    A

    group of unemployed youth recently

    underwent First-Aid Level 1 training

in a bid to equip themwithmuchneed-

    ed skills.

The training took place over two days and

was conducted at the Disaster Risk Manage-

ment offices in Albert Philander Road in

    Kleinvlei.

The skills, aimed at empowering men and

women, can be used to help them seek and

findemployment after the training, said con-

    venorFranquinPetersen, anassistant disas-

    ter management officer.

    Ten students in first course

Petersen identified the group of unem-

    ployedmenandwomenwith thehelp of local

    ward councillors, he said.

We asked them to identify peoplewho are

literate and unemployed. We then equipped

the people with first-aid skills they can

then afterwards use this experience to help

them findwork, perhaps as safety officers or

    a first-aid officer, he said.

    The training started onTuesday 22March.

We had 10 students who pitched for the

    course.

Wewill hopefully be able to identifymore

and conduct another course later this

    month, Petersen said.

The first group of men and women were

    fromdifferent areasacross subcouncil 21, in-

    cluding Wesbank, Kalkfontein and Mfuleni.

The training first dealt with the theory

around first-aid, followed by a practical ses-

    sion on day two.

Cameron Bayman, instructor, said as part

of the training the group covered the basic

physiology of people and also learn all the

terms they need to know around CPR.

Training to be done every month

We also teach them the principles of first-

aid and why we do it. We do the anatomy of

the human body and also show them the dif-

ferent types of treatment and attacks people

might suffer, like heart attacks, Bayman

    said.

The students were taught how to identify

wounds, then they learned how to treat it.

For the practical component they needed

to learn CPR on both an adult and infant.

Bayman said most of the students had a

    good grasp on the subject.

Based on the marks, one can see they un-

derstand it. They were very inquisitive and

asked a lot of questions. They also wanted

to know how they can further climb the lad-

    der, Bayman said.

Petersen said they would like to do the

    training every month.

At least now they can join the City of

    CapeTowns volunteer corpswhere they can

    gain even more experience.

This training is about sustainability; we

do not want them to lose what they were

    taught here, Petersen said.

Ma van Wesbank rou tans oor die

dood van haar tweelingseun en -dog-

ter wat onlangs in n padongeluk

    oorlede is.

    sywagnogop speurders sodat sydie oorskot

    identifiseer.

    Susan, n geestelike leier.

Altesaam sewe mense is in die voertuig

op die toneel dood. Twee ander is hospitaal

    Wesbank.

Carltonword tans in die brandeenheid by

    die Tygerberg-hospitaal behandel.

Drie van die insittendes was minderjari-

    ges.

BehalweElroy enMaria, was Susan se k-

    tuisdorp.

    Leonwas soos n vaderfiguur virmykin-

ders.

    haarwange rol. Sy onthouhaar kindersmet

    liefde.

Ek het nie woorde nie. Maria wou so

    vier.

Maria was met haar dood met haar besig-

heidstudies aan die Northlik-kollege se Pa-

    row-kampus besig.

    meentelede ondersteun.

    yf Kalkfontein-gesinne moet

    hul huise herbou nadat dit

    verlede week deur n brand

    verwoes is.

    Die brand het verlede Dinsdag

by n houthuis in Elmariestraat in

    Kalkfontein ontstaan en binne mi-

nute versprei.

    kyk.

My niggie het my gebel en ges

ek moet dadelik kom, my plek

    brand.

Teen die tyd toe ek hier aan-

kom, was hier nie n ding meer oor

    nie. Alleswat ek opgebouhet inmy

leeftyd is in een dag net so vernie-

    tig, vertel n emosionele Carol.

    Liezl Moodie, woordvoerder van

die Stad Kaapstad se brand en red-

dingsdienste, s 17 mense is dak-

    loos gelaat.

Hulle is om 13:50 na die toneel

    uitgeroep.

    Altesaam drie brandweerwaens,

    n reddingsvoertuig en n water-

tenkwa is na die toneel gestuur.

Moodie s die oorsaak van die

    brand is nog onbekend.

Daar word egter vermoed dat n

    minderjarige kind daarvoor ver-

    se.

    Daar is verskeie weergawes

    van die storie, s Carol.

