lle sake het twee kante; sommige het

drie. Dt is die geval in Boston, waar

    daar onlangs wilde aantygings teen

die plaaslike buurtwag gemaak is, onder

meer oor die beweerde aanranding van ha-

    weloses.

gin kort nadat daar twee Saterdae gelede n

groep van sowat 72 straatbewoners van hul

    slaapplek voor die Bellville-polisiekantoor

verjaag is (Uit slaapplek verjaag,TB 17 Fe-

    bruarie).

    Neighbourhood Public Info&Updates-blad

is gemaak deur n Boston-inwoner, en bevat

    verskeie ernstigebewerings teendieBoston-

    buurtwagvoorsitter, Stephan Fourie.

hawelose vrou so ernstig sou aangerand het

    TygerBurgerhet hierdie aantygings en be-

weringe aan Fourie gestel. Hy het dit ten

    sterkste ontken.

nie so onskuldig is as wat hlle wil voorgee

    nie.

    pel word nie.

    MICHELLE LINNERT

    @linnertmb

    Y

ouwaited yourwhole life to buy aRot-

    tweiler puppy andwhenyou can final-

ly afford one, it gets parvovirus and

dies within two weeks after you bought it

    from the breeder.

This is the scenario involving a disgrun-

tled couple after they bought a puppy from

a breeder who charges R6000 per puppy.

The man got a 50% discount from the

breeder, his colleagues wife, and was able

to pick up the longed-for puppy within

weeks after its birth, and with only one

    more injection to go.

    However, the puppy almost immediately

    got gravely ill.

I had incurred costs from the vet when

I rushed my dog to the animal clinic in Ke-

nilworth after it had developed parvovirus,

but it was already too late. They said they

could try to help him, but chanceswere that

he wouldnt pull through, said the man,

who asked not to be named.

It would have cost him R15 000, he

said, to have the puppy treated, but he

and his wife decided against this and

to rather have the puppy euthanised,

as this was too steep and the puppys

odds to survive were so slim.

If they get this disease, its basical-

    ly over for them.

The man said when they collected

the puppy, the breeder said it was due

    for one last inoculation.

When we got there, we were told

the dog still needed its final vaccina-

tion. We only had the dog for two

weeks. The breeder failed to get the

    third injection.

After the dog died, the couple had

    a disagreementwith the breeder, who

they said refused to reimburse them, or al-

low them to have a new puppy.

The breeder told us the breed was very

susceptible to this virus and therewasnoth-

ing they could have done differently. Its al-

ways been a childhood dream of mine to

own a Rottweiler. I saved up to buy this

    one, he said.

TygerBurger put the question to the staff

at the Tygerberg Animal Hospital (TAH) of

what could have been done to save the pup-

py, and what others can do should they sus-

pect the virus in their own dog.

According to veterinarian Dr Ryan Nor-

rie, they see a lot of darker coloured dogs

    being infected with the parvovirus.

All dogs are susceptible to the virus.

Some dogs have a stronger immune system

    than others, he said.

According to him, prices for treatment

vary based on the treatment plan followed

and the number of days a puppy will stay

    in isolation ahighly sterilised roomwhere

the animal is kept separate from other pa-

    tients.

We find that extra love and lots of TLC

can make a difference to a scared and de-

    pressed fur baby,he says.

It is very important to have constant

monitoring as you just dont knowwith par-

    vovirus!

    Parvovirus a costly killer

Volgens

hom het di voorval reeds verlede jaar

    plaasgevind.

    bygevoeg.

    Die gewraakte Facebook-inskrywing is

    volgensTygerBurger se bronne binne 20mi-

    nute van die blad verwyder.

Baie belangrik, dit is ni die Boston-

buurtwag se Facebook-blad nie, het Fourie

bygevoeg.

is. Fourie meen daar is toe streng volgens

    protokol opgetree.

daar so gegons is, laat verlede jaar plaasge-

like maande gelede in 2015. Ek en my man

was self twee van die buurtwag-patrolleer-

ders wat di Saterdagaand op patrollie was

toe die haweloses verwyder is by die polisie-

kantoor, en kan met sekerheid getuig daar-

    van.

