The suspects, aged between 27 and 37, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court the next day and have since been or- dered to be transferred in custody to Gaut- eng where they will appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on Friday 15 July. It is alleged that a South African and five Nigerians targeted unsuspecting women on- line and then conned them out of thousands of rands. Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ram- ovha elaborates: “The 31-year-old South Af- rican woman, suspected to have been the one who cashed out all the money market trans- actions deposited by victims, was found with R50 000 in cash when she was arrested. Thus far the seven victims who have come for- ward have been conned out of a combined amount of close to R400 000.” He says ongoing investigations into the online dating scam led authorities to arrest two suspects in Burgundy Estate and the rest in Summer Greens. “The suspects would create fake accounts on online dating sites to lure women. They would chat with the victims for a while before starting to come up with different scenarios which would see women depositing or transferring money to the banking details which the sus- pects would have provided,” he says. More victims are expected to come forward. This latest case of suspected online dating deception follows on another, also commit- ted by a Nigerian man last year. In that case the man targeted “vulnerable victims for grooming” before asking for money for false emergencies. In his profiles he claimed to be wealthy and able to repay monies advanced. The profiles included photographs and per- sonal information. There has since been a se- ries of court cases which dealt with other on- line dating scam incidents. In almost every incident of this type of crime over the last few years, a foreign na- tional was the main suspect or one of the sus- pects. Most of these types of crimes are built around establishing the trust of the victim before asking for money. This group of City of Cape Town contracted cleaners braved the drizzle on Friday to clean the north and south retention dams along Giel Basson Drive. The north and south retention damsbetween Munnik Laas Street andGiel Basson Drive were cleaned by

a swathe of workers last Friday – in therain. One reader phonedTygerBurger full of

praise for theCityofCapeTown, and saidthat too often thannot the bad is reportedand the good forgotten. As it turns out, the reaction time of

complaint to resolution happened veryquickly last week, with a resident send-ing local ward councillor Sakkie Pretori-us an email on Tuesday evening aboutthe dirty retention dams, and just a fewdays later it had been resolved. He goes on to explain that the garbage

that gathers in these dams washes downwith the stormwater from the adjacentsuburbs and very quickly make thesedams look very dirty. “Thankfully, theadjacent suburbs help the City tremen-

dously well by keeping their areas clean.I have in the past been asked by othercouncillors how I manage to keep theward so tidy, but then I only laugh andsay it is mostly down to the community. So thank you to them!”With this obviously being the run-in to

election, Pretorius was asked to respondto inevitable claims that councillors “on-ly do something just before elections tobe elected again”.He responded that as far as hewas con-

cerned, complaints are managed in ex-actly the same way before or after elec-tions, and the constant monitoring bythe City of Cape Town demands this con-stant action. The reasons the workers had to clean

these dams on Friday were not on theminds of the people who did their jobswith pride on Friday. They were laughing in the drizzle

while playing their part in the giant cog-wheel of society, which more often thannot runs surprisingly smoothly.

“Ao. JacquesPieters en konstt. Members of the Bothasig NeighbourhoodWatch (BNW)will remainhumble after theyreceived huge praise on their Facebookpage from a man they recently helped.Paul Castle’s vehicle broke down at 23:00

on Saturday at a very dangerous spot onPlattekloof Road. Patrollingmembers of theneighbourhood watch saw the car andhelped Castle. He was so grateful that hepromised to make a donation to the BNW.Castle wrote a piece on Facebook where

he thanked the BNW for saving him.“What would I have done without these

guardian angels? Tonight they savedmy ba-con more than any of my written words candepict. Imagine being stuck at the side of the

road in a suburb that you are unfamiliarwith and almost 30 kilometers from home. While I sat in the driver’s seat wonderingwhat the hell to do, the most amazing sightappeared.More thanadozen lights, bicyclesand helpful members of the BNW came toour aid. These dedicated men and womenwere able to helpfully push and tow me toour destination. Needless to say I owe themmore than one. Discovering that this is anon-profit and self appointed communitypartnership, working well into the hours ofSaturday night during one of the coldestwinters in Cape Town – not formoney or be-cause they were told to do so – I was simplyshocked that people like this still exist. From the bottom of my heart I would liketo extend to all the loyal and dedicated ser-vice members of this group bothmy sincere

