Dear Foundation Members:

The past 12 months have been a period of great success at Northwestern as the institution has experienced enrollment growth, laid the groundwork for expansion of academic programs and began signifi cant work to improve our campus facilities. I am proud of the efforts of our faculty and staff in their desire to serve Northwestern and its students.

Most of the University’s accomplishments can be attributed to the outstanding level of support it receives from alumni and supporters through the Northwestern Foundation. Each year, hundreds of you willingly donate your time and resources to support students during their Northwestern experience. Your support of scholarship endowments, annual giving programs and campaigns to improve our facilities positively impacts the lives of our students. I can tell you from my visits with

students, they truly appreciate your support.

This past year has been one of the most successful fundraising years in Northwestern’s history, including the establishment of several endowed faculty chairs, growth in programs such as the President’s Association and Millennium Club, and pledges of more than $2 million for our Vision for Victory campaign for athletics. I offer my heartfelt thanks to you for supporting our vision to position Northwestern as a leader in Oklahoma’s higher education system.

Private support of Northwestern has never been more important than it is now. State support of higher education continues to dwindle, which means that students and their families are forced to pay more in tuition and that new initiatives and projects needed by the University to remain competitive will be limited by budget constraints. Your support of Northwestern will make the difference in our ability to recruit new students and help them reach their ultimate goal of earning a college degree. I can think of no greater philanthropic endeavor than the education of our next generation.

Please accept our appreciation for your support of Northwestern. With your continued assistance, our future remains bright.

Sincerely,

Janet Cunningham, Ed.D.President

Western artist Harold Holden of Kremlin, who has a gallery in Enid, has been commissioned to create “The Ranger”. Each of the three

campuses will have one of these beautiful works of art placed in prominent and aesthetically pleasing locations. Each life and quarter size monument,

when fi nished, will stand approximately 10 feet high and be placed on a four foot base. In honor of Northwestern’s 110 years of service, 110 bronze maquettes, which measure 12 inches tall, will be cast and sold as numbered limited editions. The

Foundation and Alumni Association will use the proceeds for the benefi t of the university. Cost for each of the maquettes will be $2,500 and approximately $1,500 will be tax deductible. $1,000 will

be due at the order date with the remainder due at delivery. 2

Dear Friends of Northwestern and especially Friends of theNorthwestern Foundation:

As I sit down to pen this, my fi nal letter to you as Chairman of our Foundation, my feelings are bittersweet. Thanks to all of you, as well as our fi ne and dedicated staff, these last twelve months have seen a very substantial increase to our Foundation’s assets. We now have twenty endowed chairs and two lectureships, more than any other regional Uni-versity.

It has been ten years since I was asked to join the Board of the Foundation, and then asked to serve on your Executive Committee. I’m incredibly proud of those years and hope that I’ve helped to some ex-tent in the increase in endowed Chairs as well as overall growth of the Foundation.

We have helped in fundraising for the “Ranger” statues that now grace the campus here in Alva as well as the Enid campus and soon the new Woodward campus. A special thanks to Tom and Brenda McDaniel and Harold and Sue Ann Hamm for their generous contributions that made those symbols of Northwestern a reality.

The construction happening on the Alva campus as well as the new Woodward campus helps all of us and our students to start the university’s 111th year in fi ne fashion. Our students’ academic experi-ence will be enhanced with the use of newly constructed or modernized physical plant as well as schol-arship help we at the Foundation continue to provide.

Our investment policies have been continually monitored and the investment mix of 65% equities and 35% other fi xed interest bearing instruments has been attained. We, the members of your Northwest-ern Foundation Executive Committee and Investment Committee, continue to work hard to make sure our goals are met and most of all that our constituents, our students, are assisted in every way possible to make their university experience a meaningful and long-lasting experience. The goals we have set for your Foundation are lofty ones but I have all the confi dence in the world that those goals will not only be met but that we, together, will exceed them.

It has been my pleasure and privilege to serve on the Foundation Board, The Executive Committee and now for the past two years as your chairman. Thank you for the honor.

