The police and enforcement agencies
from the City of Cape Town came un-
der attack this past weekend after
breaking up an illegal drag race gath-
ering in Eerste River.
According to the City, supporters of
the drag racing event turned on the po-
lice and enforcement agencies while
they were conducting an integrated
operation on Sunday afternoon.
JP Smith, Mayco member for safety
and security, says officers swooped on
the illegal drag racing event at a noto-
rious hotspot in the area and found
about 2 000 spectators and 100vehicles.
A total of 26 suspects were arrested
for drunken driving, and five others
for various offences including mali-
cious damage to property and riotous
behaviour when spectators started
stoning the traffic services tow truck.
Smith said 30vehicleswere suspend-
ed, 315 fines issued including 54 for un-
licensed drivers, 35 for unlicensedmo-
tor vehicles and 172 for speeding.
The absolute disregard for the law
is simply astonishing. Attacks on our
staff as well as the police are becoming
far too commonplace. I am very con-
cerned about the type of mentality we
are encountering during many of our
enforcement operations. The public is
quick to point fingers, yet when offi-
cers do act, we see the type of response
we did on Sunday, Smith said.

TRAFFIC WOES: RESIDENTS SEEK RELIEF
Bridge to blame
RICHARD ROBERTS
@richardjohn_rj
W
hen will Saxdowns Road be open for
traffic?
This is the question on the lips of
many Kuils River residents seeking relief
from the heavy traffic congestion current-
ly plaguing motorists in the area.
Should the part of Saxdowns Road be-
tween Langverwacht and Bottelary Road
eventually open, it will help alleviate con-
gestion on two of the main routes currently
carrying the bulk of the traffic Van Rie-
beeck and Amandel roads.
The matter regarding the date of comple-
tion once again came under the spotlight at
a meeting held recently.
Many motorists have to sit in traffic for
hours daily and the issue pops up at many
community meetings where answers are
sought.
The construction of a bridge across the
Bottelary River seems to be the only thing
standingbetweenmotorists anda stress-free
peak hour.
Thebridge isunder constructionand is set
to be completed by July or mid-August if
all goes according to plan, said Brett Her-
ron, Mayco member for transport.
He said construction at the bridge has not
stopped, as previously stated by a Rouxville
resident.
The road has been constructed up to the
bridge on both sides and the bridge over the
Bottelary River is still under construction.
Once the deck of the bridge has been com-
pleted, the construction of the road can be
completed. The plan is to open the road by
the end of July ormid-August, Herron said.
He highlighted that it must be noted that
these are provisional time frames, depend-
ing on unforeseen challenges or bad weath-
er.The initial provisional date of completion
of the road was 31 December 2015.
The project is being funded by a develop-
er by means of development contributions
that become due to the City as development
takes place, Herron said.
He said the City and the developer entered
into an agreement whereby Saxdowns Road
gets constructed.
In this instance the development contri-
butions are paid in advance and the project
relies on the cash flow of the developer.
He explained that the appointment of the
bridge contractor was delayed due to cir-
cumstances beyond the developers control.
Despite this initial delay, the project is
currently progressing well, Herron added.
The estimated final cost for the road being
built by West Coast Civils and bridge being
built by Empa Structures, is R36.5m.

Kuils River residents have
long been wanting Sax

to motorists. The project is
set to be completed by the
end of August, depending
on several factors, says the

