A woman working for a pizzeria in theTygervalley Centre caused a domino-style car pile-up when she reversed in-

to several parked cars.The woman spoke to TygerBurger on the

scene in the parking lot of the centre onMon-day, shortly after the accident happenedaround 11:00.

“I was parked and had to reverse for a per-son to come out of their parking bay. While

I was reversing, I realised the car had nobrakes – it would have to stop on its own,”she said.

In this case, stopping on its own meantcrashing into the three cars within the tra-jectory of the reversing car. These three carsin turnwere pushed backwards and crashedinto the three cars behind them.

“I hurtmy neck, but luckily nothing else,”the woman said.

Sonia Smart is a manager at the pizzeriawhere the woman works. “We’ve beenstanding here for almost two hours and no

police or ambulance,” she said. “I have towait here to see what happens to her.”

The licence disc mounted on the inside ofthe windscreen of the woman’s green Audi,sporting Lesotho number plates, had ex-pired in 2013.

Thiswasa fact pointedoutbyat least threeof the six owners whose cars were involvedin the incident.

Valerie Samuel from Goedemoed in Dur-banville was one of these people.

“I was with my grandson. I had to phonemy daughter to come and pick himup. Luck-

ily we were not in the car!” she said.“The woman said she tried braking and

her brakes failed. But I think she had herfoot on the accelerator instead,” Valeriesaid.

Theresa Cooper from Bellville was of thesame opinion and added she was still inshock.

“At least I won’t have to pay the [insur-ance] excess. I feel so sorry for the woman.She said tome: ‘Thank you, your car stoppedmy car’,” Theresa said.

“I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.”Cheryl Parks and Nadia Esterhuyzen from Dur-

banville are colleagues and were working at thecentre only for a part of the day.

Cheryl said: “These are both our own vehicles.A colleague came into the store [inside the centre]and told me, ‘Cheryl, you need to come and look ifyour car is part of the pile-up outside. A woman justknocked into six cars!’ I still thought no, this won’thappen to me,” she said.

TygerBurger confirmed the woman had a licencedisc expiring in March of 2016 in her possession.She said she “never got around to putting it ontothe windscreen”. The woman also said the car didindeed belong to herself.

Kobus Wentzel is from the towing company thatcame out to help sort out the chaos with the carson Monday. “You know, these accidents aren’t en-tirely unique. It kind of happens rather frequentlyhere at the centre. We had one here about a year

back in which five cars were involved,” he said.“We’ve handled at least one per year, or one every

two years, over a number of years at the centre.We’ll probably have to charge the woman a cash feeto tow her car home. She has no insurance. Shame,”Kobus said.

The centre management confirmed they wouldnot be commenting on the incident.

Besides the pain to the woman’s neck, no-one elsewas hurt in the incident.

‘Deaf or dead’ not only options

Dr Dalene von Delft advocates for a new MDRTB drug that has shown its effectiveness inpatients like herself.


A medical doctor from Stellenberg al-mostwent deaf fromTBmedication af-ter contracting the dreaded multi-

drug resistant (MDR) strain of the disease.Now she is advocating for cheaper, safer

new antibiotics for TB treatment throughTB Proof, the NGO she now works for.“I didn’t lose my hearing completely,” Dr

Dalene von Delft told TygerBurger.“The TB medication that causes hearing

loss is anantibioticweuse to treatMDRTB,”she said.This strain of the bacteria causes the same

disease as “regular” TB, butDalene explainsit is resistant to first-line antibiotics becauseit has become mutated.Dalene contracted MDR TB through her

work in 2010. Because the bacteria is airbor-ne, inhaling it causes the majority (up to

three quarters) of MDR cases in the country.“We are currently using a very old regimen

of medication with a very old combination ofdrugs for treating MDR TB,” she said.This usually consists of six or seven diffe-

rent kinds of antibiotics – including a groupof antibiotics called the aminoglycosides –used to treat different types of bacterial infec-tions.

