Basson doesn’t respond to invites, and he ig- nores our mails and phone calls,” says resi- dent and neighbourhood watch chairperson Grant Ferreira. Basson says there is no need for him to at- tend meetings or respond to invites because he is no longer the ward councillor for Rich- wood. According to him Carstens should be tak- ing it upon herself to ensure the suburb doesn’t feel unloved. “If I were Carstens I would make sure the residents of Richwood know my name and vote for me in the coming elections,” says Basson. On why he didn’t communicate this per- ceived change in councillors to the suburb he says it is Carstens’s duty to ensure aware- ness. Carstens, on the other hand, says there is absolutely no truth in Basson’s claim that Richwood now falls under her ward. “It is absolutely incorrect. Basson is the councillor of ward 105 and Richwood falls under ward 105. This will be the case up until 3 August,” she insists. Basson will apparently no longer stand as councillor come the elections and Richwood will fall under a newly created ward that will consist of suburbs such as Burgundy Estate and Plattekloof. This will apparently be known as ward 1. “We cannot reveal the exact boundaries at this stage. It is up to the demarcation board,” says Carstens. Ferreira first heard of this “new ward” at a recent meeting between a neighbouring suburb’s community and Carstens. He wanted to know why no-one has com- municated this to the residents of Richwood, who have been left in limbo for longer than he cared to know. Last night, after TygerBurger was printed, his call for communication was heeded in a public meeting between a City of Cape Town representative and the Richwood communi- ty. It is expected that residents will be made aware of the new ward demarcation. V To page 2.

    FROM PAGE 1

But with the elections fast approaching, a

lot will have to be done to put residents at

    ease.

    While councillors bicker among them-

    selves, the already exasperated Ferreira

says the Democratic Alliance has forgotten

    about Richwood.

For the last year and a half the DA as a

whole simply doesnt think Richwood has a

right to anything, he fumes, adding that

    even before Bassons apparent misunder-

    standing of his responsibilities towards

Richwood, Basson was perceived as an ab-

sent councillor who never really cared

about them or attended their meetings.

Basson responds by saying: When I in-

herited Richwood, it was a forgotten sub-

urb, but we cleaned up the parks, communi-

catedwith the residents, built speed humps,

and retro-fitted the streetlights, to name but

    a few things.

It is not true that the City doesnt care

about the suburb. And I can assure them

that neither the Economic Freedom Front

nor the African National Congress have

    put a foot there.

According to him it is a good thing that

Richwood will fall under a new ward after

the elections, because it was always going

to be challenging to include it in ward 105,

    which includes Philadelphia, Joosten-

    bergvlakte, Fisantekraal and Malmesbury

    farms.

Carstens agrees with Basson that this

ward structure was never going to work,

and shes glad its going to change.

Basson continues: Every ward gets allo-

cated a R700 000 budget. Its easy to spend

that money in Carstenss ward 5, which in-

    cludes Edgemead and Bothasig. Everything

is already in place. You can get really crea-

tive in that ward, but not in 105 with Fisan-

    tekraal.

Ferreira concedes that Basson has a diffi-

    cult ward.

He says this simply placesmore emphasis

    on spendingwhat littlemoney there iswise-

    ly.

Our parks were upgraded for R70 000

parks nobody really uses. There are more

pressing needs in the suburb, such as the

roads! The street lights were replaced, but

the trees are still concealing it. And then

there is the pressing need to address the N7

illegal pedestrian crossing issue. When will

something finally be done about this? Rich-

wood has been fighting for more than 14

years to get authorities to do something

about it. Every day 1400 people cross the N7

    between Dunoon and Richwood every

    day!

Basson says theN7 isnt the Citys respon-

sibility, since it is a national road.

All of the above indicate that the new

councillor, whoever it is going to be, will

    have their hands full.

    ie Panorama-, Welgelegen- en Platte-

kloofbuurtwag (PWP) is n paar tre

nader aan hul droom om nommer-

plaatherkenningskameras in die area op te

    rig.