Om dinge te vererger, is die oor-

    blywende besittings wat bure gou

genoeg uit Carol se huis kon red,

    deur die loop van Woensdagnag

    deur diewe gesteel.

    My yskas, mikrogolfoond en

    drieplaat-stoof is gesteel.

Carol het 16 jaar in di huis ge-

    woon.

Di ma van vier en die res van

die slagoffers bly sedertdien in die

    plaaslike gemeenskapsaal.

    Boumateriaal, kos en komberse

is reeds deur die Stad Kaapstad se

    rampbestuur-afdeling aan die ge-

    sinne oorhandig iets waarvoor

Carol en haar twee seuns, CJ en Se-

an-Paul, wat die huis met haar ge-

    deel het, baie dankbaar is.

    Die nie-regeringsorganisasie Ba-

disa het ook kos en komberse aan

    die gesinne geskenk.

Ek is dankbaar vir enige hulp,

    s Carol.

    Magdaleen Swanepoel, nog n in-

woner wat haar huis in die brand

    verloor het, beaam dit.

    Di gesin was Woensdagmiddag

    kry, s Magdaleen.

Die gesin sal dalk hul huis totaal

    en al moet herbou.

My man s ons kan dit nie her-

stel nie. Ons sal dit moet platgooi

    en van vooraf begin bou.

Ek is net dankbaar dat niemand

    seergekry het nie. Besittings kan

    mens vervang,maar nie nmens se

    lewe nie, s sy saggies.

oos die opvolg van n goeie

    speurfliek het die drama

    rondom n poging tot moord-

saak laas jaar, die afgelope naweek

    verder afgespeel in die vernielde

    kantoor van n Bellville-speurder.

Nou, vier maande n die poging

    tot moord, soek di polisiekantoor

    selfs dringender na Jackie Sey-

    mour en Sammy Oforbuike, Sey-

mour se krel en sekssmous, op n

    handvol ekstra aanklagte wat nou

    ook huisbraak, diefstal en regsver-

    ydeling insluit.

Sien, Seymour het laas jaar in

November n foto van haarself op

die internet gelaai om klinte na

    haar sekswerkplek by Spanish

Oaks 19 in Oak Glen te nooi.

Een van di klinte, n motor-

    fietsryer, het daar aangekom,

maar met die eerste oogopslag ge-

sien dat di Jackie op die internet-

foto ni die vrouwas wat voor hom

    gestaan het nie.

Hy het toe verseg om van haar

    dienste gebruik temaak,maar Sey-

    mour het aangedring op n R1 000-

    kansellasiefooi.

    Oforbuike is n liggaamsbouer.

Hy en Seymour het die klaer met

n pyp en bofbalkolf geslaan. Hulle

het n deel van sy oor en sy kaak

afgeslaan en sy arm gebreek, ver-

    tel maj. Fienie Nimb, woordvoer-

    neel aangekom, vertel Nimb.

Met die polisie se aankoms is

    Seymour in hegtenis geneem.

    VerledeMaandag het die speur-

der in die saak inligting ontvang

    dat Oforbuike, wat vermoedelik

    die heeltyd in Johannesburg sou

gewees het, wel in Kaapstad is, s

    Nimb.

Oforbuike het ook n bordeel be-

dryf in Parow by die Simondr Vil-

    las-kompleks, maar di is reeds

laas jaar deur die polisie toegesluit

vir sake. Di plek is ook deursoek

    vir die moontlikheid dat Ofor-

    buike moontlik daar

    sou skuil.

    Nadat die speurder

    die inligting ontvang

het, is hy na die woon-

    stel in Oak Glen. Daar

    het hy die verdagte se

    motor gevind. Oforbuike

    het deur n venster ge-

    vlug en oor heinings ge-

    spring en sodoende weg-

    gekom, s Nimb.

    Die speurder het op die

    motor beslag gel en Sey-

    mourhet paniekerig begin

    raak. Met nadere onder-

soek het dit geblyk dat al

    Oforbuike se persoonlike

    dokumente in di motor

    was sy paspoort, identi-

    teitsdokument en selfs sy

    skeipapiere.

    Nimb vertel dat Seymour

    toe begin het met pogings

om di papiere terug te kry.

