Adult shop given athumbs up by City

CARMEN JACOBS

The application process to open his adult en-tertainment retail shop, Intimate Pleasures, seems to not have been such a pleasurableexperience for store owner Donald Webster.

Webster’s application for a licence to oper-ate a store of this nature in Kuils River wasfinally granted by the City of Cape Town ear-lier this month.

This consent comes after Webster’s eight-month long uphill battle to get his licence ap-proved.

The approval of the licence was an-nounced at the last subcouncil meeting on 16November, this despite efforts to have the ap-plication rejected.TygerBurger reported on the matter in Oc-

tober when the subcouncil rejected his appli-cation to which Webster then lodged an ap-peal with the planning and appeals commit-tee to oppose subcouncil’s decision.

Some of the fears listed as reasons by thesubcouncil included the effect of the store onchildren in the area, possible attraction ofprostitution and lewd activities and unsa-voury characters being drawn to the area.

In his appeal Webster strongly defendedhis intentions with opening the store andlisted a range of reasons to prove his storewill not be detrimental to the community.

In defence he argued the store will nothave viewing booths, will be equipped with

strict security and will not be displaying anylarge signage advertising the store. Al-though the application process for the storedid not require a public participation proc-ess to make a decision on the licence applica-tion; subcouncil 21 did – according to infor-mation in the meeting minutes – receive onewritten objection to the store’s opening.

Webster had one too. “One person ap-proached me about the location of the store. He wanted me to open in the industrial areaand not on the main road.”

He maintains his initial argument thatcustomers want the shop there. “We havehad positive feedback from the people thathave visited the store. They are happy we areopen here now and don’t have to travel farto get what they need or want.”

The granting of the licence come withstrict regulations. The store must adhere tothe following: displaying the business li-cence at all times, the licence is not transfer-able, the premises must at all times complywith all requirements of the Tobacco Prod-ucts Control Act 1993 and the City’s healthdepartment can call upon any requirementsto be made.

Commenting on the application process toopen the first store of its kind in Kuils River,Webster said: “The biggest challenge wasgetting past the moral objection of two coun-cillors, to try and explain that we are not a‘sleazy sex shop’.”

Men empoweredduring campaign

CHILTON MELLEM

While the 16 days of activism might fo-cus on women and child abuse, Mfule-ni Police Station took a different ap-proach by hosting a programme formen.

Mfuleni police brought a few organisa-tions to speak to the men of Wesbank,Eerste River and Mfuleni. These weremen who either experienced abuse athome first-hand or knew of someone whowas facing these social issues. Some ofthese groups included Brothers for Life,Health for Men and Triangle Project.

One of the key focuses was that ofabuse, where men learnt the differentkinds of abuse such as physical and psy-chological abuse.

Triangle Project, which is an organisa-tion aimed at helping gay, lesbian andtransgender people tackle their problems

of discrimination, shared their views onabuse.

“We are all equal, despite our gender, age, race and sexual orientation,” Mar-low Newman-Valentine from TriangleProject said.

He explained how gay men and womenseemed to be the most discriminatedagainst.

He used examples where a gay man orwoman would go to the police station tomake a case and they would be laughedat or ridiculed in hospitals.

One of the biggest problems that homo-sexuals face is the issue of correctiverape, which Newman-Valentine termedhate rape.He said that there isnowayyoucan correct someone’s sexual orientationby raping them. The only reason why peo-ple commit this crime is out of pure hate,he continued.

The meeting was ended with somethingto eat sponsored by the Mfuleni Police.

Community meetingWard councillor Gordon Thomas will be hol-ding a community meeting in the Eerste Ri-ver Multipurpose Centre tomorrow (Thurs-day). The meeting will commence at 19:00.Everyone is welcome to attend as issues ofupgrading the ward will be discussed. Timewill be made for questions and answers.

Kleinvlei police are asking the community’sassistance in solving the following two cases:

. On 9 April the body of a black man wasfound in the bushes off Old Faure Road. Thebody was badly decomposed, but some facialrecognition was possible.

He was wearing a black T-shirt and his ageis estimated to be around 30-40 years of age.

. The second body was found on 18 Septem-

ber off Old Faure Road aswell. The victim is also ablack man. He was found

wearing a brown and white fez on his head,a brown check shirt, blue, brown and black di-amond jersey and blue denim jeans with blackand silver belt and a pair of blue and whiteNike tekkies.