Al wat hulle nou nodig het, is R74 000 van

    die totale installasiekoste van ongeveer

R250 000 vir die eerste fase.

Die gemeenskap het klaar n groot hoe-

veelheid geld geskenk of belowe hulle sal n

    skenking aan die buurtwag maak.

In die eerste fase sal daar ondermeer drie

kameras opgerig word wat deur die Stad

    Kaapstad geskenk is. Toepaslike rekenaar-

sagteware en n databasis sal aangeskaf

    word.

Volgens Hannes Rudman, een van die

projekbestuurslede, is die eerste fase die

    duurste.

    Daarna sal meer kameras aangekoop

word met geld wat hopelik uit die gemeen-

    skap sal kom.

Die totale koste van die projek sal onge-

    veer R1,3 miljoen wees.

Ons glo meer inwoners sal bydraes le-

wer sodra die eerste kameras genstalleer

    is, s Rudman.

Volgens hom is dit noodsaaklik dat die

PWP-area een stap voor misdadigers moet

    bly.

Ander areas wat al hierdie soort kame-

ras genstalleer het, het n groot afname in

misdaad beleef. In een area het die misdaad

met tot 80% gedaal. Ons is besorgd oor die

veiligheid van ons area, want daar is wel

n toename in misdaad hier. Misdadigers

identifiseer sagte teikens, en as ons nie

hierdie kameras installeer nie, sal ons n

    sagte teiken bly, verduidelik hy.

neel voordat hulle byvoorbeeld by n huis

    inbreek.

Rudman s kriminele fynkam n gebied

versigtig en besluit dan waar hulle gaan

    toeslaan.

is. Vrydagaand was daar sommer drie van

    hierdie voorvalle, s hy.

Volgens hom sal hierdie kriminele twee

keer dink as die area gemonitor word deur

    die kameras.

V Indien jy diewaarde sien vanhierdie soort kameras

en nog nie n bydrae gemaak het nie, kan jy na

www.pwpnw.co.za gaan vir inligting oor hoe om te

    werk te gaan.

Hy is verlede week in die Good-

    wood-landdroshof skuldig bevind

    op n aanklag van strafregtelike

    persoonlikheidskending nadat

    hy haar n k***, n bobbejaan en

    n f*** b*** genoem het.

Buiten die R8 000, is Allan ook

    gevonnis tot nege maande kor-

    rektiewe toesig, wat ses maande

    van huisarres insluit. Allan sal

    ook vir nege maande gemeen-

    skapsdiens by die Parow-polisie-

kantoor moet doen in die vorm

    van skoonmaak- en instandhou-

    dingswerk. Laastens sal hy ook

    opsyeiekoste nkursus inwoede-

    beheer moet ondergaan.

    Allan het verlede November na

    Linos TuckShop inPinelands ge-

gaan en gevra vir bystand om die

Lotto te speel. Die slagoffer was

glo besig om die yskas skoon te

maak. Sy het vir Allan gevra om

n bietjie te wag. Dit was toe dat

Allan sy humeur verloor en haar

    beledig het. Volgens Sean Lea,

    landdros, was die versoeking

groot omAllan tronk toe te stuur.

As from next year, the oldest pre-primary

school in Edgemead (established 1977) will

    be offering full-day facilities.

According to the chairperson of the

    Edgemead Pre-primary Schools Associa-

tion (EPPSA), Chantelle Rodinis, the need

for full-day care has increased tremendous-

ly over the past few years.

Established in 1977, the school has ser-

viced the area with an outstanding half-day

academic programme, but since times are

changing and more families are consisting

    of twoworkingparents, theneed for full-day

care has increased to the point where it has

become necessary for us to accommodate

    the demand.

As from January 2017, parents will have

two choices: they can either enrol their chil-

dren for half the day or have them taken

care of for the full day.

The half-day children will start their day

at 08:00 at their respective campuses and en-

joy a normal academic day until 12:45.

