Cody Kayster (12) from Kuils River was knocked off hisbicyclebyacarwhile cyclingwithhis friends lastSatur-day.

He was cycling down Amandel Road with his four friendsand turned towards the pavement when a car sped up frombehind him. The right side of the car hit Cody and he fellfrom his bicycle.

The driver stopped after driving over Cody’s leg, lookedat him and immediately drove to the Kuils River Police Sta-tion where the man reported the incident.

“We are very upset that the man did not stay with Codyto check that he was okay or phoned an ambulance. We feelthat he should have showed some remorse and responsibili-ty for what he did and stayed on the scene,” said Faryl Kay-ster, Cody’s mother.

A woman who was on the scene when the incident hap-pened, phoned an ambulance and Cody was taken to hospi-tal. One of his friends went to the Kayster’s home to tell Farylthat Cody had been in an accident.

“I went to the hospital with him and my husband wentto the police station to report the incident. That is how wefound out that the man had been to the police,” said Kayster.

According to Kayster, the doctors say Cody will have tostay in hospital for three to six months. “He broke his tibiaand they fitted a highly specialised titanium instrument tohis leg which has to be adjusted every week to force the boneback into position,” said Kayster. He will also need monthsof physiotherapy but doctors say he will eventually be ableto use his leg again.

“Cody is an active child and this was his last year of prima-ry school. He will miss out on a lot of things, but God willmake him strong,” said Kayster.

The Kaysters are upset that police did not go to the sceneof the accident and they feel the police have not followedthe correct procedures in dealing with the case. “There issomething sinister going on. Certain things written in thepolice docket are not the same as what really happened,”alleges Kayster.

According to Captain Isaac van Niekerk, the Kuils Riverpolice communications officer, they are aware of the claimsmade by the Kaysters and they are investigating these.

“The driver of the car was at the station and he did givethe necessary information. A docket has been opened andinvestigations are under way,” said Van Niekerk.

The Kaysters have made a case against the driver of thecar. “If he had taken responsibility we would not have madea case against him. Parents and motorists should stay alertand keep the safety of children in mind,” said Kayster.

Not everyone is prepared to takethe onslaught when TygerBurg-er informs their readers about avaluable idea for “giving respon-sibly”.

Last week, TygerBurger reportedon a food voucher programmewhere Pick n Pay customers canbuy food vouchers to give to home-

less people instead of giving money.The article states that the vouch-

ers cost R20 per pack of four R5vouchers which can be redeemedagainst purchases of food and otherapproved basic products at anyPick n Pay outlet countrywide.They cannot be be used to obtaincigarettes, alcohol or narcoticssuch as glue or thinners.

TygerBurger reader JohnWhaits, wanted to do his bit and

went to Pick n Pay in Tygervalley.At first the assistants at the infor-

mation desk did not know about theproject. Luckily a senior employeeoverheard them and could assist, hetold TygerBurger.

“She informed me that they hadonly quantities of five R10 vouchersat R50 per pack. I purchased a pack,but upon opening the pack at home,I found that the vouchers expiredon 31.12.2010. I intend returning the

vouchers, but ... I wonder howmany people have decided to givethis scheme a miss due to hitchessuch as the above!”

In a very prompt response, CarolDale Kuys, financial manager of theBroccoli Project, tells TygerBurgerthat the R50 booklets were from thefirst print-run of vouchers. “I wasreally under the impression that allof the older R50 booklets hadworked through the system.

“The expiry date on the vouchersis not applicable. We had to put itthere for legal reasons, but they donot ‘expire’ as Broccoli Project willalways honour the vouchers. Wecommunicated this to all Pick n Paystores”

Research has shown that those who vandalise municipal propertyare youths between 14 and 20 and everybody’s help is needed toroot out this problem.

Alderman James Vos, chairman of Subcouncil 3 said on Thurs-day 22 March that repair and replacement of the signs is extremelycostly.

“I recentlyundertookan inspectionof all the road signsandotherimportant signage applicable to pedestrian safety and was shockedat the defacement,” Vos said.