thanks and deep appreciation for kind, warm, generous andhelpful people like you.I know you only accepted my thanks. Butplease sendme your banking details via pri-vate message so that I can make a contribu-tion to your cause,” wrote Castle.Rob Stokel, chairperson of BNW, says

they accept the praise, but it was just partof anight’swork. “The stretchof roadwhereCastle’s vehicle broke down is a very dan-gerous area. The road is currently underconstruction and has been reduced to onelane. Castle’s vehicle got stuck in a placewhere visibility was low and we had to gethim away as soon as possible. It was also aSaturday night and on weekends, peopledrive like crazy on that road. If someonecame around the bend at high speed hecould have driven into Castle,” says Stokel.

Another week and another drug bust inBothasig. In recent weeks the Bothasig police

have regularly caught dealers, and lastweek was no exception when two suspectswere arrestedwith 70 grams of cocainewitha street value of R20 000.According to police spokesperson War-

rant Officer Jacques Mostert the police re-ceived information about drug dealing.“After the information was received, an

undercover operation was launched. TheBothasig police were assisted by officersfrom the flying squad, a K9 Unit, Parow po-lice as well as some residents. Station com-mander Lieutenant-Colonel Patrick Jacobslead the operations,” says Mostert.

Two suspects were arrested for dealing indrugs when they tried to sell cocaine.“A search of their vehicle was positive

whenmore cocainewas found inside it. Justover 70 grams of cocaine to the value ofR20 000 and a large amount of cash wasseized. The police also went to the home ofone of the suspects and seized dagga,” toMostert. The suspects, a 32-year-old man fromMil-

nertonanda23-year-oldman fromBothasig, were detained for dealing in drugs. A 2011model Volkswagen Jetta they used was alsoimpounded by the police. The police initiat-ed theprocess of having the car declared for-feited to the state because it was used in thecommission of an offence.Jacobs urges the community to come for-

ward with information about drug dealers.“It is important that we have people on the

ground. Our recent success shows thatwhen we work together with residents, wecan win this fight against drug dealers.Drugs are everyone’s responsibility, so byhelping the police catch the dealers you arehelping the community,” says Jacobs. He gave the assurance that all informa-

tion received will be treated in a confiden-tial manner. “We will not put anyone’s lifein danger, so people don’t have the fearwhen they make contact,” says Jacobs.According the Mostert the elimination of

drug dealers is a priority for the Bothasig.“We have been really successful. This yearhas been very good in terms of catching andgetting drug dealers convicted. We hope thearrests send out very a strong message todealerswho are still doing their illegal busi-ness.Wewill come for you andwewillmakesure that you go to prison,” says Mostert.

A pamphlet calling for homosexuals andnon-Muslims to be killed was recently dis-tributed at an unnamed Parow night clubthat caters mainly for gay patrons. The origin of the pamphlet is being rigor-

ously investigated by Parow police, and ac-cording to reports a private investigatorhas also been called to action by a Rylandsbusinessman, whose name appeared on thepamphlet. He has since claimed this is not

the first incident where his namewas listedon similar flyers distributed by someonewho is unhappy about a property he islinked to.The flyer calls for people to “join our lat-

est crusade” and “sponsor a rocket to killnon-Muslims” and “kill all lesbians andgays all over the world”.Police are investigating a case of intimi-

The Panorama, Welgelegenand Plattekloof suburbsand its local neighbour-

Forum (CPF) chairperson, Rog-er Cannon, agrees that break-ins are concerning in PWP,which he describes as consist-ing of wealthier suburbs.

