reeld patrolleer, het onlangs by-gedra tot ’n drastiese afname ineiendomsverwante misdaadhier, meen owerhede.

Eiendomsverwante misdaadsluit in huisbraak, diefstal vanmotorvoertuie of uit motorvoer-tuie.

Kapt. Isaac van Niekerk,Kuilsrivier-polisiewoordvoer-der, het lede van twee buurtwag-te – die Amandel and SurroundsCrimeWatch en- Soneike-buurt-wagte – geprys vir hul toegewy-de optrede in ’n poging om mis-daad te help bekamp. Dis weensdié aktiewe strukture dat mis-daad hier afneem, meen hy.

Die twee buurtwagte dek sek-tor 3 van Kuilsrivier wat die ge-biede Soneike, Rouxville, Haa-sendal,MikroPark enAmandel-sig insluit.

Goeie werk“Die lede doen baie goeie

Die verbrande lyk wat onlangs in ’n as-drom gevind is, is deur die Kuilsrivier-polisie geïdentifiseer.

Die lyk is dié van die 26-jarige LucianKoopman van Kalkfontein.

Lucian se erg verbrande lyk is op Son-dag 24 Mei deur ’n verbyganger ontdeknaby die voetbrug oor die R300-snelwegwat Kalkfontein met Belhar verbind.

Monsters is geneem van die lyk en nadie staat se forensiese laboratorium ge-

stuur vir ontleding wat gehelp het metdie identifisering, sê kapt. Isaac van Nie-kerk, Kuilsrivier-polisiewoordvoerder.

Volgens hom is daar reeds ’n arresta-sie gemaak in verband met die voorval.

’n Man (24) is in hegtenis geneem, sêVan Niekerk.

“Die oorledene was glo deur sy aanval-ler verdink van diefstal,” sê hy.

Die verdagte het Vrydag 12 Junie in dieBlue Downs-landdroshof verskyn.

Verbrande lyk geïdentifiseer


A heavy military presence recent-ly filled the streets of gang-rid-den Wesbank as authorities

tried to stem the tide of crime in thearea.

The clamp down forms part of the po-lice’s ongoing Operation Fiela, a mul-ti-disciplinary operation led by the po-lice which focuses on fighting gangsand drugs.

The operation in Wesbank took pla-ce on Tuesday 9 June.

The focus of the operation includeddrugs, firearms, stolen goods and ma-ny other crimes trends that are troub-ling the community.

The police in cooperation with theSANDF, traffic departments and me-tro police conducted the operationwhich involved searching of housesand suspicious individuals.

“Reasonable successes” were achie-ved during the operation.

Residents welcomed operationThree suspects were detained on

outstanding warrants of arrests, onefor domestic violence and two for con-tempt of court. Five other suspects,aged between 22 and 41 were arrestedfor the possession of dagga and man-drax. Four dagga cigarettes and threeand a half mandrax tablets were alsoconfiscated, police officials said.

Those arrested appeared in theKuils River Magistrate’s Court.

Major General Thembisile Patekile, ac-ting provincial police commissioner, ex-pressed his thanks for the commitmentshown by all law enforcement agencies onthe day.

The early morning operation was welco-med by several local residents.

Ricardo le Roux, a resident, said he hopesthe police and army searched the correcthouses and persons and suggested the policenot only search the identified suspects, butalso the houses of their family, friends andgirlfriends. “They often hide their weaponselsewhere,” he said.

Le Roux added that he is happy theoperation was conducted in the area,but suggests that more of these be im-plemented. “After this we are probablynot going to see them again. Theyshould spend a few days in the area inorder to eradicate crime,” Le Roux said.

Address issue of corruptionPastor Daan Koopman, a local church

leader, concurred. “There was a calm-ness in the area on that day. The gangswere also careful. There were no shoo-ting incidents on the day, or a lot thispast week,” Koopman said.

Koopman said most communitymembers were glad to see the military.

“These people are trained to handlethese sorts of crimes.

“I would recommend that they do thismore often,” Koopman added.

Edith van Wyk, a community worker,however feel the desired result mightnot have been achieved.

“I do not think it had much of an im-pact.

“They were in the area for a shortwhile, almost an hour, and only visiteda few homes.