This followed a number of incidents reported to his office duringthe course of the month.

“This degrades the environment, creates theperception thatmat-ters are out of control and as a result the values of homes and busi-nesses deteriorate.”

He called on parents, teachers, youth leaders and the youth toassist the city in this regard.

He said he was convinced that this was nothing other than van-dalism.

“Council cannot solve this social problem in isolation,” he said.He said damaging municipal property is a serious criminal of-

fence and that matters were worsened by people stealing the signsfor scrap metal. Vos urged people to phone the police or Metro Po-lice with information.

Die Kuilsrivier-polisie is op soek na enige in-ligting wat sal help om die liggaam van ’nvrou van sowat 60 jaar, wat verlede Vrydagom 09:30 by die River Park-woonstelblok inEerstelaan gevind is, te identifiseer.

Daar word vermoed dat sy haar eie lewegeneem het deur by die vyfde verdieping uit

te spring. “Ons het haar sandale op die vyfdeverdieping gekry waar dit in ’n posisie gelêhet wat lyk asof sy dit uitgetrek het voordatsy sou spring,” sê kaptein Isaac van Niekerk,kommunikasiebeampte vir die Kuilsrivier-polisie.

Volgens Van Niekerk is die vrou onbekend

aan ander inwoners van die River Park-woonstelblok. Die vrou het blou jeans en ’nblou hemp aangehad.

The Kuils River Community Police Fo-rum (CPF) together with other organisa-tions will be hosting a Night Vigil onThursday, 5 April.

The aim of the Night Vigil is to createawareness around safety during the Easterweekend. “We will be walking down Van Rie-beeck Road with candles and placards as areminder for the community to keep theirsafety and the safety of others in mind overthe holiday period,” says Claude Julius,project co-ordinator for the CPF.

The CPF plans to implement a number ofprojects this year to create awarenessaround the most urgent issues highlighted ina recent survey in Kuils River. “We ask othercommunity organisations to join hands withus by informing us of the projects they wishto host so we can assist them in following thecorrect procedures,” says Julius.

Members of the CPF will be wearing hatsmade from red plastic cups and they ask thateveryone who wishes to join the march wearred, white or black clothing. “The hats drawattention and we will wear them to createawareness around the issues we need to dealwith,” says Charlene Fourie, CPF public re-lations officer.

Participants will walk along the pavementfrom Shoprite at 18:00 towards Spar. “We askthat the whole Kuils River community joinus in spreading the message of peace andsafety,” says Fourie.

The Social Welfare Task Team ofthe Old Apostolic Church, High-bury Congregation, held a Child

Safety Awareness Campaign lastSaturday.

“The aim of this campaign is toinform children on how to ensuretheir own safety and to empower

and protect them against possibleharm, injury or social ill to whichthey may be exposed on a daily ba-sis in our neighbourhoods,” saidPriest Kevin van Rooy, custodian ofthe task team.

During a planning conferenceheld in 2011, the task team identi-fied that children were among themost vulnerable groups in High-bury and it was decided that an ef-fort would be made to create aware-ness around child safety.

Dan Plato, the Minister for Com-munity Safety in the Western Cape,started the day’s proceedings bytalking to children about their safe-ty and the dangers they should lookout for. “The most important thingyou must remember is to talk toyour parents when you feel some-thing is wrong. Let someone knowwhen you think you are in danger,”said Plato.

Judith Oliver from Missing Chil-dren South Africa talked about theprocedures they go through when a

child is reported missing. She alsogave the children advice around en-suring their safety. The Fire andRescue Services as well as the Met-ro Police Dog Unit held demonstra-

tions for the children.“The safety of our children is

very important and I hope this cam-paign will help us keep them safe,”said Van Rooy.

Vrywilligers van die Matie-gemeen-skapsdiens (MGD) kan hulself op dieskouer klop vir die diens wat hulle aandie Kalkfontein-gemeenskap lewer.