Security measuresCannon says people should

join the watch, Rudman sayshome owners should increasetheir “layers of security” tomake it as difficult for the in-truder to gain access, and Both-asig police spokesperson, War-rant Officer Jacques Mostert, suggests people should varytheir daily routine as much aspossible. The latter continues: “Home

owners should ensure theyhaveburglar bars installed as a firstline of defence and not leave ac-cessible windows open duringthe night when it is warm. Also, ensure that security gates areinstalled at the front and backdoors, and use it. Do not go out-side and leave the security gatesopen – especially if you do nothave the door in your sight.Rather lock the gate and unlockit when you enter.“Do not let strangers enter

your residence to make tele-phone calls. Take their details

through the locked security gateand make the call on their be-half. When you see suspiciouspeople or vehicles in your area, please phone the police. Even ifit is a false alarm, the visibilityof the police vehiclemight scareoff other potential criminals. In-stall security lights aroundyour home and check for blindspots. Good locks and goodneighbours who watch out foreach other can be the best deter-rent against burglars. Securesliding doors so that it cannot belifted off their tracks. Store pooland garden equipment (longitems such as cleaning poles)where perpetrators cannot haveaccess to it. Ensure that garagedoors are included on the housealarm or locked with a deadboltto prevent garage burglaries.”

Bigger pictureMostert’s advice was specifi-

cally aimed at residents of Both-asig, but it can be used by resi-dents all over.Cannon’s call for people to

“see the bigger picture” and jointheir local neighbourhoodwatch is a necessity in PWP, asit is in every suburb.“If you want a safer neigh-

bourhood, the police cannot doit alone. Stop complaining anddo something about it,”he says.“Even that person who is way

too extreme for most people inhis or her suggestion in fightingcrime is better than the residentwho sits behind security gatesand only caring about him orherself,” adds Cannon.“The police are underre-

sourced in South Africa, but ifeveryone pulled together thenwe will make life very hard in-deed for wrongdoers.”

“There are so many areas in theParow policing precinct, and eachpresents its ownunique set of prob-lems and challenges,” said localCommunity Policing Forum (CPF)chairperson Roger Cannon. This statement has inspired the

conception of a series of articles, whichwill touch onone specific ar-ea a week.TygerBurgerwill speak to the lo-

cal neighbourhood watch and hearfrom the people who know theirsuburb the best. The eight areas of Parow, based

on the active neighbourhoodwatches, are Parow North Upper,Parow North Lower, Avonwood/De Tijger, Fairfield, Parow Valley,Pacrif, ParowWest and Panorama,Welgelegen and Plattekloof (PWP).“Obviously one of the key solu-

tions to preventing crime in eachof these areas comes down to theresidents themselves,” explainsCannon. “By joining their neigh-bourhood watch they are alreadytaking a huge step to living in a saf-er environment. The least they cando is join a WhatsApp group estab-lished in their street or suburb. This is a great way of monitoringthe flow of valuable information, such as a suspicious person or ve-hicle spotted in their suburb.”According to Cannon one person

will report, for instance a suspi-cious vehicle, and then anotherwill say they just saw it turn downthe street and later another willsay it has just left the suburb. Some of these WhatsApp groups

can become littered with smalltalk, and to combat this Cannonsays there should be two groups –one for normal communicationand one for emergencies only. Onecan assign a different notificationsound to each group and then youwill immediately knowwhen thereis, as example, a robbery.“The time has come for every

single person concerned withcrime to think bigger. Together wecan play a real part in making apositive difference,” he continues, before adding that one WhatsApp

group he belongs to has alreadyreached the maximum number ofmembers.“I don’t know the exact number,

but it could be in its thousands,” heconcludes. This week TygerBurger will fo-

cus on the PWP area, where break-ins are a great concern. From nextweekTygerBurger Parow andTyg-erBurger De Grendel will each runits own separate series of articles, with Parow focusing on Pacrif andDe Grendel focusing on Bothasig.

There is always a first time for every-thing – just ask Daniel Fourie (20)from Plattekloof who became an in-

stant millionaire on Friday 1 July in thefirst competition he ever entered.

And even though multiple entrieswere allowed in Tyger Valley Centre’sWin a Million competition, Daniel en-tered only once –whenhe bought a leath-er strap to the value of R400 atWatch Re-public.

His entry was drawn out of more than100 000 entries.