Drugs are already 60 years old“These antibiotics are widely used; they

are ‘old’ drugs which have been in use sincethe 1950s. It is still frequently used in hospi-tals, but for short periods, usually less thantwo weeks. In MDR TB one has to use it longterm,” she said.The World Health Organisation’s (WHO)

guidelines recommended treatment withaminoglycosides for MDR TB for eightmonths,with total treatment lastingup to twoyears. “Unfortunately one of the side-effects

is hearing loss.”“Because these drugs are already 60 ye-

ars old, their patents have long expired andthey’re very cheap and made by differentmanufacturers,” she said.“Yes, it comes with a warning that it

could cause hearing loss, but it’s not likeyou can sue the drug company, because itisused ‘off-label’. Thismeans thedrugcom-panies do not recommend long term use ofthese drugs for the treatment of MDR TB,but doctors are forced to use these drugs asthere are no alternatives, and it is a deadlydisease,” Dalene said.The WHO recommends regular scree-

ning for hearing loss by means of audio-grams,” she said, explaining this meanthearing at different frequencies and ampli-tudes.“We don’t understand how it causes hea-

ring loss, but it affects the nerve responsi-ble for hearing – the cochlear nerve – andthe outer hair cells which pick up high fre-quency tones, are affected first,” she said.“Low tones still sound okay for patients,

but they start struggling with consonants‘f’, ‘s’, ‘k’, ‘p’, ‘t’. They might not pick uphigh soprano notes.“Sometimes people are unable to pick up

if theirhigh frequencyhearing is deteriora-ting. Some report ‘going deaf’ overnight.”Studies estimate that about one third of

MDR patients lose their hearing, Dalenesaid. And there are no alternatives.“You either become deaf or dead. Inmost

cases you cannot stop the old treatmenteven though youmight lose your hearing.”SowhenDalene learnt thesewere her on-

ly two choices, she tried to access a newdrug being tested in South Africa.“I didn’t want to accept that. If I became

deaf, I wouldn’t be able to listen to musicor conversations anymore; I wouldn’t beable to practice as a doctor anymore,” shesaid.She spoke to peoplewho have had cochle-

ar implants, Dalene said, one of themanur-se who contractedMDRTB and had the im-plant done, but still had troubleusinga stet-hoscope.“I realised thiswas a career ending situa-

tion. Week after week it just got worse. Myhearing deteriorated. Then I heard of a newdrug – the first new TB drug in 40 years,”she said.Janssen pharmaceuticals (part of

Johnson & Johnson) were doing clinicaltrials in Cape Town on a drug called Beda-quiline, offering a slim chance of hope.“Treatment ofMDRTBhasbeenat a dead

end until recently.”She found out about the new drug and

contacted the principal investigator andtried to get the drug available on compassi-onate use. “Sometimes they make newdrugsavailable before the clinical trials arecompleted, seeing as these can take yearsand years. It already took about 25 years todevelop Bedaquiline.

New drug is effective“We are very lucky. So far small studies

suggest that this new drug is effective andthere’s a chance it might replace the old

drug,” she said.“It was a gamble, but I applied to be a part

of their programme. Luckily the drug com-pany and the Medicines Control Council ap-proved my participation. It ended up beingvery successful,” she said.Dalene only lost her high frequency hea-

ring and can still use a stethoscope. “I tookit for six months and there were no majorside effects. So I started advocating for it.There are some concerns that the new drughas an effect on the heart, but it seems to besafe so far.“They’ve opened the clinical access pro-

gramme for the newdrug. The drughas beenaround for about two years.“This year our government decided the re-

sults of the drug look so promising, althoughit still costs about R10 000 to R15 000 per pa-tient per six-month treatment, they aregoing to make it available for certain pa-tients in the public sector,” she said.Another new development – with a South

