ANDRÉ BAKKES @andrebakkes T here was nothing odd about the way Kruben Moodliar celebrated his 71st birthday. He woke up at 03:00 to the sound of sherpas singing happy birthday in Nepalese, accep- ted a “blessed scarf” and then walked 14 and a half hours though freezing rain and sleet. OK, perhaps it was slightly odd. Kruben and his 68-year-old wife, Sham, re- cently became one of the oldest couples ever to climb up to Mount Everest’s Base Camp. At 5 364 metres above sea level, it is well over five times higher than what Table Mountain is. “Averaging 12 to 14 hours of climbing dai- ly, it was 200% more difficult than we ever imagined it would be,” says Sham. The trip lasted 16 exhausting days. “But we had set our minds set on it and there was no way either of us was going to give up,” continues the ever-determined Sham. “When times got really tough we egged each other on. On the mountain there is just you, your partner and your creator. Nothing else matters. It makes one very contemplati- ve and it crystallises the essence of life. It was very emotional, a hugely spiritual expe- rience.” Sham and Kruben, residents of Oasis Reti- rement Resort in Century City, underwent an intense 29 week training programme be- fore their adventure, which was designed by Oasis’ bio-kinetic trainer. “It changed every four weeks. We started in the gym at 06:00, working on the treadmill, and later walked 50 laps in the pool dragging buckets behind us. We also walked up 10 flights of stairs ten times a day wearing weighted vests,” re- members Sham “fondly”. “Later we walked round and round the Central Park field with tractor tyres filled with stones tied around our waists! We’re ve- ry grateful to Chris Blackshaw of the Centu- ry City Property Owners’ Association for af- fording us this opportunity. We hope we didn’t ruin the grass!” Weeks of training finally paid off when they completed their journey. V To page 2. “We were first captivated by the majesty ofEverest when we saw it at sunset from aneight-seater Cessna some years ago. It’s themost impressive thing to see. It has an in-credible magnetism to it – it literally gaveus goosebumps. And somewhere it lodgedat the back of the mind that we needed tospend more time in the Himalayas,” shecontinues. One of the two experienced sherpas told

the couple that he had never taken anyonetheir age to Base Camp before. There are so many memories that will

stay with Sham and Kruben forever.

“Due to the numerous landslides and soforth there is no path as such. You have tostep over huge boulders testing each onewith your sticks to ensure it is safe to stepon. Walking on the mountain in daylight isscary enough, but by night was another ex-perience. These sherpas are unreal, howtheyknowtheirwayoverboulders, throughrivers and ice is unbelievable!”Creaking glaciers and the roaring of dis-

tant avalanches were also unforgettable. On Kruben’s birthday, and the day of the

final trek to Base Camp, they got up at 03:00to start the climb from Gorakshep.

The sherpas sang to Kruben and present-ed him with a blessed scarf they got froma monastery, as well as a bouquet of moun-tain anemone flowers picked the night be-fore.For the first few hours the silver glow of

the moon was their companion and thenthey were battered by rain and sleet. What was supposed to be an eight hour

journey to Base Camp and back became atreacherous 14 hour trek.As for their next adventure, Sham jokes

by saying that the family hopes and praysthey won’t be scaling a volcano.

Rehab turns life aroundMICHELLE LINNERT

“Former” and “heroin addict” rarelygo together. Yet Craig O’Brienmastered this feat. Now, after nu-

merous stints in prison and learning thehu-mility of homelessness, he runs a home forrecovering addicts in Kraaifontein.

Craig attended The Settlers High andgrew up in Boston. His story is not unlikemany others onemay have heardbefore: the almost 50-year-oldcomes from a good, conservativehome, he says. “But I’ve alwaysbeen very inquisitive”.

This, coupled with a rebelliousand self-proclaimed “naughty”nature, saw Craig start his drugexperimentation with dagga.

He tells a captivating story ofhow hewas constantly in troubleat school, expelled, and later be-came a military conscript be-cause his father “knew a Corpo-ral at the Castle”.

All hewanted todowasbecomeanair steward.Ordo art, “butmydad wouldn’t let me”.

Drug careerWhen Craig was done with his

military term, he started work-ing at his father’s industriallaundry company by day, andmoonlighting as a nightclubmanager by night.

Then his drug career pro-gressed to “taking cocaine onweekends”.