“I was still at work and wasn’t presentat the draw. I received a voicemail mes-sage on my phone and didn’t recognisethe number. I dialled 121 and heard thatI was the winner of the million Rand. I

phoned Laretha Blom, marketing man-ager at Tyger Valley Centre, and whenshe congratulated me on being the win-ner, I was speechless,” says Daniel.

“Our Win a Million competition wasrunning for the past four months and itwas a once-off competition of thismagni-tude. All that was required was to spendR350 at any store in Tyger Valley, attachthe till slip to the entry form and pop itin one of our entry boxes. We receivedmore than a 100 000 entries. All entrantsheld their breath for the day of the draw, keeping their entries flowing in until12:00 noon on 30 June, however therecould only be one winner and our luckyvictor was Daniel.

“His entrywas pulled out by one of theacrobats from the Zip Zap Circus whomesmerised and hyped the crowd up be-

fore the big announce-ment,” says Laretha.

Being a generousyoungman,Daniel decid-ed to share his prizemon-ey. “I took R350 000 formyself, gave R100 000 tomy church and the rest tomy parents. I am busybuying a Volkswagen Po-lo TSI and upgraded myphone with my share ofthe money. This is mygap year and my life goeson as normal,” says Dan-iel.

Laretha congratulatedDaniel on behalf of TygerValley Centre.

“This was Daniel’schance to make everydream a reality, and hedid! After all, at Tyger

With community safety ashis top priority, the newcaptain at the helm of po-

lice matters in the Tygerberg re-gion plans to shake things up withmeticulously planned strategies.

As of Friday 1 July, Major-Gen-eral Mpumelelo Manci, previouslythe provincial head for Visible Po-licing in the Western Cape, is thenewlyappointed cluster command-er of the Tygerberg police clusterwith its seven police stations inBellville, Brackenfell, Bothasig,Durbanville, Goodwood, Kraaifon-tein and Parow.

“A high priority on the list of ac-tions is the identifying of crimegroups, their arrests and toachieve successful convictions,”he said in an interview withTyger-Burger during a walkabout in Wal-lacedene township last week.

Wallacedene was identified as acrime hotspot in the cluster fromwhere many crime plans arehatched.

“Weall know this region inKraa-ifontein to be a core area criminalsoperate from, and that’s why I amhere. The police need to infiltratethis community and build relation-ships with its residents. We have towork smart and with the trust andcooperation of the community wecan dramatically reduce activityin the hotspot,” he says.

In the coming weeks Manci willestablish a special provincial taskteam to stabilise the area.

“We will start by identifyingcrime groupings, profiling them

and dealing with the kingpins. In-creased operations, visibility andundercover operations will specifi-cally be aimed at disrupting theiractivities and not allowing themthe space to operate,” he explains.

“Criminals, and in particularhouse and car robbers, will be me-ticulously linked to all outstandingcases and we will focus on convict-ing them once and for all.”

He is currently meeting with themanagement teams and detectivebranches at all the police stationsin the cluster.

“I need to familiarise myselfwith all the stations to determinethe needs on ground level whereservice delivery takes place,” hesays.

The welfare and safety of policeofficers is another urgent priority

as are continued efforts to buildpartnership with other depart-ments, NGOs and communitystructures. In this respect, socialcrime drives are already in plan-ning.

“In partnership with the variouscommunity police forums andneighbourhood watches, we willwork together to stamp out crimein the Tygerberg policing precinct. Our mission is to create a safeand secure environment wherecitizens feel and are safe,” he prom-ises.

Major-General Manci joined theSouth African Police Service on17 October 1987 and completed histraining in Hammanskraal.

His first post was as a Constableat Langa in 1988 and while here hewas promoted to Warrant Officer

and worked as a shift commanderin charge of all reliefs at the sta-tion.

During 2001 Manci was promot-ed to the rankofCaptainat theLan-ga Police Station.

After several promotions, he be-came deputy area commissioner atWest Metropole as a director incharge of crime prevention andcrime combatting operations.

He was also the deputy area com-missioner for the Boland area, zone commander of Nyanga andDelft, station commander of Nyan-ga and cluster commander for theOverberg cluster.