African technology partner – is the KUDU-wave portable clinical audiometer.“Now clinic sisters can readily test peo-

ple’s hearing, because thismachine is porta-ble,” Dalene said.If a patient qualified to get the new drug,

the cost would be about $900 for a six-monthcourse. “Yes, it’s still a bit expensive, buthow can you put a price on hearing? One co-chlear implant costs about R250,000,” shesaid.The drug company recently donated 30 000

treatments for MDR patients globally. Thedonation programme, led by USAID, willmake the drug available to patients from lowincome countries, Dalene said.According to her the situation is looking

a bit better now in SA. “Now we have porta-ble audiometers and have started screeningpatients. If hearing loss is picked up, theycan apply to qualify for the new drug. Thereis hope on the horizon.”

Gedagte posgevatMaritz het in sy brief genoem dat die

gedagtebyhomposgevathet om“klimra-me, swaaie, ’n sandput, buitebandewaarin gespeel kan word, en so meer” indié spasie te laat aanbring.

“Die area bly dan steeds onder ons di-rekte toesig, met ’n toesighouer, en ditsal dus voorkom dat vandalisme, diestort van rommel of die verkeerde ge-bruik van hierdie terrein sal plaasvind,”was Maritz dit eens.

“Ons glo dat dit ’n verbetering en op-gradering sal wees vir hierdie area watons ons ‘huis’ noem.”

In daardie stadium het die kerkleiertoe reeds sakemense genader om hulp teverleen met sand, pale, swaaie, sement-ringe, en meer.

Maritz het aan TygerBurger verduide-lik dat iemand hom toe gekontak het om

“Die kerk het ’n huurooreenkoms metdie Stad se eiendomsbestuursdeparte-ment om die aangeduide terrein vir par-keer-doeleindes uitsluitlik te gebruik.“Die Stad het bewus geraak van die kerkse voorneme om speeltoerusting hier teinstalleer deurmiddel van ’n nuusbrief,”het Neilson gesê.

Neilson sê die departement het Maritzgekontak om aan te dui dat enige sulkeplanne sou dui op ’n verbreking van sykontrakvoorwaardes.

Neilson sê die kerk is welkom om diédepartement te kontak vir raad oor dienodige prosesse en stappe ten einde ’nspeelpark te kan oprig.

Intercarepraatjie gehou oor koolhidrate

Anew traffic calming policy, aimed ataddressing a backlog of 500 projectsand protecting vulnerable pedestri-

ans such as children on their way toschool, is being considered by the City ofCape Town.

According to a statement, residents arerequested to air their views during thepublic participation process that is cur-rently underway.

City mayco member for transport, BrettHerron explains each year they receivemore than 400 requests for the implemen-tation of traffic calming measures.

There is currently a backlog of 500 traf-fic calming projects to the value of R30 mil-lion.

Need to revisit current regimeCounting among these are requests for

speed humps, raised pedestrian crossingsand intersections, mini-traffic circles,road markings and road narrowing as de-vices to force drivers to slow down on resi-dential roads.

“Over the past years, we have seen anincrease in the number of requests fortraffic calming measures, which can be at-tributed to the deterioration in driver dis-cipline and a general disregard for therules of the road by all types of road user.

“Given the current backlog and thesteady increase in requests, it has becomenecessary to revisit the current regime.As such, a new policy which seeks to prior-itise the implementation of these meas-ures where pedestrians, and particularly

children, are most vulnerable at schools,parks and libraries is now on the table andready for public comment.”

He explains the purpose of the new poli-cy is to provide for a system that is finan-cially sustainable in the long-run; respon-sive to critical safety problems on residen-tial roads; and that will assist ineliminating the backlog within a reasona-ble time.

Call for calming measures near schoolsPart of the new policy proposes that the

transport department implement trafficcalming measures on roads adjacent to ex-isting schools as a matter of priority withthe benchmark of at least 50 schools peryear.

It also proposes that ward councillorsmay identify, motivate and fund trafficcalming measures in response to a provenhistory of accidents on a road or in re-sponse to a recent and very urgent inci-dent that demands immediate interven-tion.