He met his wife, Storm “andfell madly in love”. They weremarried in 1990. Then the inci-dent that sparked Craig’s accel-erated downward spiral happened.

His friend shot his wife.It was an accident, but the hollow point

bullet tore through Storm’s arm and stom-ach. “The doctors had to shave her hip toput bone in her arm,” he tells. “They hadto cut through her belly button; to this dayshe has a thick scar up her arm and herthumbs work a bit funny.”

Storm tried heroin to dull the pain.“Stupidly, I got her the stuff. Then I start-

ed using.”

He tells how“chasing thedragon” eventu-ally turned into injecting intravenouslywhile he could still afford his habit. Butthen he was retrenched. “I was going for in-terviews, being told I’m too white, too old.I started eating intomy savings, they got de-pleted; eventually we started to pawnthings.

“I was beginning to hate my life now. Mylife was this drug.”With no job and nomon-ey to support his habit, he turned to crime

– serious fraud and shoplifting.“The cycle goes on and on. It eventually

caught up with me.”Craig was in and out of prison, cheating

his way out of house arrest at the Durban-ville police station by setting up fraudulentcompanies in his late mother-in-law’sname.

All the while his wife was still using. Andlying. “An addict blends the lie with thetruth. To this day I hate liars.”

When he went to Goodwood Prison the

second time around, he met house FatherRodney Pringle, who introduced Craig to anew spiritual journey. “I couldn’t handlethe happy-to-do fake pastors in my cell – Iknew they were rapists,” he says.

He came out of jail earlier than expected. He didn’t know “Mr Zumawas going to giveus all amnesty,” Craig laughs. Storm hadtaken a lover, albeit with his blessing.

Craig eventually ended up at The Havennight shelter in Bellville. His life was

changed.He eventually became clean by

avoiding drug dealers around theshelter.

Knack for troubled teensTucked safely under the wings of

manager Sharon Malan, he pro-gressed from cook to supervisor.Craig soon realised he had a knackfor working with troubled young-sters, especially addicts. His heartand ears seemed to be just the rightreceptacle to absorb their troubles.

A job opening came up with thepeople from the social developmentorganisation Metro EvangelicalServices, or MES.

“Sharon urgedme to go for the in-terview,” he said. Although he hadno faith that he would get the job asmanager of MES’s new facility forsecond phase recovering addicts inKraaifontein, Craig got a call-backthe same afternoon.Says Ilse Els, manager of MES:

“Craig impressed us during his in-terview with his passion to help de-pendent people. He has a very soberoutlook on life andhumilitywith re-gards to his own success story. Weare really happy to have him as partof our team.”

Sharonagrees. “Craig’s is anamazing sto-ry. What a journey – we are really proud ofhim and know he has what it takes to makethis new home a success.”

Storm is still on the streets and theirdaughter is soon to be married to a “verygoodman –more than any father could everask for”, says Craig.

And althoughhis aspiration to become anair steward never panned out, Craig says:“I am lucky enough to end up doing exactlywhat I love – this is my calling.”

One death in a weekend of firesANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

The fire that destroyed Midmar BottleStore on the corner of Boundary and Koe-berg roads last week Friday ushered in abusy weekend for the City of Cape Town’sdisaster response team.

Nine other fires in Cape Town left 111 peo-ple displaced.

A busy weekend was waiting in the wingswhen the Disaster Operations Centre re-ceived a call at 04:10 last Friday, informingthem that the Midmar Bottle Store was onfire.

No injuries were reported, but the con-

tents of the store were completely de-stroyed.

“It was discovered that the cause of thefire was arson,” says Fire and Rescue Serv-ices’ Liezl Moodie.

The case is currently being investigated. Then on Friday night the first of three

fires in Wallacedene broke out.“At 19:52 a fire occurred at Wallacedene.

It involved 11 shacks leaving 27 people dis-placed,” says Wilfred Solomons-Johannes,Head of Systems Integration and SpecialProjects.

“The next one in Wallacedene happenedat 18:03 on Saturday. It destroyed two infor-mal structures, leaving eight people dis-placed. Then at 16:38 on Sunday a fire in

Mphandle Street destroyed two struc-tures,” he said.

Two fires in Elsies River, the first at 11:49on Saturday and the second at 16:36, leftthree people displaced.

One person died as a result of a fire in Gu-gulethu at 03:00 on Sunday morning.

According to Solomons-Johannes the de-ceased was “burned beyond recognition”.