    Hennie Koekemoer, die Bellville-gemeen-

    skapspolisiringsvoorsitter, s alle buurt-

waglede word deur n streng gedragskode

gebind, en n dissiplinre proses om die

buurtwagstruktuur te suiwer van enige le-

    de wat hierdie gedragskode oortree.

Indien daar nie n formele klag by die po-

lisie gel is nie, sou ek nie enige waarde heg

ie voorval waarin n bekende inwo-

    ner van Durbanville Vrydag vroegog-

gend in sy huis in Vergesig, Durban-

ville tydens n huisrooftog geskiet is, het in-

    woners geskok gelaat.

Dit was moontlik die eerste voorval ng

    waarin iemand in nhuisrooftog inDurban-

ville geskiet is.

haas.

toe hy haar vermoedelik nie kon vind nie.

Die stuk hout is later in die slaapkamer ge-

vind.

plaasgrond grens. Hulle het te voet gevlug

    met twee Samsung-selfone n S5- en S6-

    selfoon.

Burger is verledeVrydag geopeer en is op

n ventilator in n koma gehou. Volgens

    probeer bybring.

    Volgens kol. TheoFisher van dieDurban-

ville-polisie wek die toename in huisroof-

togte kommer. Veral in woonbuurte wat

grens aan landelike gebiede aan die kant

vanDuNoon naby Table Viewwas daar die

afgelope twee, drie maande n toename in

huisrooftogte. Meer as vyf huisrooftogte is

die afgelope tweemaande in die woonbuur-

te Aurora, Vergesig en Oude Westhof aan-

gemeld. Ons het laas in 2013 so baie huis-

slaan. N verlede Vrydagoggend se voorval

het die polisie die gebiedmet n polisiehond

deursoek, maar die soektog is bemoeilik

deur ligte ren. Spoorsnyers het egter die

oggend omstreeks 10:00 afgekom op twee

vuurwapens nwindbuks en n .38 Special-

    rewolwer, klapmusse, handskoene, n

breekyster en n boutsnyer, wat onder die

grond begrawe was.

    A

    disgruntled Groenvallei resident

    complained bitterly about a neigh-

bour he says keeps up to 12 cars in his

own yard as well as on adjacent public

    ground.

The site of this discontent is at Kunene

and Midmar streets, where the resident

saidhehas lived formore than 30 years, and

the offending neighbour about four years.

The resident said he has complained to

all and sundry about this neighbour.

Its been going on for years. That man

draws all sorts of unsavoury characters to

his property, and I am sure they are the

    oneswhobreak into theneighbouringprop-

erties! Thiswas just one of the accusations

the resident flung at his neighbour.

No person keeps 12 to 14 cars at once.

Law Enforcement needs to get rid of the

cars and clean up the park, then this man

cannot sell his cars from there, the resi-

    dent said.

Local ward councillor Brendan van der

    Merwe responded to TygerBurgers en-

    quiry.

    We regularly receive complaints relat-

ing to the illegal parking of vehicles in the

    Groenvallei area. There aremany residents

who insist onparking illegally on thepublic

open spaces because of limited access to the

residential units and limited parking avail-

able in the public roads, he said.

Manyhouseholds are shared and as a re-

sult own ormake use of up to, ormore than,

four vehicles per household. These vehicles

    sometimes include heavy vehicles and

small trucks that take up more space, Van

    der Merwe added.

He said this exacerbated the problem of

    parking in the area.

The Citys Law Enforcement does re-

spond to the complaints from thosewho are

against the vehicles being parked illegally,

and are often faced with abuse and fury

from vehicle operators when they do, even

though the vehicle owners are well aware

that they are parked illegally and that vehi-

cles may not be driven onto or along public

    open spaces or City parks.

Van der Merwe said safety was another

    consideration, and added that residents

would rather park their cars illegally to

have them closer to their homes.

Van der Merwe said the complainant in

this case was known to them.

Very often the matter has been exagger-

ated and when the team arrives to inspect

the complaint, there are fewer vehicles

    found than reported.

The responsible person has been ap-

proached by the Citys Law Enforcement

andwaswarned and asked to act within the

    law.

Van der Merwe said he has since regis-

tered a motion with the subcouncil to have

the Citys roads engineers investigate the

problem of parking and access within the

Groenvallei area and said the matter in

    question was being investigated.

Van der Merwe said plans to develop the

area and help solve the parking issue was

    metwith heavy oppositionwhen itwas first

tabled at least five years ago.