Those signed up for any extramural activi-

ties can be collected at 13:30.

The full-day children will start their day

from 07:00 at their respective campuses. At

the end of the academic day, the full-dayAn-

ton Anreith Campus children will be trans-

ported to the Denison Way Campus, where

    the afternoon programme will commence

    and run until 17:45.

The full-day children will have access to

    a structured holiday programmeduring the

April, July and October school holidays.

Holiday care will not be available during

the three weeks from 15 December.

Spaces are limited and will be booked on

    a first come/first served basis.

mental organisation Read to Rise will be

there to read to the children today

    (Wednesday) and Tygerberg Nature Re-

serve will run a three-day programme

    ANDR BAKKES

    @andrebakkes

    I

n the sparsely populated Karoo, there is

an undeniable lack of fundraising oppor-

    tunities for organisations depending on

    it.

The need for such an organisations inter-

    vention is nonetheless desperate.

    The Karoo Animal Protection Centre

helps animals in need, but who helps the

    centre?

The charity shop on Voortrekker Road,

run by volunteer Gloria Pitlo, answered

their call and now she sends her own cry

for help to the residents of Parow, Bellville,

    Goodwood and beyond.

But its very much a case of quid pro quo

    with something for something exchanged

on a daily basis. Every time you buy some-

thing at this second-hand shop, a large part

of the proceeds go straight to the Karoo.

    TheCharityBargainShop,which sells do-

nated secondhand goods, has been operat-

ing at the premises for a year and a half and

sends thousands of rands to the area on a

    monthly basis.

This gem of all charity shops is open ev-

ery Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 15:00

and is situated opposite the Shoprite Park

    in the Montana Building

I have always loved animals, and I will

do everything in my power to play a part in

assisting an organisation that I believe in,

    says Gloria.

But she cant do it alone. She depends on

her husband and her partner to help out

when needed. And of course the public.

It was unbelievably difficult to get the

word out there that we are operating a char-

ity shop from these premises, she recalls.

We even handed out flyers on the road

with hearts inviting the public to have a

cookie with us in the shop itself. Slowly but

surely people are becoming aware of what

we are doing here, the committed Gloria

    continues.

Creating awareness around the shop and

the shops cause is just part of a challenge,

however. She needs the public to buy and

donate goods, but hermost urgent call is for

someone to pay their monthly rent of ap-

    proximately R3500 someone who shares

Glorias commitment and who has the

means to make a difference ... someone that

wants to be the hero of animals they will

    never see.

Bothasig police officers got more than

they bargained for when they decided to

stop and search a heavily loaded bakkie.

Warrant Officer Johan Kotze and Con-

    stables Cello Mcutshenge and Andrew

Simmer from the Bothasig police were

on patrol on the N7 in the direction of

Cape Town recently when they noticed

a heavily laden silver Colt bakkie. As

there has been successes with abalone

busts, they decided to investigate as the

back of the vehicle was covered with tar-

    paulin.

When the officers indicated that the

driver should pull over, he ignored them

and sped away. The officers then chased

the vehicle from the N7 to the N1 and

eventually to the intersection of the R300

    and the Stellenbosch Arterial Road,

where the vehicle was pulled over.

As the occupants exited, one of them

    opened fire at police officers.Theofficers

managed to detain two of the three sus-

pects. When the bakkie was searched,

they didnt find abalone, but approxi-

mately a ton of copper cable which was

    identified as Eskom overhead cables.

Both suspects were arrested and de-

tained at the Kuils River police station

on charges of attemptedmurder and pos-

    session of presumed stolen property.

    Lieutenant-Colonel Patrick Jacobs

    praised themembers for their tenacious-

ness in this incident by not letting the

suspects escape and their successful ar-

    rests.

    Police chase copper cable thieves

    A

    n on-duty policeman from Bothasig

caught a suspect who grabbed a wom-

    ans phone.

Warrant Officer Dean Newman was fin-

ishing shopping at DeGrendel Centre when

he heard someone shout for help.