In addition the policy makes provisionfor individuals or organisations may alsofund traffic calming measures, subject tothe prescribed conditions

The draft policy also lists various direct-ives about where and how traffic calmingmeasures will and can be implemented.

Colleen Carstens beweer dié vragmotorhet haar wit Toyota Yaris-sedan op die hoekvan La Belle-weg en Strandweg naby Labi-ance, tussen ongeveer 16:30 en 17:00, ge-stamp.

Die vragmotor het toe uit die verkeers-kruising op die R300-snelweg daarnaas uit-gedraai.

“Ek dink nie die drywer was eens bewusdaarvan dat hy my gestamp het nie. Dit isso ’n groot trok en my kar is so klein. Hyhet net aangery,” sê sy.

“Ek het by die verkeerslig by Access Parkgestop, uitgeklim en die skade probeer vas-stel, en toe my man gebel. Toe ek sien diewiel is reg om mee te ry, het ek ingeklimen die trok agternagesit,” vertel Colleen.

Sy het die vragmotor ingehaal en die regi-strasienommer gememoriseer. Kort daarnahet sy die saak by die polisie aangemeld.

Braille leadershipbook first for USBA book on leadership was translated in-

to braille and launched at Stellen-bosch University’s Business School

(USB) last week.Dr William Rowland was the guest spea-

ker at the launch of Leadership for All byMarius Ungerer, Hohan Herholdt and Jan-nie le Roux.

Rowland is honorary president of theSouth African National Council for theBlind.

According to Rowland only about 5% ofthe country’s blind population was able toread braille, even though braille is largelyconsidered the main form of literacy for thesight impaired.

“I have read lots of academic books inbraille, but never a business book,” Row-land said.

“This being the age of motivation and self-improvement it is right and applicable thatthis particular book on leadership is mademore accessible.”

He said the challenge with braille is thesurprisingly limited number of blind peoplein South Africa who are able to read it.

Rowland said this was the reason it was

equally important that books are madeavailable in audio version, or “text-to-speech”.

“Braille is our form of literacy,” he said.“This book extends leadership to blind pe-

ople as well, leaving no one behind. This iswhat the launch is all about – it is a celebra-tion of opening doors.”

This is the first ever translation intobraille of a book by a USB academic.

It came as the result of an initiative byUSB Management Coaching student Carin-na Krantz.

Last year Krantz worked with visuallyimpaired business leaders for the practicalpart of her Master’s degree in ManagementCoaching.

This is when she realised the critical needfor management and leadership literatureto be made accessible to the blind communi-ty.

Ungerer, co-author of the book and a USBprofessor in Strategic Management, said:“Through the translation into braille thebook’s reach is expanded into a market ne-ver anticipated when my co-authors and Iinitially started with this journey.”

Ever wondered where the Kuils Riveroriginates, or perhaps where exactly itends up? Often wondered how long,

wide, dirty or clean it is?Well perhaps this is something Cape

Town photographer Dillon Marsh can shedsome light on.Marsh, a professional photographer, re-

cently took a series of photos capturing thedifferent parts of this meandering river –from Durbanville to where it eventuallyflows into the sea in False Bay. The photos,16 in total, form part of the photographer’slandmarks portfolio, entitled “A Matter ofCourse”.“From the source in the affluent suburb

of Durbanville, it passes through the starksuburb of Kuils River, to which it gives itsname. It then continues past the poor farm-ing communities ofBlueDowns, the inform-al settlement of Khayelitsha and finally theperipheral suburb of Macassar where it ex-its into the Atlantic Ocean in False Bay,”Marshdescribes the story of the river onhiswebsite.

