Ek probeer net die beste vir my werkersdoen. Al waarmee hulle by die werk moetopdaag, is ’n skoon liggaam. Hul uniformsword op my koste skoongemaak.

The Bothasig Girl Guides and Rangersthis past Saturday joined the Merri-man Lions from Goodwood and the

Bothasig police in an environmentalproject called Bag-a-Burger.The fifteenGuides andRangerswere each

handed a black bag and protective gloves byWarrantOfficer JacquesMostert andKevinLeach and briefed on their mission: pick uplitter.According to Mostert a police van was on

hand to help move the bags filled with rub-bish. “The Guides and Rangers left the po-lice station on a designated route and start-ed cleaning up the environment. They wereaccompanied by Reservist Constable JohanPrinsloo. While this was taking place,Leach and I braaied the hamburger pattiesand prepared the burgers which they verydeservedly worked for,” says Mostert. When everyone had a drink and a burger,

Mostert started talking to them about sub-stance abuse.“I was supported by two members from

theUCANrehabilitation centrewho sharedtheir experience regarding substance de-pendency and the impact on their lives aswell as the lives of their families. The ques-

tions raised by the audience were honestlyanswered and stern warnings issued by thetwo guest speakers that help should beasked instead of going down the addictionroute,” says Mostert.Dennis (not his real name) explained how

he got involved in drugs and the lengths hewould go to get hold of drugs, even if itmeant he had to steal from his mother to

support his habit. “I have been in rehab fora while and my mother had spoken to meonly a few weeks ago for the first time inthree years,” he says.Tanya Prinsloo, a Ranger guide, ex-

pressed everyone’s thanks to theMerrimanLions Club and Bothasig police for arrang-ing the project and inviting them to be partof it.

OldTokkie, one of two steamengines guard-ing the entrance to Intaka Island Eco-Cen-tre, was the subject of a profound love story. The other protagonist of this love story

wasOomJimvanRensburg, an enginedriv-er at the Douglas Colliery near Emahlahle-ni in Mpumalanga.

Oom Jim started working at the collieryin 1958. At the time the colliery had threesteam locomotives – two large ones to haulcoal from the mine to the nearest railwaystation atVandyksdrift and a small DouglasNo 3 engine to help shunt the trucks and oc-casionally to help nudge the larger engines

if they were battling to haulcoal trucks over the hill, says Lewellyn Janse vanRensburg, the third of OomJim’s four sons.He says the small engine

was lovingly called Tokko-los after the small Zulumythical figure Tokoloshebut toOomJim shewas justOld Tokkie.“Oom Jim loved steam

engines. He used to jokethat when hewent for bloodtests, the doctor had tosquirt out the first 10ml, asit was just steam.”Shortly before Oom Jim

retired in 1986, the mine re-tired Tokkolos by placing iton display in front of themine’s offices. “It was mydad’s honour to extinguishher last fire and fasten thebrake for the last time.”In a letter Oom Jimwrote

in 1991 to Peter Holz, thethen editor of MiningWorld, he spoke of his affec-

tion for Old Tokkie.“I love Old Tokkie ... If she could talk she

would say ‘I Love Oom Jim also because healways cleaned me till I looked like a lovelylady with a beautiful dress and shoes’.”Lewellyn said his dad’s wishes were to be

buried next to Old Tokkie.“Unfortunately the mining company de-

cided to use open cast mining in the areawhere I grew up, including Tokkolos’ primeposition in front of the mine’s offices. Tok-koloswas removed andwehadno ideawhathappened to her.”Oom Jim passed away on 14 September

1998, and was buried in Witbank.“The only thingwe could do to honour his

love for steam engines was to put a head-stone on his grave in the form of a steamengine’s chimney and steam dome.”He said they always wondered what had

happened to old Tokkolos.“Then, last year, I happened to watch

Kwêla onDSTVwithmywife and therewasa glimpse of oldTokkolos standing inCentu-ry City! After a bit of searching on the inter-net I found a site that confirmed this wasindeed Old Tokkolos.”Twoweeks ago Lewellyn and his younger

brother, Lionel, and their families travelledto Cape Town to visit Old Tokkie at Intaka.“It was very special and it is wonderful

to know that Old Tokkie, the proud old lady, finally has a special spotwhere she can givevisitors a glimpse into the very special rolethat steam engines played in our history.Oom Jim would have been very proud!”

