Two families in Bishop Lavis want towarn the public about a new scam rela-ting to landscaping doing the rounds in

the community. What should have been an enhancement

to their homes has turned into an eyesoreand loss of money.

Promises of promotions and deals for fea-turing as a showhouse have turned tonought for these families and there are fearsthat the scamsters may be moving to othersurrounding areas.

In the first case Sylvie Ste-vens was approached andthought that she was gettingthe deal of a lifetime.

“I have always wanted to dosomething about the sand infront of our house,” she says.

“Last week, out of the blueI was visited by a woman cal-ling herself Kimberly whotold me about the landscapingand paving services that theyoffer.

“I originally wanted toknow what it would cost tohave the front section tarredbut then she gave me a storyabout how our facebrick house needed some-thing different.

“She convinced me that because our housewould be used as a “show” house to highlighttheir work, they had a special type of stonethat would match the house. Because thehouse would be used as a showhouse wewould also be getting it at a special pri-ce,”she says.

Stevens was also convinced of their since-

rity when they pointed out that they did notwant a deposit, you paid when they were fi-nished.

“Unfortunately on the day that they cameto do the work I was not home, and my hus-band paid them the R2 500, for what hethought was a job in progress, but they didnot even give him a receipt.

James Johannes also fellfor the same story when thesame people offered to makea difference to his driveway.

“We have cemented ourdriveway and yard, but therewere some holes that neededfilling,” he said.

“These people approachedme with the same story of how

they could enhance it by filling the holes andadding a new product that will make it looklike it has been tarred.

After fleeing Rwanda, AlbertMpazayabo found him-self working as a parking attendant in Cape Town. But he had bigger dreams.Albert now holds a trio a tertiary qualifications:

a degree in Psychology, a postgraduate diploma inHIV/AidsManagement and, most recently, receivedhis Master’s degree.Albert was one of 685 students in the Faculty of

Economic and Management Sciences at Stellen-bosch University (SU) who were awarded their de-grees on 1 April.“He already holds a Postgraduate Diploma in

HIV/AIDS Management from SU, a BPsych degreefrom the University of the Western Cape and he iscurrently doing his Postgraduate Diploma in Moni-toring and Evaluation Methods, also at SU,” MartinViljoen from the university stated. The 51-year-old, who hails from Kigali, was a trai-

ning officer in productive health care for the RedCross in Rwanda, but when the war started in 1990,he had to flee for his life, Martin said.“He ended up at a refugee camp in the DRC and

from there came to South Africa in 1997. Once inSouth Africa, he started working as a security gu-ard, then as a parking attendant at various shoppingcentres in Cape Town.”These days, Albert, a father of three, is in charge

of placing other parking attendants at shopping cen-tres in Brackenfell and Durbanville. While this is not Albert’s ideal job, he struggles

to find employment suited to his education.“It’s tough being a foreigner. I’m legal here, and

I’m allowed to work in South Africa, but unfortuna-tely most jobs are for South African citizens only,”says Albert.“Over the years I have often felt discouraged. I ha-

ve the skills that are needed, but the system does notallow me to be useful or add value to those who arein need. But despite the many setbacks I will nevergive up. As long as I’m still breathing, I have hope.”Albert says he plans on registering with the He-

alth Professional Council of South Africa, then set-ting up a consultancy this year where he can workas a community mental health worker – finally put-ting his BPsych degree to good use.In the meantime he’ll continue with his studies

and next year plans on tackling a PhD in the fieldof Monitoring and Evaluation. “I’ve decided that ifnobody wants to give me a job, I will create workfor myself.” he says.“The fact that I’m not inmymotherland forcesme

to do better.“Here I have no mom or dad or aunt or uncle to

help me out, so you realise quickly that in order tosucceed, you must do things for yourself. And thisis what I’m doing here – pushing myself. My hardwork must also serve as an inspiration to my child-ren.”V The ceremonies are streamed live at www.sun.ac.za/streaming