As he left the store he heard a female

shout for assistance and immediately re-

sponded. The shocked female told him that

a suspect had grabbed her cellphone while

she was waiting in her vehicle. She pointed

out the suspectwhowas running away from

    the scene.

    Newman immediately gave chase and

caught upwith the suspect in a nearby open

field. He arrested the suspect, a 26-year-old

resident from Dunoon, on a case of robbery

and could also hand back the owners phone

which was found in possession of the sus-

    pect.

    Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel

Patrick Jacobs praised Newman for his ac-

tions and says he is proud to be associated

and have an officer of Newmans calibre on

    his staff.

According to the ever smiling Newman

he was very glad to be of service and able

    to return the complainants phone.

The Lions Club De Grendel recently held an

induction dinner at the Parow Golf Club

where the efforts of Lion Fatima Kotze were

    praised.

    During the function two long-serving

memberswere also greeted as they resigned.

tive members of the club for 42 years.

    Says spokespersonMikeWood: Itwill not

be a goodbye as they intend keeping in touch

and volunteering when available. As char-

ter members of the De Grendel Club they

helped planned the clubs activities and its

growth over the years and will be sorely

missed by the club members. We wish them

good health and may they enjoy their free

    time.

    Meanwhile,Kotze receiveda commemora-

tive plaque as thanks for her outstanding

    contributions to service and fundraising

    projects of the club.

he worlds largest floating book fair,

the MV Logos Hope, docked in Cape

Town harbour last Thursday just in

time for the school holiday and will be open

for visitors daily until Monday 11 July.

With over 5000 book titles at affordable

    prices covering science, hobbies, cooking,

    arts, travel, languages, religion, medicine

you name it there is something for every-

    one.

In addition there is a visitors deck to ex-

plore with some interactive displays and

    various on-board events.

The Logos Hope, owned by GBA Ships, a

    German registered non-profit organisation,

sails across the globe with the purpose of

bringing Knowledge, Help and Hope to

    the nations of the world.

Part of their vision is to promote peace by

    embracing diversity, and as Capetonian

NeilMeiring can attest, it can be a challenge

when you are part of a crew of 400 members

    from over 50 different nations.

After 16 months on board, the former car

mechanic from Kensington says its the

best experience he has ever had.

Neil felt led by the Lord to quit his job,

not sure what the next step would be. Soon

afterwards he heard about the Logos Hope

through an OM Ministries outreach at the

    Strewers church in Kensington.

I didnt want to do it. I tried everything

to get out of it, but it was like the Lord kept

telling me this is what I should do.

The crew and staff are all non-salaried

volunteers, many working in their profes-

sional capacity. Neil started out in the gal-

ley and worked his way to the engine room.

Since the 1970s the fleet of GBA ships has

been welcomed in over 500 ports in more

than 160 countries as the ship provides good

    educational literature and promotes unity

    in diversity.

V The Logos Hope is at Jetty 2 at the V&A Water-

front until Monday 11 July. Opening hours are from

14:00 to 21:30 Sunday to Tuesday, and from 10:00

to 21:30 Wednesday to Saturday. Entrance is R5 for

adults, and free for pensioners and children under

    12 (accompanied by a parent).

Top 200: Six learners from Panorama Primary School competed in the annual Western

    Two constables from Bothasig police

were recently the cause of turning a

good Monday into a bad Monday for

    a resident of Mowbray.

    Constables Sello Mcutshenge and

Andrew Simmers were on patrol in

    thevicinity ofRichwoodonOldTyger-

valleyRoadwhen they drove past a ve-

hicle which was parked next to the

    road with the driver inside.

The officers decided to turn around

and offer their assistance as they

thought that the vehicle might have

    broken down.

    The officers approached the vehicle,

but noticed that the driver was very

nervous which gave them the idea

that something was amiss. They then

decided to search the vehicle but also

noticed that the driver had something

in his clenched hand. When they re-

quested to see what it was, they were

presented with 12 small bags which

    contained Cat.

