Resident Sheik Noorani Toorabally, who lives closest to the spill, says a manhole lo- cated along the open space can often be seen lifting as raw sewage spills onto the grass. He says City of Cape Town officials have been on the site to find a solution during the past week. “The problem starts at the pump station. Every time something happens there you see the water come out of the manhole. It makes everything stink and the sewage forms a pond of stinky water,” he says. Toorabally explains that each time there is a spill he reports it to the officials at the pump station, but says it’s important for offi- cials to find a permanent solution. “We are worried about many things. First- ly there are health risks. People walk here with their children and dogs and this water just stands here and stinks up the place. We are worried about whether or not the spill will affect the sewer lines to our homes and we don’t want this stuff pushing up in our bathrooms,” he says. Residents say they monitor the manhole frequently and when a bad smell is detected in Brooklyn, that is the likely cause. According to City mayco member for utili- ty services, Ernest Sonnenberg, the gravity line leading to the pump station overflowed and this led to the effluent being discharged through the manhole. He confirmed the spillage was untreated sewerage and explained it is a combination of effluent water from showers, baths, toilets and dishwashers among other things. Asked whether problems at the pump sta- tion were linked to load shedding, Sonnen- berg said there was a local power outage over the weekend but supply has since been restored to normal functioning order. “The pump station is regularly monitored and maintained. Unfortunately there are times when infrastructure experiences a fault, but the City works to ensure that the impact of these instances is kept to a minimum.” Sonnenberg further said the site is being cleaned and reminded all residents to please report any problems to the call centre as soon as possible so they can be addressed. According to Toorabally, this is not the first time there has been a spillage and he believes officials need to create a bypass to the river canal to prevent sewage pooling near their homes. An application to lease a portion of pub-lic open space in Sanddrift for a cellu-lar base station has been put on hold.

This follows a decision at Subcouncil 15’smonthly meeting held last week.According to the report tabled at themeet-

ing, the application by Cell C and Vodacom, was initiated in October last year. The cell-phone companies applied to lease a portionof vacant land for five years as the site fora new base station in Pringle Road. The report, however, was sent back to the

City of Cape Town’s property managementdepartment after ward councillor Berna-dette Le Roux questioned the absence of ob-jections.

Objections lostAccording to the new report, LeRoux sent

the contact details of several individualswho initially objected to the application butthis was rejected by Trevor Meisenheimer,

an official from the property managementdepartment, who said contact details didnotconstitute objections.“My question was what happened to the

objections that were sent. The report statesno objections but those people confirmedthey submitted objections. Their concernswere around the proximity of this station toexisting stations in the area,” Le Roux said. She said according to the City’s policy on

telecommunication base stations, therewasa restriction on the allowed distance be-tween such stations and believed this appli-cation was in conflict with this as there wasa station at the Hellenic Sports Club.“This road is a winding road. Therefore

the distance by road and aerially are differ-ent. If you look at the locations from the airyou will see they are closer than allowed,”she said. The new report which was recommended

for approval only listed Cell C and recom-mended amonthly rental of just over R9 000.Subcouncil chairperson Brian Watkyns

said therewas a significant difference in the

distance when looking at maps.

Visual impactHealso raised concerns about thepossible

visual impact and the value of the land ifthis lease was given the green light.“This land was previously earmarked as

prime land for possible sale. What wouldhappen to the value of the land if this leasewas given the go ahead?” he asked.According to Meisenheimer, it was for

this reason the City had an escape clause inthe lease.Watkyns recommended the application

be put on hold for further discussion withrelevant departments during the subcoun-cil’s activity day.“We need the planning and environmen-

tal resource management departmentshere,” he said.Councillors agreed and the application

was deferred.V Do you think the City should lease this propertyto a cellphone company? Send a letter [email protected].

Business plans for municipal wardsacross Milnerton, Table View andMelkbosstrand were signed last week.