T
he City of Cape Town and the Western
Province Motor Club have teamed up
for aweekly event at theKillarney race
track, aimed at curbing illegal street racing.
According to a statement, the Robot Rac-
ing event allows car enthusiasts to race
against each other on a track instead of the
street.
The start of the race is signalled by a traf-
fic light turning fromred to green, hence the
name Robot Racing, and the first driver
crossing the line wins.
All cars undergo a basic safety check be-
fore being permitted onto the track to re-
duce the possibility of incidents involving
the drivers.
The pilot event was held in December,
with the weekly events kicking off in mid-
March.
TheCitys R450 000 contribution split be-
tween the safety and security and tourism,
events and economic development directo-
rates is for a six-month trial.
Maycomember for safety and security, JP
Smith, says in the past they have received
feedback that people resort to illegal street
races because there are too few events at
Killarney.
So the City has literally put its money
where its mouth is by funding these events
and taking the frequency from monthly to
weekly. Its taken awhile to secure the fund-
ing that I alluded to a year ago, but the City
has come to the party and I hope that racing
enthusiasts will join us and stay off the
streets.
According to theWestern ProvinceMotor
Club, race participation is free, but there is
a gate fee of R50. This, together with the
Citys contribution, covers the cost of em-
ploying marshals, security and safety offi-
cials as well as ensuring the presence of
medical staff.
A portion of the Citys contribution will
also be used to cover the cost of erecting
noise abatement structures to minimise
any disturbance to local residents.
These structures have been designed by
and will be erected under the guidance of
the acoustic engineering consultants con-
tracted to theWesternProvinceMotorClub.
A portion will also be utilised to promote
these events and road safety in general via
the well known radio personality Ready D.
We welcome this joint initiative and the
Citys tangible support, says the executive
manager at Killarney International Race-
way, Des Easom.
Killarney is an international multi-pur-
pose event venue with ever growing popu-
larity among racing participants, enthusi-
asts and families, and we are committed to
track and road safety for all users motor-
ists, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestri-
ans,he says.
At Killarney we offer all the excitement
and competition of street racing, but under
safe conditions andas apleasant event expe-
rience.
Plan to end illegal car racing
A new weekly street racing event will be held at Killarney in an attempt to curb illegal racing.
Are you a bigDavidHasselhoff or Baywatch
fan, or ever just wanted to try your hand at
lifesaving?
Well, now is your big chance.
The City of Cape Town issued a statement
recently inviting each and every one who
is keen on trying lifesaving to apply for tem-
porary lifeguard positions at swimming
pools.
The City says although summer is still
somemonths away, its sport and recreation
department had to ensure that its amenities
are ready in time.
Emphasis is placed on safety at all 35 mu-
nicipal swimming pools that need to have
a sufficient number of qualified and compe-
tent lifeguards on duty, they say.
The City says more than 200 temporary
lifeguard positions are available at its pub-
lic swimming pools for the upcoming sum-
mer season.
Suitably qualified individuals may apply
for appointment on a non permanent, sea-
sonal contract basis for the positions of sen-
ior municipal pool lifeguard and municipal
pool lifeguard.
The City says applicants are also invited
to attend free supervised, preseason fitness
training at its Blue Downs and Long Street
swimming pools thatwill be available every
Wednesday and Friday afternoons between
14:00 and 16:00 until 3 June this year.
The peak summer season is the busiest
timeof theyear forus,with thousands flock-
ing to our swimming pools to cool off.
Swimming pools reached a peak of more
than 1million bathers during this past peak
period, making it one of the busiest seasons
inadecadedue to the extremelyhotweather
experienced. We therefore need to have a
team of well trained and competent life-
guards on duty at our amenities to ensure
the safety of our patrons.
Residentswhomeet the criteria for a life-
guard position are encouraged to apply tim-
eously so as not to lose out on this tempo-
rary employment opportunity, says Belin-
da Walker, mayoral committee member for
community services and special projects.
The main swimming pool season com-
mences in October and runs until April
2017. TheCity says the lifeguard application
process is rigorous and requires further
training and testing for the prospective can-
didates. Each lifeguard has to meet require-
ments in line with the qualifying standards
put in place by Lifesaving South Africa, the
City says.
Senior municipal pool lifeguards must
have a grade 10 certificate, a valid lifeguard
certificate would be an advantage, they
should have the ability to meet the require-
ments according to the qualifying standard
as per the lifesaving SA certificate, and at
least 24 months relevant experience.
Proven supervisory experience would al-
so be an advantage.
Candidates should be physically fit and
able-bodied, have a clear criminal record
and no criminal cases pending outcome or
awaiting trial. Printed application forms
are available at the district offices, and ap-
plications close on Friday, 6 May.
V For more details contact 021 444 0421 (Table
View) and 021 444 7646 (Bellville).