“Seeing the military in the area wasexciting for some residents, but forothers it was just a normal stop and se-arch exercise,” Van Wyk said.

She added the police should also ad-dress the issue regarding corrupt policeofficials. “Some of them are on the pay-roll of the drug merchants and often tip-off the druglords before the search.”

The issue, according to her, has beenraised at several community meetings.

The police said information provided bycommunity members is treated with confi-dentiality and communities are urged toprovide information. “We are committed touprooting crime and protecting the commu-nities,” Patekile said in a statement.

Drie gesinne van Spandau in Kleinvlei,Eersterivier is nou afhanklik van diegoedhartigheid van kerke, organisa-

sies, gemeenskapsleiers, hul families envriende nadat ’n brand hul huise heeltemalverwoes het.Drie hout-en-sinkstukture is totaal uitge-

brand en nog twee steenhuise aan die voor-kant van dié strukture is erg beskadig. Netdie mure van die huise staan.Volgens die nooddienste is die brand

moontlik veroorsaak deur iets wat binne-ineen van die huise aan die brand gesteek is.Die voorval vroegDinsdag 9Juniehet alte-

same 13 mense dakloos gelaat.Die brand het glo by ’n wendyhuis in Illo-

vostraat ontstaan. Dit het toe na twee anderwendyhuise en steenhuise in Hidalgostraatdaaragter versprei.Die families en bure het almal water aan-

gedra in ’n poging om die brand te keer. Hulpoging was egter onsuksesvol.Louisa Louw (59), ’n inwoner, en haar drie

seuns moes ná die brand by familielede in-trek.

“My seun het voorberei vir werk daardieoggend en ek het stiltetyd gehad en gebid toeons die gille hoor,” sê Louisa.Albei het uitgehardloop en die vlamme ge-

sien. “Ek het net die Here gevra om ons tehelp,” vertel sy.Sy het al haar besittings verloor. “Al wat

ek kon red, was die televisiestel. Dit en myslaapklere is al wat ek oor het,” sê sy.Haar suster, GeorginaLouw (55), bly langs

haar. Al haar besittings is ook tot niet.Net haar tapyt is oor. Die pikswart mure,

gekraakte dak enmure is iets wat sy en haargesin nou moet herstel.“Ek prys net dieHere almal is ongedeerd,”

OpleidingVan Niekerk het kort ná sy aanstelling

de misdaadvoorkomingsdiens gedoen het.Hy het ook speurwerk gedoen vir vier

jaar voordat hy indiekommunikasie-afde-ling begin werk het.VanNiekerkwerk sedert 2001 inKuilsri-

vier, maar moes ook waarneem as assis-tent-stasiekommissaris by Kleinvlei in2002 – tóé nog ’n satellietkantoor.“Ek beskou dít as een van die hoogte-

punte in my loopbaan.“Ek is lief daarvoor ommet die gemeen-

skap te werk. Dit kan ekmet trots sê,” ver-tel hy.Die uitdagings wat hy moes deurmaak

was straf. “Die kantoor was nie so volledigbeman soos ’n volwaardige kantoor nie.Fisiekwas ons hulpbronne beperk. Dit hetaanleiding gegee tot die hoë misdaadsyferin die gebied.”

Inisiatiewe“Ons kon egter deur middel van ver-

“Destyds toe dek die polisiekantoor ’nveel wyer gebied. In die tyd toe die kantoorgeopen is, het Kuilsrivier die gebiede bedi-en wat strek vanaf hier tot in Kraaifonteinen Brackenfell, tot by die kusgebied Macas-sar, sover as Strand, Somerset-Wes en selfsdele van Stellenbosch,” sê Van Niekerk.

Om die halfeeu te vier word ’n reeks ver-rigtinge nou beplan. “Daardie dag wil onsskole, oud-lede en stasiebevelvoerders uit-nooi, sowel as plaaslike ondernemings, onssusterskantore en wetstoepassers soos diestad se metropolisie, verkeer en brandweer-diens om by ons aan te sluit.”

Die naweek van 16 tot 18 Oktober beplandie polisie om ’n markiestent op te rig oor-kant die kantoor, waar al sy verskillende af-delings uitstallings sal hê.