Groot eerbewys vir IolaANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

Die “sagte, meevoelende en streng” sus-ter, Iola du Toit, het Vrydag op Inter-nasionale Verpleegstersdag ’n toeken-

ning by die Mediclinic Panorama ontvang.

Only one or two children in a thousand arediagnosed with apraxia, so what’s the fussabout?

Why should one know about this speechimpairment or read about last week Friday’sApraxia Awareness Day at Tygerberg Hos-pital School?

There are roughly 370 000 children underthe age of four years in Cape Town, whichmeans between 370 and 720 children need se-rious speech therapy.

Tardiness in diagnosis will make it thatmuch harder for the child to ever speak nor-mally.

They also need a school to attend, and op-tions are severely limited.

The Tygerberg Hospital School provideseducation to 22 grade Rs with apraxia, butafter this the parents are forced to be placedon a waiting list if their child need to attendTafelberg Remedial School or Jan KrielSchool.

The challenge for a parent lies in paying

thousands of rands every year to speechtherapists and the fees of a remedial school.

Where some will baulk under the strainof a challenge, others flourish.

When Deidre Warner from Parow first dis-covered that her child had apraxia, she wasshocked.

“Evan was two years and three months oldwhen we took him to see a doctor becauseof a chest infection. The paediatrician thentold us that Evan might be autistic becausehe clapped hands during the examinationand had no vocabulary. I was almost hysteri-cal.”

Before Deidre took Evan to the doctor, sheand her husband just thought their boy wasa little slow in developing his speech.

They thought it strange that he said “na-na” instead of “mama” and even strangerthat he later lost the ability to even say “na-na”.

Evan never said “brrrrmmmm” when heplayed with a toy car and never just babbled.

But the Warners never even knew some-thing like apraxia existed.

“We were told to go to a neurologist to find

out if Evan was autistic, and while we waitedmonths for an appointment we had to takeEvan to a speech therapist. One session of45 minutes cost R300,” she exclaims.

Apraxia alone does not reflect on a child’sintelligence.

According to mommyspeechtherapy.com,apraxia is a type of motor speech disorderthat affects the way the body is able to pro-duce speech.

“Motor speech disorders are neurologicalin nature, meaning a child’s brain has diffi-culty coordinating the different body partsneeded to produce speech – the tongue, lips, and lower jaw,” states the website.

Deidre says that most children with aprax-ia know exactly what they should be saying, but fail in the execution.

This often leads to frustration for thechild.

“We were later told that Evan was not au-tistic, but did indeed suffer from apraxia.Speech and occupational therapy cost us ahuge amount of money every week, but aftera lot of hard work we could soon hear thedifference,” she adds.

“At the end of the year Evan and I weredriving somewhere when he tried to get myattention. I looked at him and he said ‘I loveyou’! It was a huge moment for me,” laughsDeidre.

Deidre was lucky that Evan’s conditionwas diagnosed fairly early, so there was rap-id improvement.

While her son was overcoming the chal-lenge of speaking, Deidre and Lydia de Villi-ers “took on” the Western Cape EducationDepartment.

There was a lack of options when it cameto where children with apraxia can go.

Thanks to Deirdre and Lydia two grade Rclasses were opened at Tygerberg HospitalSchool.

Their persistence might also pave the waythat these children may simply be trans-ferred to Tafelberg or Jan Kriel School, andnot be placed on a waiting list.

This is, however, far from certain. In the meantime Deidre is trying to create

awareness of apraxia and hoping that otherchildren can be diagnosed before it becomesalmost impossible to rectify a child’s speechdisorder.V Go to Deidre’s website, the first on apraxia in SouthAfrica, at http://aarsa.co.za.

So what’s the fuss about apraxia?

You need to go away, but cannot leaveFluffy at home? Have no fear, becausethe Pet Sitter is near.

