Anothermajor housing project is on thecards for Delft.

The Rosendaal human settlementsproject, situated close to Roosendal HighSchool, formally kicked off the first phaseof the Delft integrated housing projectwhichwill lead to the eventual constructionof 2407 subsidised housing units.

“I cannot be happier that we are embark-ing on the construction phases of this mas-sive development,” said the City’s maycomember for Human Settlements, Benedictavan Minnen.

Empowering“It is a true testament of our commitment

to improving the living conditions of ourmore vulnerable residents and empoweringthem to access and to own an asset,” saidvan Minnen.

“The first phase, or theRosendaal project, will comprise two-bedroomed, free-stand-ing and semi-detached single and double-storeyunits. The first 288 beneficiarieshavebeen approved andare about to be contactedso that we can start with their title deed ap-plications,” she said. The large-scale inte-grated project has been split into four pha-ses: Roosendaal, the Hague (Phase 1), Eind-hoven, and the Hague (Phase 2) projects.Construction the last phase of the Delft inte-grated project is expected to commence inthe 2017/2018 financial year.

Strong communitiesThe 288 housing opportunities have been

After meetings between the Western Capeeducation department (WCED), the depart-ment of public works and the local council-lor to address the issue of ValhallaHigh, theschool has been added to the list for sched-uled repairs in the 2015/2016 financial year.

The WCED made this assurance in re-sponse to an article in TygerBurger lastweek about vandalism Valhalla High. TheRuyterwacht neighbourhood watch com-plained that the vandalised classrooms arebeing used by criminal elements.

WCED spokesperson Millicent Mertonsaid in order to protect schools in the prov-ince from burglary and vandalism, theWCED’s Safe Schools directorate has in-creased security at some identified highrisk schools.

“Unfortunately, despite these measures, some of our schools still fall victim to van-

dalism and burglaries. It is important forcommunities to take ownership of theschools in their area and realise they havean important role to play in protecting theircommunity’s assets.

“The co-operation of the community is es-sential in order to combat vandalism andcreate a safe school environment that pro-motes teaching and learning. We urge com-munity members to be extra vigilant and toimmediately report any suspicious behav-iour or activities that occur within the vi-cinity of their schools to report this immedi-ately,” says Merton.

She added there were far too many inci-dents of vandalism at schools, which usual-ly occur in poorer communities. “This ofcourse comes at a cost to the department, and diverts money away from our learners. In 2015/16, R20 million will be allocated tothe emergency maintenance fund whichwill assist in repairing schools affected byburglary and vandalism.”

Fried Chicken of Wimpy. Sê my watter ha-welose kan daai kosse bekostig?

With the Easter road carnage starting lastweek, legislation compelling motorists touse children’s car seats has been welcomed.ER24 emergency services applauded the

new regulation in the National Road Traffic

Act that aims to protect children. The regulation states children under the

age of three will be compelled to be strappedin as of Friday 1 May.Non-compliant motorists will face hefty

fines.ER24’s Chitra Bodasing offered the follow-

ing advice:VInfants should ride rear-facing at least

until they are a year old.VOnce this is outgrown, they should use

a forward-facing safety seat with a full har-ness.

VChildren who have outgrown a converti-ble safety seat should use a booster seat.

VChildren tall enough to wear an adultseat belt should still ride in the back seat un-til they are 13 years old.

VAdjust the seat belt so the lap belt crossesthe child’s upper thighs and the diagonalbelt crosses the upper chest.

Car seat rule for children welcomed

ronde spel, doeltreffende inklimwerk by dielosskrums en veel beter agterlynspel wathulle uiteindelik welverdiend laat seëvierhet.Durbanville-Bellville het die eindstryd te-

gemoet gegaan sonder beseerde eerstekeuse-spelers soos Waldo Prinsloo (slot), Renier

The second round of the SouthAfrican main circuit champi-onship due to take place in con-junction with the Extreme Fes-tival sponsored by WingfieldMotors at Killarney on Satur-day, is expected to be the big-gest meeting of the year.Topping the bill, the national

production cars are to be seenin a virtual one class format forthe first time. This has comeabout after the class T entriesreceived more muscle by beingallowed additional turbo boost, larger tyres and unrestrictedsuspension modifications. The results of the three

events during the first round atZwartkops last month whichsaw Michael van Rooyen’s tur-bocharged Chev Cruze win thefirst race, with class A AudiS4’s in the hands of HennieGroenewald and Michael Ste-phan taking the next two, ap-pear to justify the changes. However, the pit critics were

claiming the tyre wear on theabrasive surface worked to thebenefit of the all wheel driveAudis. Additionally, Killarneyhas longer straights that maybe an advantage for the smallerturbocharged Chev and FordFocus STs.It sounds like a close one.Brennon Green (Golf 5 GTi)

is the Cape’s only representa-tive in a new production carcategory for privateers. Hismain opposition is likely tocome from Freek Burger Jnrand Snr, who were outstandingat Zwartkops in a pair ofMazda3 MPSs.Then there are some who

claim the skrik vir niks tigers inthe Engen Volkswagen Cupevents are always responsiblefor some of the best racing of

the day. Of course the driver towatch here is teenager Sheldonvan der Linde for whom bigthings are being predicted. Al-though Sheldon won the firstround up north he was closelyshadowed by Tasmin Pepperand Shaun la Reservee, withthe Cape’s John Craig Jnr, notfar behind. With a home track advan-

tage, it is going tobe interestingto see how local hotshots Niandu Toit and Jurie Swart Jnrfare in this hard fought one-make category. While theMidas Sport Durat-

ec Formula Fords are the clos-est we’re likely to get to Formu-la 1 at Killarney, their racing atZwartkops was more excitingthan in the events at the AlbertPark and in Kuala Lumpur. The sensation in the first racewas the performance of rookiedriver and former karter Ju-lian van der Watt, who went onto beat Robert Wolk and Matt-hew Merton.Unfortunately Van der

Watt’s lack of experienceshowed when a Highveld thun-derstorm race brought out thewet weather tyres and resultedin him dropping down the or-der. Victory then went to Wolkwho was followed by reigningchampionNicholas vanWeeleyand Dewald Brummer.Other events during the day

feature Crossley and Webbsports and GT cars, MidasSport Clubman cars and MikeHopkins superbikes. There will be combined

events for the V8 Masters andMakita Formula supercars. With the first race due off at

10:10, admission is R90 foradults and R40 for scholars un-der 16. There is no charge forkiddies under 12. Tickets are al-so available fromComputicket.