Family devastated by fire

The Hansen family in Greenlands lost all their possessions when their house wasdestroyed by a fire recently. The Hansens in Plane Street are seen here in the ruinsof their house that was destroyed when an apparent electrical fault caused the fire. While family and friends in the community are trying to assist with food and a placeto stay, they need help rebuilding their lives. Anybody who wants to help them cancontact their neighbour Marita Murray on 071 848 2696. PHOTOS: GARY VAN DYK

The angels of LittleAngels Educare inGreenlands showedthat they caredabout the Hansenfamily by managingto collect someclothing and foodwhich they donatedto the family. MerciaEsterhuizen fromLittle Angels handsover the donations toone of the familymembers in front ofthe shell of theirhome.

“What they initially explained to me wasnotwhat theywere producing. It just lookedlike a type of black oil or paint that they we-re applying and it looked horrible.“When I questioned them about it they

told me that they would spray it with waterand it would get the proper affect. As youcan see it has not happened and now I haveto have this whole area re-done, but this ti-me I am getting a reputable company.”Both families tried calling the number on

the card they were given and were at firstgiven the runaround about coming to redothe work, but then there were no repliesfrom that number.“At first they said they did not know the

people who worked here, and then theystopped answering their phone,” said Jo-hannes.

The two families are planning to take thematter to the small claims court and haveapproached an attorney in this regard.“We want people to be aware of these con

artists, and if there aremore peoplewho ha-

ve had the same experience they must getin contact with us,” concluded Stevens.

V Stevens can be contacted on 021 934 7173 andJohannes on 071 201 4043.

Doelwitte is oordrewe, onrealisties

en selfgesentreerd;. Wil altyd die beste van alles hê;. Ervaar vinnig verwerping;.

ST Potgieter by 021 949 5007 [email protected].

A local bank is taking its services into thecommunity to make banking easier for resi-dents.

Representatives from Capitec Bank visi-ted Nooitgedacht recently to assist resi-dents in opening accounts.

This initiative took place in co-operationwith local ward councillor Nas Abrahamswho approached the bank when he disco-vered the needs of many of the residents inthe area.

“During my work in the area I discoveredthat there were still many people who didnot have a bank account,” he said.

“Sometimes we use people from the com-munity in some of our projects for the city, but we have to pay them into a bank ac-count.

“Many of them just did not have the timeto go to a bank so I approached Capitec toask how they could help and immediatelymade my offices available to them for thisproject.”

Faye Meyer, operations manager for thebank, explained that initiatives like thesewere part of their policy of providing theirlow cost, high interest on savings GlobalOne Bank account to community members.

“Our single solution to money manage-ment assists every South African in theirendeavours to ensure they manage theirmoney well and are rewarded throughmaintaining a positive savings balance.

“We provide their bank cards immediate-ly onsite and the accounts are active imme-diately. Providing this convenient servicesaves our clients the expense of travellingto a bank branch,” she says.V For more information call Meyer on 072 542 3050.

Broadband.com, as well as Son newspaper.According to the tabloid, the 29-year-old

father of two from Epping pleaded guilty onThursday 17 April to ille-gally uploading the gang-ster-themed movie FourCorners onto the internet.Because of Norton, the

movie – which recentlystarted showing in cine-mas locally – was availa-ble to all and sundry sincethe end of last year for aslittle as R5, the tabloidsaid, causing the movie tosuffer huge losses at thebox office.Helen Kuun of Indige-

Commercial Crimes Court on charges of il-legal copying and distribution and was sen-tenced to a three-year suspended sentenceand a R3000 fine, the tabloid said.Norton, an employee at a mechanical

workshop, will be retrenched at the end ofthe month. He said he got the Four CornersCD from a friend who was selling it on a

street corner in Parow.According to Son, he admits to having

uploaded the CD to the internet to sharewith others, and admitted in his plea barga-in that he was naive and ignorant of theconsequences – financial loss to the produ-cers and distributors.Norton helped Giant Film Productions,

the producer, removethe movie from the in-ternet and admitted tofeeling regretful. Heapologised to the produ-cers and the court. The technology news