“Die idee met die uitstalling is om aan diegemeenskap te wys wat ons doen – van dieverskillende komponente soos die menslikehulpbronne-afdeling, slagoffer-ondersteu-ningsprogram en die honde-eenheid, sowelas die speurders,” sê hy.

Die inwoners word uitgenooi om die mar-

kiestent te besoek. “Ons gaan ook die blits-patrollie, die openbare orde-eenheid en be-rede-eenheid hier hê.”

’n Gala-ete word ook as deel van die vie-ring beplan.

“Hiervoor sal ons die ondernemings, pro-vinsiale polisiekommissaris, plaaslike mi-nisters, die premier en raadslede uitnooi,”sê hy.

Die tyd en datums vir dié geleentheidmoet nog vasgestel word. “Ons het ’n komi-tee wat die verrigtinge namens die polisiehanteer in samewerking met die plaaslikegemeenskapspolisiëringsforum.”

Daar word ook gereeld verkope by die po-lisiekantoor gehou om te help om geld in tesamel om die feesvieringe ’n sukses temaak.

The teambehind the#ThatsFunny come-dy shows will be hosting the Stand-up Co-medy Showdown at Meraki in Durbanvillethroughout July.The competition will give 16 aspiring or

up and coming comedians the chance toshine and compete for the main prizewhich includes publicity, and interview onthe #ThatsFunny podcast, a cash prize anda slot alongside some of South Africa’s co-medy heavyweights at #ThatsFunny’s big-gest show to date on Saturday 8 August.“The competition is open to anybody as

long as they can have a five minute set pre-pared on the first round that has not beenstolen from any local or international co-medians,” says competition organiser JoeEmilio. Contestantsmust also reside in thenorthern suburbs.Round one on Saturday 4 July will see all

16 contestants take to the stage with a five-minute set. The audience will then get achance tovote for the comedians they thinkshould go through to the next round. investment projects prioriti-sed by Passenger Rail Agen-cy of South Africa (Prasa)and the City of Cape Town,four projects will be rolledout in the northern suburbs.“Investment in new rail in-

With his freakishly high vocalsand lightning fast guitarskills, Louis “Axe” Lourens

has become a familiar face on theCape Town music scene.

Known to many only as Axe, Louishas been performing around CapeTown on his own and in groups forroughly 17 years now.

Axe describes his latest project Ax-enmore as a proper show band.

He says he always wanted to starta show band, he was simply waitinguntil he’d found the right people tojoin. “The problem was to find theright members that you get alongwith and can trust. They also need tobe good at what they do and profes-sional while they do it”.

Enter local musicians vocalist Tau-na Collier, bassist Rob Stemmet anddrummer Sebastian Guile and he’s fi-nally got his team together.

The group will be presenting “Dads Rock”at Hillcrest Quarry this Sunday, in celebra-tion of Father’s Day.

From shy to a ball of energyAxe and Tauna go way back. The two start-

ed performing together in 2007. While Axehad been in other cover bands before, thiswas Tauna’s first.

Although she’s usually quite shy, Axe saysTauna becomes a ball of energy on stage. Shedyed her hair red shortly after teaming upwith Axe, transforming herself into “Fire”,a stage personality she would go on to keepfor most of her career. Together the duo per-formed as Axe on Fire.

Since then, Tauna has been involved withmany other acts, including Fire n Styx,which saw her performing alongside just adrummer, Sean Nunan. The two were votedCape Town’s best band by the Cape Argusin 2012 and 2013.

Tauna’s voice also saw her become a final-ist in the 2013 Idols competition.

Sebastian’s drumming skills have earnedhim the nickname “The Hitman”. While theprofessional performer can often be seen inproductions on The Barnyard Theatre’sstage, he is as comfortable in a classroom ashe is on stage.

Armed with a BMus Education qualifica-tion from UCT and international teaching

experience, Sebastian founded the HarmonyMusic Foundation last year, which sees himsharing his music knowledge with childrenfrom disadvantaged backgrounds.

Bassist Rob Stemmet is another familiarface to northern suburbs music fans. Withtwo decades of local and international expe-rience, “The Gatekeeper” is the glue thatholds the band together.

When he isn’t playing with Axenmore,Rob is also the bass man for Pebbleman, Bou-levard Blues and Rupert Mellor & the Thun-derbirds and can often be seen performingas a session musician for popular artists atvenues like Die Boer.