Titles nothing new for Zo: Zo, the Chinchilla original long haired cat of Von
Schreuder from Kenridge, was the top cat in the adult category at the combined cat
championship categories of four cat clubs in the hall of the Dutch Reformed Church in
Durbanville last Saturday. With a full name of VonCherie St Zo, titles are nothing new
to this 10monthold feline. She has previously won the junior champion and double
kitten champion titles. Her proud owner is a member of the Cat Association of South
Africa. It was a historic cat championship as it was the first in which a cat club affiliated
with the SA Cat Council combined with three independent cat clubs. PHOTO: ANDR BAKKES

esidents in Highbury and Highbury
Park might still have to endure heavy
traffic congestion for quite some time,
but those who use New Nooiensfontein
Drive and the Stellenbosch Arterial to exit
the area might have some relief in 2018.
Speaking at a communitymeeting held in
Highbury earlier this month, John van
Rheede, chairperson of the NGO Highbury
Foundation, said several plans are in the
pipeline to help alleviate the traffic prob-
lem, but it might still take some time.
We had a meeting with the City of Cape
Town last year. Our concern, as most of you
would agree, isNewNooiensfonteinDrive.
We asked why they could not widen
Nooiensfontein as they have sufficient land
to make a dual carriage road which will
make it easier for people to get in and out
of the area ... [but] they did not buy into
that, Van Rheede said.
He said theCity indicated theywould look
into the matter; perhaps make some
changes. But these are cosmetic changes,
as in the case of a slipway they arewidening
near Belhar, Van Rheede added.
Van Rheede explained some of the future
plans regarding roads in the Kuils River ar-
ea, as outlined by the department of roads
and stormwater.
He said three areas have been identified
by the City for road upgrades and construc-
tion. They are Kommetjie, Bloubergstrand
and Kuils River.
Some of the future changes for the Kuils
River area include the Belhar Main Road
which will be linked to Stellendale, he said.
Another is Erica Drive in Belhar which
will be linked to Belhar Road via a bridge.
VanRheede said the plans for the projects
will commence between 2016/2017 to be
completed by 2019/2020.
The extension of Saxdowns Road from
Sunbird Park north towards the Stellen-
bosch Arterial is also on the cards, he said.
It is believed that Van Riebeeck Road will
also be widened.
This is the information we have on the
future, Van Rheede said.
However, it appears that your traffic
problems will only be resolved in 2018.
Traffic troubles to continue

Die skuiling huisvesmeer as 100 volwasse-
net tydelik.
n ander heenkome, is Sanna Ferreira (60).
werk. Sy het n drankprobleem ontwikkel en
dinge was nooit weer dieselfde nie. Ek het
met iemand baklei en die persoon aange-
rand.
Sanna woon al agt jaar by die skuiling.
My blyplek is eintlik Willowmore, maar
ek weet nie of daar nog enigeen vanmymen-

aan ho bloeddruk.
Twee susters, Rolene Plaatjies (28) en Ca-
rin Adendorf (25), is die laaste twee vroue
gebrand. Ons het by familie gebly, maar hul-
le het moeg geraak vir ons. Ons is nou twee

saam is. As hulle ons uitsit, weet ek nie
waarheen ons sal gaan nie, s Rolene.
Die stigter, Geneva (67), s sy is ookmoede-
loos.
agt pleegkinders as haar eie aangeneem.
land. Shaun is verstandelik gestremd nadat
hy as vyfjarige met n baksteen teen die kop
raakgegooi is, vertel Geneva.
Die jongste kind by

wo home-made guns and a toy gun are
among the items confiscated by the po-
lice in the Blue Downs policing pre-
cinct during the past week.
According to police spokesperson Cap-
tainNomathembaMuavhaa total of six fire-
arms were confiscated.
One of the firearms was a Magnum cali-
bre revolverwith six roundsof ammunition
found in the same vicinity where an off-du-
ty police officer was shot dead on Friday
night in Thubelitsha, Delft, Muavha said.
She said a 23-year-old man was searched
following the incident and the firearm was
found in his possession.
Another firearm was confiscated in
Kleinvlei on the samenight this time from
a suspect who was involved in a suspected
hijacking in Forest Heights, Eerste River.
The police got the description of the sus-
pects from the victim. The information led
to the successful arrest of one of the sus-
pects in Tuscany Glen with a firearm in his
possession, Muavha said. The 21-year-old
male suspect is from Khayelitsha.
Muavha said onWednesday during a spe-
cial operation, whereby a search warrant
was executed at a house in Extension 6 in
Mfuleni, police found a Norinco firearm
with eight rounds of ammunition.
A 38-year-old man was arrested.
This arrest was executed two streets
away fromwhere the policewere busyhold-
ing an imbizo with the community to
strengthen relations with the residents and
encourage them to participate in fighting
crime, Muavha said.
All three suspects have been charged
with the possession of unlicensed firearms.
The remainder of the firearms were con-
fiscated across the cluster which include
the Mfuleni, Kuils River, Kleinvlei, Delft,