The search of the vehicle came up

empty and the driver was arrested for

possession of drugs and his motor ve-

    hicle seized.

    The suspect, a 49-year-old resident

    fromMowbray, was detained and will

    soon appear in court.

    Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Jacobs

praised the officers for their vigilance

    pastor fromParow is standing trial

    for allegedly running a Ponzi

    scheme and scamming approxi-

    mately 2000 people.

The director of Platinum Forex Group

(PFG), ColinDavids (48), was released on

R100 000 bail by the Bellville Magis-

trates Court last week Wednesday (22

June) following his arrest by the Hawks

earlier on the day on charges of contra-

vening the FAIS Act and the Banks Act.

    Spokesperson for the Directorate for

    Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks),

    Captain Lloyd Ramovha, elaborates:

PFG is not an authorised financial pro-

vider as it is not registered with the Fi-

    nancial Services Board, and further-

more, they are not authorised to take

bank deposits as they are not a bank.

Hence PFG and Davids are charged in

terms of contravention of the FAIS Act

as well as the Banks Act.

    Above average returns

    Davidss investors were mainly gov-

ernment employees who had retired or

    resigned from the service.

Ramovha adds there are many people

who had retired and/or resigned from

their work after many years of hard toi-

ling that also invested in PFG.

Investors were told that PFG was do-

ing successful trading on the Forex mar-

kets and they have the ability to make

    above average returns on investments.

A Ponzi scheme is defined by Google

as a form of fraud in which belief in the

success of a non-existent enterprise is

fostered by the payment of quick returns

to the first investors frommoney invest-

    ed by later investors.

In July 2015 Platinum Forex Groups

R100 million worth of assets were frozen

on the order of the Western Cape High

Court following the national director of

    public prosecutions application for a

preservation order in terms of the Pre-

    vention of Organised Crime Act.

Davidss case has been postponed to 18

January 2017 to allow for further investi-

    gation.

    Ramovha continues: We cannot take

all the credit. This investigation was

    done in collaboration with Advocate

JannieKnipe, who is assigned to the case

as prosecutor. He is attached to the Spe-

    cialisedCommercialCrimeCourt. There

are other stakeholders which we do not

want to mention at this stage, but whose

    assistance was critical. Careful analysis

of documentation was also very impor-

    tant to us, he says.

The pain experienced by the inves-

tors was very apparent when we started

tomake enquiries and they sawus as the

ones causing the discomfort. This has

vastly improved since the arrest of Colin

    Davids.

Members of the public who have been

victims of the PFG are urged to come for-

ward and contact the investigating offi-

    cer, Lieutenant-Colonel Jerome Harden-

berg, on 021 918 3354 or email Harden-

    [email protected].

    Hawks seek statements

Ramovha says they are looking for

    people willing to make statements.

In thiswaywe are able to get a clearer

picture of the information we are seek-

ing. Even though the law allows us to

subpoena people to come to court to pro-

vide us with the evidence we need, we do

not want to go this route, he concludes.

Davids is a pastor at theNewDirection

    Grace Ministries in Parow.

In July Davids wrote on PFGs Face-

book page: I would like to vehemently

deny all allegations that have been lev-

elled against me and my company. I fur-

ther want to reiterate that all allegations

    are baseless and unsubstantiated.

In August that year he wrote: Today

    our auditors and accounting firmproved

from source records, bank records and

    trade statements thatPFG tradesprofita-

bly, that we are not a Ponzi scheme, that

none of our clients lost money, that all

our funds are safe with our bankers and

brokers. That we have so much money

that we should be a bank.

In September that year hewrote: ... fi-

nancial statements and trade records on-

ly prove that we are running a respecta-

ble and profitable trading business, that

despite losses and draw downs, our trad-

    ing ultimately is very successful.

In a Fin24 article from 2015 he said:

Some say where there is smoke, there

is fire, but beware of malicious people

who start a fire to try and burn your

    house down.