Fortunately, members of the City’s ExtendedPublic Works Programme were on hand when the fire broke out and helped extinguish itbefore it got out of control and affected the whole block. While noone was injured, thefamily lost most of their beds, appliances, clothing and cooking equipment. The committeeis thus calling on the community to help the family with donations. A Johannesburg attorney is preparingto bring charges of human rights vio-lations and a civil suit against a local

neighbourhood watch member and twoBrackenfell armed response officers afterwhat he describes as a vicious attackagainst him on Good Friday.A keen runner, Jongikhaya Gwe (42), vi-

about 09:00 when he went for a stroll in theneighbourhood.“I was dressed in my running shoes, a

Comrades Marathon jacket and cap as I setoff for my walk. While in Jacaranda Street,a white Tata Bakkie stopped next to me andthe driver, Pieter Le Roux asked me whatIwasdoing there and if Iworked in the area.“I told him I was taking a walk, after whichhe told me I was not allowed to walk in thearea without his permission and that hewanted to see my ID document,” Gwe toldTygerBurger last week.

Suspicious black guy“I told Le Roux that I did not have my ID

document on me and walked away, turninginto Mimosa Street.”At this point a vehicle from Capital Secu-

rity arrived in Mimosa Street, apparentlyafter the armed response was contacted byLe Roux and informed of a “suspiciousblack guy in the area”.Gwesaid thearmedresponseofficer,Con-

rad Smigelaar, approached him and askedhim where he was from.“I explained to him that I was in town for

the run and stayingwithmy sister and gavehim my sister’s address. He then assuredme that everything was fine,” said Gwe.But then, according to Gwe, Le Roux wal-

ked up to them and allegedly told Gwe, thathe was “’n fokken harde gat”, and again de-manded to see his ID.“I told him that the era of apartheid was

long gone and that he did not have the rightto demand my ID document, just for wal-

king down the street,” said Gwe.

RacistLe Roux then allegedly called him a black

racist, upon which Gwe responded by say-ing: “In that case then so are you…”According to the written report Smige-

laar filed after the incident, three other ve-hicles, one from Titanium Security, onefrom Bolt Security and one from SJC Secu-rity then also pulled up next to the men.According to the report, an officer from

Titanium confrontedGwe andwanted to se-arch him.“I asked him on what grounds he wanted

to search me and the next moment he grab-bed my wrist and I pushed him away.”Smigelaar’s report described the events

as follows.“…the armed response officer grabbed

the guy (Gwe) and a fight started betweenthem, whereby they threweachother onmyvehicle and damaged my right side fender. The black guy was hit by the armed respon-se officers of SJC, Titanium as well as theneighbourhoodwatch (member)! I then toldthese guys…that I think the situation wasunder control but they would not listen.”Gwe says he was hit in the face, which

broke his glasses, on the head and on thelegs with a baton, and with a wooden wal-king stick. After Smigelaarmanaged to stop the fight

the men waited for the police next to thestreet, where, according to Gwe the officerfrom Bolt Security kept him safe until thepolice arrived.“After a 45 minute wait, with the police

still not in sight, the officers left andmy sis-ter, who in themeantime arrived at the sce-ne, and I left to go to the police station,” saidGwe.His sisterSiphokazi toldTygerBurger she

was shocked tohearwhat one of the personson the scene told her brother.“As I arrived there, I heard the man tell

Jongikhaya that hewas ‘aMalema’.Mybro-ther looked terrible, he had an injury on hishead and his shirt was torn,” she said.Gwe laid a chareg of assault GBH and Le

could not run a straight line, never mind pave. After more than two weeks,

the paving was done at hisexpense.Seeing that I deliver quality

SLICE OF LIFE

Want wie wil nou eintlik spelers indie Super Vyftien dophou as hulle naregte in die Vodacombeker-kompetisietuishoort?Borge gaan ook binnekort kopsku raak

om by dié sport betrokke te raak. Ver-loorders trek histories nooit grootborgskappe nie.