Theuns Schronen is the man to call whenthere is nobody else whowants or can take care ofyour pets.“Pets are like children to

people. Who would want toleave your child at homealone when you go awayfor an extended period oftime?” asks Theuns.Unfortunately the world

we live in is not always petfriendly and people areforced to leave their petsalone. And this is whereTheuns comes in.“I was retrenched in 2013

and saw a niche in themar-ket. If people take their petsto the kennels, the animalscome back traumatised. For me it is important thatthe animal remains in thehouse they are used to,”says Theuns, noting thathuman children would al-so not feel comfortable atother people’s homes. As part of his service, Theuns goes to the

house, feeds the animals, walks the dogs andeven administers medicine. “My clientstrust me in their homes. Some give me thespare keys and gate remotes so that I canwalk in out freely. I also take care of extraservices like taking out the mail and whatI call ‘poo management’. People love theiranimals, but they don’t always like cleaningup after them, so they appreciate it when Ido it. I will also turn on lights, make surenothing has been disturbed in the house and

there are no broken windows. These aresome great extras for people who are awayfrom their homes for long periods.”Theuns tells the story of howhe once came

to a house and there was a notice from themunicipality that the electricity was goingto be cut. “Unbeknown to the home owners

I called the municipalityand told them that thehome owners were out ofthe country and that theyhad to wait before they cutoff the electricity. Whenthe owners, they were verythankful. I like to walk theextra mile for my clients.Every day, afterwalking orfeeding animals, I will takepictures and send it to theowners. So involved am Ithat when a pet dies, I’ll beone of the first to know andI will grieve with the fami-ly.”A typical assignment, as

Theuns calls his jobs, starts with a “meet andgreet”. “I would go to theclients’ houses and meetwith the animals. I will letthemsmellme and get usedto me. If an animal acts ag-gressive towards me, I will

not take the assignment.”The assignments are not all fun and

games. “I was once looking after two dogs.I took the boerboel for awalk andhe sawoth-er dogs.He started to runafter the other dogsand draggedme along onmy stomach.Whenwe arrived home I tried to open the door andthe pitbull saw a gap and ran past me. I hadto rugby tackle the dog as he came past, allthe while holding on to the other,” laughsTheuns.V Any interesting stories in your area? Send an emailto [email protected].

Corpus Christi invited the kids ofBright Stars Safe House for a fun-filled day at the church hall, which

took place on Saturday 7 May.The day was filled with games and danc-

ing. A teenager said “it was very lekker”.“Usually at parties we would go sit down,

but not today. I also enjoyed decorating myown cupcake for Ouma.”Bright Stars Safe House in Kraaifontein

is a halfway house for kids who have beenabused or neglected by their parents. Formany of these kids Bright Stars is a wholenew experience where they receive a sec-ond chance at life.Bright Stars has given hope to kids who

never thought they had a chance.“Bright star is like a new experience for

all of us; it’s like a new beginning and itopensdoors forus,” saidoneof the children. The children cannot be named. The party was sponsored by a few mem-

is a loving, caring woman and put the chil-dren first .“To me it is a miracle to see when they

come in, they are broken, but in a fewmonths they change into children that canplay, because they get a second chance.”The volunteers from the church visit

Frustratedmotorists scratching for changeevery time they park kerbside in the CapeTown CBD, will now be able to pay withtheir bank cards. Parking marshals em-ployed by Street Parking Solutions nowhave hand-held point-of-sale (POS) devices.“These marshals are wearing badges in-

dicating that they can accept card pay-ments. The POS devices make it easier andmore convenient to pay for parking as mo-torists do not always have cash onhand andthenhave to search foranATMtowithdrawmoney,” says the City’s Mayco member fortransport, Brett Herron.