“The City’s disaster response teams pro-vided food parcels, clothing, vanity packs, blankets and building material to the affect-ed victims. The cause of these fires is unde-termined at this stage. The City of CapeTown with local law enforcement authori-ties will probe an investigation into the pre-ceding events to establish the causes.”

More than 90% of nine-year-old girls in theWestern Cape are now protected againstHPV related cervical cancer.

This is the result of an HPV vaccinationcampaign, organised by the Western CapeGovernment Health in collaboration withlocal primary schools.

Western Cape health minister TheunsBotha stated, “The uptake by all role play-ers of the immunisation has been wonder-ful. HPV related cervical cancer is responsi-ble for the death of many young women. Wehope that through this vaccination, whenthese young girls are wives and mothers,we will see a significant decline in the inci-dence of HPV related cervical cancer.

“This not only speaks into our goal of im-proving the wellness of our society, but alsoto the financial implications for householdswho need to care for a family member whois ill. Well done to all those involved inachieving this remarkable coverage.”

The HPV campaign took place in two

rounds, the first round saw coverage of 87%whereas the second round in October foundthat not only had a number of girls becomeeligible for the vaccination, but many moreparents signed consent forms thus enablingtheir daughters to be vaccinated. This smallgroup (approximately 13% of the totalgroup), will receive their booster shot du-ring the 2015 campaign which will take pla-ce in February and March and again in Sep-tember and October.

Immunisation is available free of chargeat all health facilities and at a number ofpartner organisations. The Human Papillo-mavirus (HPV) immunisation is currentlyonly offered to girls attending publicschools and are nine years old during Grade4.

Those parents who wish to have their ol-der daughters vaccinated can consult theirlocal pharmacy.

Vaccination remains the safest method toprevent illness, Botha says.

The cause of the incident is not yet known.

The City of Cape Town will deploy ateam of dedicated field workers overthe festive season to assist with any

street people-related matters, while 14 Lo-cal Networks of Care will operate in vari-ous communities to deter migration to thestreets.

Out of the 9 000 homeless people in CapeTown, an estimated 120 reside in Good-wood, but homelessness is increasing everyday.

So says Suzette Little, mayco member forsocial development and early childhood de-velopment. “It is true that more and morehomeless people are taking to the streets ofCape Town and Goodwood also experiencesthis influx. The public parks, unoccupiedbuildings and wide verges as in Vasco Boul-evard, Wiener Street Park, Hanekom Park, parking area behind Shoprite Checkers inHugo Street, Rail reserve near Monte VistaStation, throughout N1 City, footway Din-gle and Wallace Street are the places theystay,” says Little.

She says the city’s law enforcement unitsare constantly engaged in removing peoplefrom places where residents complain ofthe street people’s presence, with very littleobvious effect. “These people just move toanother place within Goodwood. The rea-son they return is that it is to their advan-tage to remain in Goodwood on the street.Well meaning and compassionate residentsstore the street people’s belongings and

bedding, give them food and drink, employthem for domestic and gardening choresand allow them to scavenge through therefuse bins in for recyclable items. The pro-ceeds from the recyclables and gifts or do-nations help these vulnerable people to re-main in Goodwood.

“One motor dealer protected the streetpeople from being removed by law enforce-ment officials, by maintaining these peoplewere regarded as “security guards”. Lawenforcement officers were recently verbal-ly abused and chased away by propertyowners on Vasco Boulevard when attempt-ing to remove vagrants as a result of theiranti-social behaviour. These actions by res-idents and property owners conflict withthe efforts of law enforcement,” argues Lit-tle.

The city and province has embarked ona “Give Responsibly” programme in whichresidents are given the option to become in-volved with government to address theplight of street people. “To alleviate theplight of street people the churches of Good-wood during the 1990s established the ElimNightshelter as a place of safety. The de-mand for accommodation at this nightshel-ter exceeds the supply of space. A compli-cating factor is that many of these streetpeople refuse to go to the nightshelter be-cause they would be subjected to the disci-pline of being of sober habits and wouldhave to pay a nominal fee for a plate of food,a bed and the opportunity to wash.”V The City’s dedicated Street People Call Centre canbe reached on 0800 827 201.

Thieves posingas workers strippublic property

This is the first bakkie whose passengers allegedly stole gravel from an electricity substation inBoston.