“This office will exact all its ef-forts to ensure that the aboveobjec-tives are met,” he concludes.

“This is our purpose and togeth-er we will achieve it.”

LEWENSKIEKIE

Never give the‘complexwitch’ reasonWith more and more people livingphysically closer to one another in thissecurity complex booming market inCape Town, the poor witches havenowhere to turn to.

They used to be able to cook childrenin peace and croon to their hearts’content without disturbing the neigh-bours, but now they live within spittingdistance.

Most of us who reside in a flat or in asecurity complex know the residentwitch, who is almost inevitably a lonely,middle-aged woman trying her darndestto make everyone feel just as miserableas she clearly is.

At night she sleeps with the rule bookunder her pillow and wields it aroundlike a wand during the day.

Sometimes she can be heard cacklingclauses of this book while stirring hercauldron at night.

Reconciling these witches and theirneighbours mightvery well be animpossible task, but the least I cando is try.

Extensive experi-ence in this fieldobliges me to tellall you goodneighbours that it’sbest not to feed thewitch.

Don’t give herany reason to go onthe attack. Thisincludes having apetition signed by

all the other neighbours to force her tobe more civilised.

She will only grow more evil by theday, and one should never underestimateblack magic.

Don’t give her reason to hurl quotedparagraphs of the rule book at you. Thismeans you will have to know it at leasthalf as well as she does. Try to livewithin these rules, which are definitelyjust. Remember, the witch didn’t writethis book. She just enforces it in anunrelenting way.

Perhaps the best advice I can give is toflatly ignore her. She craves attention, sodon’t give her any.

Some of these witches like cookingchildren, so keep yours away from herfront door at all times.

Witches hate the carefree laughter ofchildren and refuse to acknowledge thatthey too cried loudly every now andagain when they were young.

Finally, to the witches of the northernsuburbs – please, for the love of allthings good in this world, give it a rest.

About 99% of neighbours don’t bendrules because they are spiteful. They arejust human – just like you were beforeyou bought that pointy, holier-than-thou,witch’s hat. – André Bakkes

There certainly are somemotorists with arrogance, nopatience, and even a dislikefor scooters. They would hootat them, and even try todrive them off the road atevery opportunity.

But, remember that manymotorists wouldn’t know howit really is to ride one. To fillup with petrol is usually lessthan R30, and a serviceusually less than R500.Maybe that’s the real reason– jealousy.

TheLionsClubDeGrendel recently reflect-ed on the last few years to update readerson some of their proudest moments. The twinning and initiating of the Hear-

ing Aid project with the Exeter West LionsClub UK (their contact being Lions mem-ber Gerald Adams) resulted in over 20 000hearing aids received at no cost. These aids were distributed to local hos-

pitals, clinics or other hearing disorder or-ganisations free of charge. At a purchasecost of R16 000 each, this project was worthin excess of R40 000 000.Another significant project was the

club’s twinning with various German LionClubs who sent them second-hand schooland sport uniforms. They also assisted theclub to reroof the Sanddrift CheshireHomeand to purchase a Nissan delivery vehicle. The club also received three containers

with over 600 000 used spectacles that weresent to the Lions Operation Bright Sighthead office. At R100 each this project is val-ued at R6 000 000.Presently the club feeds over 250 people

per week and collects food almost daily. The food is distributed in the De Grendel

and surrounding areas. This project –thanks to the generosity of local food super-markets – enables clubmembers to distrib-ute food parcels worth over R100 each. Thisfood value is in excess of R1 300 000 per an-num going to indigent fellow citizens. Then, thanks to the generosity of Edel-

weiss Airlines, the club was able to collectand distribute 2000 used passenger blan-kets during 2014, 2015 and 2016. The blan-kets were extremely well received. Atabout R50 each, this donation was worth inexcess of R400 000.Says club president, Patrick Pillay:

“While above projects are worthy of men-tion our personal belief is that the projectswhereby we entertain the physically andmentally handicapped, our seniors and theyouth are extremely meaningful and re-warding. These are done on a one-on-onebasis . The smiles of contentment and hap-piness on the beneficiaries’ faces make allour efforts worthwhile.”