Sincerely,

John K. MartinChairman

As I look back over this last year, I am extremely grateful for the number of generous and talented people that have made another year a huge success. I would just like to mention a few of those highlights.

In fund raising, we just fi nished the second best year in the history of the Foundation. The best year was 1998 when the city of Enid donated $2.5 million to establish eight endowed chairs on the new campus. Ironically, this year was extremely successful once again in a large part because of the endowed chair program.

The endowed chair program is a state matching program that allows state universities to raise funds that are matched by the state legislature on a one for one basis. It translates into a huge boost for our faculty development. At the beginning of this fi scal year, we held the funds for 17 endowed accounts in this

state matching program. By the end of the year, we had increased this to 23 accounts. With this accomplishment, we became the regional university in Oklahoma with the greatest number of endowed chairs. We had 4 generous donors give over $1.5 million to this program just this year. Once matched by the state, the University will have an additional $3 million added to the endowment. This growth in endowment funds will both strengthen existing programs as well as create a couple of new programs that the University had previously been unable to offer.

Our scholarship program continues to grow at a healthy pace as well. As most of you know, this program is the spearhead of the Foundation’s efforts to facilitate our students’ success. This last year, Northwestern was selected by the US News and World Report as one of the top ten schools in the nation for lowest debt load for our graduates. We want to continue this mark of excellence and our donors are making this possible. We had an increase of 28% in our Millennium Club members once again this year, and we again are extremely grateful for everyone’s generosity which translates into scholarship growth.

Finally, one of the most visible cues of our progress has been the physical changes in our campus. We now have two wonderful statues on our Alva and Enid campuses as well as two new signs at the north entrance and northwest corner of the Alva campus. These were possible because of several extremely generous donors who believe, as I do, that Northwestern is an excellent investment.

Thank you again for your support and gifts. As we look forward, we see many more opportunities for positive change with your help. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your CEO during a very exciting time for our Foundation and University.

In November of last year, Northwestern Oklahoma State University’s most treasured symbol found a home on Northwestern’s campus. The bucking horse and rider sits on the lawn of the Jesse Dunn building and has become the focal point of the Alva campus and the community. Alumnus and former president Tom McDaniel, and his wife Brenda, generously donated the funds for the creation of the bronze statue of the horse and rider. Ken Fergeson, president and owner of the NBC Bank, un-derwrote the horse and rider statue. The statue stands approximately 10 feet high and sits on a four foot base that recognizes the contributions of the McDaniels. The horse and rider statue, sculpted by noted western artist Har-old Holden, was fi ttingly named The Ranger. Dr. Janet Cun-ningham, univer-sity president, Tom and Brenda McDaniel, Har-old Holden and others spoke at the dedication of The Ranger. More than 300 people gathered on the front lawn of Jes-se Dunn to wit-ness the historic unveiling. A red and black drape covered the statue and red and black balloons were released as students and honored guests revealed the statue to the public. “We are so pleased that Tom and Brenda McDaniel stepped forward and supported The Ranger project,” Cunningham said. “They understand what Northwest-ern means to Alva and all of northwest Oklahoma and once again have graciously given back to the Univer-sity.” Tom earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Northwestern in 1960 and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1963, af-

ter which he was in private law practice in Alva until 1981. In 1981, the Supreme Court of Oklahoma appoint-ed him as administrative director of state courts. He joined Kerr-McGee in 1984, ultimately becoming vice chairman of the company and a member of its board of directors. From 2000-2001, Tom served Northwestern as presi-dent. He is one of two alumni to serve the university as president; the other is serving in her third year as president of Northwestern. Since 2001, Tom has been the president at Oklahoma City University.

Tom and Brenda were married in 1959. Brenda attended Northwestern from 1957 to 1960 before completing her degree at the University of Oklaho-ma. She also served as the alumni director at North-western during the 1970s, earning her Master of Ed-ucation degree from the University in 1976. They have three grown sons, Lance, Randy and Mark and three grandchildren. Lizabeth Richey is the current Alumni Director at Northwestern and was very excited to have The Ranger on campus. She holds the McDaniels and their generosity in high regard.“The Ranger statue em-

bodies what it means to be a Ranger – the grit and determination that defi ned Northwestern in 1897 and continues today,” Richey said. “Tom and Brenda Mc-Daniel’s gift epitomizes Ranger spirit and the success of generations of Northwestern’s students.” Through their endless commitment and dedication to Northwestern, the McDaniel’s gift has created an en-during symbol of Ranger pride that shows what being a Ranger is all about. Tom and Brenda have been loyal supporters of Northwestern through the years and con-tinue to fi nancially support the Northwestern Founda-tion and its programs.