S
estien aspirantskrywers het tweeweke
gelede n skrywerslypskool in Brac-
kenfell bygewoon.
is lekker!) ontvang. Die skrywers kon ook
vanhul eiewerkvoorlees in die storiefeesge-
deelte van die program.
Volgens eenvandie aspirantskrywerswat
die slypskool bygewoon het, Corrie Laub-
scher, het die volgende wenke uitgestaan:
. Jou storie moet deeglik nagevors en uit-
eengesit wees. Maak notas hoe mense praat
en gebruik dit in jou storie. Streekdialekte
van Afrikaans is net so belangrik soos sui-
wer Afrikaans by sekere karakters. Dit gee
sprankel en andersheid.
. Emosie speel altyd n groot rol. Dit ver-
oorsaak konflik of samewerking, n reaksie
of teenreaksie. Skets helder prentjies in die
leser se brein van hoe jou karakters lyk. Jou
hoof-, by- en blitskarakters moet almal ver-
skillend wees en jou hoofkarakters moet
diepte kry. Beskryf hulle eers op afsonderli-
ke karaktersbladsye vir jouself. Jou karak-
ters moet jou leser oortuigend meesleur en
dit kom net met skryfoefening. Streef
na die verrassingsfaktor!
. In verhale verdwyn die skrywer agter
sy of haar karakters en raak onbelangrik.
Uitgewers beoordeel jou net opwat voor hul-
le is.
del later as n bonus.
. Saampublikasie deur beginnerskry-
wers word aanbeveel. Moenie tou opgooi as
werk teruggestuur word nie. Werk net har-
der. Maak jou probleme uitdagings.
as 30 nuwe skrywers en digters bevat.
wer in Suid-Afrika. Meer as 100 skrywers en
digters oor die hele SA is reeds betrokke.

EVERYDAY TYRES
RICHARD ROBERTS
@richardjohn_rj
A
plan to prevent municipal refuse bins
from being stolen is currently under-
way and almost near completion by
the City of Cape Town.
The plan entails equipping all 240 litre
wheelie bins with an electronic identifica-
tion tag this waymaking it easier tomoni-
tor service delivery and to recover stolen in-
frastructure, the City says.
The tags will allow the City to monitor
each bin serviced and to identify bins that
are lost, stolen or illegally serviced.
Every now and then municipal refuse
bins are stolen fromhomes, sometimesused
by the culprits to hide their stolen items.
Each week Kuils River residents are en-
couraged not to place their bins outside the
night before collection day, due to criminal
elements scratching in it.
Recently during a meeting, ward 11 coun-
cillor Jacob Jacobs explained to neighbour-
hoodwatchmembers and residents the pur-
pose of the electronic tags, encouraging
those in attendance not to remove it.
The tag is only there to help identify the
owner, and to prevent it from being stolen,
Jacobs said.
So far most of the Citys refuse bins have
been equipped with the tag.
Last week Ernest Sonnenberg, Mayco
member for utility services, confirmed it.
Sonnenberg said the process of tagging
bins involves teams, on refuse removal day,
walking public streets and tagging bins
placed outside for collection.
During this process each tagged bin is
manually scanned and data transmitted to
a back-office where the bin is geo-coded to
a specific property.
For various reasons, not all bins are
available to be tagged on collection day, and
thus repeat visits are required, Sonnen-
berg said.
To date, more than 90% of all properties
have been linked to at least one bin.
Sonnenberg further explained the teams
will be on the ground until at least June this
year.
At which time the number of properties
still unlinked to a tagged bin will be as-
sessed and this information used to deter-
mine what method will be best to register
remaining bins.
In a statement issued in November 2014
the City said the tagging system could help
save the municipality millions of rands an-
nually.
The City services in excess 800 000 wheel-
ie bins each week.
Tags on bins should
help prevent theft