Omdat Kalkfontein nie ’n daghospitaal hetnie, is die nood vir hierdie kliniek baie groot.“Ons is bevoorreg dat die MGD gekies het om

Kalkfontein te help. Die gemeenskap het pri-mêre gesondheidsorg nodig,” sê Allan vanNiekerk, adjunkhoof van die LaerskoolKalkfontein.

Volgens organiseerders van die MGDwaar mediese studente hul dienste gratisaanbied, is Kalkfontein ’n gunsteling omdatdie gemeenskap so goed saamwerk. Besoe-kers aan die kliniek word eers deur vrywilli-gers van die gemeenskap gehelp om ’n nom-

mer te kry om hul plek in die ryaan te dui. Op dié manier ver-loop die proses vlot en word elk-een gehelp in die volgorde wathulle daar opdaag.

Junior mediese studente on-dersoek pasiënte en verwys hul-le dan na senior mediese studen-te wat uit dieetkundiges, ar-beidsterapeute en fisioterapeutebestaan. Twee gekwalifiseerdedokters is ook aan diens omvoorskrifte aan pasiënte te geeen ook om verwysingsbriewe teskryf indien pasiënte verderesorg nodig het. Pasiënte ontvangook gratis medikasie wat deur ’ngekontrakteerde apteker uitge-reik word. Die apteker se salarisword uit MGD se geld verhaal.

“Dit verg baie werk om hier-die kliniek elke maand te hou enons waardeer rêrig die hulp uitdie gemeenskap baie,” sê Ash-win Roman, voorsitter van dieMGD. Organiseerders van dieMGD wil ook dankie sê aan Al-lan van Niekerk vir die gebruikvan hul skoolsaal en Avril Wha-te, die programbestuurder vandie primêre gesondheidsorgpro-jek.

. Die aandkliniek word eenkeer ’n maand tussen 18:00 en21:00 by die Laerskool Kalkfon-tein se skoolsaal gehou.

Die Kaapse Filharmoniese Orkes hetDinsdag 20 Maart die kinders van Alta duToit-Skool in Kuilsrivier met hul klassie-ke musiek vermaak.

Die leerlinge het kort uittreksels van be-kende musiekstukke soos Swan Lake en dieNutcracker van Tchaikovsky geniet en vandie leerders het ook die kans gekry om dieorkes self te dirigeer.

Met ’n beleid om klassieke musiek aankinders bekend te stel en om hulle op te voed

oor verskillende musiekinstrumente, toerdie orkes reg oor die Kaap.

Die Kaapse Filharmoniese Orkes, een vanSuid-Afrika se drie voltydse orkeste, iswaarskynlik die veelsydigste en aktiefste or-kes in Afrika en staan bekend as “die orkesvir alle seisoene”. Robin Carlisle, the minister oftransport and public works inthe Western Cape last weeksaid he wants Metrorail “to ad-just its planned fare increasefrom the totally unacceptable27 percent planned for 1 April,to a single digit figure.”

Although there had been no in-creases in fares from 2003 and2010, Metrorail’s planned 27 per-cent increase for this year addedto 2011’s 33 percent increase,means there would be an effective60 percent rise in fares in just two

years.“This increase is totally unac-

ceptable for the following rea-sons, which I have discussed withMetrorail’s Western Cape region-al manager Mthura Swartz,” theminister said.

These include the continuingextremely poor service of Metro-rail.

“Instead of these huge ad hocincreases there should be a smallincrease each year, not greaterthan the inflation rate.”

He furthermore stated that 1April is too soon for an increase

to be implementedbecause it doesnot give commuters time to plantheir finances.

“It appears that Metrorail’sbudgeting took into account theprojected electricity tariff in-crease of 25,9 percent for2012/2013, which has since beenadjusted to 16 percent. Their actu-al costs will therefore be lowerthan expected and Metrorailshould have adjusted their in-crease accordingly.

“It appears that there is no endin sight to the indignities inflict-ed on Metrorail customers ... ”

Gebedsdag vir kinders

The Order of St John, priory for South Africawill be hosting the annual National EmergencyCare (Basic) competition on Saturday (31March).