The reports for each ward includingwards 4, 23, 104 and 107, were discussed andsigned by councillors of the BlaauwbergSubcouncil at the monthly meeting lastweek. Each report outlined the demograph-ics of the respective wards and the plannedprojects, upgrades and fund allocation. In Ward 4, which includes Century City,

Summer Greens, Killarney Gardens andMilnerton, ward councillor Joy McCarthysaid among the top priorities were re-block-ing Joe Slovo, providing ward allocationfunds for the subcouncil’s camera projectand the implementation of traffic calming

measures.“On the upgrade of the Joe Slovo settle-

ment, we acknowledge and accept there isno land available. So the only way to im-prove the circumstances is to re-plan and re-block. This is underway with human settle-ments [department].”McCarthy also raised concerns about ille-

gal extensions where buildings are beingrenovated to accommodate a series of roomswhich are then leased for a rental betweenR1200 and R1600 a month.“There are about 16 rooms built wall to

wall with no approved plans. There are at-least 20 in Joe Slovo and there are some pop-ping up in Phoenix. We are not sure if theyare being properly built and if they comecrashing down, the people underneath area concern. There should be a revenue andplanning investigation,” she said.

For Ward 23, which includes Melkboss-trand, West Beach, Blouberg, Big Bay andothers, councillor Grose outlined her con-tribution to the camera project as well as adedicated Law Enforcement officer andweed spraying. The availability of land was a hot topic as

councillors discussed plans for Ward 104which includes Dunoon, Doornbach andWestRiding. Councillor LubabaloMakelenisaid he hadheard of land beingmade availa-ble for housing and wanted to know whatthe City’s progress was on the matter. Ac-cording to the reports, Ward 107, has thehighest population, with 80 000 people.A community hall for Parklands was

marked in theplans forWard107.Accordingtoward councillor and subcouncil chairper-son Heather Brenner the ward desperatelyneeds a community hall.

A plan by Phoenix residents to form anew ratepayers’ association has beenlauded by the community.

The first meeting for the new associationwas held last week and an executive com-mittee was elected.Stanley Bolnik presided over the election

and informed residents of the new associa-tion’s plans and mandate. A constitutionwas drawn up and various committeemem-bers were elected, including Ursula Mar-shall as chairperson andLizzyNcala as vicechairperson.

Kept in the loopMarshall discussed the new constitution

and annual fees for the association. Mem-bers voted and the new constitution wassigned. The Phoenix Ratepayers’ Association

(PRA) will be registered with the City ofCape Town. According toMarshall this will

be done to ensure residents are kept in theloop during public participation on variousdevelopments. They will also be keeping aclose eye on liquor licence applications andrenewals.Speaking at themeeting, Ncala explained

their aim was to get the association up andrunning and facilitate discussions betweenresidents and businesses on a variety of is-sues.“The association will talk with various

role-players about the things that are affect-ing Phoenix. We will look at the taxi issuesand the informal traders aswell. This is ourcommunity and as ratepayers wemust lookafter the interests of our properties if wewant to build a future for our children,” shesaid.Ncala mentioned several municipal pro-

jects and highlighted plans to roll-out theMyCiTi bus service.“MyCiTi is coming and it’s going to affect

us. The problem is that we must have a say.We can’t stand against it so we must takepart and have our say. This is a big project

which is going to affect all of us,” she said.Ncala highlighted crime as a main con-

cern and explained that with the establish-ment of the PRA, as well as the neighbour-hood watch, residents needed to stand upand join the fight against crime.

Committed people needed“How many people even know we have a

neighbourhood watch? It’s time for all of usto stand up and take our area back fromcriminals. I hope you will all go home andspeak to your neighbours, tell them aboutthe new association and get everyone in-volved.“This will not be an easy journey and we

need committed people to steer this ship,”she concluded.OnSaturday 5 September at 15:00 the PRA

will host a meeting a the Phoenix Hall withCity officials to discuss municipal accountsand indigent grants for the poor or needy.Marshall says there will be an informationsession about the application proceduresfor the grant.

A Milnerton child and domestic workerescaped the clutches of a knife-wieldingintruder last week.According to a statement by Milnerton

CrimeWatch, the incident unfolded inEr-ica Road on Wednesday 26 August atabout 14:00. The domestic worker was re-portedly busy with laundry when shelooked up to find a male intruder behindher.“It appears he gained access to the prop-

erty by jumping over a neighbour’s wall. The intruder chased the domestic workerinto the house and used a knife to threat-ened her, but was interrupted when thefamily’s child, disturbed by the noise, walked into the room.