Midwifery is still very much alive and well
and even has its own commemorative day.
The International Day of the Midwife was
declared by the World Health Organisation
and will be celebrated around the globe on
5 May, with Stellenbosch University mid-
wifery students following suit.
They will be hosting a symposium on
Tuesday 3 May in celebration of the day, to
recognise all hardworking midwives and to
bring awareness to maternal mental health
and wellbeing.
The class has invited provincial minister
of health Nomafrench Mbombo to share the
day with them, as it also marks the celebra-
tion of the 60th birthday of the universitys
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
and the 100th birthday of the Mowbray Ma-
ternity Hospital.
The event will be hosted at the Education
Building at the universitys Tygerberg cam-
pus and sponsors are welcome.

Di ryers trap vir doel
D
aar is n spesiale groepie fietsryers
met n interessante naamwat hulle be-
ywer om te trap vir n doel in die Ty-
gerberg-omgewing.
Indien lesers wonder oor hul naam: Ma-
mils staan vir Middle-aged Men in Lycra,
en die groep ryers kom gewoonlik Saterdag-
oggende by die Majik Forest-park byeen, s
Deon.
Die groep het ontstaan toe n klompie
middeljarige mans van die plaaslike kerk
agtergekom het dat hulle dieselfde passie
deel, vertel hy.
on.
dens ritte as gevolg vanmeganiese probleme
of onfiksheid nie.
kom, groet gerus of gaan ry saammet hulle.

ie man wat daarvan aangekla word
dat hy altesaam agt minderjarige
seuns van Eersterivier en Kleinvlei
seksueel aangerand en verkrag het, het
verledeweekweer indieBlueDowns-land-
droshof verskyn.
Die 48-jarige verdagte, wie se identiteit
nog nie bekendgemaak is nie, staar 18
klagte in die gesig. Dit sluit in seksuele
aanranding, verkragting en seksuele uit-
buiting.
Die seuns het glo soms by die man se
huis inForestVillage oornag,waarhyhul-
le aangerand het. Die meeste slagoffers,
tussen 8 en 13 jaar, is anaal gepenetreer,
het die hof tydens n vroere verskyning
gehoor.
hofsaak verlede Woensdag bygewoon. Die
saak was op die hofrol vir nborgtogaan-
soek. Dis egter vir n vierde keer teenge-
staan.
Onder die organisasies teenwoordig
WoensdagwasdieCommunityWomenAc-
tion en die Kleinvlei-groep, Oog op die
Kind n organisasie bemoeidmet kinder-
beskerming. Die ouers van die kinders
woon nie die hofsaak by nie.
Adv. Shameema Lakay, regsverteen-
opgetrek is teen haar klint se vrylating.

10 TYGERBURGER Kuilsrivier Woensdag, 27 April 2016HOOFARTIKELBLAD
Two sides to
every story;
only one truth
There are always two sides to every
story.
Theres the side we see, and then
theres the side we shouldnt.
In a world of capitalism and corpora-
tions, one has to wonder how much of
the information we consume is being
force-fed to us and how much is truly
objective reporting.
In the US, for example, a number of
independent broadcasters have been
gaining momentum with the help of the
internet.
With no influence
from advertisers
(or the presidential
candidates they
support), the
stories they report
on and how they
report on them, are
vastly different
from mainstream
broadcasters.
It was BBC
executive John
Reith who first
outlined the role of
journalists as to
educate, inform and entertain. Education
and information are the two most valua-
ble commodities of the modern age, yet,
very often, we are too busy looking for
entertainment to pay attention to these
elements.
More importantly, as early as 1787,
print journalism is often referred to as
The Fourth Estate, which, in a nut-
shell, refers to a political or social force
that isnt always officially recognised.
The medias role in changing the world
for the better in the past is undeniable.
Here, for example, photographers like
Sam Nzima showed the rest of the world
the reality of Apartheid South Africa,
even when the government was blocking
these images from the local press.
A look at the history books shows that
governmental impact on the media is not
uncommon, often with disastrous effects.
The Nazis ruled their people with the
help of Joseph Goebbels and his propa-
ganda while a string of American presi-
dents tried to control how their citizens
got their news about the Vietnam War.
The only difference between the 1940s,
1970s and now, is the shift of power. As
capitalism started to steadily rise in
popularity and influence after the Second
World War, the business sector slowly
gained more power over the people who
should have been governing them.
A colleague once pointed out that every
news story should be measured by who
stands to benefit most from it. The news
looks a little different when you start
considering it with this question in mind.