Asked what motivated him to undertakethe project, he commented: “I have oftendriven through the town of Kuils River, andthe river itself has always intrigued me. Itis obviously amajor feature of the town, butits banks have been fortified with concreteand people seem to avoid interacting withit.”Two years ago he decided he wanted to

find out more about the river.“So I followed it from its source to its

mouth. The fact that it passed through somany different settlements made for an in-teresting progression, and because it’sheavily polluted, the river also seemed tohave the character of an outcast,” explainedMarsh, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree inFine Art from the University of Stellen-bosch.The photo series was completed towards

the beginning of 2013. “Iworked on it on andoff, over a three-month duration.”He did so by driving around the area near

the river, finding places where the roadcame close enough to the river or crossedover the river.“I did walk along the small sections of the

river, but I did not stray too far from mycar,” he added.One of the things, he explained,

that struck him most was the river’ssolitude. “It just seems to pass bywithout people really noticing it orinteracting with it. This may ofcourse be due to the fact that it isquite polluted, but it paints a sad pic-ture,” he said.He added: “All I reallywant to draw

attention to is the river that seems tohave been forgotten. laai en by my vriendin, Irma, gaan aflaaimet die klomp rommel. Hy het gesê hy gaan’n karretjie maak.”

ba-stootkarretjie, die rand van ’n opslaan-swembad en ’n melkkrat.“Ek loop nie alleen met dié karretjie in

die straat af nie; net as my buurvrou saam-stap!” lag sy. “Want hoe lyk dit nou as dieou tannie met die wit kop met ’n karretjieloop?”Marieta sê sy en dié buurvrou het totbed-kopstukke, wat hulle langs die plaasli-ke slaghuis gekry het, ook op dié waentjievervoer. “Dít wat nie kan binne-in nie, kombo-op,” lag sy.’n Buurvrou, ene Lomé, sê Marieta is vir

haar ’n rolmodel.“Haar (Marieta se) gestremde broer help

haar ook wanneer hy by haar kuier. Dit isso ’n mooi voorbeeld wat sy vir almal stelen sy loop en doen dit met ’n glimlag op diegesig.”

How can SASSA assist social grant beneficiaries with illegal deductions?

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), would like to provide communities with the

following information regarding social grant deductions:

The SASSA branded payment card, was introduced to allow social grant beneficiaries the convenience of

accessing their social grant anywhere and at any time. The SASSA payment card is a debit card and

allows for cash to be withdrawn from ATM's, purchases to be made from suppliers and legal deductions to

be made. The introduction of the SASSA payment card into the banking system unfortunately also

provided an opportunity for social grant beneficiaries to be exploited through unauthorized deductions.

Before the social grant is paid into the bank account of a beneficiary only deduction is allowed to be

made for a funeral policy, which may not exceed 10% of the total value of the social grant. This premium is

deducted by SASSA before the social grant is paid to the beneficiary and then paid over to the relevant

insurance company.

Once the social grant is paid into the bank account that is linked to the SASSA debit card, legal deductions

instituted by financial entities will take effect for purchases that were made ie: airtime, electricity, micro-

loans, credit instalments, policy premiums etc. Any disputes should be resolved directly between the social

grant beneficiary and the entity that instituted the deduction.

Social grant beneficiaries are requested to report any illegal deductions to the nearest SASSA

office/service point where they will be assisted to complete a claim form so that the matters can be

investigated. Alternatively beneficiaries can contact the SASSA call centre @ where

SASSA staff will record the relevant details and refer the matter for investigation. Where beneficiaries have

not authorized deductions or for their SASSA cards/account details to be used by others, the deducted

amounts will be paid back to them. This is usually done within a period of 3 working days. Should any

social grant beneficiary not receive the required assistance from a SASSA office or staff member this must

be reported to the office manager or the

• Do not to respond to SMS messages offering airtime, electricity and other services. By responding

to these messages, beneficiaries are actually taking on a "subscription" service and the amounts

will be deducted off the bank account through the EFT debit system every month.

• Do not use your SASSA payment card as security for loans and to purchase any financial services

products.