MICHELLE LINNERT@linnertmb

They come in neon vests as if they are coun-cil workers, when in actual fact they arestealing from the council – and residents –while pretending to be hard at work. This was the case when Janeen Acker-

mann vanHeerden recently saw some suspi-cious activity inBoston at an electricity sub-station while on her way to fetch her sonfrom a playdate.“I was driving past the substation in 13th

Avenue in Boston when I saw one man in-side the fencing and one standing on the out-side,” Janeen said.“The one on the outside had a wheelbar-

row and was continuously accepting a filledspade from the one on the inside,” she said.“I calledmyhusband to check this out, see-

ingas itwas 18:00 in the evening –whoworksat that time, digging for things?” she said.Janeen realised to her shock that they

were busy “loading gravel from the substa-tion” into the wheelbarrow.Janeen’s husband went out and followed

the group of men to a private residencewhere they stopped and tried to sell the grav-el.“My husband said they wanted to sell the

gravel for R1500, but then he alerted the resi-dent that it was stolen property. The resi-dent then wanted nothing further to do withit.”She said her husband went to look for pa-

trolling police officers and sawa second bak-kie. “He counted about 15 men in vests,” shesaid. Her husband told the men to leave the ar-

ea, which they did.“I reckon the council should follow this

up. It was their property that was stolen.”PierreGouws, owner of theDistrict Group

of security companies, told TygerBurger histeam had seen this same modus operandi atcity parks, which were being stripped bare.

“On a regular basis we come across peoplewith bakkies, orange lights and reflectivebibs, that look like people working, but arenot. They do this because people generallythink that it is municipality workers or sub-contractors doing work,” Pierre said.“On many occasions they are the people

that are stealing from the community orstripping the communities and City Of CapeTown of its assets.”He said they found more and more car

guards, actually “trolley pushers” with thesame vests on.The thieveswere alsoknown toput orange

cones around park equipment “to make itlook official”.In an incident on 3 November, Pierre’s

team investigated a callout of a bakkie, withan orange light on its roof, parked in frontof a Montague driveway. “making it looklike a maintenance vehicle”.He says the occupants were standing out-

side the bakkie pretending to be fixing it.When security officers appeared, they spedoff. The occupants were followed and pulled

over by the security staff at a business inMonte Vista Boulevard, with the Goodwoodpolice hot on their heels, Pierre says. Then, in June last year, an incident was

recorded where three suspects were arrest-ed, also in theMonte Vista are, for removingthe swings and frames in the park at AlgoaCrescent there, Pierre said. The suspects were tampering with the

swings and told an approaching security of-ficer “they were working for a sub-contrac-tor and they needed to remove the swingsand frames”, Pierre says. The Goodwood police were alerted again,

and arrested the three.Captain Fienie Nimb, Bellville police

spokesperson, said no charges of damage topublic property, or sale of stolen property re-lating to the Boston incident had been laidat the Bellville police station. This is the second bakkie spotted by Janeen’s husband operating in Boston.

A total of 47 teams from 20 depots are res-ponsible for repairing potholes and in atleast 80% of the cases the teams meet theCity’s own benchmark of fixing a potholewithin 72 hours of it being reported. So says the City’s mayoral committee

member for transport for Cape Town(TCT), Brett Herron.“This is a very high standard to main-

tain, given the fact that the city’s roadnetwork comprises 10 629 kilometres andevery inch of it has to be managed byTCT. One must admit that it is quite anachievement that over 80% of potholesare fixed within three days when each ofthe 47 teams has to repair at least 260 po-tholes every month.”Residents report at least 250 potholes to

the City’s call centre every week and theother potholes are identified by the su-pervisory staff at TCT’s depots. “A C3(fault reporting notification) is generatedfor every pothole that a resident reportsvia theCity’s fault reporting system.Thisreport is sent to the relevant area depot, whichpasses it on to the responsible crewto undertake the repairs. This admini-strative process can take up to a day, butinmost cases it is sorted outwithin amat-ter of hours. The teamwill inspect the siteandmake the road safe for road users, eit-her by repairing the pothole there andthen or by demarcating the area if an im-mediate repair is not possible.“Sometimes delays are caused by incle-

ment weather, the unavailability of as-phalt to fix the potholes, or the break-down of equipment. However, one of ourbiggest challenges is that thewrong infor-mation in relation to the location and ad-dress of the pothole is often reflected onthe C3 notification system. In this instan-ce residents can greatly assist TCT byproviding the correct addresses.’’The City does proactive maintenance