“The attacker allegedly pursued thechild, who quickly locked herself in thebathroom. At this point the domesticworker raced to the front of the house tocall for help. The attacker fled on foot,”state the Crime Watch.Milnerton Crime Watch Trust project

manager Craig Pedersen said a passingMilnerton Crime Watch patrol vehiclestopped to assist and waited with the do-mestic worker and child while the otherpatrol vehicle alerted police and scouredthe area for the suspect.“The suspect is described as 20 to 30

years of age, a blackmalewearing awhiteshirt and khaki trousers. Notably, he wasdescribed as having a large head and nu-merous scars on his face. Nobody was in-jured in the incident.”Milnerton police spokesperson War-

rant Officer Daphne O’Reilly confirmedthe case and said the victims have re-ceived trauma counselling from the localCommunity Intervention Centre (CIC).Pedersen also said there has been a no-

table rise in house break-ins and oppor-tunistic crime.“It’s important for people in the area to

make sure that gates are solidly closedand locked at all times. It’s equally impor-tant that domestic workers understandwho to call in an emergency and have themeans to do so via their own cellphonesor an emergency phone hidden some-where in the house with the relevantnumbers pre-programmed,” he says.O’Reilly could not confirm an increase

in house break-ins but said the hot spotsinMilnerton for house break-ins areMill-vale, Marais and Zastron roads.

One of the many dumping spots on erf 1117 near Big Bay PHOTO: MONIQUE DUVAL

MONIQUE DUVAL@monique_duval

A social media post relating to erf 1117sparked confusion in Table View lastweek. The post followed concerns over

illegal dumping on the vacant propertyowned by the national department of publicworks.

During a recent site visit with the TableView Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW), Tyg-erBurger documented dump sites which thewatch explained were a result of a lack ofcontrol over those living in the thick bushes. This was also confirmed by residents wholive in theTokkieTown informal settlement.

On Tuesday 25 August, a post relating tocomplaints about the illegal dumping on erf1117 was posted on the Ward 23 – City of CapeTown Facebook page.

According to the post the City parks de-partment conducted an inspection and ar-rangements were made to have the areacleaned.

Confusion over ownership“The area in question is due to be fenced

and hopefully this will prevent any furtherillegal dumping in the area. As it will befunded by the surrounding community, anMOU [Memorandum of Understanding]needs to be drafted and this is currently un-derway. Once the MOU is finalised, installa-tion is going to be arranged by the residentsvia a private contractor,” states the post.

It further states the City’s team has notedthe “illegal” use of 4x4 vehicles, which iscausing “considerable damage to the natu-ral environment”.

The post came under scrutiny from resi-dents who questioned how the City couldmake this statement when they had no juris-diction over the land. In addition, theyclaimed the illegal dumping was having abigger impact than 4x4 vehicles.

During the site visit, an official from thedepartment of public works was present.TygerBurger questioned the social media

post and according to the City’s mayco mem-ber for community services and special pro-jects, Belinda Walker, there has been someconfusion regarding the erf numbers ofthose properties where the clearing of ille-gally dumped materials and the cleaning ofthe open spaces occurred.

“Erf 1117 is not owned by the City. Thispropertywasnot cleanedas theCitydoesnothave jurisdiction here as it is owned by thedepartment of publicworks. TheCity-owned

public open space (POS) is found adjacent toErf 1117. It consists of various erven and itis this property that was cleared and cleanedof all waste material,” she explained.

Illegal dumpingQuestioned about the planned fencing and

MOU, Walker said while erf 1117 will not befenced, the MOU is for the fencing of City-owned landon the front section ofWindblomRoad only and is currently being finalised.

“The City is very aware and concernedabout the level of illegal dumping that is oc-curring here. It is hoped fencing of the area

will help to further resolve this concern. Inaddition, the City’s solid waste managementdepartment runs an integrated waste mini-misation and awareness campaign that isbeing implemented through carefully tai-lored initiatives that aim to engage commu-nities, schools, commerce and industry andthe public about minimising waste, reduc-ing littering, stopping illegal dumping andincreasing recycling,” Walker says.

