Help the poorbeat the chillGARY VAN DYK

It’s all about compassion as The SouthAfrican National Zakáh Fund (SANZAF)launched it winter warmth project inUitsig last week.

The organisation’s signature seasonalproject, Operation Winter Warmthlaunched nationally at all its offices inSouth Africa, but the excitement wasrunning high at Uitsig Primary who willbenefit from it.

A large majority of children and theaged live in abject poverty in South Afri-ca, hence, their campaign is targeted atunderprivileged children, the aged andthe homeless in need across the country.

In the Western Cape the focus is specif-ically on deserving school children inthe various communities. “Our objec-tive is to provide these deserving schoolchildren with a woolly beanie, scarf andgloves to protect them from the cold,”says Moulanah Moegamat Hassiem,Western Cape chairman of the organisa-tion.

“The aged in our community are alsoparticularly vulnerable to the coldweather. Chances are we all know anaged person who fits the above descrip-tion. Thousands of our aged in countlessinformal settlements and in old age insti-tutions will be afflicted by the severecold winter weather. They have little ornothing to keep them warm.”

In Gauteng the focus will be on theaged and destitute families who will beprovided with a range of winter clothingitems so that they could select the rele-vant items that they need, adopting theIslamic principle of equality, equity anddignity.

Beneficiaries will identify what theyneed from a variety of items.

Similarly offices in KwaZulu-Nataland the Eastern Cape will provide blan-kets, comforters, and winter jackets tocommunities in need.

“Collaboration with like-minded peo-ple and our contributors enables us to ex-

pand our reach and fulfil our mission, providing quality new winter items forchildren and communities in need,” add-edSajidDawray,national chairpersonofSANZAF.

“We work with individuals, corporatedonors, community and faith-basedservice organisations looking to giveback through cause marketing pro-grammes. We also work with manufac-turers and transportation partners whoprovide in-kind support that help uswork so efficiently.

“The project also responds to localcommunities with a powerful, nationaladvantage as it addresses the immediateand critical needs for appropriate cloth-ing during the cold winter months.

“Operation Warm Warmth can be lev-eraged to go beyond warmth, to strength-en relationships between our partnersand their communities and to facilitatepositive outcomes that help break the cy-cle of poverty,” he said

Through this work, Operation WinterWarmth advocates for awareness of theimpact of poverty on families and com-munities, and demonstrates how evenone person can make a positive differ-ence in the life of a person in need.

Some learners at Uitsig Primary get some blankets from Moulanah Moegamat Hassiemwhile principal, Hermanus Mouwers, lends a helping hand.

These youngsters get in line for theirbeanies and gloves to keep them warmthis winter.

Sunray Primary in Delft is growing to “gree-ness” after an Earth Day project at the school.

Townhouse Hotel and Conference Centreonce again joined forces with The Sunray’sIn Flowers project, brainchild of Grade 4 edu-cator Jason Hanslo, which aims to transformthe extreme poverty of the area.

On Monday 22 April, the Trees4Schoolsteam planted beds of vegetables at the school, joining more than one billion people across192 countries in celebrating Earth Day.

In true Earth Day spirit, their mission wasto cultivate all that is good by harnessing thepower of nature and soaking up some goodold fashioned family values while creatinggreener, leafier and healthier environmentsfor children in the area.

The ultimate goal is to inspire children tocelebrate nature by informing, inspiring, in-stilling and learning about the environmentand then taking positive action.

Led by the hotel’s Michelin-trained execu-tive chef Stefan Schmidt from fittinglynamed Trees Restaurant, the team joinedforces with students and educators to dirtytheir hands as they planted 800 seedlings ina veggie planting ceremony.

Speaking about the experience, Schmidtsaid that their team in partnership withTrees4Schools, has a vision to get kids excit-ed about the environment.

“By nurturing budding horticulturists andinstilling a sense of ownership and pride inthe students we want to motivate and empow-er them,” he said.

“Through the veggie planting session weare teaching the children to grow their ownfood, so that the welfare and upkeep of thetrees and veggies will be passed on from gen-eration to generation for continued sustaina-bility and environmental awareness.”

The Sunray’s in Flowers project has al-ready started an indigenous garden at thefront of the school and now plans to plant apermaculture garden that its founder hopeswill not only enrich the area’s poor soil, butalso the minds and ultimately futures of to-morrow’s gardeners.

The hotel will donate R1 on behalf of eachdelegate to its conference centre toTrees4Schools, and encourage their guests tomatch or better this donation.V For more information about Trees4Schools, pleasevisit http://www.trees4schools.org/.

