Aaron Copland: Down a Country Lane. New York: Boosey & Hawkes, 1962. [3 p., 60¢]

Commissioned by Life magazine, Down a Country Lane is everything the title describes. The melody has a relaxed, languid, nostalgic, folksy quality. It is a welcome addition for young pianists by an important contemporary composer. While the piece looks easier than it is, there is no reason to delay its introduc- tion to the repertoire-at least to the listening repertoire. Down a Country Lane will attract the teenage beginner and the young intermediate pianist. Bravo, Mr. Copland for writing for the less experienced pianist. Very highly recommended.

Scott Watson: Alborada. A morning song. New York: R. D. Row Music Co.; distributors: C. Fischer, 1963. [3 p., 40¢]

Alborado is a happy, rather sophisti- cated song-like piece. Children in their second year and adult beginners will be delighted with its characteristic rhythm and melody. The piece offers off-the- beaten-track musical and pianistic ex- periences. Very Good.

Samuel Barber: Under the Willow Tree. From the opera Vanessa. Ar- ranged by Henri Noel. New York: G. Schirmer, 1962. [3 p., 40¢]

It is a pity that publishers do not include the words of arias when they are arranged for children. One of the great pleasures in piano playing is to

It is a pity that publishers do not include the words of arias when they are arranged for children. One of the great pleasures in piano playing is to

sing along. "Under the Willow Tree," an aria from Samuel Barber's opera Vanessa arranged for children, is an important item to add to the repertoire. A beautiful, lilting, appealing song in A major and a minor, it captures the feeling of the action and words in that particular part of the opera. Although the music can stand alone, apart from the complete score, as all good arias do, it could evoke more interest if the words were printed, as well as a few sentences describing the plot. It is assumed from the character of the piece that it is to be played in slow-waltz tempo. There are no instructions to the contrary. Very Highly Recommended.

Rhene Jaque: Two Two-Part Inven- tions. Deux inventions a deux voix. Toronto: BMI Canada; U. S. A.: Associated Music Publishers, New York, 1963. [5 p., 30¢]

Rhene Jaque's Inventions are interest- ing. I can't say that many young players would understand the idiom; but, for those teachers whose pupils have been introduced to the various devices of modern composers, this set of two will give them a lot to study. They are not easy because of the unconventional treat- ment of dissonant counterpoint, and the traditional finger and hand groupings are unfamiliar. Nevertheless, for teachers with knowledge of modern music and imagination in its presentation, this set has value. Recommend-d-for Upper In- termediate and Advanced.