This competition is known as the Craig Troe-berg Shield and has been formulated to fosteradvancement in emergency care in terms ofcontinual development and training.

Sadly, we live in a world where deskjockeys have taken over the media land-scape. It’s so much easier to simply “copyand paste” than to go out there and get thereal story. Part of our job is to sift throughthese “spin” stories, separate the wheatfrom the chaff.

The Metro Police are excellent in send-ing out press releases of recent successes.The one that landed in Monday’s inboxwas about them having arrested 34 peopleover the weekend for a myriad of offences,including drug possession and drunk driv-ing.

They’re doing their job, that’s for sure.And then they get flak from the public.Flak for making them late, for inconven-iencing them. The same people enjoy liv-ing in relative peace, hoping the police areout there doing their job.

It’s time to make a mindshift and givethe Metro Police the credit they deserve.So next time you get stopped at a road-block, adjust your attitude while you wait.

Die treine het soos die treine in Indië gelykas gevolg van te veel mense. Woensdag hetons ongeveer 20 minute op Goodwood-stasiegesit in ’n trein na nêrens. Die afkondigingswas so swak dat niemand binne die trein konhoor dat die trein nie verder gaan ry nie.

So twee weke gelede op pad stad toe, woudie deure by elke tweede stasie nie oopmaaknie. Nodeloos om te sê, moes die mense maar

by ’n volgende stasie afklim, en weer wag vir’n trein terug na die vorige stasie. Almal isdus laat vir werk.

Hierdie is maar wat ek ervaar het terwylek stad toe moes gaan vir ’n kursus. Wat vanmense wat jaar in en uit sulke ervaringsmoet deurmaak?

Why are traffic officers issuing trafficfines to Joe Public during morning peakhours? The slow traffic flow is horrendouson Fairtrees Road, especially where itcrosses with Eversdal Road in Durban-ville.

Yet on more than four occasions I havenoticed how traffic officers park their ve-hicles “illegally” (on island at traffic lightas well as on the verge of Fairtrees Roadwhere it links up with De Bron Road),blocking the free flow of traffic.

Then they pull over “suspicious” driv-ers and cars, who now also have to parkon the verge, further disrupting traffic.

A couple of years ago a Good Samaritanreceived a hefty fine, when he stopped ata similar spot to offer me a lift, because,according to the cop, it was illegal to stopon the verge of the road where part of thevehicle protrudes on the yellow line or isa danger to other road users.

Needless to say I paid half of the fine.Why should it be right for them to park

where they want to, though there is no ap-parent accident or emergency, but itwould be wrong for others?

Why can’t they do something to im-prove the traffic flow and not further frus-trate road uses already stuck in traffic?

Who benefits from their actions? Is itnot their duty to serve and not irritate?

traffic services: The City of Cape Town’straffic officers issue traffic fines to offend-ers at all times of the day, irrespective ofwhether it is peak hour or not, as motoristsdon’t only commit violations in off-peak pe-riods. Traffic officers can and will stop andor park their vehicle at any place where itis safe to do so in order to execute their du-ties. However, they must ensure that theydo not cause more of an obstruction whendoing so. We do find, on occasions, that atsome locations there is likely to be a nomi-nal amount of obstruction caused. But,then it is necessary to do so and the neces-sary precautions will be taken. All road us-ers at all hours benefit from traffic services– for example if a taxi driver is charged forinconsiderate driving he receives the pun-ishment suited for the violation. The motor-ists and pedestrians whose lives ‘was orcould have’ been in danger are protected.

The next Adopt-a-Pet event by Paws fora Cause will be held on Saturday 31March and Sunday 1 April from 10:00 to13:00 at the Cape Garden Centre in Joos-tenberg Vlakte.

Paws for a Cause in Cape Town is an ani-mal relocation programme which is based inthe northern suburbs.

Adoption days are presented throughoutthe year on the first Saturday and Sundayof every month.

Paws for a Cause wants to raise funds forUitsig Animal Rescue and would like to handthem R10 000 by the end of next month.