Commenting on illegal dumping in publicopen spaces, she said the City Parks teamconducts cleaning in the greater Bloubergarea in line with the maintenance standards

for community parks and public open spa-ces.

“Where there are hot spots were regularillegal dumping occurs, these are attendedto in linewithbudget and resource availabil-ity. It is worth noting that illegal dumpingoccurs across Cape Town, which places anincreasingly challenging burden on theCity.”

V To report illegal dumping call 0860 103 089. Whatare your thoughts on illegal dumping in Table View?Send a letter with your opinion to [email protected].

With African Traditional MedicineWeek 2015 having come to an end on31 August, the Tygerberg Hospital

warned that combining herbal remedieswith conventional drugs can be harmful.A popular herbal remedy, Moringa Oleife-

ra (MO), colloquially known as “Saviour ofthe Poor”, could interfere with antiretrovi-ral treatment (ART) and have toxic effectswhenused concurrentlywithARTandotherconventional medicine, says Dr CharlesAwortwe, a researcher in clinical pharma-cology at the StellenboschUniversity Tyger-berg campus.“In South Africa up to eight in 10 people

with HIV use traditional medicines at sometime,” Awortwe says. His research on MO, also

called “Miracle Tree”, “Tree ofLife”, “Mother’s Best Friend” or“God’sGift toMan”, showed thattaking MO as a herbal supple-ment could potentially worsenthe health of patients on drugtreatment.MO is rich in protein, calcium,

iron and vitamin C, and is usedin the management of about 300medical and lifestyle conditions, includingHIV, cancer, arthritis, asthma, high cholesterol levels(hypercholesterolemia) andhigh blood sugar levels (hyper-glycaemia). It is also used as anaphrodisiac or to prevent preg-nancy. However, none of theseuses are currently supported bygood scientific evidence.“A major concern is the con-

comitant use of herbal medici-nes alongside conventional drugtreatments,” says Awortwe. “Itis well known that herbal prod-ucts can interfere with the en-zymes responsible for the chemi-

cal breakdown of drugs in the body andtherefore have an effect on the clinical effi-cacy of a drug or its toxicity.”Awortwe’s research found that MO in-

hibited two important enzymes – one re-sponsible for the breakdown of ART, car-diovascular and anti-anxiety drugs, andthe other responsible for the eliminationof drugs decreasing gastric acid secretion,anti-arrhythmics and anti-malarials –which could cause toxicity.According to Awortwe, one-third of cas-

es of acute kidney failure inAfrica are esti-mated to be caused by traditional medici-nes.Another important example of drug in-

teraction between herbal and convention-

al medicine is the birth of “miracle babies”in women who are taking oral birth controlat the same time as St John’sWort. This herb-al product stimulates the elimination of thehormones present in the birth control pills, thereby rendering it ineffective.“The use of herbal medicines is increasing

all over the world and many consumers as-

sume that because these products are herbalor natural, they are also completely safe, butthis is not true,” says Awortwe. He recommends that patients should

avoid takingMO togetherwith conventionaldrugs. “Patients already taking MO as sup-plement should inform their doctors aboutthis to avoid further harm.”

Muti could endanger patient health

Blowfish offers beautiful views of the city and Table Mountain – the perfect place for aspecial occasion.

Best beachfront venuefor your next eventZANNE GRIER

Near the city but far enough from the ur-ban hustle, Blowfish Restaurant in Blou-berg offers the perfect function venue.

Family and friends joined me for whatcould be the best birthday dinner of mylife. It was simple yet chic – Iwas planninga big 30th birthday bash, but at the lastminute decided to go for a more intimateand elegant dinner party. This turned outto be a great decision.Upon booking a complimentary consul-

tation with Werner, the resident eventplanner; he joked that they were made toentertain.

Situated at the landmark Dolphin Be-ach Hotel, Blowfish Restaurant was theperfect setting for my special day – post-card views of the city skyline, a warm am-bience and elegant décor. Amid a light eve-ning breeze, we startedwith champagnecocktails on the restaurant’s deck. Ourparty of 12 were seated at floor-to-ceilingwindowsoverlookingTableMountain andwere graced with a majestic sunset.

Dinner was a two-course set menu, in-cluding fusion sushi as starters and gene-rous seafood platters as our main course.