Residents with disabilities fromEdgemead will soon be able to enjoythe outdoors after equipment suitable

for disabled people was installed in BendPark. The new equipment was recently un-

veiled by Helen Carstens, ward councillorfor the area.According to Carstens the idea comes

from a long time ago when she interactedwith a severely disabled boy.“It came tome at that time that nomatter

if you are disabled in any way, you’d stillwant to enjoy the outdoors. I often won-dered what it must be like for wheelchair-bound children to watch their able-bodiedsiblings flying high on a swing and alsowhether thewheelchairwould even be ableto access the park.“This equipment, which comprises two

swings, will certainly bring inclusivity to

an outdoor park,” says Carstens. She explained that much planning went

into the placing of the highly specialisedequipment with many site visits and muchvariables coming into the equation. The different aspects that needed to be

looked at included the level of the groundas well as easy access and traffic implica-tions.“The Bend Park was eventually ear-

marked as the most suitable, and I am real-ly happy because it is a park that has playequipment, gym equipment and now equip-ment for the disabled,” she says.“A family can really have a wonderful

time at this fully inclusive park. Most of theoutdoor activities in the world are aimedat able-bodied people – often with little orno thought given to people with disabili-ties. I really hope that wheelchair-boundpeople of all ages will make use of thisequipment. The swings are able to takesmall and larger chairs, catering for allages,” she adds.

MariaRademanen HermanKleinhansvan Twee.

Spring gou om diéTwee te ervaarLOUISA STEYL

@lousteyl

by Die Boer te bekom.

Powerlifter takes on the ‘big boys’

George Kattan from Durbanville got the green lights on his third and final attempt at 275kg inthe squat. PHOTO: IAN MORRIS

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

“It is time to jump into the lake andswim with the big boys.”These are the words of George

Kattan (25) who is currently the fourthstrongest powerlifter in the world.Last year at the Global Powerlifting Com-

mittee championship in Las Vegas, Georgecompeted with 15 of the strongest under-90kg lifters in the world.“It was my first world champs competing

against the very best. It was quite an experi-ence and the experience of competing withthose guys is extremely valuable to say theleast. You learn so much by just watchingthem. I was successful with a 280kg squat,180kg bench press and 290kg deadlift givingme a total of 750kg. It was a special momentI will treasure forever,” says George.

National championshipLast month Rhino Powerlifting Club host-

ed the national championship in Durbanwhere he bettered his total to 755kg. Georgewaseventually oustedbyGauteng lifter Jacode Waal who is the fifth strongest powerlift-er of all timeand the strongest SouthAfricanin the sport ever by a big margin. In powerlifting a formula is used using the

lifter’s bodyweight and weight lifted to de-termine who is “pound for the pound” the

strongest. Come Saturday 8 October, Kattanwill move up in weight and compete in theunder 100kg division. There is no denyingthathe cancompetewith thebiggerboys.Be-ing used to weighing around 89kg on compe-tition days, George currently pulls the scaleat 95kg.“My body is responding well and I feel I

am moving in the right direction. It is allabout improving your totals,” he says.

Not bodybuilding“You have to eat correctly, but not clean.

This is not body-building; here you eat toperform. My training is goingwell at themo-ment andatUnleash theBeasthostedbyRhi-no PowerliftingClub on 8October in Stellen-bosch I am on the right path of improvingon my totals yet again.”Rhino Powerlifting was founded by Ian

Morris back in January 2013. Morris, whoheld 21 world powerlifting titles in his day,is also the international liaison. In that sameyear the first competitionhad

five lifters. At the recent championship inDurban 75 competitors competed on nation-al level, indicating the sport is restoring theglory and numbers of yesteryear. The slogan of the club is “For the lifters,

by the lifters” where there are no politics, and decisions made are in the best interestof the lifters.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

His father described it aswinning the 100mand 200m sprint at the same event – some-thing that is a rare and near impossiblefeat. It is not often that one driver leads three

top karting championships at one time (SANational Maxterino 60cc, Mini Rok 60ccand Western Cape Maxterino 60cc) butCharl Michael Visser has certainly madethe karting world his own so far this year.Recently at the Idube go-kart nationals

in Durban, CharlMichael won two classes. The 12-year-old Kenridge Primary

learner won the Maxterino and Mini Rokclasses. To add to that, hewas also awardedwith the Driver of the Day trophy.“I am extremely proud of Charl Michael.