“We are currently standing on R5 000,”said Alischa Cijter, project co-ordinator.

“They are in a critical stage with food sup-plies running extremely low!

“They are a wonderful organisation withmore than 300 dogs, 180 cats, potbelly pigs,horses, goats and even reindeer that theyrescued over the years. They are a non-killorganisation so food and shelter is a hugepriority for them,” Cijter said.

“We want to take a load off their shouldersso theywill be able to feedall theirwonderfulfurries,” she said.

Any other donations are needed, such asblankets, cat litter, food, de-wormer, de-tickshampoo, collars and leads, toys and treats.

People can also drop donations off at the

offices at Cape Garden Centre throughoutthe week. Volunteers are also sought to helpwith the animals on the day.

The Snap Centre for autistic children inVierlanden, Durbanville, is hosting aprestigious gala dinner and charity auc-tion on Thursday 12 April at 18:00 at theOrange Hotel in Cape Town.

This black tie event is presented to raiseawareness and funds to sponsor more chil-dren in their programme.

The occurrence of this development dis-order has increased by 500 percent over thepast five years and currently one out of eve-ry 110 children in South Africa is affectedby this neurological disorder, according toSnap spokesperson, Esmé Brink.

“Early intervention is essential. Re-search has shown that early interventioncan result in as many as 48 percent of diag-nosed children being mainstreamed intoregular schools, which has a great socio-economic impact.

“It has been calculated that it costs a fami-ly approximately R3 million to raise a childon the autism spectrum in their lifetime, astreatments are specialised and very expen-sive.

“However, if early intervention is re-ceived the cost comes down to R1 million.

“With the escalation of autism in thiscountry, we could face a dire economic cri-sis if these children do not receive assist-ance and specialised intervention,” Brinksaid.

“If you consider the numbers of childrencurrently going untreated, this could poten-tially have a disastrous spill-over effect onthe country’s labour force both in terms ofadults not capable of functioning within theworkplace or families that have to carry thehuge financial burden to accommodatethese children.

“The far-reaching implications of thisdisorder can be an enormous drain onSouth African human resources unless thepublic and private sectors join hands tofight this situation,” said Brink.

The gala dinner is presented in April asit is the month the world turns its attentionto the far-reaching effects of autism by cele-brating World Autism Month.

TV presenter Michael Mol will be themaster of ceremonies at the gala dinner.

Hake is a rich source of protein andit is also low in fat – the perfect foodto form part of a healthy diet. Justopen a pack of frozen hake, a tin oftomato puree and a container of or-ange juice … and add the rest of theingredients from your grocery cup-board. Best of all, you can keep thepickled fish in the fridge for severaldays. Usually vinegar is used in pick-led fish, but in this Moroccan recipethe acid required to preserve the fishcomes from the orange juice and thetomato puree.

This recipe is heart-friendly,wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-freeand egg-free.

1 x 450g packfrozen hake me-dallions or 1 x500 g pack fro-zen hake steaks

15ml (1 tbsp)olive or sun-flower oil

1 large onion,sliced

1 mediumyellow, red ororange pepper,coarselychopped

10ml (2 tsp) freshly crushed garlic7,5ml – 10ml (1½ tsp – 2 tsp) medi-

um curry powder5ml (1 tsp) ground cumin (jeera)125ml (½ cup) raisins1 x 410g can tomato puree125ml (½ cup) water375ml (1½ cups) pure orange juice

(use 100% pure fruit juice, no sugaradded)

10ml (2 tsp) white sugarsalt and milled black pepper to

tastefresh coriander (dhania) to gar-

nishlemon or lime wedges to servetoasted slivered almonds to gar-

nishPoach the frozen fish. Drain and

cool. Break into large chunks and re-move any small bones. Set aside.

