    DURATION: 4 weeks

    arch502 | summer 2009

This was a team project done on mystudy abroad at the University of Malaya. The site is located in anagrarian town near the northernborder between Thailand and Laos. With a growing population, the townneeded additional facilities to houseapproximately 800 - 1000 morestudents for the local primary andsecondary school. With scarcefunding and lack of electricity andrunning water, the goal of this

project was to structure the existingconditions to maximize the use of local resources and minimize overallcost.

The intention of our design was torestore a sense of vegetationdestroyed through previousdevelopment on the land. To makeuse of the abundance of localtimber, we extended the schoolutilizing a primary green roof structure to cover the mainclassroom and library space, andtwo secondary green roof structuresto cover additional program spaceneeded for the future phases of expansion. Embedded in the newroofs is a rainwater collectionsystem.

    USC + AFH PREFABRICATED CORE

    PROGRAM: Off-grid utility unit

    LOCATION: Navajo Nation

    DURATION: 16 weeks

    arch402 | spring 2009

Living in the Navajo Nation, often inisolated groups of only a fewdwellings, comes with certaincomplications that this projectseeks to alleviate. The significantlack of infrastructure in such lowdensity situations places thedemand of most utilities on theindividual household. Thus, thedesign of the prefabricated corecontains all of the utility systems fora small home (plumbing, electricity, heating etc.). To be packaged withina standard air freight container, the

core can be deployed anywhere inthe world and tailored toapplications from rural housing todisaster relief.

    SEPULVEDA BOULEVARD

    PROGRAM: Community WallInstallation

    LOCATION: Weschester Area

    DURATION: 8 weeks

    arch402 | fall 2009

Contrary from paper or cardboardarchitecture, materiality seeks totransform material exploration intoa premise for the making of architecture. As part of atwo-segment studio, this projectfocuses on the formal and functionalimplications of the material of choice - cheesecloth. Whenexpanded, the inherent grid of thefabric, made up of woven cottonstrands, results in a puckeringdeformation, changing the densities

residing within the system. Inattempts to revitalize a one-half mile stretch along SepulvedaBoulevard, a formal series of wallsare added to the site. Theyprogressively expand at the centerof the stretch to provide room forcommunity programs whilemaintaining a physical and auralbuffer between existing residentsand vehicular traffic.

The installation is designed to mimica 1:1 scale fabrication of cheesecloth tubes. As a single

member, a tube transitions fromreinforced areas, where the grid isstrengthened with spray acrylic, toweakened areas, where the grid isstretched to deformity.

    ARCHITECTS SKETCHBOOK

    PROGRAM: Hand sketches

    LOCATION: University of SouthernCalifornia

    DURATION: 16 weeks

    arch220x | spring 2006

The architects sketchbook is aportable laboratory for perceivingand documenting space. These aresketches done prior to our firstdesign studio during a series of on-campus sessions. The goal of thiscourse was to develop drawing, observation, and visualization skills.

Even if they are not beautiful,hand-produced drawings generatedthrough the repetition of this

process have the potential to be farmore profound than CAD drawings.