Our story about the Elsies River man who is using solar and windpower for his household electrical needs (Tygerburger Wednesday 2April) got Belhar Primary interested to find out more on the subject. They invited Todd Lambert to their school and he was only too happyto give the learners some insight into how solar power is making adifference in his life, and the difference it is going to make in theworld’s power needs in future. PHOTOS: GARY VAN DYK

Todd Lambert, right, did more than just a presentation of solar powerat Belhar Primary recently. He will be making a difference in the livesof Mujahied Jafefa, left, and Sesethu Felaphi from the Malawi informalsettlement who will now be able to study at night thanks to a solarpowered light Lambert donated to them. Were it not that an innovative conman pretended to work for Tyger-Burger, his cover would probably

not have been blown. Now he just needs tobe caught.Aman who introduces himself as aTyger-

Burger deliveryman, Ricardo Bester, is col-lectingmoney in Goodwood for hismother’sfuneral. Bester states in an affidavit, signedand stamped by the Parow police station, that his wheelchair bound mother died in afire in Clanwilliam.

Tall storyRichard Smith, aGoodwood resident, says

he believed this story when he heard it thefirst time and made a contribution. Butthreeweeks later hewaspresentedwith ano-ther, similar affidavit by the sameman, alsostamped by the Parow police.Only this time, the mother apparently

died in Oudtshoorn. Bester either lost twowheelchair bound mothers in fires withinthreeweeks indifferent towns, orhewas try-ing his luck. The latter seeming more probable, Smith

this time insisted on a death certificate, upon which Bester started threatening him.Smith then phoned the Parow police and le-arned there are 56 outstanding cases againstRicardo Bester, although the police told him

there could be more than one person by thatname.“A couple of weeks ago one of your delive-

rymen, Cecil Booysen, was collectingmoneyfor two of his colleagues who were killed ina stabbing incident,” says a Parow reader,Laurette Nel. She says he had an affidavitstating the story and people were contribu-ting huge amounts.“Yesterday, he came again. This time he

had an affidavit stating that his mother diedin a fire,” she says. She took pictures of theaffidavit, signed and stamped at the Parowpolice station. This affidavit bears the same handwriting

and street address as the one “Bester” pre-sented to Smith in Goodwood. The addresson top is in both cases Sage Road, Athlone, although on the one it is number 6 and onthe other, number 61.According to Ulrich Steynberg, operati-

onsmanager at On The Dot, the distributioncompany for TygerBurger, there is no em-ployee bearing either of the twonames at thecompany. It could be that this trickster is operating

under other aliases as well, as other readersphoned the paper over the past weeks withsimilar stories. A Parow woman says a manclaiming to be a driver of the TygerBurgerdelivery vehicle has an affidavit of many pa-ges relating the tragic death of his motherand sister in a fire in Oudtshoorn. This affi-

davit was stamped by the Athlone police. The woman says people on the list contribu-ted up to R200 per person. She gave the manR20, and received a swear word in return.

Affidavits worthlessAnother reader fromParowNorth phoned

the paper to say someone with a “letter”tried to engage him in conversation aboutthe driver of the TygerBurger delivery vehi-cle who supposedly stabbed a woman.Steynberg visited the Parow Police to try

find out more. He says the police told himany person can obtain a sworn affidavit.“One writes down your story on a providedform, and all the police have to do is tomakesure that the IDnumbers on theaffidavit andin the applicant’s ID book correspond. Ifthey do, the form gets stamped and signed. No copy is made and the affidavit is also notlogged anywhere.“I asked the police officer how they can

sign an affidavit if there is no ID, and he saidas long as the person writes out the affidavitin front of a police officer, they will also signit. I told him that this is a rather fishy arran-gement, and toldhim that in that case anaffi-davit is worthless. He agreed,” Steynbergsays. He adds thatOnTheDot,TygerBurger and

People’s Post do not support or approve anyform of door-to-door donations, begging orcollection by their employees.