The food was reasonably priced and wewere served hearty portions. The location, the setting, and the VIP treatment gaveme the sense that the event was going tocostme an arm and a leg, but a two-coursemeal is priced at R129, while a three-coursemeal was priced at R159.Their eventmenu range fromset, bespo-

ke, and buffet, and includes a wide selecti-on seafood dishes, seasonal specialities, and (my favourite) sushi.Above all, the service was excellent. It

was perhaps the most positively influen-cing factor of the entire event. Staff trea-ted us like royalty.Great wine, good food, great company,

and tons of fun amid the crisp scent of thesea. Needless to say, I highly recommendthis restaurant.V For more information, or complimentary con-sultation, contact Blowfish Restaurant on 021556 5464 or email [email protected] to book your next celebration.

TheCity ofCapeTownsays it is preparedfor any catastrophe, having increasedits disaster preparedness where com-

munication is concerned.Details of a R23m investment to upgrade

the Terrestrial Trunked Radio (Tetra) digi-tal radio communicationsnetworkusing thelatest technology, were shared with the pu-blic last Thursday.

“The upgraded system will help improveresponse times of public safety agenciesacross the city,” said Xanthea Limberg, mayco member for corporate services andcompliance.

The details and capabilities of the newcommunication system, using Motorola So-lutions technology, were revealed at a mediabriefing at Protea Hotel Durbanville.

Limberg said the system will enhance the“safety of officers on the frontline”.

The Tetra network serves the City’s safetyand security and utility services officials(about 11 000) and some 2 500 users from sur-rounding municipalities.

“These Tetra radios also provide a vitalcommunication link between the City’s Me-tro Police department and community

neighbourhood watch (NHW) services.“Only NHW services that have a well-ma-

naged and secure public community controlroom are eligible for the installation of a Te-tra base radio,” said Limberg.

“We need to ensure maximum protectionof this essential public safety system and gu-ard against unauthorised use and, more es-

pecially, unauthorised monitoring,” shesaid.

Limberg said to put the R23 million intocontext, residents should realise that a re-placement system would cost around R300million.

“There is a need for adequate capacity du-ring emergencies,” she said.

The 30th International Coastal Clean-UpDaywill see scores of volunteers gatherat Woodbridge Island on Saturday 19

September from 09:00 to 12:00.Douw Steyn, director for sustainability at

PlasticsSA and chairman of the National Re-cycling Forum (NRF), says each year, thou-sands of kilograms of almost every imagina-ble type of waste are removed along theworld’s shorelines, and South Africa is rec-ognised as one of the leading participants inthis clean-up initiative.

The first International Coastal Clean-UpDay was held in 1996 as an initiative of theplastics industry and KZN Wildlife, to re-move the most visible plastic litter from thecoast. Since then, it has become an annualcountrywide event supported by the glass, cans, paper and board industries, as well asoil converters, recyclers, brand owners, re-tailers, BrandSA,KZNWildlife, TuffyManu-facturing, Pick n Pay, Garbie (East RandPlastics) and the Department of Environ-mental Affairs (DEA).

“All packaging streams, as well as oil ande-waste recyclers, will use Clean-Up and Re-cycle Week SA to spread the message aboutthe importance of looking after the environ-ment and ensuring that everybody takes re-sponsibility for recycling where they work, live or play,” Steyn says.

In Cape Town, major clean-ups will takeplace at Woodbridge Island. Beach and riverclean-ups are planned by communities, schools and businesses around the country.V For more information visit www.cleanup-sa.co.za.

Nature enthusiasts can celebratespring with a guided walk throughMilnerton Racecourse.

According to the City of Cape Town, theTable Bay Nature Reserve will host the an-nual walk from Tuesday 15 to Sunday 20September between 10:00 and 12:30 eachday.

During the Milnerton Racecourse guidedwalks, participants will be able to explorenormally inaccessible parts of the TableBay Nature Reserve.

“Outdoor enthusiasts can look forwardto being guided by the reserve’s site manag-er on the 2km walk through the beautifulsouthern area of the reserve usually closedto the public. This is yet another innova-tion in our quest to ensure the sustainabili-ty of our reserves and to make them moreaccessible to our residents. We can, howev-er, only achieve this with the support andwilling engagement of members of the pub-lic, said City mayco member for energy, environmental and spatial planning, Jo-han van der Merwe.

