PREFACE
Recommended Readings in Literature, Kindergarten Through Grade Eight wasfirst published in 1986 as a living list of children's literature. The original listhas served as a catalyst for the development of lists by classroom teachers andcurriculum coordinators and, indeed, in the development of this publication,
Recommended Readings in Literature, Kindergarten Through Grade Eight, Addendum. This Addendum includes over 260 titles and is designed to supplement and extend
those suggested previously. As with Recommended Readings in Literature, this list isintended only as a guide for local-level policymakers, curriculum planners, teachers, andlibrarians; it is not intended to be prescriptive in any way.
Organized by overlapping grade levels, this Addendum recommends many titles thatshould be enjoyed by children, adolescents, parents, and teachers alike. Children inprimary grades should be fascinated by Barton Byron's Machines at Work and shoulddelight in John Warren Stcwig's beautifully illustrated retelling of the Grimm brothers'tale, The Fisherman and His Wife. Patricia Polacco's The Keeping Quilt and EveBunting's How Many Days to America? A Thanksgiving Story should serve upperelementary students as a stimulus for discussing and writing about our nation as a nationof immigrants. Middle grade students will enjoy the richness in Virginia Hamilton'sM.C. Higgins the Great and be captivated by O. Henry's tales in The Gift of the Magiand Other Stories. These are but a few of the many fine works on this list.
To assist students, parents, teachers, and librarians in the selection of titles, literarycontributions of specific ethnic or cultural groups are identified by one of the followingsymbols:
BBlack JJapaneseCChinese K- -KoreanHHispanic V-- VietnameseIAmerican Indian
In addition, titles that also appear in Recommended Literature, Grades Ni 'e ThroughTwelve, and that may be particularly challenging to young readers, are identified by anaster*.
This Addendum should ser% e as a useful supplement to the original list of materials forstudents in kindergarten through grade eight. If successful, it too will serve as a catalystfor the development of yet other lists of books in homes, Jassrooms, and libraries.