    Sy is verlede Woensdag

    deur die sekerheidsperso-

neel van die gebou wat ons

    speurtak huisves, opgemerk

waar sy in die gange rond-

dwaal.

kenaar, albei kluise net so gelos.

Daar was slegs sekere goed ver-

    mis: Oforbuike se dokumente, s

Nimb.

    buike.

Ons vra die hulp van die gemeen-

skap om die tweestuks te help op-

spoor en aan te keer. Enigiemand

    met inligting rondom hul bewe-

gings kan die speurder, ao. Shaun

    Jansen, kontak.

Malibu Village residents are warned to be

more vigilant when driving and parking

their vehicles, following a spate of car hi-

    jackings in the area recently.

    Kleinvlei police spokesperson Captain

Florina Muller said an increase in hijack-

ings has been noticed, following several re-

ported such cases at the police station.

The police and the local community polic-

ing forum (CPF) are concerned about the

spate of car hijackings, she said.

The police therefore want to warn peo-

ple, especially those sitting in their vehicles

in front of their houses and in driveways,

aswell as those at shops, to be careful. These

people become easy targets of armed rob-

    bers, she said.

The police urge residents to join or form

    neighbourhood watches and street commit-

    tees in their areas.

Muller said the number of members on

neighbourhood watches in the area is ex-

    tremely low.

Please join us in this community ven-

ture to take back our streets. Together we

can make an impact on the unacceptable

    crime situation, Muller said.

The police arewilling to provide training,

    Muller said.

watch can contact the CPF subforum chairperson,

    estern Cape police are investi-

gating a rape case following the

    alleged attack and sexual assault

of a female patient at the Eerste River

    Hospital recently.

The hospital is located in Humbolt Av-

enue in Palm Park, Eerste River.

It is alleged that a male patient at-

tacked and raped the woman, also a pa-

tient at the facility, on the night of

    Wednesday 16 March.

It is still unclear at what time orwhere

    specifically inside thehospital the attack

    occurred.

    According to an anonymous source

TygerBurger spoke to, the attacker is a

    mental patient.

    OnWednesday lastweekMark van der

    Heever, spokesperson for the Western

Cape Department of Health, said it was

with much regret and empathy that the

incident of a sexual nature which oc-

curred at the Eerste River Hospital was

reported to them. The matter was re-

ported to the police and they are investi-

gating it, Van der Heever said.

    Provincial police spokesperson Lieu-

    tenant-Colonel Andr Traut confirmed

that the police were investigating the

matter which is being dealt with by the

    Family Violence, Child Protection and

Sexual Offences Unit of Kuils River.

    The circumstances surrounding the

alleged rape of a 23-year-old female are

    being investigated, he said.

Van der Heever said the sexually

    abused patient was immediately trans-

    ferred to theKarlBremerRapeCareCen-

tre for the necessary treatment for sexu-

al abuse. The hospital will expand the

visible security and add more security

    guards, he said.

Van der Heever said construction of a

    temporary psychiatry unit, which is

    more purposeful to accommodatemental

health patients, is currently in the plan-

    ning stage.

This years Slave Route Challenge on Sun-

day 8 Maywill seeparticipants run theusual

scenic route through the city while also giv-

ing honour to individual slaves of the Capes

    past.

Each runner will carry one of the 8 000

names of slaves who appear on a column

of memory at the Iziko Slave Lodge in the

    city centre.

This was announced at the launch of this

years edition of the race at the museum last

    week.

Farouk Meyer of Itheko Sport Athletic

Club and organiser for the Slave Route Chal-

lenge explains runners will have a specific

purpose and a special honour in this years

race, referring to the column of memory

    onwhich thenames of 8 000men,womenand

    children are inscribed.

This year, every person who registers

will run on behalf of one of these names on

the column, allowing each runner to honour

a specific personwhowas an important part

    of our countrys past.

Organisers say the Slave Route Challenge

is more than just a race: it is a tribute to the

trials of dispossessed people who contribut-

ed to the early development of Cape Town

and, as a result, South Africa.

The race route takes runners past several

    historically significant landmarks, such as

the Castle of Good Hope, Grand Parade, the

Whipping Post, Old Slave Church, the Iziko

Slave Lodge and the Slave Tree Plaque.