Hamm family donatesgift to Enid campus

“They have helped us create a piece of art on our campus that is both an icon to our alums and an inspiration to our students,” Bird said. Hamm is chairman of the board and chief executive offi cer of Continental Resources, Inc., one of the largest privately owned oil and gas exploration and production companies in the country. He simultaneously serves as chairman of the Hiland Partners, GP (HPGP) and Hiland Partners, MLP (HLND), publicly-owned mid-size natural gas processing and gathering companies. He also serves as chairman of the board of the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association (OIPA), the nation’s largest and most infl uential statewide oil and gas associa-tion. Within that organization, he has been president of the Wildcatters Club of Oklahoma since 1989. Hamm also is a leading advocate of higher education in

northwest Oklahoma. He played a pivotal role in bringing Northwest-ern to Enid, providing increased access to pub-lic higher education to students in the area. In 1996, he received the fi rst honorary master’s degree ever bestowed at Northwestern and con-tinues to award schol-arships to deserving graduates of Ringwood High School who attend Northern Oklahoma Col-lege and Northwestern. Northwestern’s business program has recognized Hamm by naming an endowed chair in his honor.

Hamm is a member of the Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce board of directors and was named by the Cham-ber as Business Person of the Year in 1992 and 2005. In the community, he was the campaign chair of the $2.5 million project to renovate the Enid YMCA and served on that board for many years. For 20 years, he has funded scholarships through the Marcia Guthrie Scholarship Fund administered by the AME Church in Oklahoma City. Everyone watched as the hand became the reason they gathered. The 10 foot tall, bronze horse and rider statue had become…The Ranger.

8

A bronze hand stuck out of the top of the red and black drape that covered the symbol of Northwestern. Everyone listened as Dr. Cheryl Evans, dean of the Northwestern-Enid campus, and Dr. Janet Cunningham, university pres-ident, talked about the importance of the horse and rider to Northwestern. And everyone listened as Bert Mackie talked about his good friends Harold and Sue Ann Hamm. Still, everyone listened as a shy Harold Holden told them about the true character of a western ranger. Then everyone watched as the red and black drape revealed The Ranger.

The Ranger sits on a plot of grass east of the Northwest-ern-Enid campus at 2929 E. Randolph, south of the univer-sity sign. When she took over as president in 2006, Dr. Cun-ningham was focused on building university pride among Northwestern employees, students, alumni and friends. University leaders dis-cussed creating a promi-nent visual symbol of Northwestern, the horse and rider. This highly identifi able image would be a permanent fi xture promoting a common identity on all three cam-puses. It would also cre-ate an environment with a collegiate atmosphere that instills pride in the institution, the cam-pus, and the three com-munities Northwestern serves. During these discus-sions, The Ranger proj-ect was born and the fi rst statue was placed on the Alva campus by Tom and Brenda McDaniel. Harold and Sue Ann Hamm gener-ously donated the funds for the Enid statue and Ken Fer-geson, president and owner of the NBC Bank, underwrote The Ranger project. Dr. Evans was thrilled to fi nally get The Ranger on cam-pus and had gracious words for Harold and Sue Ann. “The Hamms are so supportive of higher education and we are very appreciative of their generous gift of the incred-ible horse and rider statue,” Evans said. “The Enid commu-nity can now identify Northwestern with The Ranger.” Northwestern Foundation Chief Executive Offi cer, Allen “Skeeter” Bird, was honored by the gift from the Hamms.