“We normally make a donation from thecompany if there is death in the family of anemployee and they can present a death certi-ficate,” he says. He asks the public to notsupport any begging in the name of any ofthe above companies and that they phonethe police immediately if someone does.GarthHewitt, advertisingmanager forTy-

gerBurger, says the company will never en-dorse begging even if there is a police stampon the form.

The “Your Street” campaing launched bySubcouncil 3 chairperson James Vos ho-pes to get residents actively taking careof their surroundings.“I hope residents will begin to recogni-

se the possibilities and potential of thecommunity’s urban spaces and the otherfeatures their streets haveto offer,” said Vos at the la-test subcouncil meeting.“Take a closer look at yo-

ur street, and then ask yo-urself: What would I havedone?” said Vos.He suggestedoneplace to

start would be to reportblocked drains and storm-water systems before win-ter starts.“We all know that regu-

lar cleaning and clearing ofstormwater drains is a ba-sic service, and an extre-mely important one. Goodnews is that I have recei-ved confirmation from the roads andstormwater department that prior to theonset of the rainy season all systems willbe cleared and cleaned throughout our

wards. All our roads and stormwater gullies

must be cleaned of weeds and litter, andour drain inlets cleared to prevent the po-tentially dangerous situation of floodedroads,” he said.He said inmanycaseshouseholdwaste,

including garden cuttingsand used motor oil contai-ners, are the main reasonsfor blockages in the storm-water system.“The fact of the matter is

that residents also have avital role to play in this re-gard by takingmore care oftheir front verges and gut-ters as this will prevent thegrass and litter from accru-ing in the drains. It is alsoimportant to ask anyonewith a garden service to in-sist that grass cuttings arecollected and taken away, instead of being swept

down the nearest drain,” he said.V Residents are urged to report blocked stormwater systems on 0860 10 30 54 or email water[email protected].

Through his love of horses and hismusi-cal talents, local singer Gerald Clarkhas found a way to help others.

Touched by the work that groups likeEquitots in Durbanville are doing for child-ren with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS),Gerald and retailer Jade&Velvet started theThe FASt Forward Fund last year to financi-ally help organisations working with FASchildren.Their main focus is to afford young FAS

sufferers the chance toworkwithhorses andponies in a therapy environment.FAS is the result ofmothers consuming al-

cohol during pregnancy. Their children of-ten experience physical, behavioural, deve-lopmental and cognitive difficulties. But children receive physical and cogniti-

ve benefits from working with horses. It was seeing these benefits that made Ge-

rald want to get involved.“The one little girl, Abigail, stood out for

me in particular,” he recalls. Abigail wasborn prematurely and it was expected shewouldn’t be able to walk due to FAS.“I was there during a session when she

was put on a horse andwithin a fewminutesI could see her orientating herself and get-ting interested in her surroundings.”Besides physical benefits like improved

balance, posture and muscle tone, workingwithhorses also seemst tohelpwith “attenti-on span, reasoning skills, memory retentionand a host of other cognitive functions”.“The other day I saw her running around,

dancing and laughing,”Gerald says of three-year-old Abigail.“This is a very effective way of helping

these kids develop,” he says.

The FASt Forward Fund works togetherwith the Beyers Truter Foetal Alcohol-Syn-drome and Interrelated Treatment HelpFund (FAITH). FAITH Fund’s main focus isawareness and warning mothers about thedangers of drinking while pregnant.Gerald has roped in friends in to help rai-

se funds for FASt Forward and they will bejoining him on stage at Barnyard Theatre,Willowbridge on Sunday 4 May.Fokofpolisiekar, Valiant Swart, Heinz

Winckler, Theo Crous, Luna Paige, NatashaMeister and Guy Collins will make up theall star lineup which will be held togetherby MC Pietman, who will keep guests enter-tained between acts.Tickets for the show cost R150 and can be

bookedonwww.barnyardtheatre.co.za or bycalling 021 914 8898.