Today the Iziko Slave Lodge is a site of

memory a place of reconciliation andhope.

    The SlaveRouteChallenge provides the run-

ners the opportunity to actively engagewith

this history and beyond the race to explore,

discover, reflect and reconnect with their

roots, says Paul Tichmann, curator of the

    Iziko Slave Lodge.

Meyer says this years raceaims tohonour

individuals and celebrate the collective his-

tory and diversity of both the race entrants

and the people they are remembering.

This takes the race to a whole new level,

and personalises it for each runner, while at

the same time instilling a sense of unity and

meaning something so critical at this point

in time for our country, says Meyer.

The event is presented by Itheko Sport

Athletic Club under the auspices of Western

    Province Athletics.

While there is a minor change in the title

and logo of the race this year, it still forms

part of Metropolitan Lifes mojo series

which celebrates the community, and Met-

ropolitan Life remains the main sponsor.

Since the inaugural race in 2011, the annu-

al Slave Route Challenge has consisted of a

half marathon and a 10km run, as well as a

5km fun run and walk, and a 10km big walk

for those who prefer a more leisurely pace.

The half marathon is scheduled to kick

things off at the starting point in Darling

    Street at 07:00.

This will be followed by the 10km run at

07:15, the 5km fun run and walk at 07:30 and

the 10km big walk at 07:45.

he suspect in the case of a woman

    whose decomposed corpse was found

in Happy Valley recently, has been ar-

    rested.

The body of a female believed to be that

of Sizeka Batala, a mother from the Sophia-

town township near Happy Valley in Black-

heath, was discovered on Monday night, 14

March. She was reported as missing on 26

    February.

Batalas family and friends searched for

her everywhere, but could not find her.

Her former boyfriend was suspected for

her disappearance and murder. Police is-

sued a statement last week requesting the

help of the public in finding the boyfriend,

    identified as Ali Mbiza.

It is alleged that Mbiza contacted the Bat-

ala family to inform them of where their

    daughters body was buried.

Mbiza was arrested on Wednesday 16

    March.

    Mfuleni police spokesperson Captain No-

    mathembaMuavha said he was apprehend-

ed at about 19:00 by the Giyani Police in the

    Limpopo province.

Mbiza is also known as Ngobeni, ac-

cording to his South African identity docu-

    ment.

The investigating officer of the case was

in contact with his informer, who is based

    in Giyani.

An arrest warrant was issued by the

Blue Downs Magistrates Court and the in-

vestigation officer faxed it to the Giyani po-

    lice.

The police in Giyani were informed

when the suspect was at home in Giyani,

and he was arrested, Muavha said.

The 31-year-old suspect faces charges of

murder and has already appeared at the Gi-

    yani Magistrates Court.

He will now be transported to Cape Town

where he will further stand trial.

The murder of Batala is one of several re-

ported to the police over the last two years.

TygerBurger has since reported on the

unsolved murders of three others, includ-

ing that of the 14-year-old Blackheath High

    School learner Nomsa Mosotho.

Mosotho was murdered in April 2014.

Her body was discovered in the bushes

    near Happy Valley.

No arrests have yet been made.

TygerBurger also reported on the deaths

    of Voughan vanWyk, whowasmurdered in

Leeubekkie Street on Sunday 5 July last

year, and Ethan Minnaar who was shot on

21 September 2014 in Makana Crescent.

According to the police, two suspects

were arrested in the case involving Van

Wyk. However, the case was withdrawn

against them as there was no evidence link-

    ing them to the murder.

In the case involving Minnaar no arrests

    have yet been made.

The investigators of both cases are still

busy with the investigations and following

up leads. The community is requested to

    come forward with information should

there be any person that has witnessed ei-

ther one of these incidents, Muavha said.

    Happy Valley

    suspect arrested

Ali Mbiza, Sizeka Batala and her son in happier

    days.

Three people were injured earlier this week

when the vehicle they were travelling in

rolled on the R300 highway near Kuils

    River.

The accident occurred on Monday morn-

    ing, says ER24 spokesperson RusselMeiring.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene

and found the lightmotorvehicle lyingon the

side of the road on its roof.