navorsingsentrum, die Centre
of Development and Enterprise
(CDE), het in Januarie
gerapporteer oor The real cost
of compliance: The impact of
South African regulatory
requirements on independent
schools. Hulle bevind onder
meer dat die private skoolsek-
tor hopeloos oorgereguleer is
en veel hor eise aan private
skole gestel word as aan
staatskole; en dat die koste van
die rompslomp om n private

onmoontlik maak om klein

Hulle bereken byvoorbeeld
dat die werklike koste om n
private skool te registreer
tussen R270 000 en R290 000

die skool. Dit vreet hulpbronne

celebrated their second annual
Thales bursary awards evening
last week.
The event was held at the Port-
side building on Cape Towns
Foreshore on Tuesday 19 April.
The schools participating and
who received their bursary
awards include the high schools
Kleinvlei, Forest Heights and
Malibu in Blue Downs along
with the high schools Khanyol-
wethu, Joe Slovo and Sizimisele.
The Community Chest sup-
ports an education focused
project to assist disadvantaged
students from a selection of Cape
Town schools. This year six pu-
pils each received R100 000 to-
wards their tertiary education in
maths, science and technology.
The Fast Tracking Pathways
to Success project, in associa-
tion with Thales South Africa
Systems, sees R8.5 million in-
vested into education over five
years in six schools to improve
education in communities
where Thaless advanced Rail
Signalling System is being sup-
plied. The carefully designed
programme, in its second year,
not only benefits the bursary
winners, but also many other
students due to improved man-
agement of these institutions.
Community Chests project co-
ordinator, Yumna Martin, says
they are, primarily, investing in
the future of the youth.
We want to invest in students
who work hard academically,
andwehelp to provide themwith
the opportunity to access terti-
ary education. With Thales, we
are helping to give back to com-
munities by investing in these
six schools over five years, says
Martin. Students are often left
to their own devices in terms of
education. With these program-
mes we are able to really invest
in their future and give them op-
portunities to grow. It speaks to
communities to be able to sup-
port and mentor the youth.
Ethyn Arrow, from Malibu
High School, is a first year com-
puter science student at the Uni-
versity of the Western Cape and
plans to continue there until he
has completed his honours.
After that, he wants to ex-
plore the world the United
States and Europe to broaden
his horizons before embarking
on a career in computer science.
The bursary makes every-
thing easier and more realistic
and it lightens the burden onmy
parents, says Arrow.

ed from Kleinvlei High School

tion to choose to further my edu-
cation, says Arendse.
Hazelle Booysen attended For-
est Heights High School before
going to Northlink Technical

gineering, a field that has inter-
ested her since she watched her

W
at beteken dit om God se kind

Dt is die ondertoon vanpas-
toor Lodewyk Spies van Sonstraal se nuwe
boek: Bid s vir n wonderwerk.
Lodewyk het die 40-dag-gebedsuitdaging
in rekordtyd geskryf nadat hy n uitdaging
van Carpe Diem Media ontvang het.
Toe hymet sy debuutwerk begin het, het
Lodewyk geweet dat hy sy idees doeltref-
fend moes kommunikeer.
blaaieperdagoor n tydperkvan40daekan
lees.
Ek dink daars genoeg voorbeelde uit
die Bybel oor waar 40 dae vandaan kom,
s Lodewyk.
Vroeg in boek
Sommervroeg indieboekword lesers ge-
bedsinfrastruktuur.
Een van my gunsteling-onderwerpe
waaroor ek praat is WhatsApp-gebedsket-
tings hoor God jou oor jy baie is, of hoor
Hy jou omdat jy glo?
Uiteindelikmoet jy genoeg selfvertroue
h om te s: As ek regtig glo Hys my pa,
moedigheid is nie. n Mens moet volgens
hom dieselfde verhouding met God h as
vraag: Het my gebede ten doel om God se
soos dobbel is endatmenseniekonsekwen-
spreek.
Hy sal bietjie verder oor die boek uitbrei
wannneer hy op Saterdag 30 April n Bid
anders, leef anders-slypskool by DAria in
Durbanville aanbied.
Die oggend begin 08:30 vir 09:00 en Lode-
wyk s hy gaan deur die loop van die og-
gend van die boek se kernbegrippe be-
spreek en mense aanmoedig om deur die
uitdaging te werk.

