall victory,Booy-sen was only able to completeone race and finished well down onthepoints tally. It is going to be inter-esting to see him in action during a(hopefully) trouble free round.Nick Adcock was one of the most

prominent drivers who missed thefirst round of the Makita FormulaSupercar events in order to competein the Africa 6-hour endurance raceat Phakisa in the Free State. Hisstay-away was certainly justifiedwhenhe (andhis co-drivers)went onto win the gruelling event in finestyle.Moving on to the Crossley and

Webb Sports & GT events, if Adcockis at the wheel of the French Ligierthathedrove in the 6-Hour,his battlewith former titleholder Francis Car-ruthers (Juno SS3) and Dawie Jou-bert in his Lotus Exige, could be an-other one of the meeting’s high-lights.With 18 races on the programme

and a plethora of new kiddie andfamily attractions at Killarney,there should be something for every-body at the complex on Saturday.

Bianca earns rosette: BiancaAdams, a Grade 12 learner atMilnerton High School, competedat the recent Equestrian GradedDressage show at the ConstantiaValley Riding Club and camesecond in the Novice Dressagetest 4. She also attended showjumping at the Europa Equestriancentre and received a rosette forher clear round on the 80cm.She will compete in a multidisci-plinary show in George from 19to 23 March.