It is understood that the driver lost con-

trol of the vehicle, causing it to leave the

    road, Meiring say.

On assessment, paramedics found that two

men and a woman sustained moderate inju-

    ries in the collision.

ER24 paramedics treated the patients and

transported them to the Delft Day Hospital

    for further treatment.

The cause of the accident is still being in-

    vestigated, Meiring says.

    Burger se aandag gebring.

Volgens die klaers is die diens so swak

dat die toets vir leerlingbestuurders om

hul lisensie te bekom, vir onbepaalde tye

    vertraag word.

    As bestuursinstrukteur besoek ek ge-

    anoniem wil bly.

    Volgens homstaanhydaagliks ure in die

skole in Brackenfell, volgens hom, kla.

Dinsdagoggend was daar sowat 30 men-

    toets-masjien daar buite werking is.

TygerBurger kon tot dusver nog nie die

inligting bevestig nie, maar met n besoek

    aan die Durbanville-kantoorwas daar baie

    min mense in sig.

Ons wag n uur of langer vir n oogtoets

    en dan weer n uur of twee om te betaal;

het net om voor in die tou te kom. Dis te

uithoudbaar.

nou gedwing omKuilsrivier of elders heen

    te ry.

    Dis onregverdig teenoor die leerlingbe-

    Dis stunning

    asmense hul

    taal bly praat

Ek worry oor die toekoms van Afrikaans.

Die studente op varsity verkies Engels en

Afrikaanse ouers stuur hul kids na

    Engelse skole.

Dis genuine shocking, hoor! Waar gaan

    taal omgaan?

Gelukkig is my kids nog okay.

skoolgaan, Pa. Pietie van langsaan moet

nou Shakespeare Primary toe en hy ken

amper nie die difference tussen yes en

    no nie. Dis sad, n?

so n jong kid so sterk oor sy roots voel.

Dit bly altyd vir my stunning as mense

    nog goeie Afrikaans praat. Recently

    sekere ice cream.

    Die eerste inbeller

    s toe haar Engels

    is nie hot nie, kan

    sy maar Afrikaans

    praat? Die omroe-

    per s dis okay. Sy

    s toe: Die fla-

    vours is raspber-

    ry, chocalate en

    grape. En daar

    wen sy toe wragtie!

    Wys jou net: jy kn

    nog presteer deur

    op Afrikaans aan te

    dring.

ons taal gaan survive of nie. Ek is so erg

    blaf.

Nou die dag stop ek by n padstalletjie

omdat hulle produkte in Afrikaans op die

    plakkaat geskryf is.

Ek was nooit n

my laaitie: Hoor net daar. Hy kon

netsowel ges het pass the ball to me,

maar hy hou by sy taal.

Nee kyk, Afrikaans hardloop darem nog

sterk deur party van ons se veins.

    Klank te hard

    by vertonings

I would like to reply to your

    article, Group of workers too

loud, TB, 23 March. This is

    the worst idiocy and stupidity

I have ever heard of or read.

    I have been involved with

    the Tygerberg Nature Reserve

as a visitor and keen follower

of what they do and what they

    have achieved past and

    present. Recently they received

an award for being the best

    reserve.

    The women and sometimes a

    male or two are volunteers

    who like and appreciate

nature, and would like to make

    a positive contribution to the

environment that we all live in

    and share.

    For those uninformed, these

volunteers do it in all the

    reserves in the Cape.

We now seem to have a

    bunch of decrepit people that

    do nothing but complain. It

seems to me that they sit on

their a** all day with nothing

to do and then think up some

    ludicrous subject to complain

    about. Theyre mutts that do

    nothing but bark all day,

    making more noise than people

    talking.

    Why do these decrepit people

    not shut up and become

    volunteers and do something

    constructive for their commu-

nity? My question is, what do

    Stop complaining

    andhelp at reserve

I have lived in Welgemoed for

15 months and right from the

    beginning we have had someone

climb over our fencing at least

    once a month and sometimes

it seems to be weekly espe-

    cially around full moon.

We had some petty theft of

goods when we first moved in,

when the garden shed was left

    unlocked or a small bedroom

window was left open at night.