“I call it my cause album,” Auriol Hayssays of her upcoming release. The local singer will be officially

launching her aptly namedDreamingMusicat a secret location on Saturday 28 May andwith it, shehopes to give a voice to thosewhoneed it.While she’s very aware that the songs on

her new albummay not suit commercial ra-dio, Auriol says: “They come from a verydeep place and they aremeant to create a dif-ference.”One of the songs on the album, for exam-

ple, is “Come to Me”, which she wrote toraise awareness about “The Arctic 30”, agroup of Greenpeace activists and journal-istswhowere arrested for protesting againstoil drilling in the Arctic. She was invited to perform the song on a

Greenpeace boat last year when their Rain-bow Warrior was docked in Cape Town.Another of her songs, “Pray for Rain”, has

been used by the Dress Jozi Campaign, anorganisation that helps care for the home-less residents of Johannesburg. “That’s awonderful thing.”Then there’s her track “Help me Out”

which has been used by the South AfricanDepression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).“I like that themusic is beingusedbyorga-

nisations that want to create some kind ofchange.”Auriol says many fans refer to her previ-

ous album, Call it Love, as “a break-up al-bum”. “It was sad and beautiful,” she says, adding: “This album, I’d like to think, is somuch happier and bolder.”The music switches between blues, folk,

reggae with elements of many other genres, including what Auriol calls her “Bond in-spired song”. “Because I’m a storyteller, Itell the story in whichever way works best.”She’s also quick to point out that the fan-

tastic band behind her helped “bring every-thing to life”.Auriol is working with bassist André

Webb, who also acts as hermusical director, guitarist Jason De Laney, drummer JasonBeukes and keyboardist Yvan Potts, andwhen asked how she met them, she quips:“I’m blaming the gods on that one.”When she returned to Cape Town after

working in Johannesburg for three years,Auriol says a random person “out of thegoodness of his heart” connected her witha group. While André is the only survivingbandmember, the situation evolved into onewhere she now works with what she calls“an amazing bunch of musicians”.While many of them play for other artists,

Auriol says shealwaysworkswith the groupwhen formulating a song “so that it’s ourmusic and not my music”.“We always have a good time on stage.”Away from the stage, Auriol is also mov-

ing into the film industry, playing the roleof the “seer” in the local Sci-Fi series Spe-lonk. A song she released with CrimsonHouse frontman Riaan Smit, “Child Atone”,will also be featured in the postapocalypticpiece that exploreswhatmusic and languagewould sound like in 2044.Auriol is in the process of writing a book

which she is releasing in segments on herwebsite. “I am essentially writing to mygreat granddaughter about music and life,”she explains.“When I sit and write, I have a greater

understanding of what I do when I sing, sothat process has been very interesting.”Auriol says the chance towrite something

other than song lyrics gives her a chance todecompress and bemore conscious of her ac-tions.“Writing is a release,” she says, before

adding: “When I finally get to perform, I’mfree.”While music fans can already get a taste

of this freedom with Dreaming Musicwhichis already available on iTunes, Auriol en-courages listeners to keep an eye on her Fa-cebook page for the big reveal of the venuefor her launch.V For more information about Auriol Hays, a tasteof her music or to read segments from her book, visitauriolhays.co.za. LEWENSKIEKIE

We shouldnurture ournursesThey are our friends, our confidants, ourdoctors and our carers.

They come in our darkest hours andthey alleviate our pain and our loneli-ness.

Our heroes, our fathers and mothers, our teachers and our punching bags.

Society’s shame. The ridiculous salary of a nurse should

make us all sleep a little more uncomfort-ably at night.

You know those days when you feel asif something is wrong, but you can’t puta finger on it?

It’s probably the feeling of guilt. Many think a “thank you” is all that is

expected from us when a nurse tends to aloved one in hospital.

I’m obviously not a nurse, so I can’tspeak for them, but while I wouldappreciate a “thank you” as a nurse, itdoes not pay the rent.

“Dear landlord, I regret to inform youthat I don’t havethe cash to pay youthis month, but Ido have 18 234thank-yous.”

Nurses haveprotested beforeand they willagain. What theymost likely won’tdo is cause aninternational sceneby throwing bricksat police, burningbooks and destroy-ing property.

Of all the callsfor justice out there, the one that movesme the most is whispered by the poverty-stricken nurse.

The world is upside down.In far too many sectors those who work

hardest earn the least. So, how doessociety deal with this obvious injustice?