He is very committed and gives his all. Ze-ferino (Zefry) Ngovene is his personal me-chanic and the two have a special bond. Ze-fry travels with us and always makes surethat the kart is set up for conditions,” saidhis father, Charl Visser.CharlMichael receives training fromthe

highly acclaimed and multiple world kart-ing champion Wesleigh Orr who makessure his progress is well monitored andcarefully managed.Racing forRKT (RoosKart Team) in a Za-

nardi, Charl Michael has his sights sethigh. “I am privileged to race on such ahigh level. Althoughwe are all very young, the level of competition is really tough.“A lot of creditmust go toZefrywhomust

listen to my complaints when I don’t feelthekart performing as it canor should, andhe always gets the job done. He most cer-tainly plays a huge role in my success,”

says Charl Michael. The next big event is another national

event in Vereeniging on Saturday 16 July.

“I am looking forward to Vereeniging, but even more so going to Italy for theWorld Rok Final in October. It will be a

dream come true if I can come home witha world title. We are hard at work to makethat dream a reality.”

It’s crunch time for theKyokushin-kankara-te juniors in the Western Province. With just a few tournaments remaining

for the year, each one will be seen as trialsto pick the best to compete at the KyokushinWorld Union Junior championship in De-cember, hosted by Bulgaria. On Saturday 6 August Western Province

Kyokushin-kan will host a novice tourna-ment at Kenridge Primary. The tournamentis open to all ages with the only restrictionbeing that competitors are within the firstthree years of practising the sport. This isto hone the new karateka for tournaments.

A week later, on Saturday 13 August, theLanga Sports Complex plays host to theWestern Province Unicity karate champion-ship. A big turnout is expected across all ageand weight groups. All full-contact groupswill take part and karateka can qualify forWP colours. The Bellville Velodrome will host the “big

daddy” on 10 September for the South Afri-can All Styles Junior tournament. Here thecream of the crop from all over the countrywill compete for top honours.A favourite amongst all karateka, the Len

BarnesMemorial tournamentwill beheld inDurban on Saturday 8 October.Shihan Hennie Bosman, who is the chair-

man of Kyokushin-kan Africa, will keep akeen eye onhis juniors for possible selectionto travel to Bulgaria.“We always compete well against the best

in the world. I am sure this year will be nodifferent. You can train for hours on end inthe dojo, but it is not the same as a tourna-ment. We will base our selection on theirtournament performances,” says Bosman. The karatekas use a form of martial arts

called Iken to help them prepare for upcom-ing tournaments. Iken has been around forcenturies and started in China. Iken is allabout developing strength and how to con-trol breathing. Correct technique plays a bigpart in being successful in this form.

The Welgemoed Kyokushin-kan dojo nowalso offers Iken classes on a Tuesday from19 July from18:00 to 19:00.One of themastersof this particular art, SonLiSensei fromChi-na, and who Bosman trains with every yearon his visits to Japan, asked him to start thefirst affiliated Iken school in Africa. Themovements are mostly circular and kind tothe joints.“Iken isverywell suited forpeople that did

karate and other martial arts before butwould like to do something softer as they be-comeolder anddonotwant to engage inhardsparring. I want to help everyone to becomeamore complete and healthier person,” saysBosman.

BLITSBOKKE: POWELL SAL MOET KOPKRAP OOR WIE SPAN HAAL

Cheslin Kolbe, Seabelo Senatla, Justin Ge-

Ek het rugbybegin speel by Tygerberg-rugbyklub in Ra-

Enveralwagdaar opDurbanville-Bell-ville ’n besonder belangrike kragmeting.

naweek helderder skyn wanneer dieKraaie gasheer speel vir Pniël Villagersen Goodwood besoek gaan aflê by dieklub Hamlets.