    The culprits often leave clues

    of their presence, sometimes it

is a branch broken where it

    shouldnt be.

    Sometimes we hear small

garden pots or the top of a bird

bath being knocked over, but by

the time we get there to check,

    the culprit has already scam-

    pered.

What I can say is that the

    intruder seems to be familiar

with the layout of our property

    and also of our neighbouring

    properties, using our connecting

    fences/walls to enter or exit.

We now never leave a win-

    dow open with anything in

    reach; we never leave our

    laundry or any garden equip-

ment outside in the garden or

    W

hile they are all well-known Cape

Town musicians in their own right,

themembers of TopDog SA are gear-

ing up to play their first festival in front of

their home crowd at the Cape Town Interna-

    tional Jazz Festival this week.

The band made up of Don Vino (saxo-

    phones), Camillo Lombard (keyboards),

    Charlton Daniels (bass), Mornay Hofmees-

ter (drums) and Mark Williams (guitars)

hail from Kuils River, Parow, Brackenfell

    and Belhar.

The musicians were on tour with Tevin

Campbell andpreparing for a showat Johan-

nesburgs Carnival City when Camillo came

up with the idea to start a band.

We were individuals at the time; we used

to work together a lot, but we werent a

unit, Camillo explains. He was also the one

that came up with the name TopDog, even

though Charlton wasnt too impressed with

    it.

I thought it would sound arrogant, but

once they started getting bookings he says

    the name grew on him.

With their combined musical CVs, Top-

Dog SA have every right to be a little arro-

    gant.

    Together for three years

Between working as the principal of the

CapeMusic Institute, Camillo is a sought aft-

er accompanist for legends like JimmyDlud-

lu while Don Vino rates his work on Kirk

Whalums Gospel according to Jazz Chapter

4 albumas one of thehighlights of his career.

Drumming lecturer by day, Mornay has

similarly workedwith big local and interna-

tional names ranging from Judith Sephuma

to Chevelle Franklin. With more than 16 in-

    ternational toursunderhis belt,Marks skill

has seen him play in 14 different countries

while Charltonwas even chosen as amentor

alongside names like Frank Paco for last

    years Artscape Youth Jazz Festival.

TopDog SA have been together for three

years now, originally performing as a tight

backing band for names like Emo and Louk-

maan Adams, Lloyd Cele, Judith Sephuma

and Danny K, but once they started backing

Jonathan Butler they decided to start work-

ing on their own original material.

    We realisedwehadanopportunity to per-

form anywhere in the world with the band,

Camillo says, adding: His smooth SouthAf-

rican sound kind of led us into a direction

    as well.

The band has been hard at work on their

debut album at Fish Hoeks Paris Studios.

Griqua DNA will be out in time for the Jazz

Festival andMornay describes it as a most-

ly instrumental fusion album with ele-

ments of genres from ghoema to funk and

    even a little gospel.

    Their completely independent album also

    features performances by Jonathan Butler

    and Marrion Meadows.

When they arent on stage, the band mem-

bers are all involved in youth development

    through their various training projects.

    Have to pass it on

We have to pass on the baton to the next

generation and provide them with skills,

Mornay says. Weve got to impart what we

know and what helped us in the industry,

    he says.

Wed like to see a better future for the up-

    coming musicians, Camillo adds.

We had our fair share of challenges and

its up to us to rectify those mistakes by im-

    parting the correct knowledge.

Charlton points out that there aremiscon-

ceptions about what the music industry is

about and many say youll never make it

    as a musician.

    Werehere to givebackandprove to them

that what they are saying is not true: there

    are possibilities.

TopDog will be doing just that when they

play on the Basil Manenberg Coetzee stage

    at theCapeTown International JazzFestival

this weekend. They will also be performing

at the festivals free concert at Greenmarket

    Square tonight (Wednesday).

Camillo works on the festival every year,

but says this year is extra special because

instead of backing another artist, the band

will be playing their own original material.

The festival is also a platformwhere inter-

national artists and promotors can see and

hear the band and possibly book them for

    other festivals.

Also, its an honour and a privilege to

play in front of a home crowd; our own peo-

    ple, Mornay says.

shows and upcoming album, visit their Facebook