• Do not authorize deductions to be made against your card except for the one funeral policy

The art of skilfully foldingpieces of paper into allsorts of shapes, is slowly

but surely beginning to takeshape in Wesbank.

This practice, thanks to thegenerous help and coaching ofone woman, Kyoko Morgan, isaimed at building the alreadycreative minds of local teenag-ers.

Kyoko, a Japanese nationalwho moved to South Africa 23years ago, has been teachingyoungsters in the crime-riddenarea for over three years how tofold papers as part of her origa-mi class. It is here, as part of aschool holiday programme,where they are taught how tofold paper into books, wallets orswans.

Origami, from ‘ori’ meaningfolding, and ‘kami’ meaning pa-per, is the art of paper foldingwhich is often associated withthe Japanese culture, accordingto the online encyclopaedia,Wikipedia.

Kyoko, founder and directorof Origami for Africa, startedteaching children at the Wes-bank No 1 Primary School aspart of a holiday programme.The programme was soon ex-panded and now offers freeclasses to more teenagers at theMulti-purpose Centre duringschool holidays.

“I used to do origami as achild and as you grow up you donot forget. It is like a game forchildren in Japan.

“Iwas asked to do it at schoolsand also did it with the awaitingtrial youths at Pollsmoor Pris-on,” Kyoko said. Apart fromthis, she also taught childrendisplaced as a result of the re-cent xenophobic attacks.

“From their reactions I then

realised that origami actuallyhelps to empower children, itgives them confidence.

“I never thought of it before,but realised that for some chil-dren here it is interesting, theyfind it magical and it is alsohealing.

“It is a great activity peoplecan do either by themselves orsocially,” Kyoko said.

Her aim now is to bring origa-mi to townships and underpriv-ileged communities such asWesbank.

“It is good for all, it helps youphysically, mentally and intel-lectually,” Kyoko said.

The activity, she explains,though not as action-packed asball games appeal to both boysand girls.

“Their reaction vary.”Her aim is to train children lo-

cally who can in turn teach oth-ers.

Ayanda Mpikwa (14) fromLeiden High School in Delft, areone of those students.

“I have been doing it for aboutfour years now. When I startedI did not really understand ori-gami. When I am down and feelstressed, I take a piece of paperand fold it, it relaxes you,”Ayanda said.

He said over the years origa-mi has taught him to concen-trate and pay close attention tomany other aspects of his life.“It also helps to discipline us,”he added.

Kyoko said: “Some shapeshave six steps, others have 600.There is slow progression, andthat is what I think makes it soexciting.”

tified as a leader and duly attended two pres-tigious leadership programmes inNewYorkCity, in 2011 and 2012.When Kat returned from the USA, he used

left-over pocket money from his trip over-seas to buy soccer boots and shin guards foran underprivileged deaf soccer team, thePhillipi Deaf Stars.This gesture was so well received that the

schoolboy swiftly launched a non-profit or-ganisation designed to assist township chil-dren with a passion for sports to receive therequisite equipment.The NPO, Katleho’s Give2Talent, also

knownasKG2T, has as its primary objectivethe donation of sports equipment to teamsand individuals from previously disadvan-taged areas. Others that have received fromKG2T thus far include u-15 soccer squadsfrom Klipheuwel FC, Naledi Stars FC andLiverpool-Portland FC.Kat has now progressed into the sport of

cricket, where in conjunction with DistrictNorth Cricket and the Peninsula CricketAcademy in Bellville, he has embarked ona drive to collect second-hand, unwanted orunused cricket equipment for re-distribu-tion to under-privileged schools.ThisGive2Talent cricket initiative, which

started about three weeks ago, is currentlydrivenbyDistrictNorthCricket,with sever-al second-hand kits having already beenfreelydonatedbyDistrictNorthyouth crick-eters. Besides the participation of severalnorthern suburbs schools in the drive, theEl Shaddai Christian School, Kat’s formerschool has also made a donation to the drivein the form of second-hand kits.