work as well, such as the resealing andresurfacing of roads to prevent potholes.“The majority of potholes form when wa-ter penetrates the asphalt due to the crac-king of the road’s asphalt surfacing;when roads have to carry higher volumesof traffic than they were originally desig-ned to carry; orwhen routinemaintenan-ce has not taken place due to fundingavailability. Grey water discharge ontoroads and other sources of water such asnatural underground springs are alsocontributing factors.“In the current financial year, TCTwill

spend nearly R464 million on road main-tenance, of which R110 million is alloca-ted for the repair of potholes.Weurge ourresidents to please report potholes to theCity, either by phoning our call centre on0860 103 089 or by using the TCT app (mo-bile application). TCT relies on residentsto be our eyes and ears on the ground, gi-ven the fact that 81% of our road network(8 649 kilometers) is suburban roads,’’says Herron.

Waggle and Walk: The 21st SPCA MyPlanet Wiggle Waggle Walkathon took place recentlyat the Cape Academy for Maths and Science in Constantia and saw over 1 300 people andnearly 1 000 dogs take part in the walk. Putting their best paws forward, participantsmanaged to raise roughly R140 000 for the SPCA – funds that will be used to protect andcare for animals over this festive season, where inspectors are needed most. Here areStephen le Grange and Judy Coleman from Table View with their dogs, Breeze and Light.

The Richwood Sport and Recreation Centrewas filled with early Christmas celebrationand jubilant cheers recently.

The Elundini Special Care Centre locatedin Dunoon celebrated its annual Christmasparty culminating in a graduation of learn-ers clad in full graduation regalia.

The day was filled with children’s laugh-ter, the sugar-scented smell of candy floss,Santa Clause arriving on a fire engine anddistributing Christmas goodies to the chil-dren of Elundini. The general entertain-ment of the day included a ballet, sports ac-tivities, activity tables such as decorate-a-cupcake, play dough fun, loom bands andface painting.

The day would not have been possiblewithout the joint collaboration of the dedi-cated staff of Elundini, all sponsors, Santa’shelpers in the kitchen and the MilnertonFire Department all lending a hand to bringChristmas cheer to the children of Elundi-ni. Founded in 2008 by principal Indy Kawa-na who saw the growing need for a specialcare centre, the Elundini Centre was estab-lished to meet the physical and emotionalneeds of mentally and physically chal-lenged children in the areas of Dunoon, Ta-ble View and Joe Slovo Park.

Today the centre caters for 100 childrenand provides three nutritious meals per dayfor all learners.

The City of Cape Town has made it clearthat solicitation of Christmas donations bymunicipal staff is forbidden. Any contribu-tions are purely voluntary.

“The City of Cape Town would like to ad-vise residents that the solid waste manage-ment department enforces a policy whichstrictly forbids its personnel from askingresidents for ‘Christmas boxes’ and solici-ting any donations. Staff have been remin-ded that this practice is prohibited.

“If, however, residents believe that excel-lent service has been provided, they are ofcourse at liberty to give a voluntary donati-on to staff as a gesture of thanks and good-will, but under no circumstances shouldthey be approached and asked for money.

“City staff are appropriately remunera-ted. It would be appreciated if residentscould report any incidents of intimidationby City staff to the call centre on 0860 103089 during office hours.

Apart from the date, time, and place, a ve-hicle registration number should be provi-ded so that the culprits can be identified.Such reports will be investigated immedia-tely and, where residents are willing to tes-tify, the City will be able to take disciplina-ry action against the offenders,” says theCity’s mayco member for utility services,Ernest Sonnenberg.

Refuse collection services will remainunchanged during the festive period, evenon public holidays.

As an avid animal lover, thephotograph of the starvingpuppy sickened me for severalreasons (Lewenskiekie, 3December).

The caption reads “Ek soeknet kos” and further on“babahondjie kyk net ander-pad”.

This was all happening whilepolice were looking for perpe-trators “in ’n misdaad opera-sie”.

Whoever owns this dog – ifanyone – is a criminal.

I cannot, for the life of me,think why you would publishsomething like this. To whatend?

If your photographer was sotouched by this puppy’s plight– take it to the SPCA and thenrather publish a before andafter picture when it has beentaken care of, rehabilitated andput in a home where peoplewill give it the love it soobviously needs.

Take R50 out of your walletif have to.

