An alleged illegal drag racer appearedin the Kuils River Magistrate’s Courtyesterday morning after fleeing traf-

fic authorities and crashing his vehicle intoa wall.

The driver of the vehicle was chargedwith reckless and negligent driving.

Thehigh speed chase occurred last Thurs-daynight on theR102near theButtskop rail-way crossing near Blackheath.

Citymayoral committeemember for safe-ty and security, JP Smith, said in a state-ment released on Friday that members ofthe traffic services’ Ghost Squad were pa-trolling the R102 when they noticed two ve-hicles participating in an illegal street race.

“Officers intercepted the racers and acti-vated their blue lights and sirens, afterwhich the driver of one of the vehiclespulled over to the side of the road. However, the second driver attempted to get away, driving off at speeds in excess of 170 km/h.

“The driver lost control of his vehiclewhile approaching a bend in the road, spunout of control, and hit a lamp post. The vehi-cle travelled another 50metres before collid-

ing with a stormwater bridge wall and flip-ping onto its side,” Smith said.

The driver was travelling in a Honda V-Tec.

“The driver managed to get out of the ve-hicle complaining of pains in his chest andpelvis and was taken to hospital where hewas declared to be in a stable condition.”TygerBurger learned that the other driver

was travelling in a Nissan Sentra.Bertus van Dalen, councillor of ward 14,

saidmany complaints about drag racing arereceived from the public.

“Eesteriver especially is a popular place

where they race on late Thursday’s nights.“Over the last few years at least 15 lamp

posts along the R102 between Buttskop andEersteriver have been damaged due to ra-cing motorists,” Van dalen said.

Captain Isaac van Niekerk, spokespersonfor the Kuils River police, said they’reaware of drag racers along the R102.

“It happens from time to time, but notvery regularly.”

He said that theymostly race late at night, and mostly on Friday nights.

Some of the illegal races end in fatalitiesdue to accidents, he said.

The health ministry of the Western Capehas again urged patients to be aware thatthere is a national shortfall in the supply ofpolio and measles vaccines.

Western Cape government health is ma-naging the available stock in the provinceto reduce the impact as far as possible, ame-dia release from the office of ministerTheuns Botha, MEC for health, stated onThursday.

“We are doing our best to manage the

stock situation. In the meantime patientsshould contact their local healthcare facili-ties to enquire about the availability ofstock. Should stock not be available imme-diately, please ensure that the child is im-munised as soon as stock returns to nor-mal,” Botha said.

As an interim arrangement, vaccines arebeing re-distributed between facilities to re-duce the impact of low stocks as far as possi-ble.

According to a letter from the Biovac In-stitute, the national supplier, 1.8 million do-ses of measles vaccines will be delivered tothenational department of healthby the endof this month.

More than three million doses of poliovaccines were not released by the supplieras the vaccine vial monitor was out of speci-fication and could not be released.

Replacement polio vaccines stock is sche-duled to be released towards the end ofMay.

RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj

AlarmstelselDie inbrekers is deurdie alarmstelsel ge-

steur. “Ek was bang hulle gaan by die kin-ders se kamers in en dis toe dat ek in diegang wag dat my vrou die haelgeweerbring. Gelukkig, of ongelukkig, bring symy die sleutels, want sy was bietjie deur-mekaar.

is al 23 keer by my huis ingebreek.”’nSekerheidsmaatskappyhet opdie alarm

reageer.

Hier moet in el-ke sektor 24 uur per dag voertuie wees.

His attemps to locate his biological father’sburial site has taken David Sidloyi (31) ona seven-year journey – a journey that hastaught him forgiveness and will hopefullyprovide.

David, who lives in Driftsands and waspreviously employed by the City of CapeTown although he is unemployed at the mo-ment, started looking for his father’s grave-site in 2007 after discovering that he and hislate brother were adopted.

The two brothers were raised by theirgreat grandparents after their mother gavethem up while staying in Lady Frere in theEastern Cape.

His twin brother died at the tender ageof seven.

The boys never met their biological fa-ther, although when David embarked onhis journey he managed to meet his mother.

“I did not know that I was adopted,” he

told TygerBurger in an interview recently.“My guardian, the person I use to call mo-

ther, encouraged me to find forgiveness, toforgive myself and my parents,” he said.

David managed to locate his motherthrough the help of family members.

The mother and son were reunited in2010. His mother passed away later that sa-me year.

She told David about his father, ThembaGcanga, and that he had died.

Over the years he discovered that his fa-ther had stayed in Crossroads and had diedduring unrest on 18 February 1985.

He consulted community members, wardcouncillors, the local offices of the ANC andat a later stage the police and national pro-secuting authority’s (NPA) missing per-son’s task team.

With the help of he NPA he determinedwhere his father was shot, how he was shotand who collected his body.

Since then he has been searching for thegrave.

“ I am doing this to be able to know wheremy father is resting. It will bring closureto me and my family.

“God willing, when I have children I willbe able to point out where my father is.

“At the moment I can’t find the word thatcan describe the pain and agony.

“There is that longing in me, to want toknow where my father is.

“For seven years now have I been lookingfor the burial site of my father after lear-ning that he had passed on,” David said.

On the documents in his possession it sta-tes that his father is buried in Nyanga.

“I want to find him and be able to givehim a proper burial.

“Some of the family members have givenup. They do not even talk about it. They ha-ve put the whole matter to rest, but I knowdeep down they also have that longing toknow,” David said.