TygerBurger joined hands with the TwitterBlanket Drive (#TBD) to act as a collectionpoint for donations this year. The Twitter Blanket Drive is a uniquely

South African, community-driven responseto the needs of the poor during the wintermonths. The drive started with a single tweet in

2010. Founder, Melanie Minnaar, contem-plating the cold winter ahead, tweeted:“What if each person on Twitter donated ablanket?”. Since then, the #TBD movementhas grown in leaps and bounds. All efforts promoting thenational drive fo-

cus on Twitter. All beneficiary organizati-ons are non-profits registered with the De-partment of Social Development.Collection points and events have been

created across the country, some taking theform of a “Tweetup”, whereby Twitter userstweet about donating their blankets and allenjoy ameal or drink at the collection point,

generally a restaurants or cafe. The Twitter Blanket Drive has injected a

true sense of community into the SouthAfri-can Twittersphere, as Twitter users join into help disadvantaged communities keepwarm during winter. The Twitter Blanket Drive has also expa-

nded to nearby countries, as seen during2012, when a Zimbabwe event was held, withgreat success. There will be “Tweetup” events in Cape

Town, Johannesburg and Durban on Thurs-day 29 May 2014. The main event in CapeTown will be at the Fire & Ice Hotel in theCBD.Northern Suburbs residents can drop

their blankets off at the reception area ofTy-gerBurger’s offices at the Bloemhof Buil-ding, on the corner of Bloemhof and EdwardStreets in Bellville.V For more information, follow the #TwitterBlanketDrive and #TBD2014 hash tags on Twitter.

SAREL BURGER

VerdedigingBellville (voorheenBellville Tech) hetmet

SUPERLIGA: BELLVILLE SKRAAP DEUR TEEN BELHAR

Onreg teen NNK-span

Northern suburbs local KosieWeyers, whois currently hot property on the stock cartrack, is aiming toagainburnup theKillar-ney oval during the exciting V8 races onSaturday. After a magnificent national season last

year that resulted in him crowned SouthAfrican EngenVolkswagen Champion, theflamboyantKosie has decided to remain onhome turf this season and concentrate onwinning the coveted Tygerberg Engine Re-builders big V8 title. It hasn’t been easy. Certainly not when

there are drivers like veteran MartinNeethling, Steven Heydenrych and MarkFontini to contendwith.Fontini inparticu-lar could be the joker in the pack.Despite missing all earlier events, he ra-

ced back to finish second overall lastmonth. On the fairer side, the ladies have caused

an upset by taking over the Andre Groene-waldMotorsMini class for the aspiring yo-ung champions of the future. Here teen-ager Kayla Jones is a narrow three pointsahead of former class leader James Bainand Corne Esterhuizen, with demure Mi-chaela van Tonder not far behind in fourthplace. While other girls in this category include

Abigail Cope and Daniella de Sousa, all ey-es will be on Bain, who is determined toregain the lead on Saturday, in what hasbecome a particularly hard fought champi-onship.

The threat from the women extends tothe senior Mayfair Nationwide Clubmanclass. Here Sandra Erasmus, despite thedistinction of being the first lady driver towin a stock car title, finds herself down in

seventh place after missing two rounds inthe title chase earlier this season. Howe-ver, she is back in action and the champi-onship leader Quintin Saayman will haveto be at his best if he wants to keep her be-

hind him. Other events on the late after-noon programme include races for the Ca-pe Peninsula Panelbeaters 1660 class,McCarthy Toyota 2.1 Modified class andsingle seater Midgets.