The police were in court recently to supportjustice for a fallen comrade. The Western Cape High Court sentenced

four men to a total of 260 years’ imprison-ment for the murder of an off-duty police of-ficer Det/Const Anele Latile and othercharges linked to the brutal slaying.Latile, who was based at Elsies River

SAPS at the time, was killed in March of2011.This collective sentence, imposed by Act-

ing Judge Nalini Gangen, also related to twoattempted murders of the policeman’sfriends.OnWednesday 17April Xolela LeonMdini

(26), Akhona Sikani (25), Siyabulela Ntsume(50), and Wandile Mthindini (27), were eachsentenced to 65 years’ imprisonment.A fifth accused, Sicelo Mbili, who drove

the hijacked vehicle, was acquitted. However, because several of the sentences

will run concurrently, each of the accusedreceived life and 32 years’ imprisonment. But, their sentences translate into an effec-tive 25 years behind bars before they becomeeligible for parole. The accused were also convicted on 8

April of two counts of aggravated robbery(cellphones), one count of aggravated rob-bery (vehicle hijacking),murder, two countsof attempted murder, one count of being inpossession of unlicensed firearms and an-other count of possession of ammunition.Latile (30), was gunned down in Orange

Street, Thubelitsha, Delft at 21:30 on 30March 2011.The court found that the detective and two

of his friends had stopped, in his red NissanSentra, in front of his girlfriend’s housewhere they were waiting for her. It was thenthat they came under gunfire. In a packed courtroomJudgeGangen said:“The accused, after drinking on the day (of

the crimes) ranout ofmoneyandalcohol latethat evening and decided to go to Delft to ob-tain money from friends.

“Shortly after they reached Delft (on foot)the accused, brandishing firearms robbedthree residents, who were chatting in theroad, of four cellphones.“They fled and fired two shots at residents

who chased after them. They crossed overHindle Road and minutes later shots werefired and a car was seen driving off.”Judge Gangen added that the cellphone

robbery victims ran across the road and sawLatile and his two passengers standing out-side his vehicle. She told the court that the detective, who

died on the scene, had been shot in the face, while his two friends were shot and wound-ed in their stomachs and chests. The car was found abandoned in Brown’s

Farm, Philippi at 03:15 on 31 March 2011.Judge Gangen said that the manner in

which the deceased was shot at close rangeand the way the passengers were shot evenafter they emerged from the vehicle, must beconsidered as aggravating factors.Det/Capt Anna Cillier, investigator at

Delft SAPS commended the efforts of theStateProsecutor to get justice for their fallencomrade.

Turning reading time to funGARY VAN DYK

There was lots of excitement at GreenlandsPrimarySchool inBishopLavis to celebrateWorld Book Day last week. After months of preparation, Living

Through Learning (LTL), a non-govern-mental organisation providing educationalprogrammes to disadvantaged schools inCape Town, opened its eighth CoronationReading Adventure Room (RAR) in theWestern Cape at the school. The opening was held in celebration of

World Book Day, and hallways buzzed withexcitement as learners lined up to get aglimpse of their new room.RAR is a long-term project, which aims

at improving literacy levels among primaryschool learners. Currently there are nineschools that participate in the programme, which reaches over 1 000 Grade 1 learnersacross Cape Town. The special reading room is designed and

implemented by LTL which provides thegames, books, manuals and other resourcesfor each room. This approach enables young children to

learnhow to read andwrite step-by-step andin a manner that is also enjoyable to them.Facilitator Jonelle du Toit said she was

excited about the launch of the room.“We have been working at the school for

a while and did not have our own room.Having a room dedicated to reading willhelp us tremendously and the children arevery excited about this addition.

“We are able to teach and engage with thechildren easier because they are in a re-laxed, comfortable and interactive environ-ment,” she said.Deputy principal, Peter Conradie, said

the school appreciated the efforts of LivingThrough Learning. “We are happy with thelearners’ progress and the facilitators havehelped to motivate them,” he said. The reading room provides the learners

with an opportunity to interact with words, sounds and books. “Like most schools weare struggling financially and would nothave been able to do this by ourselves. Weare excited and grateful for this.”LTL communications director Lindsay

Langenhoven explained that the class-rooms are transformed into a fantasy havenfor learners in which they can read, writeand have fun.“The RAR project is comprehensive and

aligned with the Western Cape EducationDepartment’s (WCED) curriculum forGrade 1 learners. We train educators in ourliteracy methods, provide the materialneeded and our facilitators visit the classeson a weekly basis,” she said.TheRARprogramme is sponsoredbyCor-

onation Fund Managers. In 2012 learnersfrom Hillside Primary School in MitchellsPlain who participated in the RAR projecthad a 100 % pass rate.“The schools we work with have a defi-

nite need.“They are hungry for any practical assist-

ance they can get.”

City welcomes Golden Arrow rulingGoldenArrowBusServices’ application

against MEC for Transport and PublicWorks,RobinCarlisle, and twocompa-

nies operating existing interim MyCiTiservices was recently dismissed with costsin the High Court.