Anyone who can assist with the identificati-on of these bodies, or with any information onhow they died, can contact Sgt Samuel Camp-bell on 079 933 6297 or 021 902 8346.

The learners had been practising for themaths competition for just over a month bytaking classes after school and even attend-ing class three consecutive Saturdays.

Overmeyer felt that the atmosphere at thecompetition was good and that the studentsreally enjoyed participating.

Peters felt the need to start this competi-tion to give learners more exposure to mathscompetitions where it is needed.

“When I was at school, I got better at mathsbut children of the northern suburbs didn’tget much exposure to maths competitions,”Peters said.

Long walk for churchCHILTON MELLEM

St Luke’s Anglican Church isone step closer to finishing theexpansion of their church byholding a big walk on Friday.

Congregation memberspitched in to do their bit to raisefunds for their church by partak-ing in their second 100km walk. This walk was done last year tocontribute to the building of thechurch and this year was no dif-ferent.

Walkers started their 15-hourjourney in Malmesbury withhopes of seeing the victory lineat Stratford Primary School inEerste River.

Some congregational mem-bers walked 10 to 20 kilometresfrom the starting point Fridayevening while others opted tostart the following morning andend the journey off with the last20 kilometres.

The only person who has fin-ished the full 100 kilometres twoyears in a row was 50-year-old,Dirk Petersen. Dirk is a prisonwarder in Stellenbosch and alsobelongs to a walking club inPaarl.

So it comes as no surprise that

Dirk showed such amazing en-durance.

He prepared himself for thewalk by walking at least threetimes a week and on weekendsand off days he would walk threeto four hours.

“My muscles felt fine after thewalk but I think I built up acidin my stomach which didn’tmake me feel too well. This yearI wore the right shoes, last yearI wore the wrong shoes which re-sulted in me getting blisters. Atnight it got quite cold and I hadto put on a jacket, that must havebeen the worst part of the walk,”Dirk said.

When the walkers neared thevictory line of the school, theywere escorted by motorcyclists, drummies and their very ownbrigade marching band to cheerthem on.

This walk left quite an impres-sion on St Luke’s priest, FatherRodney Uren.

“I never knew that these guyswould be able to do it, I am veryimpressed. It’s quite an achieve-ment for them and the church,”Uren said.

Next year the walk will be“bigger to increase funds”.

Tribute show honours late dance iconCARMEN JACOBS

A tribute show in honour of a great localhero whose life was tragically cut short.

The Project Break Free (PBF) team ofwhich Isaac van Wyngaard was the found-er member (he was allegedly killed in ahit on his life) plans to host a tribute showin memory of Isaac, or Bboy Ice as he wasknown. Leroy Wentzel from PBF sharedtheir reasons for hosting the show: “Topay honour to Isaac for what he hasachieved in his lifetime. He was very pas-sionate about dancing and loved teachingthe youth the art of breakin and how tolive a positive life.”

Isaac inspired the PBF project when hestarted teaching local boys from Sareptab-boy and breakdancing.

The classes became a point for youngboys to come together and form part of apositive activity. “With the tribute showwe are showing that Ice’s legacy lives onin the kids and in the people’s lives hetouched,” says Wentzel.

The boys who Ice taught in the classeswill on the night perform and showcasetheir skills. The tribute show will alsoserve as a platform to recruit new candi-dates for the dance training programme

and will feature free workshops. “With thiswe want to grow the artform of breakin.”

Isaac was one of the pioneers in promot-ing the art of breakdancing in Sarepta, where he lived. TygerBurger last year be-

fore his death reported on the PBF communityupliftment project started by Isaac and friendsin 2009 in Sarepta, Kuils River. Back then Isaacexcitedly shared his positive goals he had inmind when hosting the free classes at theSarepta Sport and Recreation Centre.

The PBF group has now managed to get thego-ahead for the erection of a mural in the com-munity where he lived. “The mural will serveas a commemorative symbol of what Ice hasdone in his community as a role model and willserve to create awareness about violence, drugabuse and social ills.”

Wentzel, who was one of Ice’s closest friends,

says Ice is dearly missed as a friend. He saysthe time without him has been challenging.“We miss the passion he had and the energyhe brought to shows.