To date there has been no change in the

public sentiment and thismakes it very dif-

ficult for theCity to remedy theparkingand

access challenges, he said. We continue

to see future development as a priority to

unlock the potential within the area.

    Vrou van Durbanville is ontsteld

dat jong kinders s vir misdaad

    misbruikwordnadathaarhandsak

by haar voete by n koffiewinkel in die Ty-

koffiewinkel gesit en ek het my handsak by

my voete neergesit. Dit was so 16:20 toe ek

besef my handsak is weg. Toe ons daarna

op die sentrum se videomateriaal kyk, kon

ons duidelik sien n man kom staan ewe

By haar was n klein

handsak nader getrek. Met di dat sy die

sak in die hande gekryhet, het diemanhaar

    tussen sybenedeur indie lugopgetel enhul-

    le het bydie sentrumuitgestap,myhandsak

    oor sy skouer, vertel sy.

Haar iPhone is later by Groentemark-

Dis skokkend dat mense hul kinders so

misbruik. Watter kans het daardie kind om

normaal groot te word, het sy ges.

    Laretha Blom, bemarkingsbestuurder

    van die Tygervallei-winkelsentrum, het ge-

s mense moet waaksaam wees ten opsigte

van hul besittings in enige publieke gebied,

    veral by oop restaurante.

    word.

Maj. Fienie Nimb, woordvoerder van die

Bellville-polisie, het ges mense is gerus en

    ontspanne as hulle winkelsentrums besoek

en gevolglik maklike teikens vir opportu-

niste. Volgens haar is daar gereeld voorval-

Diefstal waarin kinders betrokke was, is

egter nie so algemeen nie. Vroue moet

maar heeltyd bewus wees van hul handsak-

ke endit nie oor stoele se armleuningshang,

of by hul voete neersit nie. Daar was ook al

gevalle waar mense se beursies uit hul

broeksakke op die roltrappe gesteel word.

local security agency last week re-

    ported an interrupted and risky

break-in through the roof of business

premises in the Bellville city centre.

According to Basset Alarms crime trend

report, their call centre received an alarm

activation from the business premises in

Strand Street last Saturday morning and

despatched an armed response officer, who

was then joined by two others. The attend-

ing officer arrived within minutes of the

alarm going off, at 03:21, the report states.

The key holder was alerted when offi-

cers could not access the building for a

proper inspection. The key holder arrived

later and opened for the officers.

The shift commander noticed that a part

of the roof sheeting in the store room was

damaged and lifted. A black bag with sto-

len itemswere also found packed and ready

to go in the front of the shop.

One of the attending officers found anoth-

er bag with all the equipment used to break

the roof open, the report states.

It seems that the suspects managed to

break the roof openandused a rope to lower

themselves down to the shop. They then

packed stolen items into bags to leave with.

The officers must have disturbed them as

they left bags behind with their equip-

    ment.

Bellville police were alerted and their of-

    ficers took over the scene.

Major Fienie Nimb, spokesperson of this

police station, says this is a singular inci-

dent and not necessarily a new break-in

trend, but advised business owners to regu-

    larly check their alarm systems.

    SLICE OF LIFE

    Afrikaans kan

    net oorleef as

    almal baklei

Dit was my oupa wat jare gelede tydens

rasse-ondertone. Sommige sal s dit is nie

rasgedrewe nie, maar uit hierdie hoek

    lyk #whitepeoplemustfall, saamgelees met

    #afrikaansmustfall, vir my na niks

    anders as rassisme nie.

n Geveg wat begin het met #feesmust-

fall het skielik nou verander in n

    rassistiese geplunder wat as #afrikaans-

mustfall vermom word. Al die vuur wat

    kamstig oor Afrikaans gespoeg word,

word in die rigting van wit Afrikaans-

sprekendes geslinger. Nrens sien jy n

    ou met n t-hemp wat s #bruinouens

    moet val nie.

    Word bruinmense

    ontstaan en ontwik-

    keling van Afri-

    kaans so misken

    dat daar nie eens

    teen hulle betoog

    word nie? Of is die

    kamstige nuwe

    revolusionre so

    oningelig oor die

    soetste taal dat

    hulle eienaarskap,

    en by implikasie

    kriminaliteit, net

    aan witmense

    toedig?

    regime?