Davids did not respond to emails or a

    message on Facebook requesting his

    comment. PFGs telephone number still

    remains engaged and the companys

website is down. At the time of going to

    press New Direction Grace Ministries

could also not be reached for comment.

y wil net almal tot bekering bring.

    S s Henry Pike, wenner van 2014

se Gospel Talent Search en voltydse

    pastoor by die De Bron-kerk.

Of ek nou sing

of preek. Solank die boodskap net diemense

    bereik, vertel hy.

Henryhet n paarmaande gelede sy eerste

album vrygestel, wat deel was van sy prys-

    pakket asGospelTalent Search-wenner.Die

    kompetisie is aangebied deur Tygerberg

    104fm, TygerBurger en Traxtudio.

Hyt die kompetisie in Augustus 2014 ge-

wen en teen Desember daardie jaar was al

    die liedjies klaar geskryf.

    So tussendeur die bedienings, beradings

en optredes het hulle die liedjies stuk-stuk

    in 2015 opgeneem by Traxtudio.

    Meeste vandie liedjies is preke,watWar-

ren Elliott mooi verwerk het. Ons het die

kerngedagtes van die preke gevat en n me-

    lodie bygesit.

Dis n inspirerende, eerlike albumdi, net

    wordwaarhyook in 2000

    gematrikuleer het. Hy

    was goed in sport, veral

    gholf, maar ook n tipie-

    se rebelse tiener. Ironies

    genoeg was sy bynaam

    op skool Pastoor.

In my hart het ek ge-

    weet ekt n roeping in

    die lewe, vertel Henry,

    maar vir lank het hy

    daardie roeping onder-

    druk en aan die skadu-

    kant van die lewe rond-

    beweeg die kant waar

    drank en dwelms hoogty

    gevier het.

    Hyt n skool op die

    myne begin werk enwas

    op twintig die jongste

    voorman by n myn in

    die Noord-Kaap. Hyt

    hard gewerk maar ook

    baie hard gespeel en

    baie hard baklei.

    Dis toe dat Tannie Lil-

    lemore, n sendeling, sy

    pad op Northam naby

Rustenburg kruis. Syt daarheen getrek in

opdrag van dieHere. Syt homnie geoordeel

nie, net baie met hom gesels. Oor dieWoord

en oor Jesus. Dis sy wat hom tot bekering

    gebring het.

Hy was besope en vol dwelms toe Tan-

nie Lillemore een aandmet homgepraat het

en vir hom ges het die Here het n planmet

hom. Terwyl sy gepraat het, het ek skielik

nugter geraak en n encounter met God ge-

had. Ek was dadelik sober en by my ver-

    Hatfield-opleidingsentrum in Pretoria afge-

laai het. Hy is daar as pastoor opgelei, en

het sy vrou, Justine, wat ook teologie stu-

    deer het, daar ontmoet.

Hyt Tannie Lillemore nooit weer gesien

    nie.

Vandag is Henry n geliefde pa, skoon-

seun, pastoor en vriend ... en ook n talent-

    volle sanger.

Sy debuutalbum is beskikbaar by alle

CUM-boekwinkels of by die De Bron-kerk.

Dit kan ook digitaal afgelaai word by

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Teach young

    ones to

    fall in love

I sat upright with my legs dangling over

the edge of the seat, my tiny hands

fidgeted in anticipation. The lights went

down, the curtains opened, the action

started and I was in love.

I must have been about six or seven

years old when my Oumie took me to see

my first theatre production. In those days

options were limited, but every school

holiday my gran would drive me off to

The Baxter Theatre to see the latest

    childrens piece.

It was the beginning of a long and very

    beneficial love affair.

You see, my love of theatre opened a

    whole new world to me.

    I have travelled to prohibition-era

American prison cells in Chicago, to

Paris with Phantom of the Opera, to

exotic Africa with Postcard from Morocco,

    experienced Russian folklore with Swan

Lake and 15th Century England with

    Shakespeares Richard III.