The tribute will take place on Saturday 10December. The show will feature perform-ances by B-Boy Keath vs B-Boy Cheese. Turn-tablism display and DJs. It will be hosted atthe Sarepta Sport and Recreation Hall inRietvlei Street, Sarepta. Workshops will startat 15:00 and will feature: DJ, MC, B-boyingand sound basics. The tribute starts at 17:00.For details contact DJ Keath Bearne on074 374 9340.

The gift of hearingGARY VAN DYK

Gospel artists are getting together to giveagift ofhearing toaRavensmeadwoman.

On Sunday the Fountain Christian Com-munity Centre in Ravenmead will be hostingthe concert to raise funds for Louisa Da Silvawho has been selected to undergo a cochlear

implant but needs to raise thefunds for the procedure.

Da Silva, who is profoundlydeaf, has never allowed her dis-ability to get her down, but fe-els that the operationwill allowher to be an inspiration to morepeople with disabilities.

“I have been deaf since birth, but from an early age I decidedI was going to try my utmostnot to allow my deafness to de-termine my future.

“In 1978 I attended the Domi-nican School for the Deaf whe-re they taught me to speak butnot sign language, then in 1984I enrolled at Ravensmead HighSchool,” she said.

She remembers she had towork twice as hard to achieveresults, and people still tendedto look down at her.

“Funny how when you havea hearing problem, people of-ten tend to think that you arementally handicapped as well. They look down at you, put youin a box and sadly sometimesit is thosewhoshouldbe closestto you who treat you in thisway.”

After high school she went toAthlone Technical School whe-re she studied hairdressingand she now runs a salon fromher home in Ravensmead.

During September this yearshe got the news that she hadbeen selected for the cochlearimplant.

Studentegaanlank wag

As jyegter ’n student by Northlink-kollege is,gaan jy moontlik lank wag.

“Mylewe was net eengroot gemors. Ekhet selfmoord-neigings gehad.

Wishtree bears Christmas fruitGifts are streaming in for theTyger-valley Shopping Centre’s WishtreeInitiative – four trolleys have beenfilled with presents.TygerBurger is the media spon-

sor of this yearly event in whichhundreds of gifts are collected forthe underprivileged.

Hajni Lamberti, marketing man-ager of the centre, said people whohave taken tags from the treeshould return the gifts to them as

soon as possible.“Anybody else who still wants to

wrap a gift for this initiative, canbring the gift, with a tag indicating

if it is for a boy or a girl, and theirage, to the centre,” she said.

Wishtree elves will ensure thatall the children’s gifts are safe and

secure until delivery, which will be-gin at the TygerBear HoldingHands event on 10December,whereover 5 000 TygerBear volunteerswill take a stand against abused andtraumatised children – this event isto be held at the Tygervalley Centreitself.

Drie T’bergspanne boSAREL BURGER

THOMAS CAROLUS

A big crowd is expected tonight at the Ath-loneStadiumwhenEngenSantos faceSun-downs in an Absa Premier League matchstarting at 19:30.

After his side’s disappointing TelkomKnockout semi-final, Santos coach BoebieSolomons said he felt his side deserved morethan just to bow out in that fashion.

Santos went down 3-0 to a ruthless BidvestWits. Solomons, however, feels the scorelinewas not a true reflection of the game and thelocal coach found himself under immensepressure, with his job on the line.

They will certainly need to sort out their de-fence if they are serious about finishing in thetop eight.

It was the lack of composure that let Santosdown against a Wits side that is progressiveand looking more dangerous in this league.

After a very poor start to the season, coach

Boebie Solomons finally seemed to get it rightbut Santos should know that good footballwithout results won’t save any club from rele-gation.

With the third worse defensive record, theywill need todoawhole lot better in the remain-ing games if they are to secure their PSL sta-tus.

The last four games of this year will be cru-cial to their survival.

“We are in a very difficult position, but I amconfident that we won’t be relegated,’’ addedSolomons.

“You never know what will happen in thefuture, but I’m sure we are not going down.

“I’m very happy with how things have beengoing and positive that the team is ready tomake its way up the log.

“A top eight finish is an achievement we’dappreciate.

“I was impressed by our performance in ourlast league match against Kaizer Chiefs,” hesaid.