We give them a day, of course!World Teachers’ Day.International Firefighters Day.International Nurses Day!The latter was “celebrated” on Friday,

but really, if I were a nurse, a salaryincrease would have benefitted me more.

There is an argument that a nurse is anurse because it is his/her passion tohelp people. People will say nurses woulddo what they do for free, as long as theycan fulfil their calling. I can only laughat this line of “self-justification”, which isclearly born from guilt.

Nurses deserve so much more than aspecial day, more than a thank-you, andeven more than a substantial raise.

They deserve more than a short piecein a community newspaper.– André Bakkes

What happened was thatwhen whoever dug trenches tolay fibre optic cables, theyruptured one of the electriccables which supplies power toour two houses. The repair hadnot been done correctly andwhen the wet reached thecables, it caused a short.

The technicians who cameout on Sunday night andworked for two hours torestore our power were fantas-tic, to say the least. Plastic not the enemy – ‘we are’, says artistDESIREE RORKE

@dezzierorke

Plastic is inevitable. It’s not the enemy– we are.World renowned Belgian artist Will-

iamSweetlove reckons aworldwithout plas-tic is no longer possible.“The problem isn’t the plastic itself, but

the fact that people burn it and throw it intothe sea,” he says.He brings this conservation message

home in a whimsical yet compelling exhibi-tion of neo-pop sculptures, which opened atthe Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gar-den on Wednesday.Labelled “Water Wars”, the exhibition

tells the story of mankind’s war with water.

By 2025, one in three people will live withabsolute water scarcity, according to thefood and agriculture organisation of theUnited Nations.“Yet, the excesses of humanity are threat-

ening our natural resources,” he says.Sweetlove’s sculptures are made from re-

cycled plastic from landfills and transformordinary animals and objects into iconic fig-ures. His unique works of art have chal-lenged people to become environmentalthinkers for close to 50 years through morethan 600 exhibitions worldwide. It is not difficult to see why.The pieces are bold and playful, but defi-

nitely make you think. More than 60 red, blackandwhitepenguinspositionedor rath-er installed in the Vlei Garden, for example,

draw the attention to the impending short-age of clean drinking water.“They have water bottles tied to their

backs suggesting a survival measure, andface the mountain in an almost pleadingfashion – pleading for fresh water.”At the Old Dam, the Fisherman-hunter

sculpture speaks to our dwindling ocean re-sources. “In order for the fisherman to sur-vive, he eats less and therefore has shrunk. As there is no fish left in the ocean, he hasnow become a hunter.”In addition to his solo work sculpture,

Sweetlove has worked collaboratively withother artists for more than 20 years as amember of the CrackingArt Group, foundedin 1983 in northern Italy. Their collectivework calls attention to environmental and

social issues. One suchpoignant installationshows the plight of the turtles in Venice asthey try to escape the canals that keep themfrom reaching the ocean. The founder of theCapeTownArtAgency,

Dirk Durnez, who collaborated with Sweet-love and Sanbi (South African National Bio-diversity Institute) on the exhibition, saysthe exhibition aims to create a change ofmindset about conservation. The exhibitionwill be at Kirstenbosch un-

til 11 June, after which it will journeythrough South Africa, ending in Pretoria.Karl Stouthuysen, Belgian consul to Cape

Town, officiated the exhibition. He said initiatives like this stress the need

for ecological awareness. “Water is mostprecious for all creatures great and small.”

D .F. Malan se skokoorwin-ning oorHSTygerberg endiewegholsege van Bellville-

Suid oor J.G.

DFM behaal skoksege

The 2016 Western Cape Karting Championship ex-plodes back into action at Killarney after a two anda half month break on Saturday, with leading localracers keen to reassert their authority, as much astheir rivals will be out to stop those winning ways.Nowhere will the action be fiercer than in the high

school Rotax Junior Max 125s, where a full grid andperhaps a little unfinished business could make theaction all that much sweeter.WP champion Jason Coetzee (RKT Kosmic) will be

keen to extendhisCape championship advantage overnational series leader Sebastian Boyd (Boyd FreightKosmic) and the man Coetzee controversially tangledwith at the Killarney national, Dario Busi (AutomanBirel).