    The theatre

    unlocked my

    imagination and

    introduced me to a

    world of fantasy

    that allowed me to

    experience stories,

    music and beautiful

    imagery that would

    often stay with me

    long after I left the

    venue.

    But, sometimes

    when I speak to

    people, I realise

    that many still see

the theatre as an exclusive experience,

despite the fact that the vibrant arts

culture in Cape Town lends itself to far

    more inclusivity than ever before.

This winter school holiday, for exam-

ple, sees a great number of childrens

theatre productions on offer around Cape

    Town.

Then theres all the community theatre

initiatives going on around the northern

suburbs from the Milnerton Players to

    the youth-driven Project 021.

And, if theatre isnt your thing, the

    stand-up comedy and magic industries

    are both on the rise.

Add the huge number of live music

    events in TygerBurgers weekly Whats

On diary and Capetonians really are

spoilt for choice when it comes to

    entertainment even during the tradi-

    tionally quiet winter months.

A wise producer once told me that

audiences need to be developed. We need

to expose young audiences to the stage in

    order to cultivate theatre-going adults.

So, why not take a child to the theatre

this holiday? You might just prompt a

    life-long love affair. Louisa Steyl

    Peter Smulik puts two

    questions concerning the

    operation of nuclear power

    stations (Ignorance over

    nuclear tech, TB, 22 June).

    One, insurance cover in

the event of a release of

    nuclear particles due to an

    uncontrolled event, accident,

or an operating error due to

    staff incompetence or con-

    struction errors.

    At Chernobyl it was staff

    doing procedures in an

    unsafe reactor, and at

    Winscale, sensors wrongly

    positioned, resulting in a fire

    in the graphite reactor core.

That type of fire in graph-

    ite becomes self sustaining.

    The Japanese event was

    caused by a natural event,

    which caused the flooding of

    the cooling pump emergency

    diesel generators, as the

    normal power for them had

    been lost with the destruc-

    tion of the normal grid

    supplied by turbo-alternators.

    With regard to the insur-

ance for such an event, and

    claims by the nearby and

    affected residents, he should

    attend the Public Safety

    Information Forum, which

    will supply him with the

    information required.

    These he can extend to

    cover the demolition of the

    power plant, when its useful

    life has finally expired. He

    can also request for special-

    ist speakers to lecture on

    such subjects. If Eskom can

    find such a willing person,

    then he can be asked.

    What he should bear in

mind, is that he should be

    more afraid of what is

    happening to our food than

    from nuclear waste (a

    personal comment!).

I thought I might comment on

the new fence that is being

put up for the parking lot in

    front of the Durbanville

    municipal building.

While it is an eye sore, it

    seems necessary as my car

    was tampered with last week

when I parked it there for an

    hour. The door lock was

    forced but luckily not opened.

It is a shame that a large

fence now has to be built to

keep crime out of the lot, but

I appreciate the effort made to

make it a safer place to park.

    ANDRE CRAYE

    Goedemoed

    Its an eyesore, but

    much appreciated

three. At the turn of the

    century 1800s to 1900s the

    world wide cancer incidence

was one person in every one

hundred and fifty. Now it is

    one in five. Why?

    Traces of the active chemi-

cal in the herbicide Round Up

are now being found in the

    cotton wool used in female

    hygiene products, made of

    cotton from genetically

    modified cotton plants.

    Perhaps the human seed

    should be genetically modified

to accept Round Up and the

    insecticide BT?

    This genetic modifying of

plant material is not done to

    improve the nutritional value

of the plant, but to make it

    immune to the application of

    definitive herbicides or

    insecticides. The insecticide

BT is also put into the genetic

make-up of the plant. We, the

    populus, are pursuaded to eat

    this evilly contrived junk in

    the interests of worldwide

    food sustainability. Great

    lobbying phrase used on

    governments ...

    We have already had DDT,

    Thalidymide, and various

    other evil chemicals banned.

    Some, although banned, are

    still being used!

    It seems we are being

    committed to a chemical

death and not a nuclear one!