The City of Cape Town roundly welcomedthe judgement in the case, since it threat-ened to halt the further expansion ofMyCiTiservices.

Vision“This is wonderful news for the people of

Cape Town. It means that current negotia-tions for long-term contracts to operate ex-isting MyCiTi routes, as well as those in therest of Phase 1A and Phase 1B, can continueand those contracts can be concluded. Im-portantly, this ruling allows us to imple-ment our vision of affordable and integratedpublic transport for all the residents of Cape

Town,” saidmayoral committeemember fortransport, roads and stormwater, Brett Her-ron.

Golden Arrow Bus Services, which is alsoan operator of existing MyCiTi services inPhase 1A, applied to the court to compel thecity to enter into a mediation and arbitra-tion process around areas of dispute, and toprevent the city from going ahead and nego-tiating and concluding a 12-year contract interms of the National Land Transport Act(NLTA) to operate MyCiTi routes in Phase1A and Phase 1B.

ComplexThe judge said that the process of estab-

lishing an Integrated Public Transport Net-work was “extremely complex”. He foundthat compulsory arbitration and mediationwhere parties could not reach agreementwas “inappropriate”.

“If the city were obliged to reach consen-sus on every issue and with every partici-pant in the process, failing which it could becompelled to go to mediation and arbitra-tion, it could become endlessly boggeddown,” the judge said when handing downhis judgement.

MandateBeing compelled to a process of mediation

and arbitration would make it impossiblefor the city to fulfil its statutorymandate, asrequired by theNLTA, to take steps “as soonas possible” to integrate services into thelarger public transport system.

The judgement said that the relevant sec-tion of the NLTA meant a contracting au-thority, such as the city, was obliged to nego-tiate but was not obliged to agree.

Golden Arrow’s application to compel thecity to negotiate in good faith was also dis-

missed. The judge said that the allegation that the

city did not negotiate in good faith was astrong allegation, which implied fraud ordishonesty.

He found that the city was not obliged bysection 41 of the NLTA to negotiate withGolden Arrow Bus Services about compen-sation for its vehicles and assets whichwould be made redundant by Phase 1A andB. The City has not refused these negotia-tions at all, but the parties have negotiatedto deadlock on these issues. The fact that thecity and Golden Arrow hold different viewscannot justify an inferenceof bad faithorun-reasonableness on the part of the city.

“Wewelcome this judgement. It is good forCape Town and our vision of creating anOp-portunity City by providing affordable andquality public transport,” concluded Her-ron.

Art for Animals, an art exhibition to raisefunds for PETS (Pet Empowerment inTownships) invites the public to their artexibition that started on 26 April and lastsuntil 10 May.

The idea was started by pet lover and en-trepreneur, Marcelle van Zyl, who approa-ched PETS with a fundraising idea whereher current art collection will be exhibitedof which 25 %of all saleswill go to the PETScause.

“I wanted to give back to PETS by givingsome of my art,” Marcelle said.

“I am on the PETSmailing list and am al-ways shocked at the enormous vet bills thatthey have. I am hoping that the sales of thisevent will be able to clear their vet bills sothat they are no longer in debt,” she says.

Marcello believes this debt prevents ani-mals from getting veterinary help whichcannot be helpful for their lives.

The exhibition will be taking place at theBlaauwklippen Vineyards, Wine Centre inStellenbosch.

Various PETS artistswill also exibit theirart pieces.

Members of the community in Belharhave discovered the joys of making can-dles.

A basic candle-making course held atthe Minor Hall was a gender empower-ment project teaching women the skillwith the aims to foster a job creationproject.

Leslie Murray, one of the attendees, said that the participants enjoyed it andmany wanted to take their newly ac-quired skills further.

“It was very informative starting witha lesson on the history of candles and can-dle-making,” she said.

“A full demonstration on candle-mak-ing was given by the trainer and all dele-gates were shown the preparation of all

necessary ingredients, and compositionthereof.

“Candle-making is a lengthy processhaving many detailed steps and each stephas a ‘curing’ time.

“A step by step hands-on lesson wasgiven to the delegates, whereby all dele-gates prepared and made their own can-dle with individual attention given toeach delegate, to ensure understanding ofthe process.”

On the second day of the course candleswere completed and decorated with theparticipants getting advice on how topackage and present their products.

At the end of the course all the partici-pants were given a presentation gift packfull of ingredients to take home and startmaking their own candles.

Certificates were also handed out.

There are two words in theEnglish language which set mysenses on edge like a fingernailscraping on a blackboard andthey are “spokesperson” and“chairperson”.