Jordan Gaskill just started her junior year of college at Northwestern but those fi rst two years of college were ones not to be forgotten. This small-town Waynoka girl has made quite an impact on the university and the sur-rounding community. Jordan came to Northwestern as a third-generation Ranger. Eight of her family members hold degrees from Northwestern starting with her grandparents, Tom and Opal Treece, and ending with her sister Autumn. Jordan and her older brother Robbie are looking to make that list longer over the next couple of years. At an early age, Jordan decided she wanted to do whatever she could to serve those around her. She got involved and made it her civic duty to help oth-ers. She has served through her church, Future Farm-ers of America (FFA), 4-H and many other community organizations. During high school, amongst her busy school schedule, basketball and just trying to be a kid, Jordan served at the Waynoka Nurs-ing Center. Every Sunday she would spend the afternoon at the nursing home and visit with the ladies. Jor-dan bonded with many of the ladies and couldn’t wait to see them every Sunday, giving up free time and ac-tivities to visit with them. This atti-tude and willingness to serve carried over into college where she received an academic scholarship to attend Northwestern. Rob and Patti Gaskill are very proud of the decisions their daughter has made at a young age. “We love her very much and it has been a joy to watch her further ex-plore her dreams and the challenges of life at such a wonderful university staffed with individuals who want only the best for her,” Patti said. Jordan currently carries a 3.84 grade point average (GPA) and wears number 22 on the basketball court as a walk-on guard for the Lady Rangers. She is majoring in Biology and hopes to attend medical school after she graduates. This is not, however, her only goal. Jordan’s dream is to one day be Miss America. Jordan competed in her fi rst pageant as a senior in high school and won the title of Miss Waynoka. So, when she got to Northwestern, this shy girl was not unaccustomed to the pageant atmosphere. She slowly built up her confi dence to enter the Miss Northwestern pageant as a freshman, after she was voted by the stu-dent body as the Freshman Queen in her fi rst semester. Jordan was successful in her bid for Miss Northwestern and at a young age would be heading to Tulsa for the Miss Oklahoma Pageant in the summer following her

freshman year. She decided to use her passion of service as her plat-form for Miss Oklahoma. Jordan didn’t win the pageant but came away with a better understanding of herself and how she truly could make a difference. It was after that experience that she decided to pursue her goal and dream of being Miss America. “After the Miss Oklahoma Pageant I decided that this was something I could do but I didn’t want it for recog-nition. I saw it as a way to serve others and really make an impact,” Gaskill said. And make an impact she did. She started helping out young students as a reading mentor for the Alva Public Schools. She spoke to classrooms about her service ex-periences and participated in a volunteer service learn-ing project for Hurricane Katrina victims. “I know I have a profound impact on those students’ lives and my goal is to leave each of them a more con-

fi dent person with a clear view of their future,” Gaskill said. Jordan continues to compete and won the title of Miss Northwest Passage in 2008. She was headed back to the Miss Oklahoma Pag-eant and though she didn’t win she didn’t walk away empty handed. Jordan was presented with the Miss State Scholar Award from the Miss America Organization. This schol-arship is given at the state pageants to one woman from each state for academic excellence. Misti Knopf, Miss Northwestern Director from 2003-2008, helped Jordan realize her potential. “Jordan is one of the most dedi-cated Miss Northwestern’s I have

had the pleasure of working with,” Knopf said. “I watched her go from a shy, small-town girl to a confi dent woman capable of accomplishing anything she sets her mind to.” Jordan is still trying to attain her goal of becoming Miss America and also trying to get into medical school. She is set to compete in the 2008 Miss Oklahoma State Fair Pageant in hopes of returning to the Miss Okla-homa Pageant. Skeeter Bird, Northwestern Foundation Chief Execu-tive Offi cer, is proud to have students like Jordan on campus. “Jordan is a great representative of the type of stu-dents we have attending Northwestern,” Bird said. “Knowing that we have so many students with stories like hers makes it easy for me to ask po-tential donors to invest in our students and university.” 10

The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Foundation has designed another billboard to publicize its outstanding alums. The billboard went up about a week ago on the east side of Interstate-35 and High-way 51 and can be read traveling northbound. Janet Valencia, Northwestern Printing Services Coordinator, designed the billboard.