One of the reserve’s hidden gems is theCape Flats sand fynbos inside the old Mil-nerton Racecourse. So far, 218 plant specieshave been recorded at the Milnerton Race-course, 32 of which are on the Red List ofthe International Union for the Conserva-tion of Natural Resources. Most of thesespecies flower in spring.

This vegetation type is critically endan-gered and not normally accessible.

Visitors might be lucky enough to spotone of the resident Cape grysbokkies orother animals in the reserve, such as theCape clawless otter, water mongoose, angu-late tortoises, marsh terrapins, numerousspecies of butterfly and over 100 bird spe-cies.

Participants are asked to meet at the pub-lic open space next to the road at the thirdtraffic circle on Grand National Boulevardin Royal Ascot, Milnerton on the morningsof the walks. All children are most wel-come, but no pets will be permitted.

For enquiries or bookings, please contactLandi Louw on [email protected] or 021 444 7218. There is no costbut booking is essential.

Stodels Nurseries will be giving away 5 000trees for Arbor Day.

Since their Arbor Day project was laun-ched back in 1983, Stodels has given awaymore than 150 000 trees to encourage treeplanting.

At each of the five Stodels branches (Ke-nilworth, Bellville, Constantia, Milnertonand Somerset West) they will exchange abag of old newspapers or magazines for anindigenous tree on Friday 4 September.

“We have always been committed to theenvironment and through this project mo-re than 5 000 new trees will be planted,”says Stodels managing director Nick Sto-del, “but in addition to this, our country’snatural resources will be preservedthrough recycling.

“Arbor Week is an ideal opportunity forpeople to plant a tree and help off-set effectsof global warming. When you realise thaton average, one tree can absorb a ton of car-bon dioxide over its lifetime, then it justmakes sense to take up the challenge andembrace the Arbor Day ethos and plant anindigenous tree,” says Nick.

. To claim your free indigenous treefrom Stodels, simply take a bag – or manybags – of old newspapers and magazines toyour nearest Stodels branch on Friday 4September and make a trade exchange forthe environment.

There are two Trees of the Year for 2015,the common tree is the Genus Heteropyxis– or Lavender Tree and the rare tree is theVepris Lanceolata – White Ironwood.

Ai mense, dit is eintlik net“common sense”!

Re: “ Act to quell quarrels overwatch”, TB, 26 August. I thinkall these people are on powertrips. I have never seen acommunity forum acting likethis. They act as if they rankhigher than the police. Whatscared me was to see thesemembers or patrol staff carry-ing weapons. A couple of yearsago I went to my doctor at ParkWest and went down to theshop and walked into a complexpatrol officer who had a shot-gun. The shotgun almost hit mein the face.

Our police officers are noteven allowed to expose theirguns in public, or has this lawchanged?

I went to Knysna a whileback and their neighbourhoodwatch still patrolled on footwith whistles and torches. Theyalso have crime like us but arenot on power trips.

I have seen on numerousoccasions the complex patrol,Table View and Parklandsneighbourhood watch guysdriving like hooligans, disregar-ding traffic laws. They constant-ly speed and drive through stopstreets. I believe we have one ofthe best police stations in thecountry. Maybe neighbourhoodwatches should go back tobasics.

From every far flung corner of South Af-rica, toMoscowandHolland, audienceskeep asking for a way to experience his

acoustic magic at home.Bellville guitarist Loki Rothman has tak-

enheed and fromnextweek, fanswill be ableto take a live recording home with them onCD or DVD.Loki is known as a solo singer and song-

writer, as Jack Parow’s guitarist and asa producer, but it’s his “AugustRush style” guitar acrobaticsthat usually leave their mark. What makes Loki’s skills a

little unusual though is thefact that the 24-year-old wasbornwith a condition known asSyndactyly, the name he’s used asthe title for his new DVD and al-bum.Basically, Loki was born with

webbed fingers on both hands, which means he had to undergomore than 20 surgeries and physio-therapy before he could even pickup a guitar. This is no news to fans who have been

following his career since his appearance onSA’s Got Talent, but Loki has become asought-after guitarist since then.