Never ignore Daniel Duminy (Kosmic) who is outto score his first Cape regional win, Andrew Rack-straw (Tony), Aidan Strydom (TurboTech CRG) andKosmic trio JP Hamman, Sam Lockhoff and SimonSimpson-Heath (SAKRA Kosmic) among that lot, andrest assured that this class will deliver extreme actionin each of its three heats. The smallest karters are the under eight cadet class

kids, the breeding ground of future race champions, and thereyoucanexpect the likes of JoaquindeOlivei-ra, Reza Levy (Jive), Paul Malcolm, Reese Koorzen,Joshua Smit and Ethan Stier to be among the leadingbunch.V Adult entry is R60 per adult. R20 for under16s and under12sare free.

SportGOLF: BELLVILLE AMATEUR MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW

Victorious

Bellville golfer Gerlou Roux retained his SA MidAmateurStroke Play Championship title at Silver Lakes CountryClub in Pretoria. PHOTO: ERNEST BLIGNAULT

Western Province’s Gerlou Rouxstaved off Shaun Stapleton fromCentral Gauteng to claim back-to-

back titles in the SA Mid-Amateur StrokePlay Championship recently.“I guess I got a jump on that old adage

that life begins at 40; if 39 is this good, Ican’twait to hit the forties,” jested theBell-ville golfer after he sealed a two-stroke vic-tory on eight under 280 with rounds of 68,73, 68 and 71 at Silver Lakes Country Clubin Pretoria.Roux swept to a four-shot triumph last

year, but this time around, the country’snumber one ranked mid-amateur said vic-tory tasted a whole lot sweeter.“It’s taken a few days to sink in, because

it was mentally a lot tougher to go the fulldistance this year,” said Roux.“When I set myself a goal to represent

South Africa on both the Open Amateurand Mid-Amateur circuits last year, Icouldn’t even describe the feeling when Iachieved it. But like most of the guys onthemid-amateur circuit, I hold downa full-time job and that had to take priority.“I came into the tournament knowing

that I have a target onmy back. It was real-ly tight at the top over the four rounds. Ikept my head down and got the job doneand that’swhy thiswin feels somuchmore

special.”Roux started the final round with a one-

stroke edge over Stapleton and a two-shotlead on Central Gauteng’s Ryan Dreyer.“I knew the last round would be tough,”

Roux said. “When you have three ex-Sun-shine Tour pros going head-to-head, it wasalways going to be an extreme test of pa-tience and willpower.”Rouxburst from theblockswith abirdie,

but short-sided himself at the second hole.“There is a tree right in themiddle of the

fairway at this par five,” he said. “I hit agood tee shot, but the ball just kept goingstraight and it finished up a few inchesfrom the trunk. My only option was topunch out, but I still had 210 metres to thepin. I took my medicine and moved on.”Rouxnotchedbirdies at sevenand 10 and

had a two shot lead on Stapleton when thepair reached the par four 17th.“I pulledmy tee shot in the rough,” Roux

said. “With the pin at the back of the islandgreen, I decided to lay up rather than gofor the pin. I hit a decent chip, but I missedthe par putt. Shaun nearly flew the green, but his ball stayed up. His chip landed twofeet from the hole and he holed the putt tosave par. Going to 18, my lead was cut toone and I was going to go all out. Shaunplayed first and hit his tee shot in the haz-

ard on the right. I knew he would struggleto save par, so I put the driver back inthe bag, took out a rescue and amore conservative approach. All I needed was a regula-tion five to win.”Roux parred the hole to

seal victory, Stapletonmade six for a 72 to finishsole second and Dreyerclosed with a 74 to takethird on 285.“I beat kids more

than half my age toreach the numberone spot in therankings and itwas a huge dealfor me when Ireached my goal torepresent South Africaon both circuits last year, butwhen you start knocking onthe door at 40, you have tomake sacrifices,” Roux said.“Now that I have back-

to-back wins, I’ve givenmyself a new goal for nextyear. I’mgoing to go for ahat-trick and thatgives everyguyon themid-amateur circuitthe goal to stop me.”