The only reason this puppyis standing so still and “pos-ing” for the photographer isbecause the poor thing hasnowhere to run.

As an animal lover, I am ofthe conviction that animalsand humans all have rights.Human babies depend on theirparents, young puppies dependon the people who own them.

And this picture had thesame effect on me as if youhad published a picture of anewborn baby dumped in arubbish bin. No regard.

I would like to respond to therecent letters about guns by P.van Wyk and Charl van Wyk.Both claim more guns in thehands of “good” people willlimit crime, which is of course

a myth.I follow their tirade in most

newspapers. Both are alsopro-death penalty activists. Itseems their whole outlook onlife is one of anger, hatred andvengeance.

Charl was the guy who hadhis gun in the St James Churchmassacre in 1993 claiming thelives of 11 people. He claims hislittle gun prevented a biggerdisaster, but most of us believeit was only the hand of God.Those evil folks had biggerguns and even hand grenades.

I once read that Charlpropagates the fallacy thatbecause Simon Peter carried asword, the weapon of Biblicaltimes, we must all also carryguns to protect us.

But most of us believe ourMaster taught us to put oursword away because “those wholive by the sword will die bythe sword”.

If we look at the misery anddevastation guns are causing allover the globe, no sane personwill instigate more fear intosocieties by telling us all tocarry guns. It is wholly unreal-istic and dangerous.

If God cannot protect us,what can? Guns? Anyone thatsupports the death penalty andviolence is himself a potentialmurderer.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Hot Water frontman Donovan Copleywafts into the WP Media office like afresh of breath air.

His calming presence is violently juxta-posed to his vibrant outfit or “colourgemors” as he calls it, but then, the CapeTown singer says he loves colours, andmorespecifically, loves mixing them.“I like tomixmusical genres and colours,”

says Donovan. He is also passionate about South African

rhythms and loves finding crossover points.Think Ghoema meets Sakkie and you’re onthe right track. The rest of his band reflects this perfectly.

While members change, they always comefrom very different music genres.Readers may be familiar with HotWater’s

single, “Wamkelekile”, which was used intheAmericanFilmBlended, and is currentlyenjoying high rotation on local radio sta-tions, but a quick listen to one of his albumswill show that there’s much more to Dono-van’s music.

Township feel“I think at the heart of it, I’m really a folk

musician, but I happen to come from SouthAfrica.”When askedwhere his ideas aboutmixing

cultural references come from, Donovansimply points to heart.“When I started to play guitar, sometimes

the things I played just sounded sort of town-ship-style and that’s what I felt.” He says hismusic and his band came from an explora-tion on what it felt like “to be me”.His new album is a continuation of that

exploration. Donovan will be releasing Son-goma (sic) at Kirstenbosch on Sunday 28 De-cember.“I think it’s a real stamp of the sound that

I’vedevelopedor exploredwith the last threealbums.”The album name comes from a conversa-

tion Donovan had with a stranger one day.He was looking for a word that would de-scribe who he is, what he does and his life’spurpose. He was giving an African womana lift and she pointed out that the beads onhis wrist are oftenworn by sangomas or nat-ural healers. He felt like he could relate.“Songs sort of come from an invisible

place, so where is it that you go to collect asong?” For Donovan, there’s a transforma-tive aspect to writing music so he said: “Iguess you can call me a songoma.”

He describes his “hybrid”word as fun andcheeky, which perfectly encapsulates hismusic. From a production side, he says he’s also

taken a step forward, working with two pro-ducers, including Aron Turest-Swartz, afounding member of Freshlyground.“Aron really got, and gets what it is I’m

doing.”He recorded at Monte Bello Studio and

says working with producers gave him thespace to focus on the delivering the music.“I think it’s distilled HotWater,” Donovan

says of the new album. He says the concertat Kirstenbosch will also reflect that.

Founding venueFanswill beable tohearold favourites like

“Bush Fire” alongside songs from the newalbum, including an Afrikaans song, “Voor-trekker”.“We’re going to have fun, that’s all I can

guarantee,” he says.Donovan says he loves Kirstenbosch. He

In 1998 verskyn Ferreira se eerste roman,

Daarop volgEenmaal iets dap-pers.

In 2012 verskyn Ferreira se be-kroonde jeugverhaal, Tot siens, ko-ning Arthur.