Heat the oil in a pot. Sauté onionand pepper. Remove from the heat.Stir in garlic, curry powder, cuminand raisins. Stir for a few seconds.Add tomato puree, water, orangejuice and sugar. Return to heat.Bring to the boil, reduce the heat andsimmer uncovered for 6 to 7 minutes.Remove from heat. Gently stir in thecooked fish. Season with salt andblack pepper. Allow to cool complete-ly. Transfer to a non-metal container(a 2F plastic ice-cream containerworks very well). Cover and storeovernight in the fridge for the fla-vours to develop.

Serve cold or at room temperaturewith lemon or lime wedges. Garnishwith fresh coriander (dhania) and, ifpreferred, sprinkle with toasted al-mond slivers (see tip below). If youarenot allergic or intolerant towheator gluten, you can serve it with cous-cous or wholewheat or rye bread.

The fish will keep in the fridge for3 days. Serves 5.Tip: To toast slivered almonds,

place almonds in a dry pot or fryingpan and heat over medium heat, stir-ring often. Remove almonds from potor pan as soon as they start to turngolden brown.

Bodybuilding in South Africa isentering a new and exciting era.

With the establishment of Body-building South Africa (BBSA), thatis affiliated to the InternationalFederation of Bodybuilding (IFBB),local bodybuilders can now get na-tional colours and BBSA can nowapply for funding from govern-ment.

Kevin Schwartz from Bellville isthe new Western Province chair-man, and a mammoth task awaitshim to take bodybuilding to thenext level.

“I’m very excited about the futureof bodybuilding, not only in theWesternProvincebut inSouthAfri-ca as a whole. We are in the processof applying for funds which will be

used for development, judges’courses and seminars.

“One of our main areas we will fo-cus on is development. I have decid-ed to appoint Nelson Benjamin asour head of development,” saidSchwartz.

Benjamin, who is known as thegodfather of bodybuilding, hashelped numerous athletes to reachtheir goals. One of the country’smost well-known and professionalathletes, Marius Dohne, regardsBenjamin as one of the biggest in-fluences in his career thus far.

Schwartz, who has been a keenbodybuilding spectator for 10 years,knows the sport and knows whatthe athletes go through in prepar-ing for a show.

“My wife, Bernadine, has maderemarkable progress in a shorttime, winning local titles.

“She had the honour of winninga world title,” says Schwartz.

It takes hard work and dedica-tion, believes Schwartz. “Gettingup early to do cardio and strict dietsmake this one of the toughest sportsout there. It’s my job to look afterthe athletes and touch base withthem from time to time. It’s also im-portant to have seminars with themso that they know exactly what thejudges are looking for. It’s going tobe a exciting year.”

There are 181 countries affiliatedto the IFBB and the number is grow-ing. There are also over a thousandcompetitions each year worldwide.

The first competition of the yearin Cape Town will be the BBSA-IF-BB Cape Classic on 21 April atParow High School followed by theMuscle Mania on 23 June and theWP champs on 25 August.

Tiere sweet vir titel teen verbete Brakke

The Shameen Classic is makingwaves on the local bodybuildingscene boasting the highest prizemoney and prizes ever – in excessof R400 000 for Saturday’s show.

The Bellville Campus SportsHall at CPUT will be the venue.

Well-known professional body-builder Lee Priest was the guestposer at last year’s show, whichwas attended by 4 000 spectators.

The new Shameen Classic showis now part of a private collectionof shows which are hosted byElixir.

Elixir will be hosting seven fit-ness weekends in 2013. Each fit-ness weekend will consist of abrand new MMA amateur grandprix knockout series, Musclema-nia fitness grands prix from Ve-gas, bodybuilding grands prix, athree-day Crossfit challenge,powerlifting and strongman se-ries and lots more.

All the 2013 shows, as well asthe Shameen Classic for 2012, arenot affiliated to any bodybuildingfederation. For the athletes thismeans the show is open to every

athlete from any federation to en-ter the show.

Apart from all the male body-builders and fitness girls onstage, the Shameen Classic willalso boast three huge bikini girlline-ups. More than 50 girls ingreat shape are expected to enter-tain the crowd.

Confirmation of around 150athletes entering promises tomake this show one to remember.

Weigh-in is from 12:00 to 14:00with the main show starting at15:00.