    Nuclear waste degenerates,

    but hard chemicals do not!

    The pebble bed reactor

    burned up nuclear waste as

does the latest version of the

    nuclear salt reactor. Both are

    1950s technology. Google

    Trans Atomic Power for the

    latest design of the nuclear

    salt reactor.

The PSIF is set up for the

    residents in the 5km and

    16km evacuation zones. But

    outsiders are more than

    welcome.

We have had all sorts of

    interesting visitors, local

    residents, to an ex-nuclear

    submarine nuclear engineer,

to me, who had been involved

    in the first nuclear power

albeit in a nut and bolt

    tightening capacity.

lies as well as organisations in the northern

    suburbs.

    C

apetonians will soon get a chance to

    seeTheVoice SA starGavinEdwards

    in the flesh.

    With his inspirational message, Gavin,

the runner-up of the national singing com-

petition, has been chosen to join some of

South Africas top Christian singers on

    this years Gospel Skouspel stage.

Hell be joining Juanita du Plessis, Elvis

    Blue, JoeNiemand, Retief Burger andCor-

lea among others at the GrandWest Grand

Arena on Saturday 3 September for radio

station Tygerberg 104fms tenth and big-

    gest gospel spectacular.

Gavin, who used to live in Durbanville,

says he jumped at the opportunity when

he was invited to perform at the show.

Im very religious and my mom has

been in theministry formywhole life, he

says, adding: It would be amazing to be

given the chance to standup thereand sing

    for God and everyone.

While Gavin is currently riding The

Voice SAwave, hes no stranger tomusical

success and his road to the competition

    was a winding one.

When he first spoke to TygerBurger in

    2012, hewas visiting SouthAfrica between

working with his band Sunshine State in

    Australia. Thiswas after a chancemeeting

with Brain McFadden from Westlife saw

Gavin moving to Ireland for nine years

    and later travelling theworld toworkwith

songwiters such as Billy Mann, who

writes for Pink and Phil Thornalley, the

    writer of Natalie Imbruglias Torn.

He decided tomove back to SouthAfrica

permanently soon after meeting his wife

    while here for a holiday.

I was away for years and just couldnt

    be away from family anymore.

Since then hes been busy with cover

shows in Johannesburg where the couple

have made their home. He also took the

seventh place in the X Factor SA competi-

    tion in 2014.

In-between all of this, Gavin was fight-

ing a personal battle though. The singer

and songwriter has been open about his

    struggle with alcohol dependency since

the start of The Voice SA.

When it started to affect my mood on

stage and just mood in general, I knew it

was time [to change] because I love mu-

sic, Gavin explains. I wanted to take

back control of my career and voice and

moods and alcohol were just getting in the

    way of that.

He says, in the end, it was his desire to

sing and play music that switched off his

    urge for alcohol.

I still deal with some anxiety and stage

fright, he says jokingly, but the point is

to face these things sober and overcome

them instead of having a drink to avoid it

    or run from it.

Gavin decided to enter The Voice SA aft-

er watching an overseas version of the

show. I just knew it was a show that gave

artists or talent the ability and platform to

showcase who they are as an artist.

He says the competition, which sees con-

testants working with a mentor, also nur-

tures talent and teaches artists about the

business side of the entertainment indus-

    try.

    What an unforgettable, amazing learn-

ing experience. Iwill tell any singer I know

that if you want to learn, grow and be tak-

en seriously, to enter itll change your

    life.

Gavin has been busy in studio working

on a single due to be released in July. He

also plans to start work on a full album,

but first Gavin and his wife are preparing

to welcome their baby boy soon.

Fans will be able to see him in action at

the Gospel Skouspel 2016 on Saturday

3 September, which is pegged to be the big-

gest gospel event of the year.

V Tickets for the Gospel Skouspel 2016 are availa-

ble from www.itickets.co.za. Visit the Gospel

Skouspel Facebook page for the full concert line-

    up and more information.

You heard it here first: Gavin Edwards will be