Stand inAbout fouryears agohewasasked to stand

in for Fokofpolisiekar’s Johnny de Ridderfor some session work. The work turned outto be for Die Antwoord’s Ten$ion album andled to a chance meeting with producer Jus-tin de Nobrega, who asked him to work onJack Parow’s Eksie Ou.By the end of 2011, Loki was touring na-

tionally and internationally with Jack Par-ow. Last year Loki and Justin co-produced

the acoustic side of the rapper’sNagVanDieLang Pette, before co-writing the single“Strunk” forDieAntwoord’sDonkerMag al-bum.Between all of this, Loki was writing his

own music and getting a feel for the direc-tion he wanted to take as a solo artist. Hereleased his first single “Light these fires”about three years agowithoutmuch fanfare, but the song took off, landing hima top threespot on the national Kia Top 40 chart.“The responsewas so good I decided: ‘may-

be I should try this’.” So, Loki started think-ing about writing an album. “As I wrote thesongs I released the tracks I knewweregoingto be on the album.”“Clocks”wonhimaBokkieAward andhis

other big single, “See the light”, was re-leasedwhile hewas finishinghis album,TheWay Back, earlier this year.“I call it the singer/songwriter/producer

side ofwhat I do.” Loki says he doesn’t reallylisten to popular guitarists himself. “As aproducer I listen to a lot of pop music.” His10-track album, although varied, is more ofa pop rock album rather than the percussivesound people who’ve seen him live may ex-pect to hear.

‘One man band’He created Syndactyly for the fanswho wanted a product that represent-ed what they’d seen him play. His “one man band” cover videos

where Loki worked the chords for bass, beatand vocals for songs like “Uptown Funk”and LunchMoney Lewis’s “Bills” have been

getting attention on You-Tube and this is thestyle of footage fanscan expect on theDVD.“I wanted to make it

very simple,” he says.Loki will launch Syndactyly at Durban-

ville High School Auditorium on Friday 11September with saxophonist Hiram Koop-man and Chad Zerf on keys. Although it willbemore of a “guitar show”, the performancewill also feature Loki’s original songs.Tickets cost R90 or R80 for scholars and

pensioners and are available from Comput-icket.V For now, Syndactyly will only be available at Loki’sshows. The Way Back will soon be available in musicstores. Visit the Loki Rothman page for more abouthis music and the launch or visit his YouTube channelfor a taste of the DVD.

bring their own personality andideas to themusic sowe are ableto keep the music diverse andnuanced,” Gareth says.Saxit! recorded their self-tit-

led EP at SAE Institute inWoodstock which Gareth sayshas “a fantastic live room andequipment”.

The group spent time tryingout different microphones, micplacements and spacing to findthe perfect sound. They eventu-ally decided to record the EP li-ve without any over-dubs.“We tracked about two or

three takes of each song andchose the best out of the lot.”It was important for the quar-

tet that their endproductwasan“honest sound” with little pro-cessing and even left some oftheir mistakes in to give liste-ners more of a live experience. With their music being com-

pletely instrumental, Garethsays they wanted a varied selec-tion of sound to expose listenersto their different sides or styles.“Some compositions take on a

high energy groove whileothers are more laid back andharmonically rich.”At Saxit!’s launch tomorrow

Youngsters invade bowling greenSTEHAN SCHOEMAN

Bowls is growing in popularity in theWestern Province and becoming a“cool” sport. Gone are the days

when this pastime was labelled “oldman’s marbles”.Bowls is a sport for all ages, races, and

abilities. There is a massive interest among the

younger generation and with the upco-ming u.19 tournament to be held over theweekend of 2-4 October, excitement isbuilding up.Western Province, Boland and Eden

(SouthernCape)will battle it out for brag-ging rights in the Strand. At present, tri-als are still in progress to select the bestpossible team to compete come 2October.“We are very excited about this tourna-

ment and thehype around it. It just showsthat the future of bowls is looking brightand the talent that is coming through isa thrill to see,” said Western ProvinceBowls marketing and committee conve-nor Leon Venter.“We are also again presenting a social

business league at the Old Oak BowlingClub where we create a platform for com-panies to interact with one another and

obviously to introduce them to the ga-me,” said Venter.Bowls has great health benefits in that

it improves coordination and balance, keeps tendons and joints supple and exer-cisesmuscles and burns kilojoules, not tomention the enhanced mental well-beingthis low impact sport offers. On 24 September the Bellville Bowling