MAGRIET THERON@magrietron

Rory MacKay, aka Inspector Gadget, hasstate-of-the-art tools on him and in his Gadg-et Mobile - an eight-year-old Chana Star 1.3lvan - but says he uses most of them for oneof his day job as entertainer. In his sparetime, theyhelp as eyes and ears for thepoliceand to serve his community.

“It all started with a motorcycle accidenta couple of years ago. I was on my way home

from Camps Bay, where I was entertainingas a robot, so I was dressed in full combatgear.

“A vehicle with a trailer cut in front of meand I collided with the trailer.

“People who were staying in the bushesnearby were on the scene first. They sawthat my hand was basically off and usedcardboard from the bushes to put around myarm and hand. Then a doctor stopped at thescene in a private vehicle. A lady also ap-peared from nowhere and wrapped her scarfaround my wrist,” Rory recalls.

He remembers waking up in the hospital, with his hand “wired back on” and beingable to move his fingers.

He this incident sparked a desire to helpother. “That is also why I do the gadgetingstuff. I do have clinical depression, but whenI am in my character as Gadget, I am fine.”

Today he has a reconstructed wrist and re-gained 80% use of his arm and hand.

“For my day job I always need things likemy leatherman and my torch. Those two aremy favourite gadgets.”

He also has a whole lot of stuff in his van.“Anything can happen when I am on the

road. There’s a first aid kit, night visionequipment, a chain saw, paintball marker,a dash-mounted videocamera, fire and roadbreakdown gear, a spade, an axe, emergencyentry tools, fire extinguishers, jumper ca-bles, cones, a 4-meter collapsible ladder andbits and bobs I carry with me. I also havea proper fireman’s helmet.

“If I get to a scene, where an officer mightbe standing with his blue lights flashing and

a flat torch, I will stop there, put my hazardson and ask if they need assistance. I will putmy cones out and my torch will be working. They will say: ‘Oh you are quite prepared, you are like the gadget man!’ Yes, well, that’sme.”

Buthe stays away fromconflict situations.“We are there to observe and I believe that

visibility is a deterrent.”To better his surveillance when patrol-

ling, he has a CCTV camera on top of his vanwith a screen that pops down on the inside. He also uses a GoPro camera on a helmet toprovide evidence in situations.

“The neighbourhood watch is not sup-posed to become involved in skirmishes.

Since he was a child, Rory was interestedin the art of magic and inventions.

He performed tricks from the age of fiveand after completing his studies, he workedas an entertainer on a floating casino. Thenhe joined the Brian Boswell roadshow as,amongst other things, a flying trapeze artistand stunt man.

He does not boast about gadgets he in-vents, but shared the Gadget Mobile’s self-starter with TygerBurger. After the van isunlocked with the remote, Rory says:“Start!”, and the engine switches on. Onceordered to “Switch off!”, the engine cuts out.The secret, he says, is a little Asian technolo-gy and a little Inspector Gadget magic.

The Danny Abrahams Ex FootballersFund is the birth of a project aiming toassist old players who are in dire need

of financial assistance.Ivan Jack (Elsies River) and Douglas Ka-

relse (Kraaifontein) are themasterminds be-hind the fund and are trying to relieve somepressure off their former teammates.Jack played for Elsies River from 1970 to

1992 and Douglas played professional soccerfor Cape Town Spurs from 1970 to 1988.“We applied to register the fund as a NPC

(non-profit company) some four months agoandwegot thegreenlight lastweek.Thiswillreally help us in our cause to approach com-panies and individuals to sponsor us in anyway they see fit,” said Jack.Former Cape Town Spurs star Danny

Abrahams was the initial spur for the fund.Abrahams, who struggles financially andhas Alzheimers, has benefited greatly fromhis friends.“It’s difficult to see howyour former team-

mate struggles. Dougie and I said we can’tjust sit back and watch him and other play-ers struggle theway they do.We felt the urgeto jump in and help,” Jack says.“It’s a great feeling, helping them in wha-

tever way we can. Every now and then wewill host a dance and raise a bit of moneyfor these chaps. We are hoping to get somesponsors in thenewyear to assist us in bette-ring their lives.“Having said that, we are very positive we

can get some sponsors on board, there is so-me interest from companies and individualswanting to get involved but we had to waitto get registered as aNPC. Now that we havethe papers, it is all systems go. We will also

approach Safa and see if they can help us inany way possible,” he said. The fund committee will also have a

monthly meeting and see who they can as-sist in that given month.“Sometimeswewill just go and have a cup

of tea and chat about the good old days. Itis truly heart warming to help these guysand see how thankful they are. This is whywe dowhatwe do. To be there for our friendsand help make life just a little bit better onegood deed at a time,” said Karelse.Phone Ivor Jack on 083 241 5847 of Douglas

Karelse on 084 286 1292 to get involved withthe fund or make any contributions.

tjie-sege Montrose (112) druipstert huistoe gestuurnáveral stewige bydraes deurGiovanni Hulley (4/20), Dillon Verreyne

(44) enChristiaanMocke (34*).