The billboard will stay up for one year and after six months the alumnus being honored will change. Dr. Brock Schnebel, a 1977 graduate and current orthope-dic surgeon at the McBride Clinic in Oklahoma City, is the featured alum on the billboard. Schnebel is pictured holding a Northwestern football helmet with an x-ray behind him and a quote that reads, “The Northwest-ern family positioned me for success.” Patrick Cray-ton, who was featured on the fi rst billboard as a Dallas Cowboy, is the sponsor of the billboard.

The Schnebel families are loyal supporters of Northwestern athletics and the University. Brock’s mother, Elaine Schnebel, recently donated $25,000 to the Vision for Victory campaign for athletics in mem-

ory of her husband William ‘Bill’ Schnebel. Bill was the head football coach for the Rangers from 1965 to 1967. Northwestern will recognize the Schnebel’s gift by naming the athletic training room in its new football locker room in his honor. Brock was the driving force behind the gift.

Brock and his wife Kelli, also a graduate of North-western, have also decided to endow a scholarship in honor of her parents, Richard and Thamazin Harrison. For years, the Harrisons have run the Act One Theatre producing numerous shows for the city of Alva. Brock and Kelli wanted to recognize them for all that they do for the community and their undying support of North-western.

“The Schnebel family has an extremely strong his-tory with Northwestern and you can tell they love this university and the experiences they had on campus,” said Skeeter Bird, Foundation chief executive offi cer. “We are grateful that they have chosen to honor this University with their generous gifts.”

The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Foun-dation has changed the billboard to feature another outstanding alum, Dr. Jim Clafl in. The billboard is on the west side of Interstate-35 about two miles south of the Kansas-Oklahoma border and can be read travel-ing southbound. Janet Valencia, Northwestern printing services coor-dinator, designed the billboard.

For the fi rst six months the billboard was standing, it featured 2004 graduate Patrick Crayton. The current billboard will feature Dr. Jim Clafl in, a 1967 graduate and a 1997 Outstanding Graduate; he currently works at the Oklahoma Allergy and Asthma Clinic in Oklahoma City. Clafl in is pictured in his lab coat with a tray of medicine with a quote that reads, “Northwest-ern, home away from home WITH an excellent educa-tion.”

Dr. Jim Clafl in and his wife Marcee have generously donated the funds necessary to keep this billboard up and going. In August, the billboard will have been up for one year and recently the Clafl in’s decided to keep funding the billboard project for another year.

“We have so many alums that are doing incredible things and we felt this was a great way to not only promote the university but also acknowledge the accomplishments of past, present, and future Rangers,” said Skeeter Bird, Foundation exec-utive director.

Our Promiseto Students

for the 21st Century

Over the past 110 years, Northwestern has taken great strides in building one of the top universities in Oklahoma and the nation. There is still great potential in northwest Oklahoma, and we must make it a realization.

Every year is a new beginning.

CLIMBING HIGHER In a recent publication of U.S. News and World Re-port, Northwestern was the top-ranked baccalaureate college in the western United States in terms of least debt load of graduating students. This put Northwestern in the top 30 of all baccalaureate colleges in the west.

Total enrollment is up more than two percent this year compared to 2006. This year’s incoming freshman class is the highest it has been since 2000. This is a forty per-cent increase from the previous year’s freshman class. With your assistance we will continue on this positive climb.

Your support has elevated Northwestern to this status. Your continued support will propel Northwestern to the next level.

STUDENTS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE Retaining quality students is a major priority. Last year, thirty-nine percent of Northwestern’s students were awarded scholarships. A short-range goal for the Millennium Club is to see that more than fi fty percent of Northwestern’s students receive some form of schol-arship. Keeping the students on campus is crucial to Northwestern’s positive impact on the future. As our enrollment continues to grow, it will require additional scholarship dollars to maintain a larger student body. We need everyone’s help to make this goal a real-ity.

GIFT SIZE DOESN’T MATTER Every gift makes a difference. The value is not in the monetary worth of the gift but the potential that can be unleashed from your gift.

THE MILLENNIUM CLUB In order to ensure that future generations have the opportunity to share in the Northwestern experience, the

Always a new beginning.
