Diagnostic Characters

Nasals forming a broad suture on the snout; two large prefrontals, distinct from nasals and labials; suture between nasals slightly levv than half as long as that between prefrontals; temporal slightly larger than the ocular; a distinct lateral line; 34 segments in a ring around the body ; 232 rings on the tail and body, 20 of these on the tail ; 4 preanal pores.

Distribution

Known only from the arid valleys of the Chinchipe and Marafion, from Perico on the north to Bellavista on the south; probably more widely distributed thronghout this sandy region of northwestern Peru.

Chin shields, one anterior and two pairs, both pairs forming sutures; the suture between the first pair twice as long as that between the second. Dorsal scales elongate, hesagond, over- lapping, thirty scale rows around the middle of the body, fifty-one from the occiput to the base of the tail. A pair of pectoral shields about twice as long as the other ventral plates; eight preanal shields, the two median scales half as long as the two immediately adjacent, and arranged one in front of the other; the two outer pairs of preanal shields very much narrower than the median scales. Tail more than twice as long a8 the body, covered witli scales similar to tlie dorsals.

Color pale yellowish or reddish brown above, dark chocolate brown on the sides, slightly lighter On the ventral surfaces. TWO namow, dark brown stripes above, extending from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail ; these lines broken up into a series of spots in the body region; a narrow median stripe of the same dark tone extendinc from the frontal shield to a short distance behind thej shoulders.

Measurements

2 mm. ; hind limb, 1 mm. ; tail, 57 mm. Total length, 161 nim. 3 tip of snout to occiput, 7 nim.: forelimb.