Of was my oupa reg toe hy s hulle

ongeag velkleur, ewe hard baklei teen

Ek

    het hulle Vrydagmiddag gebel en

hulle het die versekering gegee dit

    word nog dieselfde middag regge-

    maak.

    Diewinkel sal aanspreeklikwees

    vir die koste vandiewaterwatweg-

geloop het, aangesien dit deel van

    die winkel se besproeiingsnetwerk

    uitmaak.

    water so gemors is.

    H

    e was a strong-willed and tenacious

old man and deserves to be remem-

    bered.

This was probably what the young intern

at the Metro Evangelical Services (MES)

had in mind when he contacted TygerBur-

ger to share the death of Oom Dawie

    just Oom Dawie with us.

The death of one more vagrant might not

be that newsworthy to the folk of Bellville

where oom Dawie lived on the streets he

shared with its more affluent citizens in

their shiny big cars, but to some people,

    Oom Dawie was a hero.

    He left a legacy of

    strength and endurance

    behind, and someone

    needed to sayhisnameout

    loud to validate that he

had lived a full life and

    was a well-known mem-

    ber of Bellvilles other

    community its homeless

    folk.

    Arthur Makhuri is the

    MES intern whose mes-

    sage about Oom Dawies

    passing and the subse-

    quent funeral arrange-

    ments came through to

    TygerBurger last week.

    The elderly man was

laid to rest on Friday at

    the Bellville Presbyterian

church, and as they had been inseparable

in life, his two lifelong street companions,

Abby and Emerald, were there to see him

    into the afterlife.

Arthur tells of Oom Dawie, starting with

a scripture message from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8:

There is a time for everything, and a sea-

son for every activity under the heavens: a

time to be born and a time to die.

He says Oom Dawie was from Johannes-

burg and ended up on the streets of Cape

    Town because of family disputes.

He was a strong and tenacious man. He

always held his head up high and was con-

    stantly fighting for himselfwithout backing

out, Arthur says. He spent most of his fi-

nal years on the streets of Bellville and

would constantly come to MES to also use

    the services provided.

He was very close to Abby and Emerald.

They were like a family and the three were

    very much inseparable.

Arthur says Oom Dawies home on the

streets was his most recent sleeping spot

outside the Bellville Police Station from

which he and his kind were evicted, and

    previously near the Bellville Market.

The people closest to him in his last days

besides his two companions, were the rest

    of the MES staffers.

One outreach worker tells: When Oom

Dawie was going through something, he

would keep quiet and sometimes get aggres-

sive, especially if someone stepped on his

toes or was in his space.

The outreach team found Oom Dawie on

    the streets in early 2014.

    Arthur says MES inter-

    venedand tried to get him

    into a suitable home

    where hewould get better

care. But a life on the

    streets also means free-

    dom. Hewould runaway

    from the old age home,

    saying the place was like

    a jail, Arthur recalls.

    The receptionist at

    MES was very close to

    Oom Dawie.

She had a soft spot for

    him, Arthur says, under-

    stood his personality and

    knew his condition. She

    took care of Oom Dawie.

    Shewouldmake him food

and ensure he took his medication. Even

when he sometimes refused and spat it out,

shewould find otherways to ensure he took

    his medication after his meals.

Some of the others remember his sense of

humour and charm: We are going to miss

him, especially when he would say Hello

missy. Ooh but you look lovely. He always

had a sweet smile on his face, says MES

    manager Ilse Els.

Oom Dawies life on the street could have

turned him into steel, yet he always had a

    compliment at the ready forhisMESpeople.

He could have been anyones father or

grandfather had life dealt him a different

    hand with different choices.

May his gracious spirit rest in peace.

Power for the children: Money raised by the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) for

the Carel du Toit Trust was handed over to the trust on Friday. The money was raised at

the fourth Movie in the Park event held by the GTP at Jack Muller Park in Bellville, with

over 700 patrons attending and raising R23 000. The money will be used for batteries for

hearing aids, which total around R25 000 per year. A pair of hearing aid batteries lasts

only a week and costs about R48 for six. They are critical to ensure a hearing impaired

childs apparatus is functional and the child can continue constant listening and speech

development. At the back from left are Kim Simpson, Annelize van Zyl, Valerie van der