It seems to me that if awoman speaks on behalf of anentity or is elected to chair anentity, she must figurativelyundergo a bi-lateral mastectomyand a radical hysterectomy torender her genderless. In thecase of a man it is far easier asa couple of snips with thekitchen scissors and the is jobdone.

SA prides itself on genderequality and advancing womenin the workplace so why notgive a woman credit and referto her a “spokeswoman” or“chairwoman”?

My hele lewe lank is Christusmy enigste rolmodel. Mensewat met my verskil, moetbesluit wie hulle s’n is.

The sale of drugs is a call forconcern, particularly in theWestern Cape and South Africa. This in part, has generatedmany questions and quickresponses have been that thoseinvolved want to make quickmoney, as a result of a hugeprofit margin.

Drugs commonly sold inSouth Africa are cocaine, heroin, Ecstasy, marijuana andQuaaludes. Why is it so easy toget a dose of these drugs withrelative ease, in spite of ade-quate security measures thegovernment has put into place. Are these drugs from within orimported? Who is to be blamed, the government? Are the portsof entry this country so vulnera-ble? The law is flexible to thosewho are engaged in this line oftrade. The execution of a SouthAfrican lady who was caughtwith drugs in China was notenough warning to them andmeant nothing to the authority.I am not proposing a deathsentence to drug traders, but

LEWENSKIEKIE

Geweld is vandag heeltemal aanvaar-baar. Dis vermaak-lik. Geweld is cool.

want to make the followingsuggestions;

The court should not grantbail application to suspects whoare involved in drug business.

The sale of drugs goes togeth-er with prostitution. Prostitu-tion should be made completelyillegal.

The community should helpalert Law Enforcement officersabout the premises where drugbusiness is taking place.

If all the drug dealers are sentto jail, our country will becomeless violent. Our children willconcentrate more in school.Money that was spent onbuying drugs will be put forbetter use. Rape, women andchild abuse issues will bereduced. There will be no streetkids. If the above remedies aretaken, South Africa will experi-ence peace.

Above all, policy makers havea greater part to play in orderto save the nation from gettinginto a shambles.

TYGERBURGER | ELSIESRIVIERWoensdag, 1 Mei 2013

SAREL BURGER

SHIHAN HENNIE: HE WILL SUCCEED

Turner backin ring again

Graham Turner will make his comeback after a lengthy layoff in the MMA ring. Here he is sparringwith one of his top students, Shaun de Lange.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Sit down when you read this sentence. At the age of 45, GrahamAshley Turn-er is making a comeback to the MMA

ring and this is a man with his sights setfirmly on an EFC title. It’s been 10 long years since his last fight. After the defence force as a youngster,

Graham started working as a doorman aswell as VIP close-protection security.Through this he was able to learn many

forms of martial arts, but still found some-thing was missing. That something wassoon found after he watched UFC 1 and sawRoyce Gracie submit his opponents thatwere much bigger than him without sus-taining injury to himself. This was Gra-ham’s first introduction to the art of Brazil-ian JiuJitsu.

MMA dojoIn the 90s, Grahamstarted his first school

training in the art of street reality combatin London. He trained up fighters that com-peted for pro-tournaments on the Britishcircuit reaching national level. After that he moved back to South Africa

and followed his dream of opening his ownprofessional MMA dojo den.“At the age of 45, I’m physically andmen-

tally in the shape of my life. I have neverfelt this good. I seemyself as amartial artistnot a fighter. A fighter will stop trainingwhen he stops competing. A true martialartists never stops training even if heknows he’s done competing,” said Graham.

He has a busy schedule to say the least. He is training 16 times a week, with any-thing between two and four classes daily athis Leviathans Den dojo in Durbanville.“A lot of thought has gone into this mas-

sive decision. I’m not done yet, far from it.I really feel my best is still ahead of me. Ithink itwould be arrogant ofme to step intothe EFC ring for my first fight. I need to getthe ring rust off.

Burning desire“That’swhy I decided to compete in a pro-

am fight on 25May in Edgemead. I need thetime in the ring before getting competingin the EFC in November. I have a burningdesire to compete on the highest level andlet me tell you I am ready for it.”He also has a lot of respect forKyokushin-

kan’s Shihan Hennie Bosman. “ShihanHennie opened his doors for me and someof my students two years ago. He broughtme back from being a prized fighter to theroots of a true martial artists.“Training at Shihan Hennie is all about

respect for each other and yourself. The tra-ditional ethics is something very importantto us. Althoughwe are involved in differentstyles, I still see him as my teacher.”“You know I have always had respect for

Graham. His technique and power sur-prised me and let me tell you it takes a lotof guts to get back into the ring at his age.I have no doubt he will make a success ofhis comeback,” said Shihan Hennie.Anybody willing to sponsor Graham can

contact him on 0 071 902 3351.