KENNISGEWING VANSUBRAADSVERGADERINGS: APRIL 2014

A group of volunteers from a retail chainstore recently exchanged their customerservice duties and picked up paint brushesand tools to help renovate and restore EarlyChildhood Development (ECD) centresacross the Peninsula. One of the ECD centres that received so-

me tender love and care by employees fromWoolworths and the non profit organizati-on Newkidz, was the Free to Grow EduCarein Blue Downs near Eersteriver.“Their current one-room building struc-

ture is sound but needed to be brightenedup and finished off,” said head of transfor-mation at Woolworths, Zinzi Mgolodela.“Staff revamped the interior and exterior

of this EduCare centre, making it a moreconducive environment for children to le-arn,” said Zinzi. The Nokhwezi EduCare in Mfuleni was

another of the fortunate centres who recei-ve the special treatment.“Like most EduCares in the community,

the school fees they receive are minimaland even with the government subsidy it isdifficult to keep a hand on much neededmaintenance.“The exterior of the building needed a

fresh coat of paint, the playground neededrepair work and the garden some brighte-ning up,” Zinzi said. The projects forms part of the Wool-

worths Trust, a trust that was formed in2003 to co-ordinate their community deve-lopment and charity activities.Eight other organizations have recently

supported include the Heatherdale Child-ren’s Home in Athlone, Carol’s Day Care

Centre inMitchellsPlain, ZanethembaKidzHaven in Philippi, Hands of Compassion inRetreat, the SOS Children’s Village inThornton, ThePlace of BlessingEduCare inGuguletu, Khuti’s Homecare for DisabledChildren in Khayelitsha, and the Khulan-golwazi EduCare, also based in Khayelits-ha.“One of the focus areas for the Wool-

worthsTrusthasbeenencouragingemploy-ees’ long history of supporting social cau-ses, schools and charities in their local com-munities.“In a recent venture, Woolworths Trust

made it possible for Woolworths staff mem-bers to team up with an inspiring organiza-tion called Newkidz to renovate 10 facilitiesthat care for children in Cape Town.“Newkidz on the block is a Cape Town ba-

sed non-profit organization that helps to es-tablish loving homes for orphaned, vulne-rable and destitute children. “They run aprogramme which facilitates the renovati-on and maintenance of children’s homes, foster family homes and ECD centres withthe help of corporate sponsors,” Zinzi said. The ten facilities that care for children

were selected by Newkidz and represent adiverse cross-section of the communities inCape Town.“Early Childhood Development is an im-

portant phase in a child’s life yet so manycommunities lack ECD centres to educateand equip kids during their foundation ye-ars and strategic partnerships like theseare what enable us to continue to do whatwe do and have an impact,” Hilda de Beer, spokesperson for Newkidz, said.

Volunteers fromWoolworths recentlyhelped renovateseveral ECD centresacross the Peninsula. One of those was theFree to Grow EduCare(pictured) in BlueDowns near Eersteriver. The project formspart of the Woolworths Trust and wasconducted in conjunction with non profitorganization, Newkidz.

Over the Easter weekend Cape Townwill host two different South Afri-can national motocross events

which are sure to showcase some dirtmadness. The first event of the weekend, Round

2 of the MSA South African nationalchampionship, will be hosted at Zone 7(just off the N7) on Friday 18 April. Thetrack is known for its fast, gnarly racingwhich keeps the competition tight.Cape Town’s MX hero, Anthony Ray-

nard (BigBay), has dominated every regi-onal event at this track this year andlooks to domuch the same at the nationalevent as all of SA’s best line up for qualityracing.Saturday and Sunday will then bring

all the Round 2 competitors from theWOMZATRPDistributors SouthAfricanMotocross Nationals series to the Melk-bosMX track (on the R27 outside ofMelk-bosstrand). This is definitely the sandiesttrack of the lot and the guys will have tobring some serious heart to fight theirway through the track.Melkbos played host to the nationals

last year and the racing certainly deliver-ed.Round 1 of the WOMZA national series

took place in Port Elizabeth last monthwhere Raynard placed third. Since thenhe’s been putting in the hours to makesure he dominates at home this weekend. Both races are bound to go down to the

wire.

The world stage beckons for self proclaimedadrenalin junkie and female powerlifter Bo-nita Hein (43) from Parow. She will compete in the u-84kg division

with the best in the world from 1 to 8 Juneat the IPF (International Federation of Po-werlifting) to be held in Potchefstroom.“I have the chance of a lifetime to step on

a platform with the best powerlifters in theworld - an opportunity to finally wear the fa-mous green and gold blazer is what I dreamabout,” said an excited Hein. But the so-called smaller sports all have

the same common problem – funds.Bonita has had the opportunity to repre-

sent her country overseas on three previousoccasions but due to lack of sponsors andfunding, she wasn’t able to compete.“It is devastating to train hard, make sa-

crifices to achieve the highest level in yoursport, to then have this huge financial barri-er blocking your dreams.”But all this is now a thing of the past and

her focus is squarely on Potchefstroom.“My preparation for the world champs

does not necessarily change much from

what I normally do in terms of training anddiet. I have realized that you have to trainand eat smart to keep your strength, and vi-gorous training for long hours affects mystrength significantly.“Competingwith top international power-

lifters who have the best training facilities, coaches and sponsored supplement compa-nies at their disposal is not something I puttoo much thought in as this can affect yourperformance and nerves on meet day.“Although I am very competitive and al-

ways push the limits to set a new personalbest onmy lifts, I have to be smart inmyownabilities and take a few things into conside-ration.“Planning to be at your best physical con-

dition on the day of the competition usuallystarts seven days prior to the time you stepon the platform. Knowing your opening at-tempt weight to start with according to howyour body feels all plays a vital role.”Bonita has a best raw squat of 117kg,

bench press 70kg, dead lift 155kg and a totalof 337,5kg.V Anyone interested to sponsor Bonita or to makea financial contribution can contact her on 079 4883212.
