The matter was reported to the provincial police and the four officers were arrested three days after the incident. In an interview with TygerBurger this week the complainant denied any involve- ment in gang activity, describing himself as an honest car salesman. Asked about the incident where police so- lilcited a bribe the individual, who did not want to be named, said it was the third time police had visited his flat in Kuils River wit- hout a valid search warrant. He said the poli- ce had also taken large sums of money from him in the past. The most recent incident on Sunday 27 April, according to him, was also reported to the Kuils River police, as he had done on previous occassions. Caught on CCTV “I was not home, but my wife phoned me to say that the police are at the house again. “I drove to the police station to report the matter but they said they cannot do any- thing about it,” the complainant said. He said after arriving at his flat he was ap- proached by an officer he’d met before. “He first asked me for R1 000.” “I went to the room and returned with only R250, but explained to him that I only have R800, which they took,” he said. The incident was recorded on CCTV came- ras situated inside as well as outside the flats. According to the complainant, a copy of the recording, was handed over to a detecti- ve of the provincial police. “He informed me that the four police offi- cers have now indicated they will resign. That means nothing will happen to the ca- se,” the complainant said. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana, confirmed in a state- ment that four police officers had been arre- sted for allegedly soliciting and accepting a bribe.. The officers are from various units, inclu- ding the Airport police, the Public Order Po- licing Unit and Tactical Response Team. Tik “The suspects claimed to have searched the house of the complainant and recovered tik on a runner at the outlet. “It is alleged that they then signalled to the complainant to pay them a sum of R1 000 to avoid being arrested. The actions of the members were recorded on the CCTV came- ras installed on the premises. “Eventually the complainant was only able to give them a sum of R800 and they left the house without arresting the person,” Ki- nana said. He said the police investigation positively identified the four suspects on the video foo- tage. As a result, the Western Cape police management has taken decisive action against the four for their alleged involve- ment in corrupt activities as well as the mi- suse of state vehicles. Kinana said the four police officers were arrested during the early hours of Wednes- day 30 April and have already appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court.