Sports facilities across the Cape are fall-ing prey to the acts of brazen vandalsand thieves.

A total of 55 sports complexeswere vandal-ised and burgled between April and Novem-ber. A staggering 217 incidents were report-ed during this period, the city confirms.Sports clubs and facility management

committees are calling on the city to step upsecurity, as they fear the continuous crimi-nal activities may stifle or end operations atthe organisations and facilities.Bennet Bailey, chairperson of the Rygate

Local Football Association (LFA) whichcalls Johnson Road Sports Complex in Ry-lands its home, says vandals stripped the fa-cility in the first week of October – only acouple of weeks after the end of the footballseason. He claims the damage amounts toR200 000, a cost they cannot cover.“The interior of the clubhouse was

stripped bare. All the cabling and wiringwas removed. The wiring of the floodlightswas also removed and the electricity box re-moved and damaged,” Bailey says.Similarly, chairperson of the Metropoli-

tan LFA, Wayne Weitz, says the Metropoli-tan Sports Complex in Bonteheuwel was hit

at the end of October. The facility wasstripped to resemble a shell and the organi-sation had to replace the trophies and med-als for its annual prizegivingdays before the event.“Everything was fine dur-

ing the season, except for theodd burglary, but when theseason ended and there wasless activity at the facility, the criminals pounced.“The MFMC is constantly

reminded that it is not theowner of the facility, but on-ly the custodians. Yet theowner, the city, doesn’t takeresponsibility for its assets.”In local sporting circles,

Weitz adds, there has beentalk of several facilities being vandalisedover the last couple of months. “There wasa time when security guards were placed atthe facility, but they informed us their con-tract had come to an end and that was theend of security,” he explains.“The city spends millions upgrading and

maintaining facilities, so I believe theyshouldprotect it or theworkwill beuseless.”TygerBurger has reported on incidents at

the Wesbank Sports Complex, DurbanvilleSports Complex and Ruyterwacht Sports

Complex, while its sister publicationCityVi-sion reported on incidents at the Gugulethuand Philippi swimming pools.

Furthermore, it’s othersister publication, People’sPost has reported on burgla-ry and vandalism at severalsports facilities across thepeninsula over the last cou-ple of months. These includethe Stephan Reagan, Rock-lands and Strandfonteinsports complexes, andSwartklip Indoor SportsCentre in Mitchell’s Plain, the Hoosain Parker SportsComplex in Parkwood andthe Johnson Road SportsComplex. Burglary and van-

dalism were also reported at clubhouses atKraaifontein Sports Complex.Despite the number of incidents, the city

says it cannot provide continuous securitypresence.Mayco member for community services

and special projects, Belinda Walker, says a“limited budget” of R36m was allocated forsecurity in the department budget.“The department has had to rationalise

the use of security personnel at some of itsfacilities to remain within the allocated

budget in the current financial year,” shesays.“The departmentmanages a large number

of public facilities across the city and hasidentified hotspots where facilities are par-ticularly vulnerable to theft and vandalism– security personnel will be present at thesefacilities. It is closelymonitoring these facil-ities to find the most effective and financial-ly sustainable options for securing them.”But security guards aren’t the only option,

Walker adds, as the city has invested consid-erably in fences and alarms. It is also work-ing to create partnerships with communityorganisations such as neighbourhoodwatches to help deter theft and vandalism. The city has spent R4,8m on repairs and

replacements at facilities which have fallenvictim to theft and vandalism, Walker says.“This is money that could have been put

to better use to either upgrade these facili-ties or provide additional facilities in areaswhere there are limited or no sport and rec-reation facilities,” she says.“Now, more than ever, we need our com-

munities to work with us and take owner-ship of their recreational spaces. We urgeresidents to report any suspicious behav-iour immediately.”V Report incidents anonymously on the toll-freenumber 0800 225 669.