Keenan Davidse notched ahat-trick of birdies overthe last four holes at the

Milnerton Links, but it was alltoo little too late as Adrian Ford(Durbanville Golf Club) powe-red to his first IGT Cape winwith a flawless seven-under-par 64 in the Milnerton Clas-sic last Wednesday.

Helped by two eagles andthree birdies, Ford soared to11-under-par 202 and finisheda stroke clear of Davidse (69)and two shots ahead of fellowSunshine Tour professionalJP Strydom (66), also fromDurbanville.

The 28-year-old Ford beganthe final round three shots offthe pace from co-leaders Da-vidse and Drikus Bruyns.

Staying patientAfter an early birdie at the

par-four second, the Durban-ville professional parred hisway to the turn, but an eagle-three at the 10th gave his titlehunt a much-needed injection.

“The front nine was fairlyfrustrating, because the putts

didn’t drop, but a clean card isalways a bonus though. I just stay-

ed patient,” said Ford.“I hit a fairly good drive at the 10th

and had 210 metres left to the pin. I

hit a three-wood to 20 feet and madethe putt for the eagle. At the 14th, Ihit a three-iron off the tee and had110 metres to the pin. I saw the ballclear the bunker in front of thegreen, but I had no idea that I holedout for another eagle until my play-ing partners started yelling.”

With Davidse hitting his stride,Ford knew he needed to make somebirdies.

“I knocked one in at the 16th anddrained another long putt for birdieat the 17th, but I knew that was it forthe round,” he said.

“The 18th is a tough hole and theytucked the pin back left, so your opti-ons are limited. If you hit it a littletoo left, you’re in the water and ifyou hit it long, you face a reallytough chip. I hitmy second just shortof the green, two-putted for par andprayed that Keenan didn’t make bir-die.”

Davidse also closed with par, han-ding ananxiousFordvictory and thewinner’s cheque worth R12 000,sponsored by The House of Machi-nes. Ford co-led with Davidse in theIGT Cape’s inaugural MetropolitanClassic after bothplayers carded 65s,but too many mistakes underminedhis chance of a grandstand finish.Hewas pleased to have a chance tomake amends.

“I amreally thrilled that Iwas ableto play solid golf for three successive

rounds with the minimum mistakesand I have to credit my caddie, Fran-cois Olivier, for some of this suc-cess,” Ford said.

IGT Cape great for amateurs“In every tournament this year on

the Sunshine Tour there has beenone bad round that has cost me dear-ly and I was determined to get itright this week. I had four bogeys inthe first round, just two in the se-cond and none today and that’s agreat feeling.

“Francois and I gelled really welland he kept me nice and patient,whichwas key tomy round. I’m real-ly pleased that we have the IGT Tourin the Western Cape now. It’s nice tohave some events to work on stuffand to keep competitive. It was greatto see a whole bunch of SunshineTour pros competing this week. Itkeeps you on your toes and hungry.

“I think the IGT Cape is great forthe amateurs, too. It gets expensiveto travel to the IGT Tour in Gautengand this gives them the same bene-fits as the amateurs up-country ha-ve. You could see that they really en-joyed the chance to give us somestick and it’s really good on-the-jobtraining for them.”

. The next stop on the IGT Capeschedule is Kuils River Golf Club forthe Kuils River Classic from 22-25June.

The national Spur Schools MTB League is in fullswing around the country with the WesternCape leg kicking off at Meerendal Wine Estate

outside Durbanville on Saturday.Early indications show that the league will quickly

reach its target of 10 000 entries for the 2015 seasonand with four qualifying events on the calendar forlocal riders, mountain bike enthusiasts will give ittheir all in an effort to make it to the finals at BekkerSchool in October. According to league co-ordinator,Meurant Botha of Amarider, the league has sur-passed all expectations in terms of growth, footprintand level of riding since its launch in 2009.

“We’re delighted with the strong contingent of pri-mary schools competing in the league as well as theincreasing number of female cyclists taking to thetrack,” said Botha.

In order to make the league more accessible to rid-ers, the senior (high school) categories have beenmoved to later time slots allowing for those that par-ticipate in mainstream school sports to fulfil theirschool commitments.