Club will host a Boobs for Bowls day inaid of breast cancer awareness. Variousclubs will also hold similar days in aid ofthis worthy cause.“I was fortunate enough to watch some

of theAustralianBowlsOpenwhen I visi-

tedmy children in June. There were over4 000 entries and the spirit at the eventwas fantastic. It was interesting to seethat AaronTeys became the second youn-gest male winner at the age of 21 and atthe age of 18, EllenRyanwon thewomen’sdivision.“That is the visionwe have.We are try-

ing our best to involve younger peopleand children at school. And let me tellyou, once the bug has bitten, it is notgoing to leave you,” said Venter.Contact Leon Venter on 082 881 1569, or

RACING: 14-YEAR-OLD TAKES TO THE TRACK

Youngsterto set aGTi recordADRIAN PHEIFFER

A new motor racing record will be setwhen 14-year-old Giordano Lupinifaces the starter for the firstGTiChal-

lenge race.During the seventh round of the Wing-field Motors sponsored (Flower) Power Se-ries at Killarney on Saturday, he will beco-me the Western Cape’s youngest ever maincircuit competitor.Although the boy has had a measure ofexperience on the go-kart track, it won’t beeasy. The GTi Challenge is a metallic con-tact sport and not for sissies. The cars are divided into three mechani-cally equal classes and it then up to thedriver to produce the results. Lupini’s op-position in a crowded class C is going to in-clude characters like Table View’s grittyreigning champion Paul Simon, EbrahimLevy, the man who would be king and thefast improvingDewaldLubbe.Theyare cer-tainly not going to make any allowance forhis age. However while Lupini’s debut will be in-teresting, Saturday’s high speed drama ismore likely to come from four of the fastestsports cars in South Africa. Because Gau-teng’s legendary Toby Venter is going to bein action here in his very special PorscheGT2R. He will be challenging a giant 8.4 li-tre, V10 Dodge Viper driven by Blaauw-berg’sCraig Jarvis aswell as current sportscar champion Francis Carruthers who willbe at the wheel of his potent Juno SS3.An additional threat is likely to be posed

by Johan Engelbrecht in another PorscheGT2R. This driver was in fine form whileon his way to victory at the most recent Po-wer Series meeting and the so far unbeatenToby Venter may be in for a surprise. The big one-makeV8 Supercar contest al-so promises to be a hard fought affair. Here, the reigning titleholder and former SouthAfrican Superkart championMarcel Angelis in overall second place behind the Bo-land’s Richard Schreuder. And although Angel won last month’sbattle, he is still five points behind Schreu-der and only one point ahead of a challen-ging Fabio Tafani, as the Series moves to-wards its close. Then watch out for Polodriver “Trappies” van Tonder in the MidasClubman class. Because although compe-ting in a lower category than class A hots-hots like Andre and Alex Johnson in theirAudi Quattros as well as the Beemers ofEbrahim Levy and Achmat Achmat andClintRennard’sVWGolf, hehasbeenpilingup the points and could even be in line fora championship victory. The full day’s entertainment is going toinclude a competition by radio stationKfm,with the prize of a helicopter flip over thecircuit and surrounding areas, going to theluckywinners. Other championship eventson the track will feature the big one-makeV8 Masters Cars, Makita Formula Super-cars, Mutlu Batteries Classic Cars and theCars Unlimited Fine Cars. The Mike Hop-kins races formotorcycles will cater for theSuperbikes, Clubman, Powersport andClassic categories.

The “Mavericks”Milnerton BaseballClub kicked offtheir season withan open day onSaturday. Activitiesincluded a juniorsocial game whichgave an opportuni-ty for many ofthese youngsters totry their hand atthe sport. Judgingby the smiles, agood time was hadby all and willhopefully result in afew new membersjoining in the leadup to the start ofthe upcomingseason.