T
he annual Slave Route Challenge,
which sees runners taking on a route
that encompasses anarrayof SouthAf-
ricasmost historical sites, has become a fa-
vourite on the calendar of novice and elite
runners alike.
The race, of which Tyger-
Burger is a media sponsor,
takes place on Mothers Day
(Sunday 8 May).
Event spokespersonFatima
Allie is extremely passionate
about this race.
Born in the Bo-Kaap, Allie
was raised in Walmer Estate
and went to school in District
Six. She is a self-professed de-
fendant of the Cape Malays.
When it comes to the Slave
Route Challenge itself, we
look at our ancestors who
came from Indonesia, Java
and Malaysia.
They were the ones who
came with all the skills; they
were the builders. So my an-
cestors were not slaves per s; my ancestors
were exiled from Indonesia to the Cape,
says Allie.
She goes on to say that because the slaves
were forced to work and interact with other
labourers brought to the area, that is how
all the cultures started to mix and that as
a result started to weave the fabric which
meshes South Africas rich history.
If you look around, the oldest standing
building is the Castle of Good Hope. The
Castle of Good Hopewas built by the slaves.
Look at City Hall and the Grand Parade
all of these iconic and old places and struc-
tures in Cape Town were all built by the
slaves.
Then you realise that there are so many
historical sites throughout Cape Town that
people did not even know of, adds Allie.
Besides the historical aspect the race af-
fords itself to, Allie says there is an amazing
atmosphere of togetherness on race day.
It is the spirit of Ubuntu that you feel.
You will see a grandmother who has never
ever walked (in an event) in her entire life.
She is nowwalking the 5kmwith her grand-
children because her daugh-
ter and her husband are go-
ing to be running the 10km
while their teenager is run-
ning the 21km, so this is a
family event.
It is about people coming
together from all walks of
life, all religious denomina-
tions, from Cape Town and
from out of Cape Town, from
the continent and even over-
seas, she says.
Allie reminded those who
still wish to participate in
the 21km race to enter online
no later than Sunday 24
April. She confirmed that
there will still be opportuni-
ties to enter the other three
events (5km fun run/walk, 10km run and
10km big walk) on Sunday 1 May as well as
Friday 6andSaturday 7MayatCapeTowns
City Hall.
Come and explore this whole journey of
the Slave Route Challenge where you run
through the Castle, District Six, and Gar-
dens, through the Bo-Kaap and the Sea
Point area and back onto the Grand Parade
where you can see the beauty of Cape Town.
What other country can you stand on the
Grand Parade and look to see Table Moun-
tain, Devils Peak, and Signal Hill and then
you see Table Bay? Show me another place
that is as perfect as Cape Town, exclaimed
Allie.

Slaves honoured
step by step
The Slave Route Challenge will take runners past various historical sites linked to slavery,
including buildings such as City Hall.
You too can join the fight against racism as
Peoples Post, sister publication of Tyger-
Burger andCycle of Life, host the first Relay
Against Racism next month.
Taking place on Saturday 28 May at the
Green Point Athletics Stadium, the fun
walk will comprise 22 laps of walking
around the Green Point athletics track,
which each lap representing one round for
each year of South Africas democracy.
The key objective of this event is to unite
our people against all forms of racism and
related intolerances. It also encourages peo-
ple to walk and live a healthier life. More
importantly, it is an opportunity for fami-
lies, friends and colleagues to come togeth-
er, have a fun-filled day and send out a pow-
erful message against racism, says Cycle
of Life director, Rozario Brown.
Children can look forward to some face
painting activities, a jumping castle and ex-
citing spot prizes. Adults stand a chance of
winning some amazing spot prizes, includ-
ing a trip for two on the world famous Blue
Train, return flights between Johannes-
burg and the USA and many more.
Organisers would like to encourage par-
ticipants to wear black and white sports
wear on the day.
Wehave invited anumber of highprofile
celebrities to participate in this important
event. This week, we can proudly announce
that well-known Cape Town diva, Salome
Damon, will be playi
